Every time I hit a bump, even a small one, I get a high-pitched rattle from the center of my dashboard that sounds just like a cricket chirp. I'll bring it up when I visit the dealer for a courtesy check-up, but Was it diagnosed and repaired?
View 24 RepliesWhilst driving on the motorway at the weekend I noticed a very load high pitched noise which seemed to be coming from the rear/centre underside of the car. It lasted for about 30 seconds and then went. It has happened before about two months ago and after the first instance I had the haldex and rear diff oil changed. On both occasions it has been very wet on roads with torrentian rain.
View 2 RepliesI am slowly coming up on my 3 year anniversary with my Santa Fe 2007 3.3 AWD transmission , and after 50,000 trouble free miles I've encountered a problem.
It started this summer when I was towing my trailer on about a 300 mile journey. It sounded like a high pitched humming or whirling from the dashboard, while decelerating. It would stop at around 15 MPH. You cannot hear it while cruising. After days of head scratching I determined that the noise is coming from the transmission. It comes from the output side, as it shifts through all the gears smoothly, however it makes the sound with the engine off while coasting with the transmission in neutral too.
I noticed the transmission fluid was slightly burnt. As I am student, the problem was solved by turning up the radio, and as the car shifts great no thought was given.
During Christmas break I drove the car out to the west coast and about 400 miles into the journey the whining really got loud and frankly freaked me out. The car now sounds like little aircraft jet engines whinding down when you decelerate. OK its not as loud but when you're 400 miles into a 1600 mile trip you tend to get panicky about such things.
The car made it back fine. It still shifts great except for the whiney turbine noises that disappear below 15mph. I've got transmission fluid so I will start today by doing a couple drain and fills, but I suspect that since I've been a bit too lackadaisical about the problem that will not be sufficient.
I have been getting a loud, high-pitched mechanical-sounding noise coming from the middle of the dash, near the CD player. It lasts only a few seconds, but it scares the sh!t out of me every time! It happens out of the blue after I've been driving for a few minutes about every 3 weeks or so. The sound is almost impossible to describe...but if you've had it happen you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. It happened today while I was listening to a CD, so I can't imagine it's the player that's doing it. Non-Nav/Air V8
View 1 RepliesMy mother, who is retired, has a Subaru Forester, probably a 2001 or thereabouts. It runs great, but recently whenever you let off the brakes, there is a high-pitched whistling sound that comes out of the dashboard on the driver's side. My mother claims that she took this to a mechanic and they told her that there is a small vacuum leak in the power brake line. They also told her that the leak was small and that there was no hurry to fix it (that was in April). Now it is August and my mother is still putting off fixing it because of the cost. They will have to pull out the engine and the dashboard to get to the leak. In the meantime, she continues to drive the car saying that the worst that will happen if it fails is that the power brakes won't work, but she'll still have her regular disk brakes, she'll just have to mash down her foot a little harder. Is this safe?
View 6 RepliesYesterday, I noticed a rattling sound coming from the entire car a 2002 subaru outback 2.5l 4 cylander (it seems a bit louder on the passenger side but it literally can be heard throughout the car). I was on the expressway and got off and stopped at a red light when the check engine light came on and started to flash and the rpm's dropped rapidly and the needle began to bounce up and down. I pulled into a gas station to check it out more and popped the hood to find that when the car is rattling it is also shaking and rocking the engine of the car from side to side slightly.
When I'm idling the rpm's drop and the car feels like it is going to stall out. Then, as I accelerate, the rpm's barely go above 2000 and jump up quickly between 3000 & 4000. It sounds like a metal on metal rattle with a very slight high pitched whistle and you can hear a fan kick on and the engine try to keep the rpm's up every couple of seconds when the car is stopped. I had the timing belts replaced 2 years ago and it sounds very similar to how it did when they needed to be changed, however, the engine never felt like it was going to stall until yesterday.
When idling the noise gets louder and when accelerating it can still be heard but barely. Also, the rattling has caused the entire car to vibrate all of the time. I noticed yesterday that the oil was low and topped it off, but I don't think that would cause such a hige issue so quickly. When I go uphill, i have a good amount of power but every 30 second or so the car shifts and the rpm's jump lurching the car forward because of the surge of power. Also, when I hit the brakes, my rpm's jump slightly to about halfway above the 1 but the engine does not accelerate.
It took a long time to figure it out where this rattle was coming from, when I did i was on my road trip to Smokey Mountains, i couldn't wait to get to the dealer and just solved it myself.
Just extend the arm rest and raise it you will find a rectangle shaped plastic which moves back and forth, remove this plastic. Be careful when pulling it out, or you might end up like i did (check pic), i don't intend to put the plastic back. Center arm rest raised and extended out.

I know this is a long shot but experienced a rattle coming from the center vent section and have a fix for it? Normally small rattles don't bother me, and it's a VW, but it's loud enough that I can hear it over the radio, so it's particularly annoying.
I took the headunit and vent out, tried to tighten the screws that secures the structure that holds the headunit in and looked around, didn't see anything. If you apply pressure to the top of the center vent it makes the rattle go away too.
So at this point, I'll have to take it into the dealer unless someone has a found a fix for it. 3,000 miles and three problems that have required trips to the dealership /end rant
Have a super annoying rattle from the top vent on top of the dashboard in the middle. I can put my wifes handbag on it in order to stop it. Told the dealer about it the past 4 visits and get different answers every time but no fixes. Passed 15k miles and now they say rattle warranty is over so how hard is it to take the vent off so i can doctor some foam tape or something in there?

Not the turbo, its much louder than that, i searched about the water pump issues and no one seemed to mention any associated noise, just coolant on the driveway. Waterpump? Alternator?

View 14 RepliesWhile driving home tonight in the snow, about half away home I noticed the most god awful high pitched squeal sound coming from what sounded like the back passenger side of the car. The squeal was so loud it made me cringe. I couldn't really get any near 40 mph because I could hear it start and instantly it would become really loud and would only stop when I slow down almost completely and then maintain a speed around 30 mph. It's pitch black out so I couldn't conduct a real thorough inspection however a quick look over and I didn't see anything wrong.
View 22 RepliesI've got a steady and consistent high pitched whine coming from the rear of the car. It's only audible when the car is running idle and/or at a standstill, A/C and radio off. Also can't be heard while driving. I've ruled out any rear diff issues and thinking it might be the fuel filter. I recall noticing the sound soon after getting the car, however it's gotten more prevalent recently.
View 2 RepliesNoticed this shortly after taking delivery but now it's become worse. When I'm under hard throttle or on really grainy/old paved roads I can hear this rattle like there is no tomorrow. At first, I thought it was something plastic behind the speedo and I tried pressing/tapping and praying for this to go away haha.
I've come to realize it's coming from the dashboard where the VIN plate is attached.
I recently noticed that my Golf R was making a strange high pitched whine and it seemed like there was no boost. I took my car to the dealer, and it turns out that part of the CAI broke off (a mounting component) and made its way into the turbo, effectively destroying it.
My dealer was initially intending to cover the turbo under warranty (prior to investigation), but now that it is clear that a failure in the CAI caused the issue, they cannot (obviously) cover it under VW warranty. Unitronic CAI failure led to turbo failure.
The serviced manager did some research prior to getting back with me, and was somewhat puzzled since the Unitronic CAI displayed on their website looked slightly different from mine in that the component that failed was not there. The service manager called Unitronic and learned that the failed component was a known issue (it had apparently failed before), and thus they modified the design - hence the picture of the revised version did not match the older version that was installed on my Golf R. The Unitronic rep offered to replace the CAI - but did not mention anything about the failed turbo (when he spoke to the service manager).

Yesterday I noticed that there was a high pitched squeaking noise coming from the front of the car as I was driving. It was loud enough to hear over the radio, which I muted to confirm where it was coming from. It sounded as if it whatever was making it was rotating, if that makes sense. It was the most noticeable from speeds 5 mph to 30 mph, but I couldn't tell if it was the wheels or engine compartment. I have 4300 miles on it.

Anyhow, the R is making a horrendous high pitched noise while coasting to a stop. This starts at just under 30 mph and is most pronounced in neutral. Accelerating in gear stops it. It is loud inside and louder outside and there is some rough "clanking" associated with it. My guess is a belt or bearing. It is coming from the front passenger side.
It's been pretty cold here and haven't started my R in 2 days at the most. I turned it over this morning and got this high pitched noise, like maybe a belt slipping or a bad bearing? The CEL flashed a few times then went away.
I couldn't stick around to check codes or inspect the bay, but what it might be?
I'm having a strange, very high-pitched, noise that seems to be coming from my turbo or (possibly) somewhere else in the engine bay. It sounds very screechy, and it may be paranoia, but I believe it also may have a slight metallic sound to it.
It all started yesterday after changing the thermostat housing for the third time in 2 days (autozone sold me a faulty, warped, housing that leaked after install). During this repair the engine never overheated (it did however leak fluid and go a little low) and the main point for replacement was a stuck thermostat. After finally getting it fixed I took it for a test drive and noticed the horrid noise after hitting a good amount of boost (no gauge installed). The noise occurs when boosting and doesn't happen when spooling in the 3k-4k range. I had no hint of the noise before this.
There doesn't seem to be any drop in performance and it still pulls hard. Hoping this to be a loose exhaust connection or boost leak. May be spooling sound escaping.

I just got my MKVI late January, and it currently has 3k miles on it. 2DR CSG.
Almost everyday in the mornings when I drive my car to work, there is this high pitch ticking/clacking sound coming from the passenger side vent/dash/A Pillar area.
It only happens over dumps on uneven surfaces or when I launch from a stop/red light. Keep in mind I have a manual. Its a rapid ticking/clacking sound that goes with the uneven surface or any sort of vibration on the road.
It usually goes away maybe after 20 mins of driving (I'm thinking it has to do with the temperature warming up). Or if its sunny out, it just magically goes away.
I've brought it to the dealer at least 3 times with no cure, because it takes me at least 20 minutes to get there. The tech would literally have to come to my house in the morning and listen while i start the car up and drive to "duplicate" the sound.
I originally thought it was static coming out of the right speaker due to bad wiring. Had the right speaker replaced already, sound is still there.
Theres a loud rattling noise coming from somewhere inside the center console, where the shift lever is, that's annoying as hell! Sounds like a metal ball bearing bouncing around against other metal pieces. I put my fingers down there and touched everything I could to try to stop the rattling but I couldn't. I did not remove the foam insulation.
