I purchased a 1964 9 inch from a Galaxie 500 to use in my 51 merc M1. The drums were seized onto the axle shaft and after trying everything, I was forced to break them up with a sledge to get them off. The axles turn freely and I have removed the 4 bolts that hold the shafts to the housing flanges. The axles should slide right out but the do not. Am I missing something? How do I pull them if they don't budge?

I need to replace the drivers side axle shaft as the bearing retainer is starting to slide off and I'm not willing to take a chance a new bearing and retainer will do it again. They are 31 spline axles and have the ball bearings not the tapered rollers.
What year trucks can I find a replacement axle shaft? Any other thing I should be aware of in finding a replacement?
its a 2000 limited 4x4, must have been in the snow a lot because it was from up north and is pretty rusty on the underside. my dad and i have tried everything to get these caps off but nothing will work. lots of pb blaster, hammering, even cutting the one of the four joints and trying to wedge something from the inside. If we cant get it could a shop do it? and how much might they charge?

View 14 RepliesI have a 2003 Ford F150, 4x4, and I recently installed torsion bar leveling keys, i did not notice before i put the keys on, but while parked level, wheels straight, my wheels stand awkward, the bottom sticks out while the top is kinda sucked in, when i took a closer look, my inner axle shaft boot on my passenger side is busted and slinging all the grease out, what is the solution?
View 8 RepliesCheck out the pics. 99 f250 4x4. I have a leak in my front axle shaft. It looks like it is coming out of the dust cap on the end of the front shaft. I am pretty sure it is differential fluid from the smell. Is there a seal before the dust cap? Is the shaft hollow with fluid in it? I thought it was just in the differential and if it leaks it is at the seals where the axle goes into the differential not at the otter end.

View 2 RepliesI have noticed a few drips coming from the rear axle input shaft where the drive shaft connects. It has only done it once and there is no residue on the trailer hitch so I know it didn't dump everything on the road. If change this seal, how difficult is it and do you have any information which might make it easier.
View 14 RepliesI took the front axle shafts out a couple months back and remember NOT seeing any differential fluid in the axle shaft housing. But then when I took the tire off tonight.. I noticed diff fluid leaking from from the axle shaft dust seal ?
1. I didn't think diff fluid flowed up near those front dust seals ?
2. That's a brand new dust seal so I'm guessing some debri must be in the connection causing the leak ?

View 14 RepliesI am a new 6.7 owner and had/ have a 7.3 As I have been getting to know the truck I have been under it and noticed that the front drive shaft and axle are locked in. My hubs are switched to auto but I know on my 2000 7.3 when my hubs are on auto my front axle and driveshaft are disengaged... I'm wondering if the new 4x4 system is different. I know that can save on MPG

View 14 RepliesI thought that my front wheel bearing was bad but I removed it and it seems fine. The issue that I'm having is a continous vibration (noise) in the left front that gets worse with speed.The half shaft makes a noise at the point where the half shaft meets the steering knuckle and when I turn the shaft at the outer splines, the grinding noise is present. My question is, is the entire half shaft supposed to turn, even the outer diameter of it that would enter the steering knuckle, or is the shaft supposed to turn inside of that outer diameter? I hope I was able to explain my problem clearly/
View 6 RepliesToday I took the bed off of my 99 ranger. I was sitting on the cab looking down at the rear axle noticed the drive shaft was not entering the rear diff perfectly straight. As I looked further into it, I noticed the distance between the rear spring on the passenger side tire, is noticeably different. To visualize it, the wheel, at the bumper side of the axle, has a shorter distance between it and the leafs than the cab side. Not massive, but a few inches, and it's noticeable now that I can stand over it. I'm beginning to be very annoyed by this truck and it's previous owners, whom I take it , scammed my brother quite well with a $5k tag for a truck with so much not right with it. It's about to become my yard art for awhile.
View 8 RepliesI have a E99 F350 7.3L 4x4 I know some or most of you have already probably replaced this part and or pulled a front axle shaft out. So here is my question...In the pictures provided you can see what I think everyone is calling a "Dust Seal" and as you can see it is bad and making a very terrible noise when i hit a bump...I was wondering what parts I would need to replace this seal? I tried looking it up and just get lost in all of the other things....I have found write-ups for the axle being removed while changing ball joints but none by it self to just replace this seal.

My 2013 Passat 2.5L auto transmission needs to have the right (passenger) CV Axle Shaft replaced. It has 76k miles and has developed a clicking noise when making sharpish left hand turns. I listen to the stereo a little louder these days, but in the back of my mind, I know it's got to be fixed.
I did a search on this forum, but didn't see any direct detailed info on DYI replacement. It seems pretty simple, but the previous Passat models used bolts for the axle-transmission connection. The B7 uses a splined shaft into the tranny with no bolts. Any tricks for removing it from the tranny or fitting back into the tranny?
I am replacing the ball joints on my 07 f250 4x4. got down to the removal of the shaft itself and it won't budge. What is the secret here. Have to go to work on monday, and the weather in Cleveland isn't going to be very good on Sunday.
View 10 RepliesI have a vehicle that I was hoping would make it to the end of the year or so with because of credit issues. I just within the past week or less, am experiencing delayed shifting into 1st gear from stop, and a hard shift into second, then gears 3-5 seem to be much smoother. I went to check to see if my transmission fluid was low, and it is very thin, watery and milky in color. I have 149,000 miles on it almost, and the fluid was never changed that I am aware of when I got it with 78,000+ miles.( I didn't know I needed to do it within the next 50,000 or so.) I've been told by regular mechanics at NTB tire that it was already too late (2 yrs ago) and just keep putting fluid in and should be ok.
Well now it's not, and my question is this, can I have the fluid changed at this point at all, is it possible that it could just seize up the transmission for good? I also don't know if I should continue to drive it or what.
I currently have the rear axle shafts off the truck. I took off, cleaned then put on the rear diff cover.
I live in an area that does nothing but form rust anywhere and everywhere in very little time.
I don't want rust forming in the rear diff gears - can I fill the rear diff up ? Or will it leak out of the rear shaft holes ? Can I fill it up halfway then ?
My wife has been complaining about a noise from her 2005 expo.
As she drove the truck today I have narrowed the noise down to the right side of the half shaft. From looking underneath and comparing what I was seeing and hearing, the track bar is not centered. Its more in on the driver side and out on the passenger side. I had her to stand on the running board and shake the truck.
I can definitely hear a kinda cluck? It sounds like the half shaft going to the tire but at the same time the bushing on the outer tire rod end. I can't determine what it is exactly.
when you rock the truck you can definitely hear it. Its not like violent loud but i'd like to get it taken care of. I looked for some grease points but I don't see none..
2nd question for the grease points that I do see how much do I grease it? how many strokes?
