I was under the understanding that the headlights turn with the steering wheel. When I start the car they go through some kind of test thing but after that nothing. I am expecting them to turn when I turn the wheel or am I wrong?
View 5 RepliesI got my front two tires changed to Hankook ventus Evo v12 and i went up a size from 225/40 18 to 235/40 18.
For about 300 miles everything was normal but the last 250 miles wasnt. Every time I rotate my steering wheel, left or right, theres a loud clanking noise (after half a turn of the steering wheel). Metal on metal sound.
I dont feel like this is a result of the tire changes but it might be.
I've got about 27k on my GTI, and have just noticed some faint, but odd steering / power assist issues.
Relevant mods - koni coils. Have had these for about 15k, recently raised for winter travel, then lowered back to 24.25 ftg. Conti DWS with about 3k on them.
Anyway, other day (while in brief winter height) at parking lot speed, slight turn, I noticed a very faint pulsing through steering wheel. Was not there minutes later.
Lowered car back, drove for a few days, nothing unusual.
Drove from SF > LA yesterday and had an odd feeling at speed on freeway. It was like a bit of resistance turning the wheel off center. Almost like there is a center detent, which i have never noticed before. Once off center, all feels normal. It was super windy out and thought that was causing this, but continued throughout drive.
I don't think that this is the tires, it's more mechanical than that.
its possible to repair? or only a new one it's the solution? cause my gti 1.8t it's making a sound like tssshhh when i turn the steering wheel. I change the power steering rack.

View 8 RepliesI'm getting this weird sound when i turn on my car and turn the steering wheel left and right not even a full lock just left and right really quickly or slow there is this annoying clunking coming form both of the front wheels atleast thats what i think it is and it feels as something is loose but i checked most of the bolts.. Recently i changed my front wheel bearings inner cv and outer cv joints on both front wheels.. i changed my ball joints and tie rods everything was change within a 4-5months..
Also the other day as i was driving and i could only hear this 20mph and up this weird clunking and vibration in the floor.. no vibration in the steering wheel just the floor and clunking sound.. i know for a fact i need an alignment and possibly new tires.. but what would the clunking be coming form when driving or just parked in place while moving the steering wheel...
Ok a week ago i noticed a popping noise when i would turn my steering wheel while the car was parked. It sounded and felt like it was coming from the drivers side.
Now a week later i have a weird constant whirring/growling noise coming from the drivers side wheel area. Which only stops when I stop completely or take a right hand turn.
So I think its a wheel bearing due to the fact it stops when I turn right, but thats why im here im not totally sure.
I have a 03 1.8t jetta if i turn the steering wheel all the way to either side a epc light comes on and cuts power a lot what could this be....

What could be causing it? cause im doing my year end "maintenance" (if its worn/almost broke, perfect excuse to buy upgrades) ...
My control arms are brand new with r32 bushings as are my 034strut mounts/bearings. I checked my steering fluid level and its good.

I installed momo steering wheel and went for a drive everything was fine horn worked, just the traction control light wont come off .

When I start the car and try and immediately turn the wheel (like to back out of a parking space), the steering makes a soft 'woop woop woop' noise as i turn the wheel. It quickly goes away and the rest of the drive is noise free but it is just that first time. What this could be?

View 9 RepliesI have a 2006 Kia Rio base sedan. I've owned it from 55K miles to 70.5K miles. It does not have power steering.
When moving at rather slow speeds, maybe 0-15 or so mph, it seems that bumps or potholes or other irregularities will cause the steering wheel to turn significantly. I feel the steering wheel move back and forth by itself and the wheels feel like they "flop" to either direction to the whim of the road's irregularities if that makes sense. The wheel feels almost as if someone is grabbing it and moving it back and forth. The movement is forceful enough that if I'm not holding the wheel, the car can really wander around, possibly into another lane but I have not wanted to test that.
I tried looking up this issue on existing threads but couldn't find it. Also, I didn't really know what to call it. I had an apparently useless alignment at Firestone about a week ago (car still pulls to the right) which did not seem to affect the issue. I attached a scan of the alignment sheet thing.
Incidentally, it seems like they left a thing out of spec but maybe that's a whole other question. So, what could cause this and whether it can lead to damage or safety hazards?
Sometimes the headlights won't come on unless you move the steering wheel up & down.
View 1 RepliesI have a bad wheel bearing but on the highway my steering wheel shakes. It is only on the highway not down residential streets. I'm pretty sure it is the driver's side wheel bearing. I already balanced my wheels and everything.
View 5 RepliesNoisy steering wheel. It doesn't matter where I position the wheel, I'm hearing clatter when going over bumps or when putting pressure on the wheel. It has no effect on steering. I think it's coming from somewhere inside the adjustment mechanism. I figure the dealer will need to take a look.
View 7 Replies My R32 which has around 45k was running fine until I went to leave work. As soon as I got in and went to back up I noticed, I had a red steering wheel warning light lit and I had no power steering. It ran fine at lunch and had been sitting for several hours at this point.
I only have two other known issues with my car. One the starter motor is squealing and has been for a while. When the dealer looked at it, he said it would probably fail one day, but it wasn't something I needed to take care of now. I have yet to have a single issue actually starting the car. I figured I would hold off until I found a local mechanic I liked since it was out of warranty. The other issue is during two especially hot days my fuel gauge fluctuated and I would get the low fuel warning even though I had more than half a tank. They also looked at that and said it was just the sending unit which failed to respond several times during their tests. It hasn't happened since but it was on the to do list.
Is it common for the power steering to just fail like that? I have read that a low or dying battery will give off weird electrical errors so I am hoping it might be something simple like that or possibly a fuse which I couldn't check tonight.
If it is not something simple like that, what I might be looking at as far as fixing it goes? Of course it had to happen on a Thursday night so I don't even know if I will be able to find somewhere to look at it and I don't have a scanner. Also without power steering I don't really trust trying to drive it anywhere.
Ok, it is a brand new car(Nissan)and when on the highway and turning(road curving right) the steering wheel is very tight/tough/resists to turn right and it pushes back to the left. When turning left it is nice and easy. What is crazy is this happened to my fiancee's last lease and(after 4 service visits) they rotated the tires or and it went away but the only bad thing was when it was time to rotate the tires it came back. The car was a different model Nissan. My question is was could make a BRAND NEW car do this? We checked tire pressure and it is fine and I also had two other family members drive it and they felt it right away.

View 8 RepliesRandom question, when you are stopped and pull your e-brake do your headlights turn off? I feel like they did in my 20th but I can't recall. If they do, mine isn't working,my e-brake light also does not come on when pulled.
View 6 Replies05' TDI Jetta. The headlights will not turn on. The DRL's will work. I changed the dimmer switch, and put in a Euro switch to try and fix it. But the only thing I get when I turn on the headlights are the running lights. All the running lights and interior (dash) lights work fine. I checked the fuses and pulled the 173 relay (to kill the DRL's).
