Need to noticeably reducing road/tire noise? I love how civilized and relaxed this car can be, but there is a decent amount of noise while cruising. Nothing extreme, but if I could reduce this by a good amount, without much of a weight penalty, I would certainly consider it. Is dynamat a feasible option? And yes, the soundaktor is long gone.
View 9 RepliesI can't stand that noise anymore.. When I cruising under 20mph the noise coming from the engine bay driver side, sometime both sides. I did a search on the forums so I replaced the front control arm bushing, Strut mounts, strut bearings. Yesterday I replaced the 034 transmission mount to OEM mount, I can't believe it the 034 mount last for 10K miles ONLY. But the noise is still there and make me crazy..... Is possible my PSS coilover went bad?
View 14 RepliesI have a 2012 mk6 and did stage 1 APR about 3 months ago and loved every single moment of it. It made a huge difference on the car but like all good things they don't last forever so it was time to move to bigger, better things so I went stage 2 this weekend ( apr stage 2 carbonio, APR downpipe and reflash ). I installed it at a VW dealer in Mount Prospect, IL, same place where I got my stage 1 installed.
When I drove off with the car everything seemed to be just fine and the gains were noticeable. Later on as I was cruising I started hearing a rattling noise coming from the front of the car, right under the DSG shifter. I was thinking it could be one of the clamps that was used to install the DP, I didn't get a chance to look under the car yet. What it might be? This morning when I turned on the car, I did not hear the rattle...
I drive a 2010 Golf Wagon/JSW, and when I'm going at speeds around +60 mph/90 kmph and lift off the accelerator a faint high pitched whirling noise comes on. As soon as I tap the gas pedal it goes away. What this could be?
It's been a week now since I've noticed this, I guess I've never noticed it before or it's getting louder..i don't know?
I've got a 2003 Jetta TDI Wagon 250k mi. Makes the wroh wroh wroh wheel bearing sound, but wheel bearings are new and rock solid. I have been able to feel it through the floorboard and steering wheel for months now. But yesterday, while cruising at about 80MPH on I64, it got worse. Every now and then, I get a clunk clunk clunk mixed in with the wroh wroh wroh and it sounds really bad. When I turn hard left, the sound goes away. When I turn right, It sounds like satan is trying to escape my engine bay. The faster I go, the more violent it gets. No clicking when I turn, so I've ruled out outer CV joint, but was thinking that maybe it was the inner Cv joint?
View 6 RepliesPicked up an R about a month ago. Have noticed a harmonic vibration when cruising just above 70 mph to 75 mph from the rear. I can assure you that it is not the wheel balance. Seems to go away if I depress the clutch. I'm thinking it is the butterfly valve on the muffler not fully closing and creating a resonance by fluttering at the rpms (exhaust flow) between 70-75 mph. I haven't tried disconnecting/plugging the vacuum line yet.

If I am just putting along with my foot barely on the gas sometimes the car will give a jerk or a lurch like it's trying to decide whether or not to go fast or stall. Just a really quick bit of feeback that makes me think...what was that? Here are some common elements:
-Only happens when cruising at relatively gentle speeds (100km/hr or 55mph)
-Seems to happen more often if it's windy? Has happened a few times when passing by semi trailers
-Seems to happen more frequently when there is snow on the road or blowing snow?
Could it be some sort of sensor or air filter problem? No codes have been thrown.
So me wife has put on about 7000 miles on her new tdi. It's a dsg, 2012. We brought it in for some warranty work and oil change at 600miles.
She is having bucking forward and back issues in the morning and after the car has sat for a while. When you go to accelerate light throttle it literally jerks forward and back and moves you in your chair when shifting first to second.
Dealer said no codes no updates nothing. I know the dsg is clunky normally but it literally jerks us back and forth in the seat 2 to 3 times or more.
Also when on the highway it surges up and down when cruising 70 to 75 like wind is blowing the car with steady throttle.
I told dealer last visit to reset the dsg gearbox as my wife did 70%traffic driving the first 4000miles. Now it's 90% highway.
My 2000 Toyota Sienna has been making some concerning noises. It makes a periodic grinding noise, the period is related to the wheel speed...i.e. the noise happens once each time the wheel goes around. I can hear it while I drive, and it's even louder when I roll down the windows. The weird thing is that the noise stops when I hit either the breaks or the gas. First mechanic says that the wheel bearings are shot, and the second says they're fine. There is no "jet engine taking off" noise that I am told is typical of shot bearings, but there is a wump-wump-wump noise at higher speeds.
View 1 RepliesI did a search and what I saw all had to do with noise at startup.Mine is during cruising. I have a 2007 Sonata 4 cylinder with 112K miles. Within the last few months it began making a slight chattering noise when I accelerate and when cruising. It's worst around 55mph. When I let off, it almost goes away, but is loudest when I just am feathering the pedal to maintain speed.
If I put the pedal down a little more and accelerate, it is not loud, but still faintly there. At first I thought it was a tapping sound, but I've let some of my friends listen and its more like a clattering, metal rattling, or vibration perhaps. Its hard to describe. A week ago I had the check engine light come on with a "P0011 Hyundai - 'A' Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced Or System Performance Bank 1".
I changed the oil and took it into a local shop and they cleared the code/light and checked things out (the light hasn't reappeared). I had them take off the valve cover and make sure the top end was not making the noise. It seemed fine to them. They suggested I take it to the dealer for further diagnosis. I have not yet. It does not make noise during start up. If I have time I will upload a audio recording later. What may be making the noise? It seemed to get a little louder after the latest oil change, but that's probably me being more sensitive to the problem.
I have a 2013 Golf R Apr stage 2+ with about 74k on the odo. I have been stage 2 for about 5k and was stage 1 for about 20k before going stage 2. Changed my plugs and coils at stage 2 as well. So was driving on the highway at about 60 just cruising when all of a sudden there was a minor hiccup in the car and then pushed the gas pedal and nothing, RPMs started falling and then car shut off, put the clutch in and coasted to the side of the road. Tried to restart and it would not.
I have power and car tries to start but won't catch and turn over. Towed it back to a buddies shop and let it sit overnight, still won't start. started poking around. Checked Hpfp and everything seems fine, cam follower and cam are good. Noticed that when I open my drivers door now I don't hear the other fuel pump prime like it usually does and after putting hpfp back on and opening drivers door a couple times we checked the Schrader valve on the hpfp and no fuel came out like it usually would. Have it narrowed down to most likely culprits; Faulty in tank fuel pump, faulty fuel pump control module, faulty fuel pump relay.
Btw just thought of this, no check engine light ever came on, also don't have a way to pull codes.
Just had this happen to me yesterday and cant figure it out. Cruising at normal speeds and shifting into 5th gear at about 2000 rpm. when to apply throttle and the car chocked or slipped then regained power. Almost like it went into limp mode for a second or traction control kicked in. Im not sure what it could be.
View 11 RepliesI thought I had noticed something odd going on the other day but today definitely confirmed it. I was cruising in 5th or 6th gear around 45mph and 1,500rpm and I felt what I can only describe as an acceleration pulsation. It was almost as if I was just cruising and then slammed the acceleration pedal to the floor, released it, pressed it again, etc. This only went on for maybe 5-6 seconds but it was noticeable. The same thing once happened on my '07 GTI and then it never happened again. I will say that this happened literally 1/2 mile after completely filling my gas tank. Before filling it, it was next to empty (I had 15 miles left according to the MFD). I will scan for codes later but there was no CEL and it only happened once in the time I was driving.
View 8 RepliesSo I got a new rattle that I cannot find the source of. It's definitely coming from around/above the pedals. For some reason you only hear it when your cruising around 60. It doesn't increase with speed. It actually sounds more like a ticking. I've tightened the plastic guard above the pedals and the dead pedal with no results.
View 2 RepliesI was cruising at around 80 mph and the epc and check engine light flashed for a second, and I felt a slight loss of power for a second then it was normal after that. When I pulled over and check out the engine, it was making this noise (video) when I got home, I scanned it with my vagcom and got P0333 knock sensor signal too high, maf sensor signal low, and a clutch pedal switch I've replaced the bushings on the intake rod with the gruven bushings and the sound is still there.
View 11 RepliesOccasionally I can feel light jerking when cruising steadily at around 2200 rpm. for a second the rpms increase by ~50, not enough even to notice any change in speed, and then goes back where it was. it is as if the clutch was slipping.
My first thought was MAF so took one from a working car but problem did not go away.
A minor thing that may be unrelated: the transmission also sometimes doesn't set shiftpoints properly, i.e., when accelerating uphill, it would go from 1st to 2nd ok, then when it reaches the point to shift to 3rd, the 3rd gear stays only for a second or so, and then shifts to 4th.
So I disconnected the MAF sensor altogether and the problem went away! My conclusion was then that it must be the wiring between ECU and MAF, so checked the cables between ECU and MAF, found all resistances within spec (below 2.5 Ohm). Since the problem is intermittent, the resistance of the cables doesn't tell much.
Checked with vag-com and there are no codes. Where to go from there? 2003 AVH (auto)...
I get a loud noise from the rear of my 2005 Subaru Outback, 67k miles.(No it's not my dog Pete)Starts as a WHOP, WHOP, WHOP that speeds up as the car speeds up 'til it's a loud drone at cruising speed. I thought it was older tires but changed those Saturday. No effect.

Driving 70mph 5the gear and cruise control set. Motor just died and I pulled off.
Cars back home in the garage. Iv ordered the ecs tuning timing belt kit.
This was a belt I installed 50k miles ago, shouldn't have gotten a auto parts store belt, or maybe it was my install, but I deff didn't think the belt was going to fail that early. Is there much of a difference between different brand belts and OEM?
I have an 06 Touareg V8 with AWD, auto tranny. No leveling suspension. And when I drive it specially while my foot is on the gas at cruising speeds there's a grinding noise coming from under the car. When I step off the gas it is gone or when I am accelerating hard I can't hear it. What could it be? It's driving me and my ocd insane!! I think it is drivetrain related (differential, wheel bearing, etc.) but not the transmission as I can still hear it while coasting in neutral.

No trouble shifting though. I got rear-ended by a big Lexus SUV last week, but wouldn't think that would have anything to do with it. Just damaged the bumper a little.

In 5th gear, cruising on highway, there's a low grinding/ rattling noise. it doesn't do it if you try to accelerate, or if you have no throttle input at all, meaning it only makes the noise when trying to keep one speed, typically around 2000-2500 rpm. If i grab the shifter and apply pressure in any direction, the noise goes away. I've owned the car for 3 years now and its always done it, and hasn't gotten any worse or changed at all. I'm experiencing no performance issues and just chalked this up to gear noise, but recently read someone else was having same issue, and everyone was clamoring on about needing new bearings.
