Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2004 - No Crank When Ignition Engaged?

Sep 5, 2015

OK, here's the update so far.

- new battery

- all fuses fine in panel, all fuses fine on battery pack.

- am getting power to trigger switch upon engine crank (tested w lamp and volt meter).

- did the 'mechanics tap' on the starter motor body

Still no crank when key is turned, instrument panel/gauges light up as normal

So am I right in thinking that I've narrowed the problems down to:

1) bad solenoid

2) bad starter

3) bad connection between battery and starter

or have I missed something?

Also, is there a way to directly test the starter (or indirectly test the solenoid) by applying power to the starter?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2004 - Have To Hold The Shifter Until Clutch Is Engaged For 3rd Gear Position

I picked up a 2004 GTI not long ago for pretty cheap because it had a few issues. I am working my way through them. However, having 3rd gear issue.

All other gears are perfectly fine but there is way less play in the shifter in the 3rd gear position and I have to hold the shifter in position until the clutch is engaged (pedal up) to avoid the gear grinding. Once the clutch is engaged it stays in 3rd gear fine. It doesn't matter if I am moving from 2nd to 3rd or 4th to 3rd. Same deal. I have aligned the shifter several times using to proper procedures with no effect.

It never grinds 3rd with the clutch disengaged (so the synchro is fine?) and it will bang shift no problem. Oh and the clutch is less than a year old. It was installed by a shop before I bought the car. It's not really a big deal, but I would like to fix it. If I have to swap the trans that's fine, but need to figure out if it is a trans or linkage issue first.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Car Shuts Off With EBrake Engaged

Throwing the following codes:

p2401- evap emission system leak detection pump control circuit low

p0261- cyl 1 injector circuit low
p0267- cyl 3 "
p0270- cyl 4 "
p0264- cyl 2 "

p0445- evap emission system purge control valve circuit shorted

p2257- secondary air injection system control A circuit low

p0010- A camshaft position actuator/open bank 1

p0414- secondary air injection system switching valve A circuit shorted

Obviously an electrical issue, no way all these codes spring up all at once for separate reasons. Any fuses, relays, harnesses or grounds that relate to all or most of these problems.

Car has trouble at start up, takes a little longer to turn over. If I don't stay on the gas it will eventually cut off. Once I am driving its fine. Its only once the E brake is up, it will cut off right after the brake light comes on.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Ignition Stuck / Crank Sometimes Even After Let The Key Go?

The truck seems to continue to crank sometimes even after I let the key go. Kinda like it's having a difficult time starting and NEEDS to be cranked a wee bit more and takes over for me. Is this an ignition issue that I can (need) to address or is it normal. I have ZERO experience with a newer vehicle nor a Ford truck.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Ignition Cylinder Won't Turn

2003 Jetta, has a bad clutch so has been sitting for about 6 months. Unfortunately, it is not the most water tight car, so it is a little humid/damp inside. Here's the issue, put the key in, try to turn it, won't budge. Shot some lock ease in, still no turn. What to try next?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Car Neither Start Nor Crank

I am having trouble with my car not starting, when turning the key nothing happens. I have replaced the battery and have even tried to push the car and do a rolling start could not get it going. I am assuming that if i can't do a rolling start that rules out the starter, is that correct? I also verified all fuses and changed the fuel pump relay.

I am leaning towards an electrical problem (ground/short circuit). I have a Bentley manual and VCDS tool, how to diagnose the electrical problem and pinpoint the issue.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: No Crank And Won't Start?

So I have a no crank no start. All other electrics appear to be working . For the most part I just hear a soft click when I try and start. Doesn't sound like your normal solenoid clicking. New starter, 12v at battery , new ignition switch. It did this to me last month , started taking the ignition out then just only started before I could even get the new part in.

Changed it anyway. Seem to fix it. My next step is going to be to check the ground under the battery. Which I checked and cleaned up a little bit about eight months ago. After that I'll try and jump the starter and check the voltage going to the solenoid. I check the fuses last month when it did it to me and they all seem to be okay.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Turns Over But No Crank?

My car has been sitting for three days and I went to start it and it turns over but doesn't even try to fire. If i press the gas while it's turning over, it doesn't change at all. Do any of you know what could be causing that?

yes I searched and it turned back nothing, so if there is already a thread, could you point me in that direction?

Also, the car previously had a tick on start up for about 30 seconds and then it would disappear, that doesn't seem related to the no cranking thing to me though. The only other strange thing that happened was a week ago when the car dumped an unusual amount of smoke as if it blew a head gasket... but it didn't, and nothing has happened since then until now.

The car used to do frequent trips of 15 or 20 miles at a time every day but now it does 5 or 6 miles every few days and then 300 miles at 80mph each way once a month, so I don't know if the constant 3800 rpms on the long trips could be having some sort of affecting this

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Crunching Noise When Switching Off Ignition

I bought a mk iv 2.0 GTi last week and twice now I've heard a sound what i can only describe as someone stamping on an empty can after switching off the ignition and opening the driver side door.

The sound, sounds like it comes from under the bonnet.

The car runs sweet engine is all clean sounds ok no other knocks or bangs.

What could be causing this? It seems to happen after the engine is warm and I've given it some throttle but only when the engine has just been turned off.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Key Won't Turn After Ignition Switch Replacement

I am having a little issue with the ignition in my car. I had the typical no headlights/wipers/heater etc. so I ordered up a new ignition switch and when I went to replace it, the switch fit perfectly and had the correct part number but when I put my key in to try and start the car I couldn't even turn the key but when I put the old switch back in it would turn just fine. Also when I removed the old switch I noticed the red wire going to the switch was slightly burnt right at the terminal.

Here is the basic procedure I did:

-Unhook negative battery cable

-remove lower dash/ center console

-remove switch

-install new switch

Whats this little metal piece? I did not see that when I did mine...

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Won't Start - Ignition Switch?

Just got this car it's 2001 gti turbo. The guy said that the key fob was back. But I changed the starter and still no luck. It had all new plugs and I went to check for spark and there was no spark or fuel. So then I got a new crankshaft sensor and still no luck. I haven't gotten the chance to check for spark yet. And now those lights and beeping keep happening even without the key In the ignition. Can it be the ignition switch or something worse?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Partial Crank And No Start

So i had my starter crap out on me the other day, it destroyed its self in good fashion. So i replaced it thinking that was going to be the only problem, but once i replaced the starter it STILL wouldn't start. the starter spins, but doesn't engage the flywheel. I can start the car with a bump start no problem...

Things I have done:

- Replaced the battery - 660CCA AcDelco
- Replaced the Ground wires, and positive, with new 1 gauge wire, and cleaned the connections.
- Replaced the starter A new one from acdelco, and a Used one (that was in working order)

Getting 13-13.5 volts while running.

Signal wire is fine, as I've tested the starter by completely bypassing it and just jumping straight from the Batter, still the same situation.

My only thought has been.. is it feasible that the starter may have destroyed a couple of teeth on the flywheel.... so when i goto engage the starter it might go for a quarter revolution and then find the location with the missing teeth and just spin ?

So i got a 2002 gti 1.8t awp . Wont start unless I crank it about 2-4 times. Also noticed a bit of a grinding/high pitched noise when cranking. when the car starts up it idles perfect, doesn't die , drives perfect etc...

Eventually i got the car scanned. & got 2 codes.

P0341 : Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/ Performance B1
&
P0230 : Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction

So I went and bought a Fuel pump , Camshaft position sensor & Even a new starter. Nothing fixed it. & the problem still occurs..

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 VW Crank But Won't Start

I have a 2003 vw golf gti. and It will crank but it wont start. I recently replaced the fuel pump and the relay.

There is no voltage at fuse 28 so I jumped the relay ( using both big pins ) and still no voltage at the fuse. however when its jumped the fuel pump actually runs. Still nothing

I am beginning to think it may be a spark issue but the fuel pump doesn't make a noise unless the relay is jumped.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Died Won't Start But Crank?

Driving home on the highway today, not boosting, just regular driving. Car was acting fine, then just shut off. Tried starting, and it would crank, but not actually start.

Got it towed home. Scanned. Two codes: 01314, Engine Control Module. And again, 01314, Engine Control Module. Tried clearing codes, and it says "comm. error". Im using the VAG Check scanner from ECStuning, has always worked fine.

Thought it could be fuel pump, but the fuel pump primes when I open the door. I did notice that the throttle body refuses to align when I put the key in the second position, when it always has before. Radio works, all presets work. Unplugged the battery for a half hour, replugged, nothing. I'm leaving it unplugged overnight to see if that does anything.
