View 4 RepliesI've got a 2003 F150 4x4 supercrew that's got a 9.75" rear end with 3.73 gears. I just replaced clutch packs and spider gear set 2 weeks ago. The last day or two I have noticed that when I make sharp turns that it get a whining like spinning noise. It sounds to me like the spider gears are spinning. It only does it when making sharp turns. There is no noise going down the highway or normal driver. I have noticed at times I get a little shutter when I go to take off or back up. Kinda feels like a brake is hanging. I put friction modifier in when I did the clutch packs and everything. Maybe not enough?
View 5 RepliesI have a 1999 F-150, 4.2L V6 with 206,000 miles that recently developed a rear-end shudder/vibration. According to my door jam axle code (27) and the axle tag (3 37), I have what appears to be a conventional rear differential, even though most of my research would indicate this rear-end is for the F-250. In any case, and based on other online research, I changed the differential oil with a 75W-140 synthetic and added 4oz of a friction modifier. Now the vibration appears to be worse. It primarily vibrates when taking off from a stop, whether turning or not.
I have felt the vibration at speeds up to 60mph, but it is more noticeable at lower speeds. The vibration also seems to diminish after driving the truck for longer periods of time, particularly if at highway speeds. In other words, when I drive to and from work, which is about 30 minutes each way of mostly highway, the vibration is barely noticeable once I exit the highway and slow back down to 35-40mph. When feeling the vibration, if I decelerate, the vibration immediately ceases, but starts again when I accelerate. It's not as noticeable if I accelerate harder, but I generally don't do that. The gears inside the differential didn't have any noticeable wear, chips or slop/play. What may be plaguing my usual trouble-free F150?
i have a 1997 150 4.6l with 166xxx miles. when ever you go to take off there will be no power and then all off the sudden it will shoot up too 4000rpm and then you back off it will be fine. Until you stop and go again. Also when ever you come up to a stop it drops down to 500rpm. What might be going on?
View 14 RepliesNoticed my 2002 F150 had a very slight vibration in the seat / steering wheel when cruising down the highway at 60 MPH.. Very slight, but was not there 2 weeks ago.. It seem to get a little worst as the 2 weeks progressed. Got all 4 tires balanced and rotated... no luck...Took both rear wheels off-- no problems with tires -- checked bearing clearance-- pushed and twisted on driveshaft yolk to check pinion bearing... nothing found......... last resort was drop back end of driveshaft and check U-joint.. It was tight and dry. Put drive shaft in 12 ton press and pushed out the u-joint bearings. Very dry and joint pins were starting to spall....... I mention this because I had checked " clearance" and "slop" and had "no noise" before removal... Truck has 139K miles on original u-joints .......... Something to keep in mind. Eventually it would have worn to the point that it was obvious, but in the first stages of failure, you just get small symptoms.
View 7 RepliesI recently bought a 2003 F150 sport Scab 4x4 with 75k miles from a Ford dealer with a 4.6l auto. we didn't notice it when we test drove it but it has a squeak when going 0-10 mph in forward or reverse. The story goes a week after getting it home we started noticing a vibration and thudding in the rear end when braking so I take it back to the dealer (50 mile trip 1 way) and when I get there the drivers side rear rim is 30 degrees hotter than the passengers so the tear it apart and find the e-brake was dragging so they lube it up and tell me its good to go. I made it around the building and now I feel it dragging iddling around the parking lot and it is still squeaking so I take it right back in.
Long story short after going through this 2 times that day and bringing it back another day they replaced rear pads, calipers, roters and the hoses going to the caliper and tell me its good to go. Well it no longer had the dragging feel and I had to drive through DC traffic so I beat feet for home and on the way noticed its still sqeaking. I call them and they tell me to put a thousand miles on it and maybe the pads just need to wear in (??). so I took a road trip and 1.2k miles later it still squeaks.
I have tried to tell them it may be the u joints (after searching on here I learned that I am taking it back tomorrow and going to try and get something done but they are still saying its something to do with the brakes and probably won't do the u-joints. Normally, they are filling up the gas tank every trip up there and its all been under warranty (gonna see about getting the warrenty extended tomorrow due to this problem has been ongoing since we got it). Should I just let them run their own course and keep making trips back and forth?
So I have an issue with my 03 f150, Basically It clunks in various scenarios such as Accelerating also occurs take off and general breaking/slowing down but not really when stopping. December when it was cold and I was decelerating (not on the break just coasting) it feels like i was driving on the shoulder.
It does it much more in cold weather. Just had the truck out getting a little rough with it for 5 or so hours today and 0 issues with it.
I was thinking it was a slip yoke issue that I hear allot of trucks have the issue but I was at the dealership today and both guys and a mechanic sitting there were like "never had that issue on an 03 f150, might be your back end." They also stated the clunking would always occur and be more prominent when breaking which its not.
I am certain its not the transmission its not occurring with any shift point. Kind of hard to do it if its hard to reproduce in the heat.
I have a 2001 5.4 4x4 supercrew with 300,000 miles.. This truck is my baby. Recently when I start it up and after putting it in gear and begin taking off my engine is loud as if I am revving the engine without any indication in the rpms. I want to say it starts out on the trip a tad sluggish. Is there anything I can do to eliminate?
View 1 RepliesMy husband bought a 1997 Ford F150 and the seller said he changed the brake lines, but the back brakes have dragged on takeoff since he bought it. Just put new shoes on it and it's still doing the same thing, but now the drums are getting hot. Is it possible that the seller got the brake line backwards and that might make the back brakes drag?
View 2 RepliesSo for the past few months I have been hearing a knock sound when taking off from a stop. It does it every time, and its loud enough to hear distinctly. It sounds like it is coming from underneath the cab, maybe the trans or rear engine area. I thought maybe a mount. It only does it when taking off from a stop it does not do it while driving. Where to start. I hope it isn't serious, at this point it is more annoying than anything else.

View 8 RepliesI have a M5OD that I replaced the clutch in in my '99 150 4wd in December . Manual Tranny. Now when taking off in 1st gear the transmission seems to be sliding or shifting backwards, but only in first gear. Got under my truck and looked, can't find any identifying marks to where it might be moving or what is causing this. All frame mounts are tight and the bell housing is flush with the motor. Yes, i did do the clutch change myself in shop class.

issue: snapping sound like crushing tin can at take off and now at a fast stop.
Repairs already done:
upper control arms
lower ball joints
Sway bar link and bushing
4wd cv axle shaft assembly (both side )
Slip yoke grease.
Tie rod ends replace inner and outer
I put the truck an a lift and put it on drive and there is no sound.
Well it's been 300 miles since Ford applied their "special grease" and put on clamps to eliminate the clunk when slowing and the slipping feeling at take off. Now the clunk is back. Every time at 25 it downshifts and clunks, then once again at 10. Drives me nuts. My service advisor wants me to "log" these visits so we can be more aggressive with Ford to get this resolved. I love the truck, but this is annoying driveline slop. Almost like the splines weren't cut right and Ford is using heavy grease to fill the gaps......developing...
View 3 RepliesI have a 98 expedition with the 4.6l 4x4 and it has 158,000 on the dash had a new engine installed at 100,000 it started running rough and sluggish last week so I changed out the spark plugs and while changing the plug I notice oil on the threads of the two rear passenger side plugs. After the new plugs it was smoking pretty bad blueish white smoke. I figured it was the oil from around the threads that had leaked into the cyl.
The smoked cleared after 2 days and ran great for a week. Now its doing the same thing again real rough idle and and its extremely sluggish. I can put the pedal to the floor and she barely wants to move almost like the tranny is going out but the rough idle leads me to believe its and engine problem. I have the check engine light on but can't get any codes. I also tried checking for vacuum leaks by spraying either round the intake and vacuum lines and didn't notice any change in rpms so I'm guess the vacuum is fine.
I've been on a road trip today in East Tennessee in the mountains. At start up and take off from a restaurant tonight, the transmission seemed to be slipping, like it was in neutral. It would rev and then all of a sudden take off. Once it was going, all was fine.
View 19 RepliesI have a 2003 B5.5 1.8T. Recently i started hearing a weird noice in the back of my car like something is loose or rolling around. Had the brakes checked and everything is fine. You only hear it when you stop real sudden or take off real sudden. You can hear it on the inside too but its much louder with the window down.

View 7 RepliesI have a '97 F150 4x4 with the 5.4L engine and automatic transmission. The tranny's been slipping on and off for a couple of years. It started when it was hot outside, I had been driving a long ways, and I was trompin' on the gas to pass someone. Still, the slips were rare. As it got worse during the hot summer months, I just minimized my long-distance travels.
I recently took it to a transmission mechanic. Like some of the feedback to posts in here, he felt it was a problem with the engine - because we had a bad EGR valve signal on the computer. (We still flushed the fluid. I later replaced the EGR and the DPFE. Another mechanic went through everything, replaced some valves that had something to do with the EGR, and feels the engine is 100% (and it runs very, very smooth). For those that will bring it up - I have replaced all of the coils (though it's been a few years). Having actually replaced some numerous times over the years, I can feel when one is bad (of course, the 'check engine' light as well). Lastly, we've replaced all bulbs in the dash so they are all working as well. Also, the transmission is not leaking. The computer system is giving us no errors/throwing codes.
After a couple of weeks, I happened to drive the truck a long distance one day and it started slipping. It got bad enough that it was slipping every time going from first to second gear. It would usually engage as I took my foot off the gas. Since then, because I haven't driven long distances, I have not had a problem.
The transmission mechanic thinks it's still an engine issue. He also mentioned a mechanical/electrical switch system on the side of the transmission (?). Give me a list of things to look at.
I have a 1997 F150 4 x 4 with the 5.4 overdrive transmission. When I accelerate from a stop I can feel the slip of the transmission until I reach exactly 35 miles an hour. Above 35 seems to be normal and have plenty of torque.
The funny thing about this is I have had a 2001 Windstar same 35 miles an hour. I have also owned a 1997 Ford Explorer with this exact same issue. Three different motor and trans combination that will not lock up until you reach 35 miles an hour.
The truck has 213,000 I have replaced all coils fuel filters catalytic converter and torque converter. Have exterior tranny cooler. engine runs good and strong. And no code I have a reader.
When I'm driving and the clutch is slipping a bit ( i.e. starting from a stop) I feel very noticeable vibration. Is that a sign the clutch is starting to do? I feel like a year ago it was smoother action, and I barely had to give it gas to get started ( could start with clutch action mostly).
