Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Hum / Vibrate At 15 Or So MPH Up Front

Nov 1, 2014

On my 1997 F150 4x4, at 15 or so MPH up front it starts to hum & vibrate (not shaking type vibration but tight vibration) and hum gets louder and vibe becomes more predominant as speed increases. 1 person who is pretty credible (but nobody is perfect especially me) told me its not uncommon for bearings in front diff to go bad. He also mentioned to me they can be a pain to change and may be much simpler to get a replacement gear set from a yard. I will be changing brake pads, rotors, calipers and hubs this week.

I didnt feel any overwhelming heat coming from that may occur from bad hub bearings, when I spin wheels do not hear any unhealthy sounds nor is there any play on hubs but I am replacing them also anyway. Is he correct about the possibility of bad bearings in front diff and not uncommon for them to fail? Also, Side note I am also installing torsion bar keys to lift front about 2.5". Should I get extended sway bar links to replace originals or would stock be fine?

Volvo :: 1997 850 Running Very Rough And Vibrate

First time Volvo owner. Love the 97 850 that I got, but it runs really rough, and I don't know if that's normal for these cars or not. When I say it runs rough, I mean that it vibrates like crazy (not shaking, but vibrating) and it's loud. Every other car I've owned sounds smooth when it's idling or accelerating, but not this one. And I don't mind the noise at all, but the vibrations are a little frustrating.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 4x4 Relay Clicks And Light Comes On - Front Driveshaft Spins But Front Wheels Don't

I got a 97 f150 single cab short bed. My 4x4 shifter is on the floor and moves. I put in 4x4 and the relay clicks and the light comes on. Same as 4low. Front driveshaft spins but front wheels don't. Could there be a leak in the auto locking hubs? Also I want to manual convert the auto hubs. It can be done but how?

Civic - Honda :: 1997 - Steering Wheel To Vibrate At Certain Speeds When Braking

I own a 1997 Honda Civic EX. Automatic. 160,000 miles. I have had the front disk rotors and pads replaced five (5) times within the past two years due to "warped" rotor issue. I recently changed the two front calipers as well to rule out caliper issues. Yet I continually end up with a warped right front rotor weeks after putting on new rotors. Here is what happens. Car brakes fine for a week or two with the new rotors. Then shortly afterwards, the right front rotor (passenger side) quickly develops a rubbing -like noise (not a grinding noise) when braking at a low speed. It's not a constant rubbing noise but a rhythmic swoosh swoosh swoosh noise as the tire rotates and the brake is softly applied. You can feel it in the brake pedal. This noise eventually gets louder and louder the more I use the brakes (or, the hotter they get?). It can also cause the steering wheel to vibrate at certain speeds when braking.

I have had it into four different mechanics.

Mechanic 1: Your rotor is warped.
Mechanic 2: You are too hard on your brakes causing the rotor to warp.
Mechanic 3: Did you go through a puddle of water lately?
Mechanic 4: You need new brakes. Period.

This is getting ridiculous. In all my years of driving, I have never encountered this problem. I am not hard on my brakes. I do not believe the "water puddle" theory at all. I should mention, although these are not oem rotors. they are not some cheap Chinese ones either. Something must be causing this rotor to "warp" if it's really warping at all. I have had the tires rotated to rule out a bent rim. It happens no matter what tire is on the right front car. What could be causing this? A bad front end alignment... bad wheel bearing... (although no mechanic ever indicated that as a problem)... bent splash guard... bad master cylinder? Air in the brake lines... old brake fluid???

Prius (Gen 3) :: 2012 Toyota - Front Tires And Steering Wheel Vibrate At 60+ Mph Speeds?

I bought a 2012 Toyota Prius 2 on Jan 28, 2013 (just a little over a month ago). The front tires and steering wheel vibrated at highway speeds (here in NY 65-70mph) and so I took it in, they said it needed wheel balancing and rotation. Fine.

Then I was told to wait it out because of the "snow" and "ice" could be the culprit, fine. Then a week or so later, same problem still, even when it got warmer. Took it back in. This time the wheels were "off balance" again. Hmmm, that's funny. So they did a dynamic or forced balance? I don't know exactly, but it was a step up from "normal" balancing (according to them).

The past couple weeks it hasn't been vibrating nearly as much, but it is coming back again intermittently. Today I was driving home from Watertown, NY to Syracuse. It's about an hour or so drive, and it is a state highway, so it isn't too torn up or potholed. Between 66-70mph the steering wheel vibrates quite bad and RANDOMLY at that. Some roads the car at 70mph feels super smooth others not! And the weirdest part is some of the roads it feels smooth on are bumpy or slightly torn up!

I've looked up all the causes of steering wheel and tire vibrations, and I see that there are about 5-10 potential causes. If I have to take this car in one more time I might just scream.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Left Front Tire Hitting Coilover And Making Car To Vibrate

I installed 2 new axles and replaced the upper motor mounts in my car. Now when I turn to the right the left front tire is running against the coilover and making my car vibrate. I put a 5mm spacer to give it some clearance but it didn't make much of a difference. What could be wrong?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Clunk In Front End

All right, I went ahead and rebuilt my suspension considering everything was worn out. I used upper and lower control arms and all the tie rod ends from O'Reilly's (MasterPro). While I was under there I noticed that the sway bar end links and bushings were deformed and worn, so I changed those out.

The clunky front end is confusing as hell to me. All of the front end bushings and ball joints are new, and if I hit bumps with a little vigor it rattles. Under hard braking to a stop there is a loud clunk from the front left. I have shocks on the way (Monroe Reflexes for the front, Sensatrac load adjusters for the rear), which are the only things left that have been removed and not replaced with new ones.

The truck was perfectly clunk and rattle free with the old worn out bushings and ball joints. I can't imagine why it would start clunking now with a new front end. I felt the new ball joints and they were tight and didn't have any play. The bushings were tight. I'm at the end of my rope with this crap. I've double checked that the ball joint and chassis nuts and bolts are all very tight.

I'm about to break out the torch but i don't want to fry the wheel bearings.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Smoking And Bouncing Front End

My truck is a 1998 F-150 4X4 set up for towing etc. The left front started smoking and the front end just started bouncing around very badly. Of course I pulled off and let it cool down. My question is this; I've pulled the hub and the bearings seem smooth although maybe a bit tight. I've checked the caliper and it seems to be working properly.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: ABS Light On - Little Grinding In Front End

2002 F150 XLT Supercrew 4x4 5.4L V-8, non-7700 payload

Was feeling a little grinding in the front end a couple weeks ago. Turned out to be simple, brake pads were low, and the wear indicator was causing the mild vibration (though no noise). Replaced the pads, all was good.

Then in the middle of a 50 mile drive around the area, the ABS light comes on. Found the front right sensor was bad. Replacement. Put it on, ABS light went off, all is good. Drove probably 30 miles over the course of the next day, then light came back on. Tested the same sensor, and get no resistance. So the new one is bad.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 4WD - Noise From Front End At 35 - 40 MPH?

I bought my current truck this past December (2002 SCREW Lariat FX4) and recently had my first reason to engage 4WD. I noticed a rumbling noise at speed (35-40mph.) After searching this forum, I checked the heat shield near the front drive shaft, and it is not rubbing. Everything looks to be in good working order. The sound is coming from somewhere in the front driveline, not the transfer case, as it the sound continues after the t-case is switched to 2wd, before the center disconnect disengages.

Checked the front diff fluid and it is topped-off. The drive shaft has some significant surface rust, so it could be the u-joints, but it's a pretty straight shot from the t-case to the front diff, so I don't think the sound is coming from there. Where the noise is coming from? CV joints in the half shafts, perhaps? Truck has 106K miles on it, and is in immaculate condition. I doubt it's ever seen any serious 4WD duty, but it did spend it's first two years in the Detroit area, so it may have seen some winter highway use. My last truck was an '01 4x4, and it was always whisper quiet in 4WD.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Loud Squealing Noise Then Pop On Front End

I've had this truck almost 2 yrs now. It is not a 4 x 4. The trouble I am having is on the driver side. What happened first was while I was driving it i heard a loud squealing noise then a loud pop. After that the truck seemed fine I checked under it and everything looked ok. After that I drove it to a couple stores did fine but i heard the loud pop again. Once I left the store I was driving on the highway and it jerked to the left and i heard a grinding/rattling noise. I put my flashers on slowed down and every once in a while it would still pull to the right but the grinding noise remained constant. I parked it waited for a tow and i turned the truck around and drove it up the ramp there was another pop sound but I didn't hear the grinding. It seems to happen on and off. And it doesn't matter if I am turning or going straight.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Sloppy Front Wheel Bearings

In 30 years of wrenching on cars, I've never encountered this problem. Replaced the pads and left rotor. Rotor is typical Chinese rotor. While there, replaced the wheel bearings. Also knocked out the races (with a brass drift) and replaced the races with the ones that came with the new wheel bearings. The bearings are NAPA bearings. Packed the wheel bearings just like always.

Applied some grease just like always on the spindle. Put it all back together. Tightened the wheel bearing nut while rotating the rotor in the opposite direction. Went to maybe 10 ft lbs. Backed the nut off, set it firm finger tight. Installed the cotter pin. Got a whole bunch of sloppiness in the wheel bearings. I can feel a LOT of it when rotating from the 6 o clock and 12 o clock position. What did I miss? NEVER had this happen before. 2002 f 150 2wd

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Front Right Brake Caliper Locking Up

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1999 4X4 XLT - Squeaking Noise In Front

1999 FORD f150 4x4 XLT

When i drive the truck straight, turn left, turn right and even backup i get a Squeaking noise coming from the front and it is loud.

When the truck is in park and i turn the wheel back and fourth it still Squeaks even inches at a time turning it i can hear the Squeaking noise.

I can have the truck shut off and i put my weight on the front bumper making it bounce up and down i can still hear the same Squeaking noise

But when i jacked up the front end and turned the wheel back and fourth the nose is gone and seems to be great.

Sounds like the Squeaking noise is coming from the driver side. What this can be?
