I drive a 2010 Golf Wagon/JSW, and when I'm going at speeds around +60 mph/90 kmph and lift off the accelerator a faint high pitched whirling noise comes on. As soon as I tap the gas pedal it goes away. What this could be?
It's been a week now since I've noticed this, I guess I've never noticed it before or it's getting louder..i don't know?
I have a 2007 Camry with 90k miles. All of a sudden today when I turned my car on I noticed a high pitched whirling noise, similar to a tornado siren that gets louder as I accelerated in my parking garage. Even when I turned the car off and on and it sat in park I still noticed it and it got louder as I press on the accelerator. I haven't driven over 20 mph since I noticed this so I'm not sure if it still does it at fast speeds.
View 1 RepliesSo I've started hearing a faint high-pitched noise when I apply my brakes. It's not EVERY time I apply the brakes, and it's not nearly as loud and annoying as the noise I hear other vehicles make when they need their brakes checked, but it's noticeable.
Also: There's a (possibly related) scratching/rattling noise that just started. I can only hear it with the windows down and it's not very loud. But it happens intermittently when the vehicle is moving or when it's braking, and it makes an almost sputtering sound when I slow to a stop. It will abruptly go silent before I'm fully stopped. Sometimes it cuts in and out, similar to when you've got a short in a speaker wire and the sound cuts in and out.
I'll be getting this checked out. Is this a "drop everything and go to the mechanic" issue, do you think, or more of a "get it looked at when you can"? I should note I haven't had any problems with the car actually braking (yet). It seems to function fine other than the new noises.
How is the turbo in this new design cooled? Sometimes when I restart a hot engine, there is a high pitched whirling sound before I take off. Is this the turbo in action? Are there active shutters in this car? Twin Power Turbo 2011 BMW 535i....
View 6 RepliesI have been driving my new ES 300h for a few days and have noticed that often when I apply the brakes, there is a faint high pitched noise in the cabin. It's not a brake noise of any sort, its clearly some electronic component. I was just wondering if this is a normal part of the regenerative braking system or not, as it is definitely quite audible and takes away from the otherwise very quiet ride of the vehicle.

I've ruled out breaks and tires, which weer my initial thoughts, and I think it's something with a belt or the engine now. I have manual shift 2002 Hyundai Elantra.. The car still performs fine, but I have noticed a slight decrease in acceleration speed..
View 4 RepliesI am slowly coming up on my 3 year anniversary with my Santa Fe 2007 3.3 AWD transmission , and after 50,000 trouble free miles I've encountered a problem.
It started this summer when I was towing my trailer on about a 300 mile journey. It sounded like a high pitched humming or whirling from the dashboard, while decelerating. It would stop at around 15 MPH. You cannot hear it while cruising. After days of head scratching I determined that the noise is coming from the transmission. It comes from the output side, as it shifts through all the gears smoothly, however it makes the sound with the engine off while coasting with the transmission in neutral too.
I noticed the transmission fluid was slightly burnt. As I am student, the problem was solved by turning up the radio, and as the car shifts great no thought was given.
During Christmas break I drove the car out to the west coast and about 400 miles into the journey the whining really got loud and frankly freaked me out. The car now sounds like little aircraft jet engines whinding down when you decelerate. OK its not as loud but when you're 400 miles into a 1600 mile trip you tend to get panicky about such things.
The car made it back fine. It still shifts great except for the whiney turbine noises that disappear below 15mph. I've got transmission fluid so I will start today by doing a couple drain and fills, but I suspect that since I've been a bit too lackadaisical about the problem that will not be sufficient.
About a month ago, I purchased my 2013 Prius Four. I've put on about 2,500 miles so far and recently started noticing when I start the car up, it is giving off a high pitched squeaking noise. This happens both when the car is using the electric battery and when I can feel the gas engine kick in. After about a minute or two, the noise goes away and doesn't come back.
View 5 RepliesI have had my certified 2010 Prius II, not two because it is a 2010 and 2010 used uppercase roman numerals for model designation, with 82000 miles about 3 months and sometimes when I apply the brakes I hear a high pitched whirring noise. I think the closest thing to compare it to would be a skill saw but not that loud.

Anyhow, the R is making a horrendous high pitched noise while coasting to a stop. This starts at just under 30 mph and is most pronounced in neutral. Accelerating in gear stops it. It is loud inside and louder outside and there is some rough "clanking" associated with it. My guess is a belt or bearing. It is coming from the front passenger side.
It's been pretty cold here and haven't started my R in 2 days at the most. I turned it over this morning and got this high pitched noise, like maybe a belt slipping or a bad bearing? The CEL flashed a few times then went away.
I couldn't stick around to check codes or inspect the bay, but what it might be?
I'm having a strange, very high-pitched, noise that seems to be coming from my turbo or (possibly) somewhere else in the engine bay. It sounds very screechy, and it may be paranoia, but I believe it also may have a slight metallic sound to it.
It all started yesterday after changing the thermostat housing for the third time in 2 days (autozone sold me a faulty, warped, housing that leaked after install). During this repair the engine never overheated (it did however leak fluid and go a little low) and the main point for replacement was a stuck thermostat. After finally getting it fixed I took it for a test drive and noticed the horrid noise after hitting a good amount of boost (no gauge installed). The noise occurs when boosting and doesn't happen when spooling in the 3k-4k range. I had no hint of the noise before this.
There doesn't seem to be any drop in performance and it still pulls hard. Hoping this to be a loose exhaust connection or boost leak. May be spooling sound escaping.

I bought a CPO 2010 Camry LE (2.5 4 cyl, 6 sp auto) a few months ago. The car had around 34K miles when I got it, and ever since then, it has had a high pitched whining noise when accelerating or revving the engine in park. It is noticeable from around 2500RPM up, and seems to be a little louder when the engine is cold.
I have left it at the dealer twice, and both times they have come back and said it is normal. I can't believe this, because I have owned many cars over the years, most of them being fairly dilapidated, yet most of them haven't had a noise like this. I think I have read a comment online somewhere that an issue like this was found due to a bad power steering pump .
I have a 2010 Corolla S Got it brand new in november of 2009. Its been 5 years since I had it and never had this problem.
So this has been happening for a month now, and I can't figure out what it is? It only sounds at first startup of the day when the engine is cold and only sounds off for 1 second right when you start the car.
Whilst driving on the motorway at the weekend I noticed a very load high pitched noise which seemed to be coming from the rear/centre underside of the car. It lasted for about 30 seconds and then went. It has happened before about two months ago and after the first instance I had the haldex and rear diff oil changed. On both occasions it has been very wet on roads with torrentian rain.

View 5 RepliesI have a 2012 golf R with about 25500 miles. I'm getting this high pitch noise coming from the front of the car. I can only hear it with the windows down. It is intermittent, sometimes doesn't show up sometimes there. Gets louder when I turn right. What am I looking at? Wheel bearing? I'm on coilovers.

I have a 2002 jetta 1.8t with unitronic stage 2 ECU and following mods:
ssqv BOV with recirc fitting (so acts like a DV)
3 inch open downpipe
Water/Meth injacetion (-35c washer fluid)
Short ram intake+heat sheild.
Spring loaded wastegate.
So for a while now I could hear a very quiet high pitched sound along with a whoosh sound from the intake at low rpm when the car is cold, after 5-10 minutes of driving the sound changes to where i just hear the wooosh from the intake, no high pitched.
I went out, let my car park for about an hour or 2 in 0c temp. went to drive it,everything is fine, the car just hit 90c. so i floored it, but traction control was on and i have winter tires, so it barley got to 4k rpm. CEL started flashing, no throttle control, really annoying high pitched sound from engine bay with lightest touch of throttle. the trubo was boosting to 22 psi and holding up to 16 PSI at redline before this happened.
The car would struggle to stay at idle, massive vibrations. but after reeving to 2k+ rpm no issue staying at that rpm, no blue/black smoke from exhaust. i scanned it and only got misfire codes and this strange code : "17925 - power supply relay for ecu (J271 or J363): electrical malfunction"
I had to clear the codes 3-4 times and restart the car 3 times for the power supply relay code to go away. but all the misfires, the high pitched sound stayed. it would misfire while driving, then stop, and then again.
I also logged with VCDS, and flooring it from 2k rpm to 2.6k rpm resulted in 0 extra boost over idle (idle boost was 980mbar).
Is my turbo blown 100% because of that sound, or could it be something else causing the "dentist drill" sound? And what about the power relay issue for ECU, could this cause any of the symptoms?
I have noticed the last 3 times I hit the brakes really hard above 100 mph ( even 120 mph) I hear a whirling noise coming from either the front brakes or tires. Kind of sounds like when you have really old summer tires on the car and you make a stop on the street . I have heard this on the track the last 2 track days I had. I know my front tires (Michelin PSS) are about 40% worn but are still in pretty good shape.
My rotors are the same that carried me through 6 track days in 10 months and was recently told by the dealership that my front pads need to be replaced sooner than later ( they were installed 10 months ago before all the track work ) and I am assuming the rotors are beat up pretty goo . I will be getting new tires in the next few months and will most likely be replacing pads and rotors at the next scheduled service. The car has 34k on it. Is this normal with Brembos or aggressive brakes?
