My 2007,4.6 is making a whinning noise from the front of the engine around the idler/tensioner/alternator. What I have read it might be a problem with the alternator getting cold, I forgot to mention it's cold up here. Fixed by changing the alternator and did the noise come back as it seems to be a design problem?

View 6 RepliesSo from reading around a lot, it seems like the chirping is from the belt tensioner or idler pulley. That said, I've not been able to find anything definitive. I tried to do the water bottle squirt test (from Gates' youtube video) and either I did it wrong or the chirp did not go away implying the issue is not the belt. While I was looking in, I could see the tensioner shaking some.
If my tensioner should not be moving, do I just need the pulley or the pulley and the mount?

Chirping gets worse as it heats up. Seems to happen independent of ambient temperature. Purchased a year ago so unsure of the history of part changes.
My 07 SCREW 5.4L 4x4 has 77,000 miles and has a high pitch whining noise on front right side of engine. Sounds worse in the cold,increases with RPMs.
View 5 RepliesOk I have a 2002 f250 7.3 4x4. The belt starting to shred and make a whiping sound at highway speed. So I replaced the idler, tensioner and belt. That was not the problem it still making noise so next I changed water pump. Still not it so I changed a/c clutch, bearing, and pulley. And It still not fixed. Right now the back of the belt is turning black on the wrighting like a pully is locking up. Also the front edge of the belt is starting to wear. I only have 255,000 miles on the truck and has been well maintained.

View 2 RepliesThis monday i found this horrible noise coming from the engine... My first thought was a pulley bearing, yet none of them at the front appeared to be the cause, and standing in front of the bay it sounded like it came from the engine itself (which would be really bad news). Well, i parked the truck until today and i went to check if i could find the cause. I used a mech's stethoscope at the engine and found nothing strange, turned the engine off and touched the pulleys to feel if any was getting hotter than the others... no dice...
Then took the belt off and tried every pulley by hand, all worked ok, yet when i turned the Alternator's it flashed a little spark every now and then (that was just a hint, i wasn't sure). To finally rule out the engine, i turned it on without the belt (that would leave all the pulleys out of the equation). It worked fine and made no strange noises. I cleaned several pulleys and placed the belt back, and turned the engine on once again, this time keeping my attention at the alternator, enough said, it made several spark noises and suddenly, i saw a cap flying of its back. It turned out to be the bearing at the back of the alternator, it was destroyed and losing shrapnel all over, take a look:
Now, need to know what is the part number of the measures of this bearing. (I'll take what's left of the bearing to the store, but i like to be sure of what I'm looking for).
I have a noise coming from the front of the engine. The noise stops once the the thermostat opens and the water pump starts circulating coolant.

View 6 RepliesI have a 2003 Santa Fe 2.4. Couple days ago my idler tensioner pulley or whatever its called seized up and took the belt out with it. I got a pulley that resembles it from Autozone mind you that it was the only parts store that had one in stock even Hyundai didnt have the part. The only difference is the hole size for the bolt is about 1/4 inch bigger then the stock pulley. Is there any chance I can get a spacer and make up for the difference?
View 6 RepliesMy Ex is missing the label showing the serpentine belt routing diagram. I pulled one off the Autozone website for V10 with AC. It showed that there are 2 idler pulleys (one on the left and right side of the alternator). It also has the tensioner pulley.
I only have a tensioner on the left side of the alternator. The one on the right is missing. There appears to be a threaded hole where a pulley should go. Since I bought this used, I thought the previous owner took it off.
I used the bolt from the old tensioner pulley I replaced for the hardware and put a new pulley on.
I also looked at other V10s on used car lots and none of them had the pulley to the right of the alternator. Should there be one there?
2002 Camry 4 cyl. Can the idler pulley alone be replaced on the serpentine belt tensioner? I noticed a very slight side to side play when I had the belt off. No noise from it. When I looked at rock auto, they sell the whole bracket with the pulley.
View 2 RepliesDoing some charity work on a '04 5.4. Noticed top right idler pulley was sitting on a 45* angle, figured it was shot and decided to replace it. The bolt broke. Borrowed an Easy Out. Short version, I have a very messed up bolt hole. Tried drilling and tapping but couldn't get it to bite and was scared to go bigger. I don't know if the threaded part pulley actually mounts can be replaced and if so how to go about it. Not sure how much deeper I can drill if it can't be replaced? At a standstill.
View 1 RepliesI have had this whining noise that I'm not sure what it is. It sounds like its comin from the alternator area. There are three symptoms that are confusing me though, 1st is I only hear this whine as the weather starts getting colder and the colder it is the louder it is. 2nd is it only happens around 1800rpms like when it's getting ready to shift to the next gear. I can get it to whine when I'm parked and bringing the rpms up. 3rd is after 10-15 minutes when the truck is warmed up - no more whine. The truck is used very little duing the summer and I had this whine all winter last year. Alternator appears to be working fine and I do plow a few driveways every storm. Money is tight so I don't want to replace the Alternator an find it wasn't the problem.
View 3 RepliesI've been noticing more and more lately that while my trucks in 1st or maybe 2nd gear, say, slowly coasting around a parking lot for example, there's a whining noise coming from either the rearend or the tranny (cant tell which). It gets louder and more high pitched as I move faster then disappears as soon as the truck shifts gears..
Is this something serious like my transmission on its way out? From what I gather a lot of people seem to have a similar thing going on.. From what I can remember my truck has done this since I bought it, but lately (and maybe its just me) I seem to notice it more like maybe its getting louder..
I have 2005 F150 XLT 5.4 litre engine and my battery light comes on after letting the truck run on idle or sometimes driving.
Last Saturday went out drove it heater on and radio on I smelled something coming from the heater kinda like burning wire smell didn't think anything of it no smoke from heater (indicating the core was bad) no lights on the cluster nothing; went into the bank let it run came back out my battery light on. Drove it home and while driving the light goes off.
Opened the hood and the smell was coming from the alternator. So I turned the truck off. Let it sit for an hour or so then I took my voltmeter to see if the battery was good. The battery was 12.4v with engine off. Checked my battery connection for corrosion or loose connections everything was tight there was some dust on the battery terminals so I brushed them off. I checked the battery cable that goes from positive to the alternator where it connects to the alternator with that nut it was good, clean and tight.
So I started the engine up and I can hear a whining noise from one of the pulleys. Let it idle for 2 minutes no battery light so I put my voltmeter on the battery it read 13.8v, so I turned on the A/C, head lights, radio and the heater tried again the voltage dropped down to 11.9v then the battery light came back on. Also through all this my battery gauge in the cluster always stays a half way mark doesn't drop or go high. Next with the engine turned off I took the belt off checked the pulleys the idler pulleys seem fine and the belt doesn't show any glazing but the alternator was hot almost like touching a hot exhaust manifold.
So for the last 3 days I have been trying to come up with how to resolve this issue obviously it could be the alternator going bad but the battery has never lost a charge yet I let the truck sit for these past 3 days and today I started the truck and it started right up I don't see any dimming lights except it has a whining noise and the battery light didn't come on immediately I let it run for 5-10 minutes before it came on; I even drove it around the block and the whining noise gets louder every time I step on the gas. To me it's either I need new alternator, tension pulley is bad or the idler pulleys are bad but they turn fine.
I just bought a truck, it has a whining noise while accelerating, stops while letting on the gas, does not do it in neutral even if i rev up the engine. Only whines while there is some force on it, ie.. accelerating, or going up a hill at any angle, and does it from about 10-15mph- atleast 60mph.
View 2 RepliesI'm new here to the F-150's forum although I've owned a few since 2001. I bought this F-150 '05 5.4L Lariat. Really nice truck. But when I purchased it, it had this weird noise inside the cabin. I thought because it had a camper on it that some tranny noise was coming up thru the camper and the rear cab. After taking camper off, the noise was still there. From everything I've read online, it could be rear pinion seal, differential bearing, tranny, front hubs, etc. I have left a video. Pay close attention to the little whine. Kinda hard to hear if your not listening for it.
Note- when i drive it is most definitely coming from the middle to rear of the truck. But I'm not ruling out anything. I have looked underneath the truck and the differential is dry and the driveshaft area near diff is dry. No leaks. I have not checked fluid in diff. Is there an easy way for these trucks? I have read and heard about adding an additive? The noise starts at about 10-15 mph all the way up to 80. I've never taken it past 80 but I'm sure it's still there.

I just bought a 2005 fx4 and there is a whining or whirring sound coming from the rear of the truck when I hit around 70km/h. the second i let go of the accelerator it stops.
Today when I got home after a 15 minute highway drive, i got under the truck and felt the differential area. it was warm but not hot. and there was a wet spot on it. i wiped off a drop of oil. there was also a wet spot on the bottom, seemed to be just water? I'm not sure.
Some family members borrowed my truck, and when they returned I have a loud whining noise coming from the rear axle, which I have determined is a 9.75 rear. I checked oil level and it was high enough, but has a slight leak from the pinion seal. Everything feels solid but I have nothing to compare it to.
Its on a 2005 Super Cab with the 5.4L 183,000 miles. The front pinion seal was replaced in Feb 2 years ago, by the dealer's mechanic, who may have been a shade tree mechanic.
I am a Youtube Certified Mechanic, as in, I watched about 10 videos of people working on their 9.75 differentials, and realize I don't have all of the tools to do the job, such as a press, or race drivers, or the special gauge.
How many of you have tackled this issue? What did you find? What am I looking at for cost? I am on a very small budget.
