I'm not real sure what just happened this morning but my '95 Areostar stopped moving. While in gear there is a loud noise from trans area and the axles are no longer connected to the transmission. I think the trouble is in the electronic AWD portion. I thought at first the driveshaft fell off it was that loud. Where do I start tearing into it?
View 3 RepliesMy '95 Aerostar 4.0 no longer likes to shift out of first gear. It will if I accelerate to maybe 25mph and completely get off the throttle for a few seconds. (It also revs freely at full-throttle kick down, as though it was in neutral.) A fluid and filter change didn't work, so I dug into forum posts. I found the vacuum modulator, and there's no ATF in the vacuum line, but it's an adjustable one which has me baffled...
The modulator has a thumb wheel on the outside of it. It will unscrew completely - and then it comes off, with a pin attached to it. This is very different from the ones I've seen pictures of here, where the pin is moved by the diaphragm. Is this the same pin, or some kind of preload device for the actual pin farther inside?
There's enough else wrong with the Aerostar that I'm not willing to sink very much more money into it. It'll run as is, as long as I'm careful. I'm just trying to get a few more miles out of it... might a regular, non-adjustable modulator?
Is there an easy way to do this...???
View 2 RepliesI have a grinding/Rattling noise coming out of the front area of the transmission when the clutch is disengaged (up), noise stops when clutch is pushed in. 99 (6/98) F-350 7.3, manual, 4x4, 192xxx mi. Just came out of the shop with the following done to it:
New Power Force clutch kit, twice.
Transmission Rebuilt twice.
Different rebuilt transmission.
Rear main seal r/r.
After first time in shop the noise was apparent. about 3,000 miles were driven with no change, brought back to shop, where transmission was gone through again as well as a new clutch set, same noise still present! Another transmission was rebuilt and installed, same noise!!!
What would cause the front wheel on drivers side to lock up if it isn't the brakes. have been hearing a loud popping noise for a while on drivers side especially when turning left. Today got really loud just driving and then a real loud grinding noise. Then a loud pop and front wheel locked up and skidded across highway til i came to a stop. What it could be or how can i at least get wheel to turn to get it on trailer...

Some weeks ago a noise started that sounded like fan blades striking against heavy plastic fan guard. At first I thought it was coming from the transmission/Transfer case area but after a few weeks of listening to I now believe it's coming from behind the dash area, however, I can't find any reason for it be from there.
The noise usually starts around 45 MPH
I checked the heater fan and it appears to be Okay. I don't know of any other fans in that area.
I have 1995 Toyota Avalon w/173K miles. It’s in good shape mechanically and cosmetically. My 16 yr old daughter is the primary driver. I have extensive service records and have replaced the springs/struts, o2 sensors, and a few other bits. My question is related to hard shifts and a check engine light. During the summer the trans shifts normally. In the fall & winter, when temps dip below 50 degrees, the trans shifts harshly and the check engine light blinks indicating a trans solenoid is defective. The trans fluid has been flushed twice, most recently in Oct 2008 at the Toyota dealership. My theory is the techs filled the trans with a heavier weight fluid than is necessary and that is triggering the codes.
View 1 RepliesMy 1997 4.0 Rear Wheel Drive is making a clicking noise when it is put into gear or when it switches from drive to reverse and vice versa. Sound is coming from the back of van. Does not make noise all the time. Drove 50 miles last night with no problems and minimal clicking. Could it be U-Joints going bad? Or is this a different problem?
View 6 RepliesI have a 1995 4X4 Chevy Silverado. Well tonight the lower radiator hose came off, and all the coolant drained out while my wife was driving it around town. She noticed that the temp gauge spiked, and tried to get home. The truck stalled, was able to restart it for a moment, stalled again and now when we try to start it up there is a low spinning noise coming from the area around the starter. I think it might be the starter trying to engage the flywheel. My question is whether or not this could because the motor has seized, or is there another symptom that could potentially make this noise.
View 1 RepliesThis van has the A4LD transmission. I know nothing about transmissions, so, when it wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd, or, 2nd to third, I researched it on here and found a lot of bad reviews. I also found out that it was likely the modulator gone bad, and how to replace it. I replaced it, and although the new one was restricted and the old one wasn't, shifting was back to normal. So, I was thinking, that was easy enough, pretty good for the original tranny which has 297,623 miles on it, and hasn't been serviced since the first 1k!
Well, that lasted about 75 miles. Now it won't go forward or backward. Everything is still in place, no leaks, fluid level is full. I didn't change the fluid or do anything other than change the modulator. (My friend can't afford to service it properly. Now it may need replacing!) I have only seen problems shifting between gears and OD, TC lockup, etc., but, nothing about not moving at all. What might be the problem? Is the tranny history?
About a month ago my van did the thing where it dumped four quarts of trans oil onto the exhaust creating an awesome smoke screen. I would like to avoid this happening again. I plan on adding a second trans cooler in series with the factory one. If the trans fluid goes through the radiator or trans cooler first?
View 3 RepliesProblem that developed after our 03 xle got whacked by a Harley in the right front wheel. The repair shop changed out the spindle and wheel but we got it back with a loud humming noise over 40 mph. The shop said it was the axle shaft bearing and not related. I argued and the insurance company reluctantly agreed to replace the shaft,bearing, and housing. Got the car back and again, the same humming only less faint and obviously coming from the trans. Everyone is dodging responsibility and it looks like we are left to sort things out on our own. Figures. This car road perfectly prior to the accident. I can't find any online diagrams of the trans to see what the shaft fits into. Supposedly the shop is holding on to the old shaft, I was going to go and look at the end splines, I believe that's what it has.
View 2 RepliesI just picked up Aerostar #6 and am in the process of transferring parts etc. Got this one cheap as it was badly abused and has issues. Big problem, the shifter takes a lot of wiggling etc to get out of park. Is the interlock easy to disable? If so how? Or would a good column from my 93 be an easy plug and play proposition?

View 6 RepliesI just picked up a 2001 F350 with the 5.4L with 200k miles. When I test drove the thing the engine sounded fine. I got it home and noticed that it occasionally has a loud knocking noise that is coming from the Left Valve cover area. It sounds like an old Chevy 6.5L Diesel ...
It comes and goes, Hot or Cold. It seems like it usually goes away when driving with RPMs above 1500 or so, however I took off with it yesterday and the noise would not go away, it seems like it might be low on power when the noise comes on, but then again it always feels low on power, so who knows.
I have changed the plugs, oil, and verified there are no exhaust leaks at the manifolds.

I dont think it is the timing chain, as it seems like its coming more from the center of the cover, when placing my hand on the cover near the timing set there is no vibration or anything that would lead me to believe its the chain.
All of my searching so far turns up 3V stuff, and little info on the 2V engines. The valve cover looks like a nightmare to get off, who have to work on these things (including me).
How to drain the tranny fluid from the torque converter , I am dropping the pan and installing new filter and fluid, I want to get as much of old fluid out as i can It has a 3.0 engine with overdrive...

View 12 RepliesMy mom's 95 shifter is slowly getting worse. Right now it's at the point where we have to hunt for gears just to put it into park or reverse or d/od. It's not stiff like the rest of ours, hers is all sloppy and loose. She says it's been doing this for a while, but i think it got worse when i pulled her cluster out to change the light bulbs. I say this because i couldn't get the needle cable un done, so i just let the cluster rest on it while i was changing the bulbs, which put a little bit of tension on it.
