Golf/GTI VI :: Noisy CV Boots When It Rains?
Jan 28, 2012
Do the wet boots make a clicking/rubbing type noise when turning on your car? It happen on my 2012 GTI, but only when it rains. It's really loud when I turn inside a parking garage. It's definitely not the joint itself, but rather is the rubber boot sticking to itself and releasing on the compressed side of the boot during the turn. No other car of mine has made this type of noise, even those with cheap Chinese aftermarket axles.

So I finally got a chance to pull the front wheels off the car yesterday and noticed that BOTH outer CV boots are ripped and there is grease everywhere. How long this has been going on for but I haven't noticed any grinding or popping noises yet so hopefully they're still good.
I've checked on ECS Tuning and they have replacement boots, OEM ones. I'm honestly really low on funds, and would like to opt for the cheaper ones but wondering if I will regret it,
Also, as far as replacing the boots go, I'm sure it's easiest just to remove both axles correct? Do I need any special tools for this job? Any DIYs? This is my daily so I will have to drive it like this for the time being although I really don't want to.?

I'm getting water on my passenger floorboard. It's a large amount too! Where it's coming from if it's a common thing? Also, since I'm not too familiar with the ins and outs of these cars yet, how do i access the "trouble spot"?

2002 AVH Jetta Wagon. When I got the car back in 2012 it had 121K and I changed the wires (ngk blue 57021) and plugs (ngk platinum) and she drove like a dream. A couple of months later I started having issues with wet weather and moisture causing misfires so I did the JB WELD fix and though I'd still get the occasional misfire in hard rains it lasted me pretty much until very recently, when I decided I needed to put in a new coil because the problem was getting worse (hardly starting up after a rain and bucking wildly till things dried out). Yesterday, I replaced the BERU with a new HUCO and the car started up fine and drove fine all day. I think there was a lot of moisture in the air last night and possibly some rain but this morning, SAME PROBLEM with a new coil. Misfiring like crazy, no acceleration.
I thought the NGK wires and plugs I got were rated to last beyond 20,000 miles. At this point should I assume the wires are to blame? Split somewhere or something? It's definitely related to water and the electrical system.

My AC fan has gotten noisy. Maybe the bearing is going or maybe I can oil it and get rid of the problem that way. Any instructions on how to access it?

Took my car in (2011 Golf Base 2dr 5spd) for it's 10k mile oil change and checkup and mentioned that the A/C sounded a little noisy, kind of like a whine, every so often. It didn't really bother me but my wife would complain about it. The air was ice cold and I just figured maybe it was normal. Well I got a call from the service advisor and he said the noise was due to an internal failure and they were going to replace the compressor. I sure was surprised. Got the car back and the A/C is just as cold and is now nice and quiet.
So if your A/C is even slightly noisy I would bring it up. Could save yourself having to replace a costly compressor down the road.

Some replaced the rear shock absorbers with Bilstein B$ OEM shocks. One claimed it fixed the problem.
VW dealers and mechanic claim that is normal for the car , no repair necessary?!!?

I have a standard 2001 model VW Golf 1.6L automatic. For the size of the engine it has it is pretty noisy.

Any troubleshooting tips on determining where the noise is coming from at the rear of the car? There is a pretty audible hum at 55 mph coming from the rear of the car and I am not sure if its the balancer or the diff. I'm reading horror stories of improperly serviced rear diffs causing the diff to fail and starting to freak out.

When I drive up and down hills I am noticing a lot of noise from my doors now... I have a 2 door Gold TDI... it almost sounds like they are moving or something...

I have had this basically since i got my car. I brought it up with VW and the best explanation they could offer was the DMF. When i set off, more so at low rpm and under load (like reversing out of a spot and continuing forward) i get a knock from the drivetrain. Its not super loud, but it is certainly noticeable. Everyone i have asked has said it just sounds like the Dual Mass Flywheel making noise, but should i be at all worried? I made sure i have it on record with VW that i noticed the noise and they said its no big deal.

Driving home after picking up my daughters and had a nice pop followed by noisy shaky engine. Coolant is bone dry and the reservoir drains right to the floor, oil leaked from the pop location to a puddle under car...

In my 6 day old Golf TSI, I'm noticing the rearview camera is quite noisy when it deploys and retracts. I don't recall how it sounded during test drives, but I'm surprised I can hear it at all, let alone as loudly as it seems.
Likely normal, but thought I'd post this up to see what others are experiencing. Might drop by the dealership and check another one out for comparison.

Any tips for keep rear tire wear to a minimum? Mine are starting to cup along the inner edge and are very noisy at 20, and 40 mph. 20mph is worse even in the front end.

I just bought my first .:R32. Having a few minor issues:
1. When I open the door in the morning, the fuel pump primes the system and makes a high pitched sound (kind of like RFI). It's there when I have the car on also. So do you think I should buy a new pump and take it with me just in case?
2. This was happening before I bought the car. When I first move either forwards or backwards there is a clicking sound coming from the right front of the car. After I get moving, it goes away.
3. Just replaced the front right coilover assembly and there is a clunking noise coming from the strut (I think). What it could be? Maybe strut top bushing? Or ball joint making weird noises?

Well, Car is in the shop to get the trans looked at. Loud whining noise in 1, 2, 3. corresponds with engine speed, not road speed. I think input shaft bearings are shot. Going to get a new clutch and throwout bearing while it's out. 116K miles.

I have an 04 Jetta 1.8T that I recently acquired and have a problem with a noisy manual tranny. Reverse is a bit noisy (more than usual) and when I get on it in 1st and 2nd gear it sounds like an awful whining noise. I have been told it could be either a bad throw out bearing or input bearing? BTW this thing shift perfect, like butter, no grinding at all.

I'm not sure if this qualifies for a "cold start" but my 1.8T sounds imperfect when I start it for the first time of the day. It'll rev around 1200 RPM, instead of the normal 800RPM idle if I start it after it had recently been turned off for a short period.
It sounds almost like my old car that had an exhaust leak, but not as obnoxious. When it settles back down to 800RPM it really purrs and sounds great. Is this normal?
2003 Wolfsburg Jetta 1.8T, not sure if I wrote that in my profile yet. 41k miles and recently serviced for 40k milage. Has sounded this way before and after the service.

Went in for a tune-up and inspection on my 03 1.8 passat. Turns out my cv boots are shot. How much should I expect to pay for parts & labor, I will not be going to the vw stealership to get this done. It's just the fronts that need to be done.

My girlfriend and I replaced both of thee axles on her Passat this past spring. She just brought her car in for a oil change and the mechanic noted that both outer CV Boots are twisted and leaking and the right front sway bar link has some play. Do these two could problems could be connected? Is the sway bar link a replace able part?

So I went to rotate my tires today and noticed grease around the inside of the rim to which i then noticed that my Drive Axle Boots are ripped. I noticed the grease around the wheel well last time I changed my oil and thought it was something I drove through. I guess Not How much should this job cost? I called the mechanic and he said because there is no "clicking" noise when I turn that he can replace the boots and add grease and it should be fine but that job will cost $500, $250 for each side. Should I stop driving the car right away?
