My truck started making this whistling sound a few thousand miles ago. Its a high pitched squeal coming from somewhere under the hood. There doesn't seem to be any pattern or certain time when it does it. Ive read on here about an alternator problem on these trucks. Or could it be my S&B intake?
View 13 RepliesI just bought a 2006 F150 SuperCrew with a 5.4L engine and since the weather has turned cold, I've noticed an intermittent high pitched squeal coming from the engine compartment. I've replaced the serpentine belt and the idler pulley plus another belt pulley but none of the above worked.
I've also had two separate mechanics look at the problem and both are at a loss as to what could be causing the noise. The guess is maybe its an air leak coming from either the intake or vacuum lines. But nobody is really sure.
The noise seems to really become noticeable when the temperature gets below 20 degrees and around 2000 rpms, but sometimes it happens at other times. Where this extremely annoying sound might be coming from?
I have a high pitched squeal coming from the back windows during operation. I am pretty confident it's not the window assembly itself (linkage, track, etc in the door), but rather the weatherstripping type material that physically lays against the glass at the bottom of the window opening on the door. This happens in both up and down directions of the window.
It DOES NOT squeal when the material is wet, and thus is the reason that I've been able to pinpoint the cause. It's likely that the window channels could be contributing to this as well. The problem is...I don't know how to solve this without applying a lubricant that will smear/streak my windows.
I've already taken clean rags and wiped both the inner and outer portions of this material to remove dirt and dust that they gather...no change in the noise. Is there a way to "condition" the material so they will soften up, without leaving a residue that will streak the window?
My 2002 PSD X with 258K miles has a high pitched squeal in the engine compartment. I only had a minute to look at it as my wife was leaving with it. But, I was able to stick my head under the hood and it seems like it is coming from the front of the engine. Trying to pinpoint where the squeal is coming from with all of the other engine noises is tough. I suspect one of the bearings up there like idler pulley, tensioner pulley, alternator, AC compressor, water pump. The alternator has about 70K miles. The other items I don't know.

It only occurs in motion under full or partial engine load (or in drive w/ PB engaged) with the A/C on. It's coming from the front of the engine compartment.
I have an '08 Ranger, automatic. For the last several months, the truck has been making an intermittent high-pitched squeal/whine, but only after it has been warmed up (10--15 minutes driving) and only while it is idling. As soon as I'm driving, the whine stops; whine will occur both in drive (but stopped) and in park. The whine will not happen every day I drove, nor will it happen at every stop. When it does squeal, the squeal will fade in and out in volume.
An interesting kicker I've found recently: it seems to be dependent on electrical draw. For example, if I'm sitting idle with the lights on, and the truck is squealing, and then I turn the lights off, it suddenly squeals less. Still squeals, but less than with the lights on.
I have had mechanics check all the usual suspects, belts, etc, but have not found anything amiss. Nor can I actually get the squeal to occur when I visit the mechanics.
I have recently noticed that there is a loud, high-pitched whistling sound coming from under my hood that has progressively gotten worse over the weeks. At first, it would only occur when I had my AC or heat on and would stop immediately once i turned the AC/heat off, and will also happen from time to time when I accelerate. Now, this noise is happening right when I start my car and takes a few seconds to stop.
View 4 RepliesA high pitched squeal appears to come from the front of the a/c compressor whenever the clutch engages. When the clutch disengages the compressor stops spinning, and the squeal stops. I can watch and listen to this as the system cycles with the a/c switched on. If I turn off the a/c, no squeal. I'm guessing the bearings in the compressor are going out. However, the system still cools normally, so apparently no gas has leaked out.
Does this imply the compressor must be replaced, or could injection of some oil into the system possibly fix it...?
This car only has 73,000 miles on it. I've owned 2 other TB's and a couple classic Mustangs with much higher miles and never seen an a/c compressor bearings fail.
2007 Sonata SE, 74,000 miles
Just took the car in for brake service (not the dealership) because of what I was convinced was a brake pad sensor warning sound - something I've heard with other cars I've had, and been correct about. However, the tech said the pads were fine.
The sound is a high pitched squeal, intermittent, coming from the passenger front wheel. It can be heard when coasting at moderate speed (30 mph or so), not so much when accelerating, and especially when turning left. It got worse today, with a low grinding sound at moderately slow braking speed that started after about two hours of start and stop driving (house hunting). The car has needed a couple re-alignments and will have to get checked for possible camber? adjustment (rear tires wore badly on outside edges, far less pronounced on front tires). Car has tendency to pull to the right.
Any thoughts on a main culprit here for the squealing-grinding noise or about the possible inter-relatedness of symptoms.
There is a whistling noise that is coming from under the hood of my Jeep. It is more noticeable on cold days. It temporarily disappears when my foot is on the accelerator or after I have been idling at a stop sign for 30 seconds. The noise starts again when I start driving.
View 6 RepliesMy 2005 Ford Freestar with 164k miles experiences a high pitched whistling noise coming from the front end after a few minutes of highway speed driving. It sounds like a tea kettle whistle. It starts out as a quick pulsed whistle then moves to a solid whistling noise. I've heard it driving straight and turning. The sound pulsates if I turn the steering wheel slightly to the left or right but seems to occur more when I turn right. The sound does not occur if van is not in motion and will stop just before car comes to rest at a stop. Three repair shops have looked at this and none of them can replicate the sound while van is on a lift but one shop did hear it during a test drive. All three shops have been unable to locate / diagnose this whistling noise. They all state brakes are in very good shape.

View 2 RepliesHear a high pitched whistle inside the cabin while driving above 60 mph? I can even hear it over the radio most of the time, with the windows up! I have found it to be the mirrors! After hearing this noise, and pinpointing when it occurs, we finally found it is the mirrors. When they are folded in at speed, the noise disappears completely. I had it to the dealer, who couldn't pinpoint it, and I was trying to blame it on the tires, but found this instead.
View 14 RepliesI'm have a 2011 6.7, 180,000. I have noticed a high pitched whistle, not an turbo whine, that disappears after the boost drops to less that the first mark on the gauge 5-10psi??? It stays consistent in tone, the mileage is good, power is good normal 6.7!!.

Recently changed all 4 pads + the rear rotors. about 2 weeks after this the car started making a horrible noise from the rear driver side wheel- like the tires were dragging metal.
We took off the wheel last night, replaced the caliper, and discovered one caliper bolt was missing. We think this caused the caliper to misplace itself and start riding the rotor. The caliper was also in pretty bad shape so we went ahead and replaced it because we had already bought the part.
Anyway, we put everything together, drove it last night a short distance, everything was fine.
Today after driving apx. 25 miles since the replacement, the car has started whistling. I'm not sure where the noise is coming from, but it only happens at higher speeds, and I don't know if turning affects it but it happens going straight. It is a cyclical type of sound and goes away when braking.
Note: when replacing the caliper, my dad did not use the little metal brackets because we couldn't figure out how to place them and didn't think we needed them. Would that cause this noise? Is that dangerous to do?
UPDATE: I've mislead you all! Upon further inspection the whistling noise is coming from the serpentine belt area. I had assumed that it was coming from the wheel because we had JUST messed with it, but I was wrong. Now I'm wondering what's going on with the belt!
My car occasionally makes a high pitched whine while driving it's very loud and very frustrating. I've come to the following conclusions: It only happens when the car is warm, it only happens at speeds above 40mph, it doesn't correspond to either accelerating or decelerating, it happens either way and in between. I've had people in the car while it's happened and the noise seems to come from the driver's side rear wheel. Sometimes it gets so loud and then gets even louder when I begin to apply the brakes, it's as if it starts screaming.
I've had mechanics take apart the complete brake system on every wheel and put them back together. They've put anti-squeal on the brakes to no avail. While driving the noise can come and go, with no apparent reason why. It happens in rain and on warm sunny days. Also, the noise seems to oscillate as if it is something that's spinning, I'd guess it's at approximately 160 beats per minute. This has been occurring for about a year, it was not this way when I got the car. No mechanics have ever found anything, but it's so loud! And so annoying and embarrassing. This can't be normal, what is it!?
This evening, my F150 with 2,600 miles developed a high pitched squeal, much like you might experience on an older vehicle with failing front brakes. Yes, that same squeal/grind the brakes make...metal on metal. It came in instantly while at highway speeds. It was VERY loud. The pitch didn't really change with speed...it was pretty consistant going slow or fast. There was no vibration, chatter or growl as I would expect with a failing bearing.
It was definately in the driveline/brakes. I was 10 miles away from a friends house, so I turned around and took it back to his place. Shortly after turning around, it quieted, only sounding when I would turn ( like a wheel bearing would when being side loaded ). I looked at the brake disks, thinking something was grinding on one of them. The outsides of the disks looked fine. Due to the shields on the inside, I couldn't see.
Later in the evening, I had to drive it back home, about 50 miles. Again, it was quiet unless turning fairly hard. By the time I got home, the squeal had turned into an intermitant growl/thump, as if a warped rotor was banging on the caliper. The noise was 1 to 1 with the rotation of the driveline. But still no vibration. Brakes work perfectly and the noise doesn't change with brake use. Backing up and turning hard results in a variety of sounds, including squeaks.
The hubs and CV joints felt cool. The brake disks were not hot as if they were dragging.
It is 4x4 / 3.7l
I have a 2006 350. When I am pulling my camp trailer (about 12,500 lbs) up a grade I hear a fan or blower turn on and I get a high pitched squeal. It will also have a beep and my in dash display will say high engine temp. I have a bullydog pmt programmer (i tow with it in stock mode) the display will show my coolant temp at about 180 degrees. If I pull over and let it idle for about 2 minutes the warning clears and the temp gauge returns to normal. the display reads about 180 degrees the whole time this goes on. I know the engine is not over heating so why do i get this warning and squeal?
View 4 RepliesWhile driving home tonight in the snow, about half away home I noticed the most god awful high pitched squeal sound coming from what sounded like the back passenger side of the car. The squeal was so loud it made me cringe. I couldn't really get any near 40 mph because I could hear it start and instantly it would become really loud and would only stop when I slow down almost completely and then maintain a speed around 30 mph. It's pitch black out so I couldn't conduct a real thorough inspection however a quick look over and I didn't see anything wrong.
View 22 RepliesMy wife loves her Mercedes 1999 320CLK. Low mileage (120,000), excellent interior and body condition. One problem. When she turns on the heater there is a very high pitched whistle that gets loud and then slowly tapers off. This repeats from time to time. Randomly there is a sound like a flap/door slamming shut. All sound comes from behind the dash. Also, from the dash behind the steering wheel area you hear a sound kind of like someone squeezing a plastic water bottle - plastic crackling sound. Our mechanic took a look at this and told us that some sort of hose was loose. It was reconnected and things got better for a little while....now its back. Once in a while this happens with the AC.
View 5 RepliesI recently purchased a used 2009 Kia Rio. I really am enjoying the car. While there is nothing fancy to it, it gets me to and from work and that's basically what I need. However, when I apply the brakes, there is a high-pitched squeal that is made until the car is almost at a stop. It does this I would say 90% of the time. The brakes work just fine and are in fact very sensitive. I've tried researching this online and it seems a lot of people have this problem because of the type of brake pad used. The dealership I purchased it from is more than an hour away from my home, so I am reluctant to drive down there if there really is nothing that will be done.
