I've had the car about 3 months now. It runs fine, never overheats, but I keep having to add coolant (every 2 weeks or so), but I can't see a leak anywhere.
I searched and found one guy that said it could be a bad expansion tank cap, and another that said it could be a tiny leak that only leaks when driving.
Anyway, when replacing my axle, I noticed this:
If that's dried coolant, where would that be from?
I think its a flange that connects to hoses, they want to charge me 140 to repair. would this be something i can do myself?
View 5 RepliesI've never had a leak before in my anniversary and now all of a sudden I have a coolant leak. Once I start the car and run it for a short time and shut it off I lose a few ounces of coolant. I inspected under the hood and the coolant seems to be leaking onto my tranny. I am unsure where exactly it is coming from.
View 17 Replies2003 Jetta Gli seems to have a very small coolant leak. The leak is small enough that I don't even notice a puddle on the ground the light on the dash told me it was low. It is the Vr6 motor. Also I don't know if this is the right forum for my car the title says 2004.5 Gli mine's an 03. If this is a big deal just let me know and I'll delete this post and go else where.

View 4 RepliesFor the past few weeks, I've been struggling to find out why my windscreen keeps getting a light oily film after using the washer fluid (RAIN-X de-icer, which I've used for years). I replaced the wiper blades this past spring with an OEM/dealer set (worked perfectly), but recently noticed a streak from the right wiper that basically draws a vertical line right in front of my (driver's) line of sight. That is, when the right wiper comes all the way left before returning, it's that position of the blade that leaves an oily streak behind. Very annoying.
I first thought it was just road/winter dirt, but then went to a gas station, and touched the screen. It was oily. Further to that, it had an oily build-up on the blades (wiping them off with paper towel got all this black gunk off). I also noticed that the run-off on the lower part of the windscreen was oily too.
On top of that, the wiper arms had an oily film on them, which I'm wondering if it is a result of something from the wiper fluid, the resevoir, a pump issue, etc.
I do not see any leaks of the washer fluid on the ground. Is there some way that the washer fluid is getting contaminated with a light grade oil that is then being dispersed on my windscreen?? This is really weird, but is also very frustrating, especially when the weather in winter requires increased usage of the fluid.
I have an 01 supercab. 5.4 Triton 135k. I have begun to smell coolant the last couple of days. Have seen nothing leaking and truck doesn't run hot.
Will investigate more this weekend. Where to start looking for this. It has to be leaking somewhere. Windows don't fog and the smell is there all the time. I live in florida so don't use much heat.
Not the heater core. Heat works fine and no smell from the vents.
So over the past couple months when driving on the highway I would notice that sometimes my car would lose all power and slowly coast to a stop, but then the power comes back on and I'm off after a few seconds. It happened again today and I notice when I do hit the gas when it decides not to accelerate my boost gauge shows that there is vacuum building up in the engine. It just doesn't make sense to me. Would my car be getting thrown into a limp mode? Or is it something to do with fueling?

View 10 RepliesI have a 03 20th ae gti with about 84k just replaced the coil packs. driving on the freeway then power just goes away, press on gas and nothing. limp it off the freeway. Then it starts to die at idle and hardly turns over. car is pretty much stock. new clutch at 75k.
View 8 RepliesAbout three nights ago I had a complete power loss on the highway and the car began to bog down alot under throttle (and surge at points as well although with no boost). It also idled very rough/erratically. When I unplugged the MAF it cleared up right away; Idle was smooth and it ran without hiccup but in safe/limp mode so very tame (again, without boost really, gauge shows it stays in Vacuum and never passes "0" or goes into boost).
I scanned it this evening and got 2 misfire codes and a MAF code, along with a code related to traction control which I noticed had activated as a result of this and could not be turned on (by activated, I mean the light came on, disengaging T/C). These things make me think it is MAF related, especially because I have bolt down Hitachi coil packs so I do not think that is what it could be in relation to the misfire codes (which I think may be old and needed to be cleared).
Fast forward to last night: I can pretty confidently say my MAF is not the problem and I think I saved an unnecessary expenditure. I was able to meet a friend with a 337 as well and his MAF did not change my car at all and my MAF ran fine in his car so I think my problems are something else. Although with the MAF plugged in my car runs very poor and unplugged it clears up and just runs "limp" (no boost and slow but stable) from what I tested this evening the MAF unit seems to not be the issue.
I think there must be a vacuum leak of some sort between the MAF and the engine which allows more air in than the MAF signals when plugged in which causes the issue. Also, I know a common thing to think is "coilpacks" but I have bolt down Hitachi coil packs so I would imagine that would eliminate those from being the failure they tend to normally be. Agreed ??
Well I first had a slow leak, which was happening because I had a bad O-ring for my coolant temperature sensor. I replaced the O-ring, and I also replaced the whole coolant flange for good measure. After that I added some coolant, and started her up. And before i knew it, there was a pool of coolant under my car. It seems like the hose coming downward from the flange is swelling up (look at the pictures). But I have no clue what this hose is, or what it does.

View 2 RepliesSo I noticed one day when I was standing outside of my car right after I had turned it off that I could hear the coolant bubbling some. I had just recently flushed the coolant, put on a new water pump, thermostat, and put in a new reservoir with a new cap so I figured it was just some air in the system because there was air in the top radiator hose. So I just worked the air out and thought that was it. The next time I drove my car it did it again and there was no pressure release when I took off the cap either. I ended up getting the head worked on (valve job and check the head for warping). Even after all of this my reservoir doesn't seem to build pressure and every time there also seems to be air in the top radiator hose. After the car is warm I can work coolant back in the hose and 5 minutes later theres air back in it. I've pretty much replaced everything with the cooling system besides the hoses within the last year so I don't know what it could possibly be.
View 2 RepliesHad it done at 87K years ago. Coolant light came on car had been rattling. Parked and coolant came leaking out. At 157K now was gonna replace belt at 167k, that's 80k since the last job. My guy says had I drove it further would be looking at a new 1.8t.
Does this sound about right to you since it's been 70k since that last timing water pump job. Why didn't the car overheat? Chipped at 40k with apr and very conservative driver. I suppose it just depends on too many variables why the job needs to be done 10k before I originally planned to do it.
I have a 20th 1.8t. It was running fine last week but all of the sudden i was only getting about 4-5 psi. I have check all over vwvortex for somewhat of an answer. I have no C.E.L.. I have checked for vacuum leaks with nothing coming up. I tried to check for boost leaks but it comes out of the dipstick hole. I have undone and re-installed the pancake pipe. The DV is holding pressure.
View 1 RepliesI just got a 337 a couple weeks ago and I noticed today that there is oil underneath the body of the car and around the turbo housing. The car runs fine, idles fine and seems to boost just fine and every time I check the oil level with the dipstick it reads the same every time and it doesn't leave oil behind whenever I park. I'm extremely confused and a bit worried.
View 12 RepliesI replaced my timing belt, tensioner and water pump last weekend because I noticed I was leaking coolant from the water pump. The other day I popped my hood after driving and notice the reservoir bubbling a little bit because it sounded like the coolant was boiling and the line coming into the top of the reservoir felt hotter than normal. I opened the cap slowly and never heard any pressure release. I figured it was air in the line somewhere so I tried to work the air out. It sounded like the air came out and I took it for a drive and I finally heard pressure release after 3 different attempts. I opened the cap later when it was cool and noticed that the coolant was still at the original level.
Then the next day I was driving and came to a stop and noticed white smoke coming out when I gave it gas. It still drove fine though. I pulled over and opened the cap slowly but didn't hear any pressure release. I put in a little bit of radiator sealant and it seemed to do the trick.
The car has never overheated and there's no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. The heat also seems to be working correctly and my fans come.
This is my second vw I've owned and now I own a 20th ae gti. Just the other day I got out of my car and smelled antifreeze. So I popped the hood and realized there was no coolant in the reservoir.. So I went to my dealership, put some in... well that obviously isn't my problem, because the next day it was gone. Again. This is on sunday so I can't do anything about it. I made an appt to drop it off tonight @ my volkswagen dealer. It's not leaking, not smoking or burning, and the temp gauge isn't moving at all.
View 20 RepliesRecently its been pretty cold here, and in the morning or when it sits for awhile i start her up and about 10secs after i start her the little "stop" light comes on and says "check coolant". so went through all that, checked the service manual and dont see any red flags. and if i were to turn it off and then turn it back on it wont show again... but still curious.
