I have a 2004 F150 with a 5.4L with a little over 100,000 miles. And the engine knocks like it about 1 1/2 quarts low on oil! I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I'd like to know how to get this fixed. I've actually had 2 different people ask how I got a diesel engine in a 1/2 ton truck!
View 11 RepliesI have a 2004 F150 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 . I got a new transmission put in and a Oil change shortly after. A few weeks later I got a knocking noise. No check engine light, starts up great, No real notable problems just the noise. At Idle no noise just the usual cam phaser ticking, but once the engine is warmed up at about 1100 RPM it starts knocking like a . I took it to a few different shops one was sure it was the timing area so they replaced the timing chain, tensioner, pully. ect. Took it to a ford dealer where he didn't really look at it just said you need a new engine.
I went to another ford dealer where they said rod knock or stuck lifter but if that were the case shouldn't it knock constantly? another shop said VCT soleinods, Spark plugs. another said it could be the flex plate! I'm aware of the cam phaser diesel ticking noise they notoriously have but thats not it. I've parked it for a few years to be safe but started it weekly. I didn't intend on having it sit for so long but due to work situations and what not it has sat but now I'm on a mission to make it my daily driver again. I'm no mechanic but I'm not totally green to vehicle mechanics so ill be inspecting what i can within my limits.

I have an 05 f150 5.4 v8 super crew cab and I bought it for 3000 because of a cracked block. I bought a re-manufactured engine and installed it and now i have a knocking that wont go away. After I started it up it sounded beautiful for about 10 minutes and then i had a knocking start up. I have put about 30 miles on the new engine and still have the knocking. I let it sit over night and I started it up and there was no knocking so i drove about 3 miles to the gas station and by the time I got there the knocking was back. it runs fine no other issues but why do I have this knocking with a new engine.
View 9 RepliesI have an 04 F150 Lariat with the 5.4. I get alot of noise out of the top of the motor. I hear lots of stories of sludge issues, is that the problem or do I need to have the motor gone through? the knock is not horrible but when the motor is warm the noise is pretty apparent!
View 3 RepliesI have a 2007 F-150 4x4 5.4L. I recently had a problem with my engine. It had the knocking noise thats known for the 5.4. My issue is i replaced the engine (it had 275,000 miles and was a work truck before i bought it) As well as all the timing components including the hydraulic tensioners, new phasers, new guides, new solenoid, and a new camshaft positioning sensor and it still isnt fixed.

The truck has 170k miles, I just bought it about two months ago and it was running perfect, drove it to the beach two or three times (4 hour drive) no problems whatsoever. Two weeks ago I noticed it start rocking a bit at idle ONLY when warm, check engine light came on so I ran the code and it said the Cam shaft positioning sensor was bad so I replaced both of those, then the next code I got was for the vct solenoids, replaced both of those and the problem is still persisting. It is odd to me in the fact that when its cold, it runs flawlessly, no problem accelerating/idling/maintaining speed/smoke nothing at all.
As soon as it gets warm it will still do everything flawlessly EXCEPT idle. the idle rpm is around 300-400 and it rocks and knocks terribly.. If i am stopped and I apply some throttle in park or nuetral, just enough to get the rpm up to around 800-900, its perfectly fine. no more rocking no more knocking but as soon as i let my foot off the gas it goes right back to feeling like its going to fly out from underneath the hood.
So my question is why is this? What on earth is going on here? and how do I fix it? And why is there not a manual idle control. Ford place said there was likely damage to the head and recommended a full engine replacement.
I have a 08 F-150 4x4 King ranch with 5.4L Duel fuel motor. Last year we were backing a trailer and the whole truck started shaking. Stopped, but it in forward and no problems, tried backing again and same thing. It did back up but shook worse with more gas.
We took it to a mechanic who said without even looking at it "Sounds like a reverse clutch, common problem" So we had them rebuild the trans, a few months later it did it again once but we were 300 miles from home. Since we could still back we did what we needed to do and drove home with no problems. Dropped it back at the mechanic who said he couldn't find anything and eventually had a yelling fight with my wife. We couldn't get it to happen again either until last week it did it again and she grabbed the camera to record it.
Took the truck back with the video, he had a mechanic look at it and said the transfer case mount bolts were loose, tightened them up which did get rid of a knock that we had since the trans rebuild and said that was the problem, it was binding and causing the shaking. This weekend did the same thing again.
Now the truck is back at the shop and only 100 miles or so left on the warranty (12m/12k). So after that long story my question is if the problem really was/is the reverse clutch or if there is something else wrong that he never fixed and was just intermittent enough that we let him get away with it this long?
Sounds like a rod knock on startup but quiets after idle down. what gives and can this be a big problem? 75000 mi.

This sound is on the interior and comes from the far right corner of the dashboard.(almost as if someone is tapping with there finger every other second). There is no correlation with anything else being turned on or off that affects this sound.(i.e. air) It simply happens once I reach a certain speed and is not an outside noise. When I slow back down under 45 mph the knocking subsides.

5.4. So I have a 2004 F-150 that just passed 80,000 miles and a month ago it started making a very loud noise on startup, but only cold startup, meaning if I haven't used the truck in about three hours. View 7 RepliesSo after a decent drive when I get to a redlight / stop sign / etc the truck will idle rough and shake but giving it a little bit of gas (1k RPM) seems to smooth it out however it doesn't throw any codes or the CEL. The truck is a 2008 F150 with the 5.4 and 90k miles.
I've searched quite a bit on this issue and I can't seem to find any real fixes other than swap parts out until something works and I've heard everything from filters to cam phasers or low oil pressure (I will be taking it to the mechanic to check the oil pressure)
so far I've:
Replaced the air and fuel filters
Changed the oil and oil filter (synthetic and OEM filter)
cleaned the MAF and cleaned the throttle body
also is 2008 equipped with an IAC Valve because I've read that it wasn't and I can't seem to find the IAC if it is.
Getting these codes what they mean or need to do ..to get rid of them...p0022, p0171, p0174, p0183, p0340, p0300, p0316, p2006 did timing n plugs fuel filter n gas filter getting very bad gas mileage it runs good but here a ticking in motor at idle and more as u accelerate, running rough....
View 7 RepliesI have a 2006 f150 it was making a knocking noise after the engine oil temp reached 160* and made the noise to 1700rpms. I thought it was the cam phasers so I replaced them. The truck is still making the noise and running rough and stalling but not as bad and not as often. Before it did it all of the time. The truck is timed properly. I had a new cam sensor and tried it but that did not work. I watched vct on the scan tool and both cams are in sycn.
View 2 RepliesHaving issue with his truck. He bought it 3 months ago and has no history. 166k. You now know as much as I do about the truck! He knows little about automobiles so fact finding has been difficult. I have done all my own work on countless US and foreign automobiles over the last 30 years and never take my vehicles anywhere. I will try to post as much detailed info as I can. I have read tons of posts now on various forums so I am up to speed on VCT and phasers.
This one seems similar, but not exactly the same symptoms which is why I am here. I have already pulled the VCTs and found the passenger side missing the top screen. I swapped them from side to side which made no difference. I checked ohms and they were at 15 which is normal from what I read. They were very clean and moved easily when I took them out so they were not gunked up so I don't think that's the problem. It idles very smoothly and isn't rough at all.
I have posted a video of the knocking/dieseling noise (link below) coming from the passenger side. The knocking starts as soon as the truck is started hot or cold (outside temps right now 70F-90F Houston). I can make the knock disappear by gently depressing the gas pedal going from idle of about 650/700 to maybe 750/800 and it will go away completely as long as I keep it gently depressed. As soon as I lift up it returns.
If I rev it up to 2000-3000 rpm it does not knock, however, as soon as I lift off quickly, it seems to knock at a high speed, hangs for a second and then knocks all the way back to idle. However, if I rev up and then lift off very slowly, it will not knock. I have tried to locate the exact location of the knock, but doesn't exactly seem right at the phaser, but actually back around the 2nd and 3rd spark plug area, but I can't tell exactly. I've had a couple people tell me the same when I asked them to tell me where its coming from. The noise is bouncing around in there so difficult to pinpoint exact area.

Trying to find any information on what's happening with my 2008 2.2 Diesel Santa Fe ... Been driving fine until I pulled up at a set of traffic lights yesterday and started hearing a loud rattle- knocking coming from the engine at idle.
Put it in gear and drove and it goes away. When at idle if you rev the car it goes away.
Mechanic seems to think it could be clutch as it vibrates the gearbox, but sound seems to be more prominent around the engine, my thoughts were maybe a loose timing tensioner.
Clutch replacement is very expensive.
