Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Slip Or Grinding Noise When Go Up A Hill And It Downshifts Into 3rd Gear

Apr 10, 2014

Ok I have been trying to find out what is going on with my truck and I cant seem to find anything on here that points to all the symptoms I am having. I have a 05 xlt 4x4 with 5.4. For the last 5 months or so I have been noticing a slip or grinding noise when I go up a hill and it downshifts into I believe 3rd gear. It sounds like going over rumble strips on the road but only lasts a second. It also does it sometimes when I pull out from a stop.Also when I let off gas or brake to a stop it seems to shudder a bit.

Maybe its my imagination since I keep hearing for the grinding sound, I don't know anymore.Its driving me nuts(er). It doesn't do it all the time either.It has only 65,000 miles on it and never towed. I know I am due for a total tranny flush since it never had one. Could this be the whole problem? Iv been reading other stories that sound close to mine but they never mentioned about the noise when pulling out. Could it be the rear end? I am totally lost on this one.Other then that problem it runs great. Shifts nice.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Grinding Noise When Turning Left

First I will start off by stating that my truck is a 2005 Ford F150 2WD Regular Cab 6.5 Bed, with the V6.

My problem is, when making a left turn at low speeds, I have a grinding noise that corrects itself upon straightening out the truck. This seems to happen on turns in the parking lots etc. It almost sounds like the tires are rubbing but the tires are the same BFG's that have been on the truck for 40,000 miles and have never rubbed. I am thinking it might be the power steering pump but am unsure. I do not have access to a lift right now but I have done the shake test on all of the suspension components and nothing seems out of place or loose.

Golf IV R32 :: 3rd Gear Grinding On Downshifts?

VW says I might need a new clutch. I have 85k on original. When are your clutches going? Do I need to change the dmflywheel as well?

i thought it might be a bad synchro. It only does it when warmed up and on downshifts. I can let the rpms drop all the way down before shifting and it will grind. rev matching i think still grinds. wont do it cold.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Funny Rattle Noise Under Load When Going Up A Hill

I bought a 2004 F150 XLT 4x4 122,000KM. I used to have a 1995 BMW 318TI but I built a cabin and a truck seems to go with it. I have already done some work like new plugs, oil change, tranny flush, fuel filter change and Air Filter. I noticed about 2 weeks ago going up to the cabin a rattle sound when I was going up a hill. It is coming from the right side (FRONT) and it sounds like its from the wheel. I really does it if I give it some gas and then press a bit more on the peddle and then you here like marbles in a tin can if that makes sense. I just got back from my mechanic and we took it out and it is still doing it so we jacked it up and checked everything. Their are no loose clips and back plates making noise. We did notice that a heat shield near the cat was rubbing and we adjusted it, this did not solve out problem. We were both looking at each other after an hour wondering what the hell this could be. I am going back on Wed and he is going to hook it up with some kind of machine with microphones and a headset to pinpoint the problem. It does not affect the performance of the truck but it is very annoying when I need to give it some gas to pass or go up a big hill.

Avalon 2005-12 :: Transmission Downshifts To First Gear When It Should Stay In Second

We have a 2007 Limited that we love everything about except the way the transmission downshifts to first gear when it seems to me it should stay in second. My inlaws have a 2007 XLS and it doesn't do this. This is our third Avalon and the only one to do this. The dealer we bought from says this is normal but I strongly disagree. Is there a service bulletin on this or what else can be done.

IS F (2008-2014) :: Transmission Downshifts Automatically To 5th Gear

I've noticed lately in auto mode (not in sport mode) when I'm going downhill on a section (doing maybe 45-50 mph) of road and apply the brakes, the transmission wants to downshift automatically to 5th gear. I know in Sport mode if you are not using paddle shifters this seems normal. I don't think this is normal in just auto mode, non sport.

I don't think mine is normal as I don't remember it downshifting this much in auto mode. I'm thinking fluid level needs to be checked. I know there is a sensor in the transmission that senses the angle of the car so not sure if it's being overly aggressive or not.

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Making Grinding Noise While Turning On Hill

a few times when making a tight turn on hilly terrain or a hill on a road, I've noticed a grinding sound in the front of the truck and a vibration in the steering wheel. I've so far chalked this up to the hill assist feature, but today I was on relatively flat ground in a parking lot with a dip in it. While crossing the dip in a tight turn, I noticed the same thing again.

I've checked the tires/wheel wells and there is no rubbing, etc.

Lexus GS 2006-11 :: 2008 Metal Grinding Noise In 2nd Gear

I am having several issues. I got the lexus dealership to service my transmission recently. I got it back with a weird smell. It smells like body odor. I had to reach out to hendrick corporate for them to address the problem without charging me. Turns out it was the fluid they used. I could smell the smell from inside if i wasn't recirculating the air. They changed the fluid again and it still smells. Is my transmission doing this because it is too hot?

This smell was never an issue until after the first transmission service. And now I'm hearing a metal grinding sound in 2nd gear past 4600 rpm. It still shifts smooth but 2nd gear might be slipping. Something just doesn't seem right. o yea they gave me my car back with my brakes sticking after stopping in traffic. I took it back and was told my brake pads in the rear lost 2mm in less than 650 miles.

By the way this sound can be heard in 1st but is more prevalent in 2nd. It is not heard in any other gears. And when in sport mode the sound instantly stops when i shift up into 3rd.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: 2008 - Grinding Noise When Shift From First To Second Gear

I am now getting a grinding noise when I shift from first to second gear. It sounds like the two metals rubbing each other. Its not happening all the time, but for the past two days a bit frequently

I had reported this grinding noise when I turn left a month back. Was thinking because of my worn out tyres, but apparently not.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Grinding Noise All The Time In 2wd That Goes Away In 4HI

Read everything I could and couldn't find a problem/solution similar to mine:

- Replaced broken (in three pieces) actuator on driver's side. Also replaced hub assembly (bearings went bad). Afterward started getting the grinding noise all the time in 2wd that goes away in 4HI.

- Replaced the entire hose assembly since I was not getting vacuum at driver side end hose. Still wasn't getting vacuum, turns out passenger side actuator diaphram was completely torn up as well (checked vacuum with hose on passenger actuator, not removing and plugging like I should have), so replaced the passenger side actuator too.

- Driver side grinding noise went away completely, now getting grinding noise on passenger side ONLY WHEN PRESSING ACCELERATOR. Take foot off accelerator and coast down road/highway noise goes away. Noise also goes away when putting truck in 4HI.

My latest actions: I've checked vacuum at both ends of hose while someone in park throttles truck up to 3k rpm, vacuum doesn't appear to change at either hose end while opposite side is attached to its actuator. Replaced passenger side actuator again thinking the first was defective, no change in grinding noise. Greased ring on wheel hub where actuator attaches thinking I was getting a leak at the actuator/hub seal, no change. Still only a grinding noise when accelerating, not while coasting with truck running.

The perplexing part: If it is a vacuum issue, how is it I am getting good enough vacuum from the driver side but not from the passenger side, since the driver side hose connection is downstream from the passenger side? Also, how am I not seeing the vacuum drop when checking at the hose end of either side while someone throttles truck up in rpms?

My thoughts: Definitely a vacuum leak somewhere in the system, minor enough to not notice right away on gauge, thinking to check the vacuum box and check valves next. Also thinking the passenger side hose from solenoid has a small leak causing the issue on the passenger side and not the driver side anymore, so thinking of putting the old hose back in to see if there is any change (I had replaced the hose prior to knowing the passenger actuator was torn up so I am not sure if the hose is really bad).

3-piece actuator I described above in picture for reference. Honestly I was not surprised, this has been my luck with this truck.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Grinding Noise From Front Passenger Side

2005 ford f150 Fx4 So last Friday I started hearing a grinding noise from the passenger side front of my truck. sounded like metal on metal. So I started rooting around and noticed that bottom ball joints were shot. so replaced bottom ball joints on both side. I aslo replaced wheel bearing hub assembly on both sides, still heard the grinding. So I noticed that both axles were slinging grease, so I replaced them on both sides.

Still heard the grinding noise. So then I removed everything from the passenger side and noticed that the locking hub actuator was grinding both axle and the wheel bearing hub. So I just got done replacing that on the passenger side, put it all back together, and still grinding noise ringtones free. Also replaced the 4wd solenoid that they said gets water in it, and I replaced the check valve. And I put new Rotors and breaks. What it could be?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Grinding Noise From Rear Side When Brake

Every time I brake, there is an awful grinding sound in the rear of my truck. It doesn't seem to be affecting the brake strength, however something is obviously wrong. I have looked at the brake pads and they seem to be in good shape. I am a mechanical misfit, but I hate getting ripped off by other people at the brake shops.

I have a 2005 F150 113,000 FX4. When I put the truck into 4x4 high the light comes on and the front driveshaft engages. Same with 4x4 low. the problem is that the hubs never actually lock. When I move forward in some mud or wet grass the right front hub makes this grinding noise like it is actually trying to engage but never does. Same with 4x4 low. I do not have any weird noises when I drive in 2wd.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Bearing Noise - Constant Grinding / Whine

We've had a lot of rain here in pa lately and i hit a few big puddles the other day and now i have a growl slash wine in the front of my motor,now i narrowed it down to something driven by the bely because I removed the belt and no noise all pulleys feel good and smooth except the ac compressor if you spin it by hand it has a rough/dry feeling and sound to it but the noise doesn't change with the ac on or off its just constant grinding/whine. Replace the ac compressor pulley bearing that what I am thinking it is and don't really want to change out the whole compressor..

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Grinding Noise Coming From Front Wheels

I have an intermittent grinding noise coming from what sounds like both front wheels, it sounds like metal on metal almost like something metal rubbing the rotor but I just put new pads on and the noise was there before as well with nothing touching the rotors but the pads. The sound will appear out of no-where at low speeds of 35 or below and will continue until I brake and slow down, just before I come to a compete stop the noise will stop with a slight clunk.

I can then drive away with no noise. I am pretty sure it is not brake related except maybe ABS somehow but was also thinking front axle or diff, also have read posts that are bearing related, but both at the same time?. It is the slight clunk before stopping that I can not figure out is related to. It is an 05 f150 xlt 5.4 super cab 4wd with 85k miles

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: While Turning Makes Rubbing / Grinding Noise From Front?

I've got a new issue that is happening on the front end of my truck. Whenever I try turning my wheel while driving, I get this rubbing/grinding noise coming from the front of my truck. It only happens when the wheels are in motion. It seems to happen less when I'm driving at higher speeds, but I can notice it make the sound at any speed. I tried driving it slowly in an empty parking lot while turning and it's definitely making the sound every time the tires rotate.

I took it in for an alignment because this was happening every time I drove, whether it be driving straight or making a turn. Now that my alignment has been fixed, it no longer make this noise if I am driving in a straight line, so it only seems to happen when I'm turning. I had the mechanic check to see if they could reproduce the issue. The mechanic was able to hear what I hear, but when he put it on the lift at the shop, he was not able to reproduce the sound.

IS F (2008-2014) :: 2nd Gear Slip On Cold Start When Accelerate

I noticed on cold start , when I start to accelerate (usually i push down maybe 20-30% on the peddle. not WOT) i noticed when the tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd there is a sudden jerk that feels like a slip in the tranny.

you can hear and see the RPM shoot from like 3k to ~4.5k (during the shift) and back down to less than 3k on the 2nd gear.

This only happens when the engine started from a cold start and accelerating at a moderate pace. After a minute or two , i start moving from a full stop and it doesn't do it anymore. I have a 2008 model.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 FX4 Truck Gear Shift Stuck In Park

My truck gear shift is stuck in Park (console type). I have been reading threads that discuss potential causes such as blown fuses, bad brake switch, bad brake shift interlock actuator, and even ignition switch. All fuses are okay. Before I try to get into all the other possibilities, I have a question around what the local auto parts worker suggested. He said that there is a small plastic piece that may have slipped down interfering with gear movement. This could make sense, especially since the white manual release lever doesn't seem to be moving.
