I have a problem with my 1997 aerostar. There is a squeaking noise that gets more significant when I turn. I am pretty sure this is the drive belt as the power steering fluid is fine. Should I attempt to replace the belt tensioner and if so is it just the pulley that needs replacing or the whole tensioner. I am by no means a mechanic but can figure most things out.
View 5 RepliesAfter finally identifying a bad serpentine belt tensioner for being the the culprit for my engine noises, my mechanic said that the 'thru-bolt' is siezed. Since the replacement job was at my budget limit he said he doesnt want to get into it in fear that he has to brake the bolt and drill it out (requiring 2-3x more labor cost according to him).
If this is the case, and the 'thru-bolt' is seized, is this in any way something I can make a an effort to tackle? I have a jack and jack stands, and plenty of time.
My tensioner pulley is making noise.I replaced the rear idler pulley (can't get to the front one), but still have the noise. Mention a DIY for replacing the tensioner pulley bearing. A part number for the bearing?
View 2 Replies2006 6.0l ... I've read all over for tips on routing this belt and everyone plays it off as being some simple '20-minute' task. I'm on my 4th hour on this now.
I can't figure out how to route the belt around the tensioner pulley, circled in the picture (from another thread). Everyone glosses over how to do this and I can't figure it out.
It seems like the only way to get it on is to bend the belt and slide it between the pulley and the block, but that I just can't reach the blasted thing.
I have a 2012 Camry LE 4 cylinder non-hybrid at 31,000 miles. I was changing the oil yesterday and noticed a repetitive squeaking noise from the front passenger side of the engine. Upon looking closer, the belt tensioner has a constant wobble. Maybe around 1 cm of deflection with the belt. The AC condenser was running. Is this normal? Do I need to replace the tensioner? If so, what the torque spec is for the main tensioner bolt (pivot bolt)?
View 1 RepliesHow to replace the belt tensioner. It's not putting out enough tension when the engine is cold. So, the belt makes chirping noise for couple of minutes idling when cold with AC on.
I had the AC inspected and everything checks out according to my mechanic.
He believes that the issue is with the tensioner since I had recently had replaced the serpentine belt.
I had my timing chain tensioner replaced. When they do this do they touch the serpentine belt tensioner? 1000 miles after the timing replaced, my serpentine belt shredded and they say I need a new serpentine belt tensioner. Does this sound correct?
View 3 RepliesSo my mk6 developed what initially sounded initially like a bad serpentine belt tensioner. Only under anything more than load, and sounded like a bird chattering under the hood. Got outside today, fired car up, watched tensioner and it sat there steady as a rail. The noise is coming from the opposite side of the engine. Not really mechanical/metallic at all and tracks under load with the RPMs. Why i initially thought what i did. Not I'm sort of baffled.

It vibrated as much as the old one did, so I assumed that a bit of vibration is normal and forgot about it. Well, after recently looking at some instructional videos, I am now under the impression that any vibration in the tensioner is bad. Here is what is going on -- [UrL] .... Is it OK or should I get another new tensioner?
View 4 Replies2002 Camry 4 cyl. Can the idler pulley alone be replaced on the serpentine belt tensioner? I noticed a very slight side to side play when I had the belt off. No noise from it. When I looked at rock auto, they sell the whole bracket with the pulley.
View 2 RepliesI have a concern with my serpentine belt chirping when it's wet or cold. I have tried soap, and other attempts to quiet it down. Belt tension is good, new water pump and fan. Otherwise no other issues so far.
View 9 RepliesI was driving the other day (cold weather- approx 15 F), and my serpentine belt shredded. Managed to drive a mile or so to my driveway. The belt was shredded on the fan side (and had come completely off), but it wasn't torn in two. Got a new belt and installed it, but upon test-cranking, found that it was riding up one ridge on the crank. All the other ribbed pulleys were fine (PS, AC). The smooth pulleys had the belt move a little, however.
Thinking I didn't set it right, I reinstalled the belt on the crank and tried again. Same result (belt rides up one groove, towards the fan). I perused the archives, and one comment was that someone simply trimmed one groove off the belt and everything was happy. The belt found it's "groove", and didn't act up anymore. Doesn't fix the underlying problem, but
1) is this a good fix
2) any clue what is going on?
3) Do I need to get the crank fixed?
BTW, I am sure that I threaded the belt on correctly!
1992 Aerostar, 4.0L, AWD. AC+P/S....
So i have a 1998 4.0 ohv ranger and have been fighting belt squeak shortly after i got it. I've replaced the belt twice and the tensioner twice when i put a GATES belt on it stopped for like month. But its still squeaking. If i put a wrench on the tensioner and turn it the squeak stops. So i need to find a way to tighten the tensioner could i somehow jam it, our hook up a turn buckle bolt to manually tighten it, or use a different ford tensioner. I really need to do something cause this squeak is just down right annoying.
View 2 RepliesI noticed my serpentine belt started squeaking about 3 days ago. And yesterday as I was driving to work I heard a clicking sound coming from the left side of the hood, then my car started to gradually shut down and white smoke was coming from the engine. When I got to the stoplight it completely turned off, but I was able to turn it back on again to turn into the parking lot before it shut off again. When I checked it there were no visible leaks, my reservoir for my coolant was still full, and my meter never went up indicating that my car was over heating. I'm not sure what's wrong with it, but after it sits for awhile it is able to turn back on again for a while.

I hear it a lot more when I put the heat on through the top window (defroster). Never noticed it until it started getting cold. You think it might just be the belt? Or what?
So this car has only 50k miles. It was really cold in the sierra (around 20F) and the car started making a squeaking sound. I assumed it was just belt warming up, but when I opened the hood later, I saw shredded plastic. No CEL's! Seems to run smooth.
Where this came from? Is it part of the serpentine belt system?
I just replaced the original serpentine belt at 95k miles (more preventative than anything) and now it's squeaking. Does this mean I have to replace the tensioner?
View 11 RepliesLong story short is, I replaced my 2007 Santa Fe's serpentine belt and it still squeals for some time after we start the vehicle (then stops) ... but more importantly I *think* its still slipping if we're driving during rain or on very wet roads.
Long story long is ... the problem appeared as loss of power steering and air conditioning when driving during rain. Took it to the dealer and they suggested to replace the serpentine belt, replace the shroud (plastic) that covers the belt, and replace the timing belt. As we have 36k miles on it, no one I talked to understood the timing belt suggestion. I see though perhaps its just because the car is 4 years old? The shroud the dealer claimed was cracked and may be letting water in on to the belt. However, they completely removed it and did not replace it so I was not able to inspect this myself (wife took the car in for the appointment).
I bought the new belt and put it on. The squeaking was gone but as soon as I hit rain again, the slipping was back as bad as before (and we'd lose power steering / air conditioning same as before). I had a 1.5 hour drive in rain where the belt was slipping almost nonstop; constant back and forth between catching and slipping.
When the replacement shroud came in I thought that might solve the problem - keeping moisture off the belt. However with that in place I'm afraid there is still some slippage as I've noticed some dashboard lights come on during brief heavy rain. Also the initial squeaking is back when we start the car.
What a Serpentine Belt is? (how much is it for that part alone and to install at the dealership?)
Dealership told me why during the cold mornings after I start the car up, it is creaking and squeaking........

I have a 2003 f150 4.2 v8. and i have a squeaky belt I am almost positive its the belt i went to change it today but being sick,cold (NY), getting dark having just worked 10 hrs and changing oil it was not going well.
The reason I think its the belt it does not squeak when its really cold out but once it warms up a little its back so I am thinking when it gets warm it stretches out a little and when its cold it shrinks up or am I just crazy..
Been trying to isolate my noisy serpentine belt. Had the belt off and spun everything, only thing I found that made any noise was the alternator. It had a nice churp like a bearing was on its way out in it. So I replaced that figuring my squeak was going to go away. No such luck. Listening to it again while it was idling, I crawled underneath. Almost seems like the churping noise is coming from the Crank Pulley. Is there a bearing on this pulley that goes bad?
