I have a stock GTI MKVI and now if I turn or cut the wheel sharp to park (all at slow speed) I get a ratcheting sound from up front. It is not the suspension "clunk" that some lowered cars get.
View 7 RepliesI have a buddy who has an 01 B5 w/ 1.8t and 5 speed. He asked me to try and find out why it has been making a mysterious noise. I do all my own work, so I know a few things, but this noise has me stumped.
On startup, it will make an almost ratcheting kind of sound. Clattery, grumbly ratcheting sound... Goes away in a few seconds. It will also occasionally do this on acceleration.
Now, I am not hugely familiar with the 1.8t (in fact, my VW experience is largely a B4 TDI) so I'm not sure where to start.
One note though- I changed his oil for him, and the first startup right after the oil change the sound almost didn't happen at all. From then on resumed its obnoxious habit.
What this could be? Engine? Tranny? Something else? I didn't get a response over in the 1.8t area so I'm trying here.
Just recently his turbo has decided to contribute very little to power. You can hear it spool a little bit, but it's not what it used to be.
Just recently he had to have his intercooler replaced due to running over a semi tire. I have yet to pull his belly pan to look for loose fittings.
Due to the clicking-ratcheting sound my 1997 Civic makes when I make hard turns or U turns, two mechanics (one drove the car) say that I need two new front axles at a cost of $400 ($200 each). I have driven the car like this for maybe a couple thousand miles before I looking into it. How much longer can I drive it like this before it gets dangerous or fails? I now only make gentle turns and so minimize the clicking-ratcheting sounds that happen only on hard or aggressive turns. The car only has 76,000 miles on it. Is it dangerous to keep driving it?
View 7 RepliesI have a 2005 F350 SD with 217K. It's got a Magnaflow aftermarket exhaust and newer OEM turbo. When I'm driving uphill and around 1800 RPM or higher, the engine makes this weird ratcheting sound when I let off the gas. It almost sounds like air is backflowing somewhere. It doesn't do it on level streets or downhills or when I'm below about 1500 RPM. The sound is not a metal on metal type sounds. It literally sounds like high pressure air backflowing somewhere or not being discharged properly. Also, I bought the truck used a couple months ago. So I'm not sure of all of the aftermarket upgrades done to the engine.

moonroof makes a slight "ratcheting" sound when I raise or lower it,though Roof slides open and closed perfectly.
Wife's 2010 F150 4x4 85000 KMs makes grinding / ratcheting noise in LH front axle when in 2 wheel drive. Mostly when turning left some times when traveling straight never when turning right. Never makes the noise when in four wheel drive. I am suspecting the auto hub is the issue but wonder if others have had this trouble ?
View 5 Replies2009 f150 4x4. My front hubs are ratcheting, I probably have a vacuum leak somewhere. Any trick to find it? I had to drive about 90 kilometers to get home, hope I didn't ruin anything. I don't have a vacuum pump, but I have a vacuum gauge.
View 1 RepliesI have a 1997 Subaru Legacy sedan with a 2.2L engine with AWD. When I step on the brakes I hear a ratcheting type of sound and feel pulsations in the brake pedal.There is no problem with brake performance that I have noticed. We have replaced the front rotors and front brake pads.We also replaced the rear passenger side brake caliper. It still makes a loud ratchet/groaning-like sound. It makes the sound when you first start braking after starting the car and intermittently while driving. It's not constant when you step on the brakes.

View 5 RepliesIn the last few days I have been hearing like a thumping sound coming from the front of my car. It is happening when i going through a turn with some bumps, slightly aggressive, but not crazy. Haven't been in the canyon since it started so I am not sure how it will react pushing the car to about 7/10. Which is about as close to the limit as I will get off track. The sound has come at about say 4/10. just off ramps and stuff. It sounds very similar to a car with very tight coilovers. Could it be the XDS working? It isn't a clicking like a traditional diff, and I don't expect that it is. But obviously I don't have a lot of driving experience with an electronic diff like the XDS. I will take the car to VW as soon as i have time.
View 2 RepliesI am having this issue when crossing a bump at high speed, it only sound when the shocks de-compress and only happening in the mornings so I think it might be the piston rod inside the shocks that is "getting dry" on the night and therefore making the sound in the mourning.
View 3 RepliesI have FK Highsport coilover and have had them installed for a little under a year. After about 6 months I started hearing this thunk sound coming from the front right suspension. The sound only happens when I turn right, and when I turn from right to straight. I haven't had the time to pull it apart yet. I was thinking that it might be a binding spring.
View 2 RepliesI have a clunking noise from the right front suspension when going over bumps. I've replaced the Strut bushings that were collapsed, the control arm bushings that had play and the noise is still there. There is no play in the links. There is a slight noise in the sway bar bushings when struck with a rubber mallet. I hate to keep replacing parts chasing down this noise.
View 9 RepliesI have recently started hearing a knocking sound coming from the front of the car when i am turning. It does not happen with every single turn, but i notice it mainly when i am at a standstill and go to make a relatively sharp turn and give it a good amount of gas. Now I am not trying to do a burnout or fly off the line, but its not a grandma start either. slightly more enthusiasm than your normal daily drive start.
View 5 RepliesI just replaced my stock shocks with Bilstein HDs. I am using the stock springs.When going around a continuous right bend , like an exit off ramp, there is a knocking sound coming from the driver side front wheel area. The sound is present only when not accelerating (foot off the gas) the knocking sound stopped once the accelerator is pressed.
I replaced the rubber upper mount and bushing when I installed the shocks, and I have checked that everything is tight. Is the problem the cv joint? I did not have this problem before I changed the shocks. I searched this subject, but no one has described exactly what I have observed.
So I've had my R now for almost 6 months now and my PSS10's have been in it since day 1. I bought the car approx 4 months used with 8200kms on it. It's now at 16600km's.
Ever since I've had it, there's been a front end suspension noise that reminds me very much of the typical upper strut mount bearing and bushing noises. It's like a popping sound.
It only happens at low speed(parking lot) but with most moves like fwd, rev, turns and straight lines. The upper strut mount bearings and bushings were just replaced < 2 weeks ago, but it still does it and just as bad.
I have a 2004.5 Jetta GLI 1.8T. 96K miles.
The sound just started a couple of weeks ago and is becoming more prominent. On cold starts (like in the morning or after sitting for a while), the front right of the car makes a repeated clicking/ clunking sound while in neutral. However, the second I apply any gas, the sound goes away. Only when my engine is idling at around 700-800 rpms does it make the sound. After driving the car around for about 10 minutes or so ("warming up"), the sound eventually goes away and comes back on the next cold start.
Yesterday, my ABS light came on and never went away. I have no idea if there's any relation. May be a separate issue. I've tried searching for a diagnosis with no luck. Thoughts on what I might be hearing?
I have a sound that sounds like something is loose in the left front suspension area. A few weeks ago I put on VWR springs and 034 strut mounts. Then I got a tire rotation and alignment with in the same day. On Friday night it started making noise. While driving at any speed and the slightest bump I will hear the noise. There is no vibration in the steering wheel and nothing seems off about how the car handles. When I parked the car I tried pushing down on the front end and I didn't hear any thing abnormal. I jacked up the car today and I looked around and felt around on most of the suspension to see if anything was loose or out of place. I didn't notice any thing.

It only happens on low rpm's and I can hear it best when it's in neutral, if I give the brakes a little push I can hear it louder, more profound, and can also feel it on my feet a little, but I don't only hear it while I have the pedal depressed. So..what it could be?

My problem I just noticed today in FL, 61 degrees out, is when I go over speed bumps my fronts make the very wet shock compression sound of KW v3's and then i hit my rears, going about 5mph and I hear a squeak sound. Now this sound is a problem sound, it sounds like somethings getting torqued or a rubber strut is moving or something, I can't really describe it. I hope it's not the shock gone bad!
I have a 2005 jetta 2.0l sedan manual transmission. I recently replaced the front shocks/struts and coil springs. I so replaced the passenger side tie rod end and the passenger side drive shaft or cv axle (not sure what its called). Everything went fine or so I thought. There is a metallic whirring sound coming from the front end and idk how to fix it. I don't even know whats wrong. I went over everything multiple times visually and could find nothing wrong. I tried three different cv axles thinking that was the cause for it and the noise remains. The first two were brand new from autozone and the last one which is still on the car is a good used oem cv axle. I took two videos of the noise....
