I have had my 20th for about a month now and I feel like first gear is so slow. I usually shift around 3,000 rpms. I was wondering if 1st if just slow in these cars or if there's something wrong?
View 1 RepliesI go out of town for work for a week and come back and my 1999 F250 V10 GAS, is acting up. It started when i tried to drive it and it didn't want to shift, it would rev up to 3000+ RPMs and finally shift really hard into gear along with the speed odo not keeping up and bouncing around not wanting to work. I also had my entire gauge cluster lit up with no key and door closed. all the lights were on and it was "dinging" like the door was open and it wasn't. you would hear it when you put your ear up to the door.
So my first thought was to change the VSS (which I did) no luck. So I started wiggling wire loops under the fuse box in the cab and the "dinging" quit.. i took it for a drive and it works like nothing ever happened. Obviously I am guessing there's a short so i brought it to my mechanic and hes saying he couldn't find anything by the fuse box but he thinks its closer or even attached to the gauge cluster itself. could this be true? Why would the gauge cluster loop throw off the shift points?
Yesterday I went to shift from 2nd to 3rd real easy going like 25mph and i couldn't shift out of second. I could wiggle the shifter up and down but barely side to side. Even when moving it up and down it didn't feel like it was engaged in any gear although it was apparent I was stuck in second. Clutch feels normal and still grabs well.
So after driving only in second all the way to my uncles shop I sit at school waiting to see where i can pour more money into the GTI. Its a 20th ae totally stock tranny, I don't know a whole lot about transmissions but possibly the linkage got messed up? I didnt hit any big bumps or anything before it happened.
I had my shift fork and 1 and 2 gear synchros replaced. Whenever i shift into second it doesnt feel as smooth as first. when i hold the clutch longer and put it into second it feels smoother.
View 2 RepliesSo the other day was driving my car... And he said reverse quit working. I'm nowhere near my car right now, but it sounds like the same thing that it had done for me a few times. Basically, the gear shift won't go into the slot for reverse, and even first is hard to get into sometimes. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... My car's a 337 with an O2M transmission.
View 3 RepliesSometimes (most of the time), when I shift from first to second, its either hard to do or it "pops" into gear. There's not like a grinding gear but it sounds like it is hitting something as it goes into gear. If I go 1st to 2nd while stopped, it goes in nice and smooth. It sort of feels like how you can't shift into 1st while you are moving slowly, you have to push on it a bit and then it finally pops in.
View 8 RepliesI've never had this happen before or never heard it. but yesterday for the first time as I was driving I could hear a really tin canny sounding rattle. I'm not sure if it was from the wheel well area or under the steering wheel in the dash. I only noticed it when I was at lower RPMs in second gear. (And its not the typical MKIV rattle sounds)...
View 2 RepliesIt all started after it being cold outside it's hard to shift into second gear when i first start up the car, and then after a couple shifts like that i get a notchy shift. after a while of driving it all disappears.
View 3 RepliesMy 20th Ann. GTI randomly would not go into first or second (they move into place but are just limp there and not catching into the gear) I was told for replacement of new 6-speed transmission and they did not offer any alternatives beside replacing it completely.
I know there is a thread talking about this but I read about the shift fork, or a piece of the shift fork that breaks and this problem fits my exact description. Not much info on what I can do, or at least not specified. What is any cost effective way to get my gears back without completely replacing the transmission? Is there anything I can do to just replace a broken part or are there any alternatives?
Here is what happened: I was accelerating one colder morning while driving to work when the power just dropped. Then engine continued to run, but I had no power or acceleration over 3000 rpm. Since that time, that is how the car drives. It starts, runs, etc... but has no power (like rev limiter or something) over 3000 rpm. The turbo spools up fine. I do know my 02 sensors are old. The engine has 184k on it... not bad. Is this a head gasket situation?

It seems that SOMETIMES while just digging thru the gears 1-2-3, not hard, when I get to 3000 rpms it's like I'm taking my foot off the gas. Rpm drops from 3000 to 2500. It's like I'm losing boost or something. I have no mods and obviously, no boost gauge.
View 7 RepliesI had my Honda Odyssey transmission replaced 2 years ago. The past few months, in the first mile that I drive the car on streets in our neighborhood, the car goes into high RPMs (about 3000) before it seems to drop into gear. It does this 2 or 3 times then works fine after that. The "Check engine" light is now on all the time. Sometimes, the car does one other weird thing--the high RPMs end with the drive/D4 light flashing on and off like a blinker (even if I change gears to D3. When this happens, if I turn the ignition off it comes back on and seems to function fine. I have had it back to the shop that did the work about 4-5 times to get it right. I like the guys but each time they return it to me, the problem remains. I took a 2000 mile trip with it and with the exception of this persistent problem, the van worked fine.
View 2 RepliesSo my 20th AE has been wrecked. But here is the issue, the car will idle for a about 30 seconds to a minute but surge from 1500 rpms to around 750. But after that, it won't idle. If I let it sit for a couple of days, then it will idle for a little bit then die again.
View 2 RepliesSo about a week ago i got on the onramp to get on the freeway and stepped on the throttle as usual to get up to speed, but now for some odd reason the rpm's dont go past 5,500. Not sure whats wrong. I stay on the throttle but it pretty much stops and levels out at right around 5,500.. i must say i am pretty clueless. i just past 80k not long ago, and everything seemed to be going fine.
View 3 RepliesI bought my gti about a month ago and every time I warm it up in the morning or any time it has been sitting over a long period of time the rpms sit at about 1300 until about a minute and it goes under 1k ... I am not to familiar with this issue.
View 14 RepliesSo I had the cv joints and boots replaced last year. When I turn at low speeds I get a clicking and some road noise, when I turn at higher speeds I get a lot of road noise. I feel like its a combination of strut mounts and wheel bearings?

When I press the asr switch the light comes up which i think its telling me that works. But its supposed to work when you go high rpm's right ? just wanna know since i am a totally newby in the 1.8t engine ...
View 11 RepliesSo driving home from the gym and all of a sudden my car dies. I pull over and the EPC light is on, restart the car, all is well. However it feels like there's a rev limiter or something, zero power after 3000ish rpms. Same drive home, car dies again. Same issue EPC light..

1.8t.. When the car is in neutral or the clutch is pushed in if i rev the engine to 2000 rpm's then it sticks and VERY slowly goes down. anything past 2000 RPMs it doesn't stick tho and goes right down? What could be causing this? I have already cleaned my throttle body out and it did nothing.
