first off this not my truck i am asking about it's my dads, he has a 2002 f150 xlt 4x4 5.4L and he replaces the coil packs all the time is there a way to prevent these from failing so often, and is there an easy way to get to the spark plug on the very back on the passenger side?

View 14 RepliesI had taken my engine into the shop and had to have to engine replaced, I would have done it myself and would have saved a bunch of money, however I did not have the time. So I had the same exact engine placed into my MK3 from an old Passet, the only issue I'm having now is the sounding of a misfire on one of the plugs..
Only thing is, all plugs and wires are brand new, so I'm thinking the Coil pack is on it's way out the door. The mechanic said it was the original coil pack so that would make sense. It's a 1997 2.8L 6cyl engine.. I'm looking into purchasing a new pack, and on a website that I had been using a lot lately, only had MK4 coil packs.. Can I replace an MK3 pack with an MK4? Would i have to change the plugs and wires again?
Need to replace coil pack on cylinder #3. What is the firing order? 2004 - V8, 52,000
View 1 RepliesI have a 2002 prius that threw a spark plug and loosened the coil pack. The mechanic just reinstalled the plug and tightened the coil pack and said it was fine. Why it would throw a spark plug?? It was running fine, no warning lights, i just heard an unusual slight noise and opened the hood to check it out, and notice the loose coil pack over the first spark plug
View 2 RepliesB5 Passat, it has the 2.8 and it has been having moments of shuttering so I did a scan and hit 3 engine falts, I did do a clear and rescan so these are new faults.
3 Faults Found:
17801 - Ignition Coil Power Output 1
P1393 - 35-00 - Electrical Malfunction
17802 - Ignition Coil Power Output 2
P1394 - 35-00 - Electrical Malfunction
17803 - Ignition Coil Power Output 3
P1395 - 35-10 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent
Right now my guess is the coil pack is going out or loose connection to the coil, this coil is roughly 8 months old so it kinda has me at a loss and hoping its not the coil.
I have an 02 f150 2WD with a "leveling" kit. It was on the truck when I bought it. However, the front sets noticeably higher than the rear. The rear has lifting blocks, while the front has the lifted spindles as well as the coil spring spacers. At least I think they are spacers. I had to replace lower control arm bushings a while back, and there were black plastic rings on top of the springs. Can I remove the spacers? If I can, I plan on doing that and replacing the rear blocks with whatever I need to get the stance back. I like the height of the truck now, just hate the front being higher than the rear. I do pull my boat with it.
View 2 RepliesSo before I go buying 10 new coil packs I will test them first.....How many ohms should they read when tested with the meter. I am finding ranges 1.1-1.3. Old or new they are all reading the same. So look my plugs are AWFUL...changing this for sure.

View 4 RepliesI removed all the spark plug wires for testing/cleaning and install new spark plugs, but stupidly forgot to mark the wires where they came off at the Coil Pack. yes, Now I cannot find a diagram for the Driver's Side wire positions at the Coil Pack.
(The Passenger side wires are 1-2-3, starting from the front of the engine, simple enough); The Coil pack itself has numbers stamped on it, so I have the Passenger side done correctly.
But the Driver's Side wires are not in a Sequence of 4-5-6, instead they are 4-6-5 (or something like that), and I can't remember their positions at the Coil Pack. Looking for a drawing showing the Driver's side Wires as they connect to the Coil pack?
Example:
Front Driver's side plug wire connects to which coil pack position? (Front, Center, or Rear?)
Center Driver's side plug wire connects to which coil pack position? (F, C, or R?)
Rear Driver's side plug wire connects to which coil pack position? (F, C, or R?)
I have read the thread on repairing cold solder joint inside the instrument cluster. How to correctly disassemble the dash to get to this ? this drives me crazy when the odometer is not there. 2002, f-150 fx4, 5.4 w/ auto. trans.

View 5 RepliesI was removing the coil packs on my car in preparation for the new ones coming in. The far right coil pack came out very easily and was about half as long as I expected. The other half of the coil pack was at the bottom of the spark plug well. I reported a misfire yesterday. As the mechanic would say "now there's your problem". removing the bottom half of a coil pack?

View 5 RepliesI have an 02 f150 xl, I'm taking the stock head unit out and replacing it with a Pioneer 1900. I didn't buy a connector I'm just splicing the wires together, I know I shouldn't do it that way but it's to late now, what my problem is, there are three ground wires coming from the truck and the new head unit only has one ground, I just looked wiring diagrams up for both head units and that got pretty much everything done, just there are two speaker ground wires that are black and green, and then a regular black ground wire, I'm not sure if I should connect them all together or cap them separately, because I connected everything up and the head unit wouldn't turn on...

Do you have to take off the entire dash to get to it? Will be doing replacement myself as the dealer or shop would probably kill me on labor.
View 12 RepliesI'm driving down the road yesterday, and going through a intersection, get through it i'm in 3rd gear, 20mph, and my car starts to misfire, so i am like crap coil pack, i changed them all with new plugs maybe 1000 miles ago. Well I slow down so i can turn around and head back to my place slowly a mile away. and it never happens again. Now the car had just had the complete exhaust replaced last week, and literally only 9 miles put on the car before this happened. I drove 35 miles to work today, and roughly 50 miles last night after this and it has not happened anymore. Am i doomed for coil pack failure again?

I'm trying to find the cause of a vibration in what I think is the front drivetrain. I was almost positive that it was the front driveshaft universal joints. I jacked the truck up off all fours and took her for a spin. The noise seemed to be coming from the from u-joint.
I took the u-joints off and they were still nicely lubricated (after 230,000 miles). My heart sank since this probably not the root of my problem.
I'm surely going to put new u-joints in but think I'll get them from the dealer tomorrow (if the OEM stuff lasted this long, why buy aftermarket, even though it's the same stuff? I dunno, just my OCD kicking in.)
So, I thought I would take the truck for a drive without the front driveshaft today (in 2wd of course) to see if the vibration was gone. Can I do this?
