I have been getting awful gas mileage lately. I have a 2000 6.8L V10 Excursion, so I wasn't expecting much but it got bad. I know winter weather kills gas mileage but i finally noticed I do not have fifth gear. Fluid is good, clean and not burnt and all other gears hit when they need to, what this could be besides a new tranny.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2000 v10 excursion and once in a while when I shift from park to drive it will stall and lunge forward. It will stay running if I go to neutral but as soon as it goes into drive it will stall and also reverse seems to work sooner than drive will come back I have been stalled and had to put it in reverse and pull to the shoulder.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2000 excursion V10. It will die in gear forward or reverse the overdrive light flashes and cel shows code p0720. I have new plugs and COP on all 10 cylinders. I have replaced the differential speed sensor and the sensor on top of the transmission. I have a basic code reader it shows at the time it dies the vehicle speed is 70 mph while the speedometer shows 0. When I unhook the abs module it still has code p0720 but it does not die. I am replacing the abs module?
View 8 RepliesI have a 2000 Excursion w/ V10 and I have an issue with the transmission form time to time. some times it does not want to shift out of first. if I pull over and turn it off for a few minutes it will be fine for a while and it doesn't do this all the time. A few nights ago it did this so I pulled over and turned it off and it still did it but then it started shifting on its own just fine till we got on the high way which is started shifting in and out of over drive going around 60-65 MPH. didn't want to go too fast not knowing what it could or would do. it did this for a few miles then it started working fine. next day it did the same thing not wanting to shift out of first then started working fine. drove it around last night and it all worked perfectly. The CEL is on but I get a no communication text from the scanner so that is another thing I need to look in to. I'm guessing it is an electrical issue being when it works it shifts fine and it does not slip at all.
View 14 RepliesMy 01 excursion with a v10 6.8 liter gas engine was running rough and cutting out at 40 miles an hour climbing hills and similar situations. Had some engine codes for cylinder misfires. Changed all the spark plugs. Now it does not cut out and runs generally smoother. But something is still very wrong. At idle, you can hear it kind of shuddering.
In first and second gear it does pretty well, but when it goes to 3rd the shudder and vibration in the vehicle becomes noticeable, it can become very bad as you slowly climb to 40 miles or 50 miles an hour. If you give it gas and rev the RPMs up and go on up to 60 or 70 miles an hour, it smooths out and you would not think there was anything wrong with it.
The mechanic said we would have to wait until an engine code comes up, but I would like to understand and fix this problem if we could.
I have a 2000 Excursion 7.3 4x4 with 237k miles on the original 4R100. Yesterday afternoon I went to back out of a parking space and the truck wouldn't move. When I put it in R, the transmission will engage and upon pressing the gas pedal it acts like it wants to move but will not budge. It rolls forward with no issue or noise. It will not roll backwards at all - not in neutral and not in reverse. The transmission shifts fine but with some hesitation to engage each gear. I have noticed some slippage but nothing crazy.
I 1st thought something might be wrong with the rear end but after some research I think it might be the transmission.
My 05 excursion wont go into gear some times. I have to push the brake pedal a few times to get it to go..
View 6 RepliesSo after confirming that my Ex was in 2wd (dash switch) with no 4x4 light on gage cluster it still was in 4H. So I took it to the dealer and they managed to get it stuck in 4 Low and now it won't go into any gear but 4x4 Low. Definitely a transfer case problem but I ended up driving it home at 20 MPH. 119K on truck.

View 1 RepliesSince I have removed my supercharger, I have noticed a slight whining in 1st gear right before it shifts into 2nd. It may have been there the whole time I have had the truck and just never heard it over the SC whine. It sounds like it is coming from the tranny. The fluid is clean and it shifts smooth and I also have a xl Hitec tranny pan and temp stays cool always.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2001 Ford Excursion with the 5.4 and auto trans. I don't know for sure what specific tranny is in it but I do know what I want to do. I really like the pistol grip style shifters that a 2004 ish F-150 has and I wanted to make that conversion in my Excursion. Is it possible? Are the trannys the same to where I can switch out the gear selectors? And also how would I even do it?
View 7 RepliesLately (within the last couple of days) when we park the Excursion we have a difficult time getting it out of park and into gear whether it is going in to Reverse or Drive the gear shift does not want to move.
I have not forced anything at any time but eventually with some pumping of the brake pedal and some putting into park and out of park we can free it up. This is something that happened virtually overnight and once we are in gear everything is normal.
What is causing it? I am making an assumption that it has to be some switch in the steering column but I am no mechanic and only guessing.
I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to look like this.... how the heck am I even supposed to clean this out?!
View 14 RepliesI just installed a rebuild 4R100 transmission in my 2001 4x4 Excursion with the 7.3. I'm having trouble getting it to engage into gear. As I shift it into gear it sounds as if it wants to engage but doesn't. I have checked the fluid level and it at a normal range. I'm wondering if I didn't put enough fluid in the converter would that cause the problem.
View 7 RepliesMy transmission has started acting weird. When it's cold it seems to be not as bad. First thing is when I put it in reverse it hesitates for a few seconds then goes into gear. Second it will drive great then just out of no where start shifting very hard then go back to shifting smooth again. Third when pulling a load it won't always start in 1st gear when you come to a complete stop sometimes it tries to start off in 4th.

View 9 RepliesI just put new plugs in and changed the fuel filter. I also hooked it up to a ecm reader to see if there where any faults and it does not have any. I reset the computer just he same. But for some reason I can't get it going over 30 mph and when i floor it. It just doesn't go anywhere. At first it did read faults in the 6 plug but I didn't have a check engine light on i just replaced the coil and plug but now after I did everything I cant get above 30 and its scary. I just don't know what to do?
It does idle normally. As for the fuel pressure i took the filter off and turned it over and fuel runs through fine from the tank. I checked the wiring and it looks ok. No codes are present. This just started it happened a long time ago but after I changed the fuel filter it worked fine so I changed it again thinking it was the problem again but after i did it the problem still persists. I don't have any check engine light on either....
2003 Excursion 4wd. Noticed a few days ago that when selecting reverse, it seemed to take longer to actually go into gear. Didn't think much of it and it has been fine since. Pulled the camper a few hours away for the weekend..
Now the truck is slow to engage reverse. Even when warm, when I put it in Reverse, it takes up to 30 seconds or so for it to 'catch'. I checked fluid and it's ok. Shifter feels ok. Fwd gears are fine?

The first pic shows the torx screws that come loose, allowing the handle to get sloppy.
The second pic shows the black plastic adjuster wheel that centers the gear shift selector needle on the proper designated gear displayed in the indicator window.
Brought the truck home the other night after having the 4:88's and locker installed. At about 65mph plus I have a severe vibration that sounds like it's coming from the front. It's bad enough I can feel it in the floorboards.
After some research I'm thinking the drive shafts need to be balanced due to the increased speed they are now running at. The u joints are good and I trust the installer did a good job putting the gears in.
Factory gears were 3:73's. 7" of lift on 37's. Any other parts other than the drive shafts?
So ever since I picked up the truck from getting the springs swapped out the tranny has started to slip more and more. It's about at the point now where it does it at the 1-2 and 2-3 gear change every time unless I give it a little throttle so it shifts harder. It's just the normal shifting pause and then the slight jerk when the next gear starts. Time to a new torque converter, or am I looking at getting my whole thing rebuilt? If it's the converter I can give that a shot myself but if I have to have it rebuilt it's going to have to wait until January or February.
