I had a friend check out a noise coming from my engine, and he said he thought it was an "idle pulley", and another friend say it sounds like my injectors. Its kind of a tinny sound and it gets louder as my RPM's go up. I dont know where to begin for diagnosis, but I heard it on a different Jetta about a week ago.
View 4 RepliesI was driving yesterday going up a hill in lower gear... i think 3rd... and had the RPM's up sort of high, I heard a noise that sounded like if you stuck a stick into a fan...smoke also came out of the exhaust when pressing the gas.. smoke has come out before but I got my oil changed figured it might have just been burning off some oil.... I was thinking the catalytic converter??
View 2 RepliesWhen I drive my car past about 3000 rpms then let them fall i hear an odd sort of vibrating noise coming from the turbo between where ever I rev it up to and about 2600 rpms. Is this normal? Its fairly quiet and can only be heard without the radio on and if your listening for it. This worries me because I've only had this k03 for about 5000 miles .Some background info I am chipped with uni at 20psi, full 3" turbo back and an 007 dv.
View 3 RepliesSo I get in my car, start it up. as i drive away i notice a whining noise, as the revs get higher the noise gets louder. so i push the clutch in and rev it. Got that same whining noise, gets louder as the rev goes higher etc... so i turn the car off come back a little while later and its still making that noise. It doesn't really sound like a belt noise,
It was the power steering fluid, thought it was low. I haven't checked that yet...
Have a noise coming from their engine bay that kind of sounds like a bird chirping, but when you depress the clutch, it stops?

When I press the asr switch the light comes up which i think its telling me that works. But its supposed to work when you go high rpm's right ? just wanna know since i am a totally newby in the 1.8t engine ...
View 11 RepliesI just picked up a 20th about a month ago. It has 50k on it and recently I've noticed a faint whining coming from under the hood, most noticeable under idle and it changes pitch when I turn the wheel. I check the P/S fluid and it was low so I topped it off and I believe it has improved a bit but not too sure because I haven't gotten a chance to drive it yet. The steering does feel a little heavy but I figured that's normal because, well it's not a cadillac.

View 5 RepliesI am hearing a rumbling noise when I hit 4000 rpms on all gears worst in 2nd and 3rd.... I just recently replaced the timing belt, TBA Done, valve cover gasket, and passenger side axle (through raxles). Anyways I started hearing noise after those repairs, my mechanic has gone through all the work recently done and cant find the problem..... We replaced the tranny mount thinking it was that, but no luck.... I have not lost boost, and noise starts 4000k and goes away at 4700k No codes are flashing.
View 5 RepliesCar was started for the first time after the radiator was flushed and new coolant was put on it. The car was just jumped and charged after was brought from a copart auction. Now my brother said that everything looks smooth, no xxxmas tree in the dashboard, idle is steady, engine sounds good.
Now here comes the thing, the temps of oil and water are at a proper level. When he steps on the gas pedal a few seconds later there is some sort of smoke coming out from the back of the engine (exhaust manifold, turbo, intercooler stock pipes from the SMIC) My question is cause he's not a mechanic and he will arrive tomorrow. crack manifold, shot turbo or some leak in the hoses?
aBtw the car has 105k miles.
So there's been a noise coming from what seems like the transmission for some time now.Here is how it began...One day I was reversing and noticed this clatter/grinding/vibrating noise coming from underneath my car. It only happened in reverse.However, now it's happening in all gears but not when accelerating, ONLY on deceleration in gear.
There's no clutch slipping, no noticeable loss in power, etc. Just the noise.I don't want to start replacing things left and right hoping it will fix it so throw-out bearing, trans mount, flywheel, etc?

I recently had a turbo installed, everything went well, car runs very smooth considering having just upgraded the turbo. However, I keep noticing a strong smell coming from the engine bay. Kind of like a gas like smell or some chemical. At first I thought it was the loctite we used to put the gaskets in place burning off or the coating of the turbo but it has been a week and it still smells. I do not have a check engine light, my vacuum is right on the money, I am boosting fine, and my temperature gauge hasnt moved. What could this be? exhaust leak maybe?

View 4 RepliesSo I really don't drive my car much during the year since I'm away at college. Once I got back home a couple weeks ago and drove my 20th, i heard a rattle coming from the middle of the car. Jacked it up and starting banging around. The sound is coming from my resonator. Its either the clamp that is busted or the resonator itself. I have to get in closer to see which it is. But I do have a few questions. If I just cut the resonator cut off and weld a straight pipe to that will it be much louder. I have a stock 20th and I'm not really looking for a loud exhaust at the moment. Is it much louder without the resonator? I know if you put a straight pipe in place of the muffler it is MUCH louder so I'm just curious.

My concern is here: I checked it out the other day, and while it was running I heard a soft whirring sound coming from the engine. So I popped the hood and I couldn't really put my finger on what it could've been. I liked the car aside from that, and would like to get it, but I don't want a car with problems.
I've just recently starting getting a really annoying vibration coming from under the hood, only occurs while engine is running >~3000rpm's. Sounds like a metal plate shaking somewhere, any clues on where to check??
View 7 RepliesVery weird indeed...our 20th AE sometimes will give off this very light horn noise that appears to be coming from the passenger rear tire area...I looked around and couldn't find anything..
The noise is very faint, and repeats in a beep, beep, beep and the longer it goes on, the more space between beeps....very weird.
My 337 didn't pass inspection (control arms, inner tie rod, no cat because the guy I bought it from sucked etc) but it sat for probably 3 weeks and I just sold my other car (I was planning on using that $2000 to get the 337 to pass inspection) but I just drove the VW down the street for the first time and it's making some scary sounds.
Basically when I give it throttle there's a high pitched whirring sound and something keeps rattling that sounds like its coming from the engine bay. I'm really freaked out, I'm leaving in two months because I'm transferring to a new college and I need this thing to run perfectly.
It's also shifting a little strangely and if you don't shift absolutely perfectly then it starts to rattle (not like you're about to stall but something completely different) I can't take it to a VW dealer or anything because I'm way over the 15 days past a failed inspection and I can't afford a tow.
So your clutch pedal operates properly, the clutch engages with no issues, but this annoying squeak, snap, crackle, and pop noise keeps coming from the clutch pedal within the cabin.
Could it be your clutch master cylinder? CMC is not leaking in the engine bay and the driver footwell. Not the CMC.
Could it be your clutch switch that's used to control revs and cruise control? Removed it and clutch pedal still made noises when pressing and releasing the pedal. Not the CS.
Could it be the over-center spring that sits behind the clutch pedal assembly? How could it be? It's just a spring. Springs that compress in that orientation don't make snap, crackle, and pop noises.
What most people fail to realize is the noise is coming from the pedal assembly, but it's not the pedal structure or the pedal. It's the pivot point where it mates with the clutch pedal mounting bracket. At the pivot point are two bushings (one on each side of the pedal structure) that wears out over time creating these noises.
Please look up the part number for these bushings. They look like the following at this link but these are aftermarket upgrades for BMW's.[URL] ....
So, it's been 8 years with this awesome car. Still enjoying every day. Over the past year or so, I've noticed my engine get gradually louder and louder. By that I mean, the overall engine noise at low RPM. It's a mechanical kind of noise. Clicking, etc. The engine has 101,500 miles on it.
For the past 2 days now, this noise has gotten dramatically louder. I've tried to capture it in the video below. Might have to listen with headphones. The noise is most noticeable at idle and then goes away after about 2000 RPM. You'll see. What this might be? Btw, there is no reduction in the performance of the car.
