Curious, how does the 4x4 engage in the new F-150's? When I put the truck in 4WD I can here the click sound coming from the front axle, where as it comes from the t-case on my Ranger. Just wondering how it's set-up.
View 5 RepliesThis has going on for a few months now off and on. Whenever drive my F hard I notice this metallic click when i go to shift hard into second. The metallic click seems to be coming from the front of the car. I also get it if I'm around 3600rpm in and stomp on the pedal in first or second. It also happens when I shift into reverse. What it could be??
It also happens when i floor it and let off and do not change gears mainly in first and second. Sometimes i get a double click also.
At first I thought something could have gotten trapped in the engine bay and it only accelerated to a high enough speed to cause an audible noise but seeing as it been 3 or 4 months I don't think its the problem. It does not seem to effect spend and it does not make the click all the time.
So I got this rattling sound like a piece of tin rattling underneath the truck, it is coming from the front of the transmission area. About 6 months ago the same thing was happening so I took the truck in for some other warranty work and had the dealership check out this rattle. When I picked the truck up I asked and they said it was rocks/gravel caught up underneath and they took them out and the rattle was gone. The truck is a 2010 FX4.
View 12 RepliesMy front axle is making a groaning like humming noise when the truck is cold and first starting to drive it. It does it when speeds are at 30 mph and under and goes away when putting it in 4WD. It sounds like the hubs but I'm not sure. The dealer hasn't been able to duplicate it because they haven't kept it overnight. I'm just wondering if this happen to the truck, was it fixed and what was the issue. Like I said, I think it may be a vacuum issue to the hubs, but not sure.
View 12 RepliesWife's 2010 F150 4x4 85000 KMs makes grinding / ratcheting noise in LH front axle when in 2 wheel drive. Mostly when turning left some times when traveling straight never when turning right. Never makes the noise when in four wheel drive. I am suspecting the auto hub is the issue but wonder if others have had this trouble ?

I fixed it and it worked for a while and now both my lights went out. Hi and low. Every time I turn my light on I hear a weird click noise coming from the fuse block. It sounds like a bad relay. What it is?

View 11 RepliesI have a 2004 F150, 5.4L V8. A few years back I was in an accident when someone slammed into the front of my truck. The right front wheel & tire took the brunt of the accident. I thought the repair shop had everything back to normal until recently I occasionally have a grinding sound coming from the right front side, seems to be related to the axle. It doesn't do it all the time just at random while I'm driving. The only solution I can find is to pull over or slow my speed to a crawl. Once I slow down enough or turn my wheel one way or the other its like something SLAMS back into place. I had it looked at by a local mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. Could it be something in my right front axle?
View 7 RepliesI have the dreaded click-click-click noise when turning that is indicative of my CV joint going tits up. Checking it out the boot is split and there is some grease. So, I plan on going ahead and changing both sides drive axles out, since the Camry has 178k on it (yeah, 178k on a 2009.)
View 14 RepliesI took my 2009 Santa Fe Limited to my dealer this morning to have them take a look at a click / pop sound that I was occasionally hearing from the front. They inspected everything and did not find any issue and could not replicate. No problem...they did not charge me for the inspection. Great.
So I'm driving home and while making a left turn, all of a sudden my Santa Fe stalls without any warning in the middle of the turn! No audible warning what so ever...just a dead pedal, stiff steering wheel and little braking power. The electrical seemed to be fully working, as my radio and instrument panel was working.
When I had drifted to a stop, I checked my instrument panel and I saw the following indicators:
Immobilizer warning light
Check engine malfunction indicator light
Low oil pressure warning light
Charging system warning light
So I immediately call back my dealership and they ask if I'm able to start the car back up and drive back to the dealership. I start the car back up without issue and drive back.
They bring the car into the bay and hook it up to run diagnostics. The results show no errors??? No codes were thrown??? I have a copy of the report. I don't understand how nothing was captured?
CM series 2009 Santa Fe? 108,000 kilometers. I'm really concerned that this happened without any warning and no digital record or log from the diagnostic. What if I did get into an accident because of this stall and had no way to prove that it was not my fault?.
When I'm turning left or right I'm hearing a click-clack from the front, what this may be?
View 2 RepliesI have 1999 F350 7.3 Crew Cab 4WD. I took it on a 4 hours trip towing a trailer to haul a small tractor on it. after 3 hours of driving, I started hearing grinding and metal chewing sound coming from the front axle or close the wheel hubs. It was awful, terrible, ... you name it!!! I had to continue or I will lose the tractor I paid for already. The sound was coming for 1-2 seconds each 500 feet or so. It never stopped or changed. I pulled over to see what's going on and found the following:
1. Left shock is leaking badly
2. Right locking hub is gone (not sure if the truck had one before). I bought this truck last year, but I never had to use 4x4 and I know the 4x4 motor by the transfer case is missing and the nipple on the transfer case is set to the 2wd position so the front drive-shaft does not turn.
I took the front shock off and continued to drive without it, the noise did not go away.
I pulled over again and this time I noticed that the dust cover on each end of the front axle is missing too. I have never worked on these axles before, but I jacked one side, and sure enough, gear oil was leaking from the other side. I took the plug off the front differential and stuck my finger in it. I felt a creamy brown-greenish stuff in the differential. The consistency is like mayonnaise or thin peanut butter. I put the plug back on and went to pick up the tractor because I did not want to miss it fooling around with the truck on the highway.
The truck made it there and back (almost 5 hours total after the break down). The sound never stopped every 500 to 1000 ft.
After getting home safely, I took the other locking hub off, and took it for a test drive. I did not hear the noise, but now my right brakes are locking.
I took of the wheels and saw that the retaining snap ring (C clip) for the front axle on the right side came off by hand. I took the washers behind it off. Took the calipers and brackets off. I have never done front axle rebuild. I am not sure what has been damaged and what's still good.
Right of the bat, I know, at least, I need 2 shocks, one brake caliper and pads.
My questions are:
1. Is it possible to take the front axles off on both sides and make it 2wd for now until I have the money to rebuild the axle?
2. Could I use the same hubs? or they are most likely damaged and how to tell?
3. How to tell if the differential is damaged/needs rebuilding?
4. How to tell if the axles/spindles are damaged?
5. Is there a step by step tutorial to rebuild the axle with all seals, bearings, ...etc? How hard is the job for a hobbyist? I do most of my repairs myself, and I was lucky at 36 years old, I never had to rebuild a differential.
6. What else I might have damaged in the process of driving it that long with the noise? How do I tell if I did?
I have a 2000 F-150 XLT Supercab 5.4 4x4 with the dash shifter. My front axle won't engage when shifting into 4x4. A few months ago the vacuum solenoids were replaced and they sound as though they are functioning properly. The diaphragm isn't moving the lever thing and i can't get the lever to move with a screwdriver either.
I know it has worked the past two weekends. Two weeks ago it was in a significant amount of mud and possibly submerged at times. I power washed everything pretty good immediately afterwords though and it has worked in between then and now. What could be going on?
Have a click when the clutch engages? Manual transmission.
Everytime is release the clutch, I hear the clutch click when it grabs. It's not the pedal that clicks. It's inside the transmission.
It runs fine, and it's been doing it right off the lot. It's not that loud to actually bother me, I'm just wondering if its normal.
I have a 2009 XLT 4x4 and it has a faint squeal sound coming from somewhere. I can only hear it with the window open driving between 20 to 50 Kph after that road noise is too loud. First thing in the morning it is not there seems you need to drive for 10 to 20 Km before it starts.
Turning right it gets louder left it seems to go away. Braking has no effect on the sound.
I have warmed it up in the morning and it still takes the same distance to squeal. Had it in the dealer and they changed out a front wheel bearing but that did not fix the problem. Had them service the brakes to rule that out too.
So yesterday afternoon I went outside and started my truck up. Upon starting it up and flipping the AC to high I noticed a clicking sound coming from somewhere inside my dashboard. It did not change in rhythm regardless of what setting the blower was on. But it remained for a couple of minutes before it subsided.
For the record it wasn't a subtle clicking...It was a very obvious sound. After the noise went away I continued to use the AC and it worked just fine like it always has. What it could have been? 2011 F-150
I have a 2013 XLT with a sirius enabled radio. my display works (time,date, shows bluetooth connected) but no sound is coming out of the system. What this could be? i tried replacing the cd player/motherboard but that did nothing... could it be a fuse?
View 6 RepliesMy 09 FX4 Screw has developed a strange thumping sound coming from the undercarriage within the last month or so. Very noticeable when turning on even terrain. It's just barely under warranty and I am planning on taking it to the dealer.
View 2 RepliesLast winter I had a moaning sound in my front end when slowing down to a stop when the temps were around the freezing mark. When it would happen, sometimes i would engage the 4WD and it would go away, and come right back when disengaging the 4WD. I took it to my dealer and Ford's procedure was to re-pack the front wheel bearings. When I got the truck back the weather warmed up and the moaning didn't come back. When this winter started and the cold weather came back, so did the moaning in the front end when slowing to a stop.
I took it back to my dealer again, and this time they checked what I suspected all along, the IWE's for the 4WD (the integrated wheel ends). the seals were cracked, letting moisture and rust formation inside of them. After the IWE replacement, the moaning noise went away. My research has found that this problem goes back to around 2004 on up. If has these symptoms with the 4WD truck in the cold weather, have your mechanic check out the Integrated Wheel Ends. By the way, my oldest son is the Ford tech that performed the repair on my truck, so it was in his best interest that my truck was fixed .
I have noticed recently that I have a "rubbing" noise and vibration coming from the right front wheel on my FX4. It is most noticeable from 5-10 MPH, and more pronounced when turning right. it is not constant. It sounds almost like a brake pad rubbing on a badly warped, wet rotor. It goes away when I apply the brakes. I am thinking bearing or possible CV joint.
The dealer can't get it in until Tuesday, and they say I will have to pay the deductible on the ESP, even if it is related to the steering vibration they could not replicate or fix about a month ago. I am seriously considering going to another dealer for my service. Given, they did absorb the deductible last time, but they didn't fix the problem!
