How the auto gear shift works on a ford E350.Does it work by wires or does it have a steel column to change the gears.I have looked for pictures but with no luck. I have spent 2 hours looking.
View 4 Repliesi have a 94 vw passat vr6 that wont shift. when you start off in drive it takes a second for it to start to move. if you shift it manually from first on up it shifts okay but sometimes it slips in between 2nd and 3rd. the only time the car will shift is after driving it a few miles at about 65-70 it will shift itself into second gear and not come out you have to shut the car off and wait a few minutes to "reset" itself. after driving it on the highway it kicked itself into second gear, i pulled over and the fan was on and it looked as if there was some fluid on top of the transmission but cant recall if it had been there earlier. i checked the ATF and there was no shortage of fluid. could the fan be on due to the transmission over heating? what could be the cause of it not shifting?
View 2 RepliesWhy does the automatic transmission stay in 3rd gear and not shift into overdrive until it gets warmed up? It is so annoying. This is the only car that has ever done this. Even the camry I don't think does this. Especially the fact that the rpms stay above 1k rpm until the engine is warmed up.
View 7 RepliesI have a 1987 e350 conversion. Recently the vehicle has been acting up. Once warmed up, the transmission does not drop back into low/1st gear when stopped at a light, when we go to accelerate the vehicle has no power as it tries to accelerate in drive. I have to manually shift into first which the transmission immediately kicks down. When it comes to transmissions I like to have some knowledge before bringing to a shop.
View 2 RepliesI am just about committed to purchasing a 1997 Ford E350 extended cargo van with the 5.4. The transmission shifts through all the gears nice and firm (reverse also works). The only issue with the van is the column selector lever is very hard to move between the entire range of PRND21. It also does not "click" into the selected positions, you have to just line up the pointer to the desired gear selection.
Is this a complete deal breaker (internal transmission issue/replacement necessary) or, is it something relatively simple (such as a worn selector cable). The owner did admit the van has been sitting for sometime. It has 134,000 miles on it.
1999 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L Flex Fuel Truck .... When i put the vehicle into Drive, it takes about 15 secs to auto-shift into gear ... if I step on the gas at any point before the shifting has occured it will not shift into gear at lower rpm's and forcefully buck into gear at higher rpm's ...
This occurs at startup and/or any time the truck is idling (ie, ... at a stop light/sign) ...And, curiously enough, this does not occur in Reverse, which shifts beautifully. I'm planning on changing/replacing the trannie fluid and filter and checking the valve body gaskets for wear this next weekend ....
A friends son just bought a 94 powerstroke. auto trans. it will not shift out of first unless you let off throttle. but once in second it shifts fine, until you stop and go back to first. I am thinking bad or sticking second gear solenoid, but do not want to give bad info.
View 1 RepliesWhat is going on with my dad's car. This car is a 2000 Ford Taurus with about 160,000 miles. In the morning, when he starts the car and drives away, sometimes the speedometer will not work and the automatic transmission will not shift out of first gear. After a few miles, the transmission will suddenly upshift and the speedometer will jump from 0 to the current speed. The door locks will also lock at the same time (they normally lock upon reaching a set speed). However, the car can be "forced" to shift, start the speedometer, and lock the doors by accelerating to 5000 RPM. The problem appears to have something to do with the vehicle speed sensor, but I don't know what exactly is wrong with that system. The car also knows that something is up as the Check Engine light is on.
What might be wrong with the VSS that causes this problem?
Why can it be forced to shift at 5000 RPMs?
Replaced Troque Converter, Truck runs engine runs fine transmission won't shift out of 1st gear.

View 1 RepliesI own two of the most hated cars on this show, a Renault Alliance and a Peugeot 505 V6. On the 505, the transmission was shifting pretty roughly, it was knocking hard. I bought another 505 for spares that was shifting smoothly. So this summer, I decided to spend 4 weekends on hard labor and I swapped the ZF automatic transmission from the rough car to the good one. After all that job, I didn't notice any real difference. So I guess it was the torque converter that I left on the engine?
Anyway, I decided that it will stay like that because I will rather take a bullet than drop this tranny again. Now yesterday, it was -30?C outside, after 3 months of storage outside, just for fun, I tried to start it. It started right on! So I let it warm up for few minutes then went for a little ride. Big surprise, it shifts very smoothly now in cold weather... So what's wrong? Wrong type of oil? I filled up with the one suggested in the owners manual!

Everything was working perfectly. I stopped at McDonalds to get a bite to eat. When I left McDonalds, the car would not shift out of first gear. I have checked the transmission fluid and it appears to be good. I shifted from Park to low, and low back to park several times making sure there was no problem there. I noticed it also kicks hard when going into reverse, and it kicks hard when going into drive. When it is driven it will not shift out of first gear.

View 6 RepliesMy VSC and check engine light have come on. In addition now the auto trans will not shift past 4 gear with in auto or with me doing it manually. My local shop who has worked on this car before and is very good put the computer reader on it and got a P0500 for vehicle speed sensor "A". Today they put it on the real monitor and it reads a different code that says check engine code but does not reveal the code to read.
I really don't want to go to my dealer and get it hard. The car has 175,000 and until now has run great. I tried the gas cap fix to no avail. The shop did a reset when i first got there and it last 75 yards.
I have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, has 99,000 miles 3.5L. After changing the alternator (alternator did die and drained my battery, the shop recharged the battery) now it seems be stuck in 3rd gear and does not wont to shift (it is a automatic). Fluids are good, transmission was flushed between 50-60,000 miles.

View 2 RepliesHave an 02 Auto with the 2.7, 4wheel drive, and it doesn't shift into 5th gear. Can go through the 4 gears with the manual shift, but when just in drive, only shifts up to 4th. At 65mph, RPM's over 2500.
View 3 RepliesI have a 36 foot motor home on a 2000 Ford F53 chassis. (similar to single axle freight trucks and school busses) After getting one set of the rear wheels partially stuck, which resulted in some spinning of that side, the overdrive off light on the shift lever began to blink and the service engine soon light came on. The fault code said, "speed sensor showing more than one mile per hour". Now the automatic transmission sometimes will not shift into first gear after stopping and has to be manually downshifted, after which, it works fine.

I went through this transmission completely, its back in the van and I get no 1-2 shift.
when I first put it together, I missed the hole in the flex plate for the torque converter stud and started tightening the bell housing bolts down, I heard loud "POP" and realized what I had done. maybe I damaged the pump?
forward and reverse engagement is firm, both give a nice bump when it goes in gear. This tells me the forward clutch is working, but the intermediate clutch is not applying to make second gear happen.
I have done all the easy stuff I can think of, replaced the shift solenoid and put in a new 1-2 accumulator piston. I guess i need to air check the intermediate clutch piston again and make sure its applying. this a 2004 model trans, so it has the new style pump and intermediate piston.
