I just bought an '04 F150 from a friend. It has 250K miles on it. When I got the truck there were no tapping noises coming from the engine. Now that I changed the oil, at start up till about 5 miles down the road, I hear the tapping noise. I put Castrol high mileage 5W-20 in it. Could it just be the oil I'm using or something more expensive?

Recently I got a flashing 'Check Engine' light and a rough running engine (along with a tapping noise) when I was passing someone (and pulling a trailer). I retrieved codes 300, 304, & 305. I can't swear to it, but I think the tapping noise started at the same time as the coil problem.
I replaced coils #4 & #5 (later that same day) and the engine smoothed back out but the tapping noise is still hanging around. The noise speeds up at higher RPM's and doesn't go away if I shift into neutral. Oil level and pressure are fine and I only use Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft filters (and change the oil every 5K miles).
Not sure if this is relevant: I think I have bad valve guide seals (blue smoke after long idles) but no other problems that I am aware of. It sort of sounds like a lifter, but is there a good way to pin it down? Is it possible that this tapping is related to the bad coils?
Today I decided to do some maintenance on the truck as it needed an oil change and some other unrelated misc stuff.
1. I seafoamed the engine thoroughly. I bought two cans of this stuff, half of a can went into the fuel, another half can in through the brake booster vacuum hose, and I dumped a full can of into the oil. Took it for a 30 minute drive, let the ol' gal smoke as it usually does on a seafoam, and then changed the oil. No noises, I noticed immediately improvement in acceleration.
2. Upon intial startup after the oil change, I thought the motor was coming apart. It was only for about two seconds, (i was counting to make sure) if it didn't have oil pressure and no noise by 3, I was shutting it off. It hasn't done it since.
Is it possible I just knocked some crap loose in the heads causing the oil drain a lot faster into the pan than I expected? I'll try it again in a few hours after everything has cooled off and oil has drained back into the pan, but I wanna make sure I didn't damage anything. Still drives good, no problems, no noises since.
The last oil change I did, I didn't do a Seafoam, but I figured with winter coming it's a good idea to get her running in top form. I used Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, with a Motorcraft oil filter for those wondering.
Truck has 133K on the clock, and it's had the slight cam phaser tick since I've purchased it, no other problems. I bought it almost a year ago.
My truck has 91,000 miles and started last week with a tapping noise one the right side. Mechanic said could be cam phaser, lifters or crank case problem....
View 8 RepliesI've got an 06 F150 5.4, and its making some noise. It has a constant tapping noise that can be more easily heard when I'm attempting to order my fries at the drive thru. The issue is, I'm having some difficulty identifying it. The tapping noise is very noticeable at idle, and becomes sickeningly loud at approximately 1000 rpm (in neutral) and almost disappears after 1200 rpm. i know for sure that it is not the normal noisy injectors, and it sounds too distinct to be a lash adjuster or lifter. I have not been around a truck with bad cam phasers to know what it sounds like. I don't want to start throwing parts at it until i know where to look.

View 4 RepliesI'm having an issues with my Santa Fe MY07 - Basically I was driving down the dual carriage way last week when suddenly the oil light came on and with the 500m it took me to stop a loud tapping noise was coming from the engine as it seized - The break down people came out to the car as they were inspecting it they informed me that the Sump cap was missing - the car is under warranty - however Hyundai as say that because the cannot find out why the sump cap had came off (and that in there mind they cannot give any reason why it should of) it is there for NOT a manufacturing issue and that they would not cover the repairs under warranty...
View 4 RepliesI have noticed that when the car was in park today right after I started her I heard a semi loud tapping noise coming from the engine... It slowed down when I turned the wheels or played with the brakes... As I went into drive the noise went away after about 20 feet of driving..
What this could be? Is it normal... Just bought the car last week with 45K miles on it and just want to make sure if it is a normal noise or not or whether I should bring her into the dealer.

I already replaced the MAF so what else could it be I cleared it once and the cel came right back on. I have a stasight pipe from the catback on my car and the cabin started smelling like burning plastic and eggs every time I accelerate. I'm going on a road trip tom and was wondering if I'll be fine. The car has a bit more noise coming from the engine the usual more like a swiping tapping noise

Ever since I changed the motor mounts (although I am not sure if this has anything to do with it) after the engine warms up or after some driving, when the engine is idling I hear a clicking or tapping noise coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. It doesn't seem to tied to the rpm; I can rev the engine a little without the tapping going faster, and when a shift between neutral or park or drive the tapping will briefly slow down almost to a stop before going back to its regular pace. After the revs get above 1500 or so it seems to stop.
View 6 RepliesThis monday i found this horrible noise coming from the engine... My first thought was a pulley bearing, yet none of them at the front appeared to be the cause, and standing in front of the bay it sounded like it came from the engine itself (which would be really bad news). Well, i parked the truck until today and i went to check if i could find the cause. I used a mech's stethoscope at the engine and found nothing strange, turned the engine off and touched the pulleys to feel if any was getting hotter than the others... no dice...
Then took the belt off and tried every pulley by hand, all worked ok, yet when i turned the Alternator's it flashed a little spark every now and then (that was just a hint, i wasn't sure). To finally rule out the engine, i turned it on without the belt (that would leave all the pulleys out of the equation). It worked fine and made no strange noises. I cleaned several pulleys and placed the belt back, and turned the engine on once again, this time keeping my attention at the alternator, enough said, it made several spark noises and suddenly, i saw a cap flying of its back. It turned out to be the bearing at the back of the alternator, it was destroyed and losing shrapnel all over, take a look:
Now, need to know what is the part number of the measures of this bearing. (I'll take what's left of the bearing to the store, but i like to be sure of what I'm looking for).
My 2006 f150 was making a noise that's coming from the engine. It sound like rocks in the engine. When I'm going 50-60 MPH the engine starts to make a sounds like rocks in the engine. What's happening. When I go about 40 it stops.
View 12 RepliesMy 2004 F-150 5.4 has a rattling noise coming from the passenger side of the engine when at operating temperature. The cam phasers and all related parts have been replaced. The reason I was prompted to change the phasers, chains, guides and tensioners was due to the engine stopping on me as I returned home from an errand. The engine had already shown signs of needing the phasers replaced.
The engine runs very smooth while warming up. Vehicle lacks power and has a rough idle after warm. Took the truck to a local mechanic, in the process of making a diagnosis, he performed a compression test. Cylinder 3 psi was much lower than the other 7 cylinders, the mechanic recommended replacing the engine (possible bent valve).
I have a Haynes manual, have searched youtube and checked this and similar forums, I have yet to find instructions on the removal of the head from the block.

In 2010 i purchased a 2005 Lexus GX470 w/ 52k miles. It had 2 previous owners and you could tell it had been garage keep and most likely not their weekday car because low miles and 3rd row was in mint condition. Up until late last year the car has been great. I use it to tow my boat and the only thing besides regular oil/filters and its 60k checkup was to replace the drive shaft for the TSB/clunk noise on stopping.
I am currently having two issues that have been becoming worse.
1st is the knocking or tapping noise in the engine compartment. Below is a link to the video. This was after driving for approx 15 minutes. It doesn't do it 10/10 times, but is probably happening 1/2 the time now when i drive it. Oil is 10W30 Full Synthetic by MobileOne and just replaced today to see if that changed anything. I purchased 2 replacement knock sensors a few weeks back but haven't had the time to break it down to swap them out. Figured since the belt needs to be done at 90k and my car is 10yrs old I might as well replace the timing belts at the same time. When the AC is on or car is in drive it doesn't knock strangely enough. In the video you can hear the AC click on/off and knock when its off. I'm hoping this isn't a bad engine or rod or something... Thoughts?
2nd is the steering vibration. I noticed there is a TSB on that for replacing the steering column and other parts and assume I should do thing soon as well. Depending on the payment or temperature it will do this at times around 60ish MPH. Again, its not consistent, but is very noticeably while driving when it is. Tires have approx 40% tread remaining and only the driver side tire seems slightly more worn on the inside than the outside.
We operate a garage, did an oil change on a 2007 F150 with a 5.4L, with 70,000 km. A few days later, began to make noise. Owner took it to the dealer, the dealer told him it needed an upper engine rebuild. A technician at the dealership said the oil filter came apart and caused the engine damage. Scored cam guides and cam shaft damage. Installed OEM recommended, Pennzoil 5w20, and Pennzoil PZ42, Purolator manufactured. No loss of oil, proper quantity of oil installed. Sent the filter to Purolator for testing, came back 100% within specifications, no missing parts, gaskets present intact. What would cause this damage?
View 11 RepliesAs I was driving home from vacation the other day while towing my boat I started noticing a tapping sound coming from the passenger side. Sounds like an exhaust leak or a lifter. Can't tell. Sounds louder under acceleration. It's a 2009 5.4 with 70k. Just had ford do oil change last week. Oil level is good.
View 11 RepliesHave a 2011 F150 with the 5.0. 91K miles. On startup-cold or warm-there is a ticking/tapping noise coming from the engine for about 3-5 seconds then it goes away. Happens on every single start. Sound like it's coming from driver side on top of engine, but hard to pin point.
View 3 RepliesF150 2007 5.4 tapping from idle to infinity driver side wheel wellI have read thought a ton of these post and my head is spinning I have used 10w30 from 10,000 to 100,000 with lucas then 20w50 with lucas current 150,000 miles changed oil every 5000 +/- a few It taps when I first crank up cold or hot, it taps at 0 degrees or 200 degrees, it tapps at 800 rpms or when im really mad at 5800 rpms and never stops it is really loud at the driver side wheel well its not the injectors, coils, plugs, exhaust i have been all over, under, and around the truck hot, cold, day, night, and even threatened to empty my .45 clip on it and it refuses to tell me what is going on and cannot found a resolution I could deal with it but pulling up to the drive through window and it echoing back at me has me ready to order a create motor.
View 6 RepliesI bought a used 2006 Toyota Camry Sportivo from a local Toyota dealership not too long ago. Unfortunately, when I bought the car I also bought a flexing/tapping noise coming from the sunroof with it. I believe the problem here lies in the fact that the back right hand corner of the sunroof appears to have a little more play as opposed to the other side which causes a flexing/tapping noise when driving the vehicle. Toyota had the car for nearly to weeks to fix the problem, however, when I picked up vehicle it appeared that they had only lubricated all the moving parts, but not fixed the problem. The sunroof is factory fitted, so I do not think it should be making that kind of noise.
