I have used a wooded stick to locate a ticking or knocking noise on my fuel rail. I can't hear anywhere else on the motor. I took it to a mechanic and he told me it was the timing chains and guides. Sometimes it is very loud and other times it barely noticeable. 191k miles so I am not going to spend $ rebuilding the front of the motor. Just want to be sure it is what he says before I scrap it out.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2000 F250 5.4 that has a ticking/knocking noise. After about 30-60 seconds of first starting the truck in the morning, the ticking/knocking noise appears. It sounds like its coming through the exhaust system and seems to be louder under the front passenger side wheel well. When I rev the engine up, it seems to go away. Does this engine have a cam phaser? Could it be timing chain slap?
View 11 RepliesWhen the engine of my 2007 Camry LE V6 is cold, it makes a ticking/knocking sound. The engine has 100,000 kms on it (60k miles). The frequency of the sound varies with the speed of the engine, not with the speed of the car.
When engine is cold: The sound happens roughly twice a second when the engine idles (at 700-800 rpm).
When engine is warm: The noise is less audible. It can be heard when idled at a stop, but you have to listen for it. The noise cannot be heard on the highway.
The car doesn't burn oil, and the oil level is ok. I had the oil changed 3000 kms ago, and it is still very clean (clear). The was the same before and after the oil change.
I am wondering if it could be the lifters, bad plug, or maybe a timing issue.
The wife's 08 Mountaineer has an exhaust tick when it's cold. Goes away after it warms up. EGR valve sticking or something? Is there an easy fix?
View 5 RepliesMountaineer started running rough couple of weeks ago with engine flashing. Had codes read, got codes P0306 and P0316. I changed the coil pack of cylinder 6, engine light went away but still running rough. Decided to change all plugs. Found cylinders 2 and 3 filled with oil so I changed the valve cover gasket. Put back together, still running rough and ticking. Pulled every coil pack and metered them.
Every one reads .6 ohms across terminals and 5.6k from each terminal to spring. I'm assuming this indicates a good coil pack. I also metered the one that I took out and it reads the same. I've also looked for vacuum line leaks and listened but found none. The engine is rocking pretty bad and the exhaust comes out in the pattern of the "misfiring". Went to see if Autozone could read a code without the engine light on but they read "no codes".
My 2006 Mountaineer 4.6 is ticking at start up, and it gets quieter after about 30 seconds. Does this sounds like the cam phaser?

View 5 RepliesI have a 1994 volvo 850 turbo wagon. While replacing the pcv breather system, I dropped a little metal clip that attaches the fuel line to the fuel rail with a t25 torx screw. I can't find the clip. What the part is called or where it can be found?

I have recently fixed the fuel leak.
When its hot or cold and not starting if i relieve the fuel pressure at the fuel rail, in most cases it will start immediately. However if fuel pressure relief does not work. I disconnect the vacuum line at the what looks to be the EGR valve or the pressure regulator at the front end of the rail, then usually starts right away.
I have not tested at this time to see if the fuel pump is failing nor have i tested fuel pressure. I am trying to narrow down the problem to one specific part. There is no problems with cranking. There is spark - coil, plug, dist cap have been replaced.
It seems the problem is with fuel delivery of sorts. It was mentioned that sometimes the heat from the engine could be heating the fuel rail to a point which turns the fuel into a gas not allowing it to atomize.
Yesterday morning taking off out of my driveway I heard a ticking sound. Kinda metal on metal sounding. It sounds like middle of truck underside. Only on acceleration. It does also clunk at times or ping when I put it in gear.is this u joints? Hopefully not rear end. Its a 2000 limited ex. with the v10.

I just got the truck and was fine went to instant oil change and changed the oil used 5w30 and there filter unknown brand? now I'm getting a ticking kinda like a lifter tick?? you can hear it at idle not when moving.. Would the thicker oil be causing this? or the cheap filter is so filter should I go to? Motorcraft? bk to factory oil?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2000 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV. 104,000 miles. Has always ran great. The last few days it has had a sputtering almost knocking sound that gets worse when put into gear or the ac turned on. I changed the oil and checked all fluids. Looks good. Only thing I had done was fill it up this past monday after a storm. My mother in law told me afterwards that the particular station always has complaints after rain and has leaks in their tanks. I'm assuming I may have gotten water into the system. Would this cause these problems? And is it ok to drive it out or should it be flushed. I've added a can of Iso Heat and am now down to 1/4 tank. I had planned on getting a little lower on fuel and filling up with Premium. I've never had a problem like this before so not really sure the best way to track the problem or fix it. Or it may be something else all together.

View 11 RepliesI have a 99 f350 super duty with a v10. I drove it Friday night, but it wouldn't start Saturday morning. It is turning over fine, just no start. I have no pressure at the fuel rail. The pump does its little key on run. I can hot wire the pump at the tank, and it pumps. It builds up pressure after the fuel filter. I found that out when I changed the fuel filter. Will the pressure regulator shut off the fuel to the rail?

Fuel delivery? any specialty mods to run the fuel lines? I see it's a #4 ORB fitting. Anyone ever use a "T" or a splitter off the fuel bowl to have a quad line set up?

I thought id tackle installing my new boss intake this morning and didn't think to clean everything up enough and after i removed the fuel rail some dirt and small stones one was about a quarter of in inch round fell into the injector hole. I no that all will be in the engine now and I feel awful about it.
View 14 RepliesMy parents have a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer, 100,845 miles. They change oil like a religion. It has under the hood ticking that increases and decreases with RPM. The ticking (tickity-tickity) sounds like when there is low oil. People have said,"You better put oil in there..."The oil is full. I can't tell if the sound is coming from inside the engine, or if something on the engine might be loose that is causing the ticking as the engine RPM changes. From what I can remember from auto shop in the 80's...it kind of sounds like valves/lifters.
Also, it has a strange road noise that I think is coming from the tires. It sounds and sort of feels like riding on knobby off road tires. I can put it in neutral and turn off the engine, and the noise remains and decreases as the speed does, so it is not from the engine.
I bought a 2005 Hyundai Accent about 5-6 months ago, GS 2 Dr model, 52,000kms (69,000 on her now), and lately she has been making a weird ticking sound form the engine when idle, if you give her some gas it slowly goes away as your RPMS increase. I had my father look at it, he said it seems fine, i also had a garage look at it and they also said its fine, but too me the engine sounds different then it did when i got it, maybe the cold from the winter could be doing this? when the engine is heated up it still makes the noise.
View 4 RepliesWe own a 2000 Toyota Tundra--90,000 miles--obviously not used hard. When we turn on the ignition, we hear a ticking sound--sounds like it might be coming from underneath car passenger side. The sound seems to disappear as we drive it. What it might be? Toyota service person told us it might be exhaust manifold and estimated maybe 2K to fix it.
View 1 RepliesIs this job worth doing as a preventative maintenance item? I replaced the rear fuel rail plug (aka banjo bolt) o-rings because they were very easy to get to with the up-pipes out. But the cylinder head plug in the rear is pretty high up and even with the up-pipes out, there isn't enough room to get a breaker in there that's long enough and has enough movement to loosen it. The front would be easier to get to, but both accessory brackets need to come off to get to them on both sides.
As far as I know, none of them leak but they're all 17 years old... BTW in case you haven't been following, I'm doing up-pipes, injectors, turbo, rebuilt HPOP & fuel bowl, boots & clamps, etc. so I'm trying to knock out any PM items while I have it apart.
