Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping Slightly At Idle Occasionally

May 7, 2015

So I just noticed now that my car is popping slightly at idle occasionally...It doesn't do it all the time and the idle is kinda lumpy but always holds at 800-900. Sometimes it drops a bit lower.

Also when starting it up in the morning, or when the engine is cold it doesnt rev up to 1500rpms it just starts and immediately drops to 800-900??

When I press on the gas and keep the pedal at one spot, say 2000rpms, it slowly drops down to 1500??

Golf IV R32 :: Popping When Idle - RPM Drop Slightly

When idle, and especially when cold, my R engine tends to do some popping, I can see the RPM drop slightly when this happens and can also hear and feel it in the car and from the engine and exhaust. This only happens when idle, I have no other issues, no drop in performance and no CEL.

It actually has done this for a while now but barely noticeable. Now since 2 weeks it has gone worse to the level of being annoying. What this may be ? Injectors maybe ?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Infrequent Popping Noise At Idle

I can't figure out what this popping noise is that is coming from under the car (towards the back, not from engine). Its infrequent and I only notice it at idle. If I had to guess it would be exhaust related, but that still doesn't sound right. What could it be? See the video below for the sound I am talking about.

Golf IV R32 :: Idle Too High And Shudders Slightly?

So my cars idle has been revving slightly from 9 to 10. siting idle sometimes it will do the same but from 10-11. when it does it shudders the car slightly.

So I stop by a local auto parts and get the check engine scanned.....it comes back as Idle control too high.

So What is that? The guy working there who seems to have some knowledge of turbos said it was either some control piece or a vacuum leak.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Lights Keep Flickering Slightly

I have an 03 Golf VR6 and only has 76k on it. Ive only had it a week but I have come to notice a couple peculiarities. So first off at night regardless of speed or RPMs, ALL OF MY LIGHTS have a slight flicker. Its not a huge difference, but its definitely noticeable. Engine runs fine. No battery light. Additionally, twice when I go to start it in the morning, after starting the alternator workshop light will kick on. after giving it a tiny bit of gas it goes away and doesn't come back. Everything else seems fine. no check engine lights, no trip meter resetting, and the flickering seems to be sporadically. Tonight I tested the battery and alternator and both tested good. My only thought is that it might be a loose ground. Tomorrow I plan on taking a look at the ground under the battery. I've tried searching the threads here, but Im having trouble finding any relevant info. Also, is the voltage regulator inside the alternator, a separate piece, or in the ecm?

Golf/GTI VI :: Rough Idle / Slightly Misfire / Burning Oil

This is my first new car, but I am assuming the idle should be pretty smooth. I feel my idle and it feels sort of rough. Almost like there is a slight misfire but not that intense.

One more question, car burning oil?

@ 7500 miles I was down a little more than a quart and now @ 14,100 I am down almost a quart. That is slightly alarming.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Overheating / Engine Temp Was Slightly About 190?

So to start off, its 10 degrees here with a -7 degree windchill. With that in mind, I was driving home just now from dropping off a friend, and noticed my engine temp was slightly about 190. Didn't think much of it, but within a mile down the road the temp was crossing the final line before the red 260 degree line. I pulled over and let it get down to 190 (luckily didn't take long) but in the next 3 miles home it rose again, then fell, and then rose again as I drove through my neighborhood. I'm thinking maybe the thermostat is going bad...? There's no way it went from normal operating temp to almost overheating as cold as it is....

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Add Brake Fluid As Level Slightly Low?

The brake light came on randomly yesterday, flashing foe about 5 seconds, then shut off. Hasn't come on since, but I looked at the brake fluid resovior and the level is about .5cm (.2inches) below the "min" marker.

Can I just open the resovior, pour in the fluid, recap it and go? I remember hearing from someone that if you open the resovior cap at any time, air rushes in and you must bleed the entire system before you can drive again

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Car Automatically Adjusts Headlights Slightly As Driving

I'm trying to adjust the headlights on my Jetta wagon. I know the basic way to go about doing that theoretically, but how to actually adjust the headlights? Are there screws or something somewhere? I also thought I read somewhere that the car automatically adjusts the headlights slightly as your driving? How do I account for that?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Springy Popping While Backing Up

Diagnosing a possible front suspension issue.

While backing up, I felt a springy popping in my car. I ignored it attributing it to just the freezing temps and kept on driving. After a few miles I felt something got loose and started rattling, but it went away after a few seconds. Maybe a nut got loose and dropped from the car? Anyway, the rattling is gone but during slow turns, I still feel popping or pinging. I don't feel this when driving at highway speeds.

Can it be the strut bearing mount broke ( see pics below)? Looks like the driver side collapsed? Would that explain the sound of something getting loose, that the mount actually broke?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping Noise When Turning Right?

For the last few thousand miles my 99.5 jetta has been making a popping noise (many pops, not just one) only when turning right under acceleration. (No noise when coasting or decelerating in gear and turning right, no noise under any circumstances). no pulsing in the brakes, and the car appears aligned well as it tracks nicely.

The noise is rotational, the faster you go, the faster the pops happen (again, it will make many popping noises, not just one). Probably once per revolution on the tires, not entirely sure. And it is, with as much certainty as i can have, coming from the front passenger side of the car.

I took it into the mechanic twice, first time they couldn't hear it and sent it back. Second time they said it was likely the CV joint so replaced both on the passenger side.

I have to admit that I didnt notice the noise for about 300 miled after that service, and I did try to get it ot happen. but its back now.

All boots and ball joints look ok and no grease has slung out. I am thinking it might be a wheel bearing at the extremely early stages of going.

Right now i am on a "wait and see if it gets worse " course. For the last 1500 or so miles it has not seemed to have changed.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Fuse 37 Keeps Popping / Car Shut Off Randomly

I believe this fuse has to do with radio and convenience options? 2004 mk4 GLI 1.8t. A few weeks back, the fused popped. I replaced it, and drove fine for a few more weeks. Shut off randomly, so I put a fuse in, try to start, it cranks like usual, but doesnt start. Tried with several different 20a fuses. It pops all of them the second I crank the car. Obviously there is a short somewhere. Where? Or know where fuse 37 goes?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Loud Scream Occasionally After Start Up

I've searched the other "screaming" problems but they don't seem to fit, they're either when starting and/or cold, or when flooring it.

My car screams occasionally after I start it. Get in, crank car, let go of key, good beat of pause, and then SCREAM! It's fairly loud. Doesn't do it every time, does it whether hot or cold. Once or twice it screamed again after I had backed up and stopped (no it's not the brakes, they do squeal but it's a different sound).

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Turbo / Engine HP Surging Occasionally

While I'm in the engine troubleshooting the AC system, I figured I may as well get into a few other issues I've noticed.

I have a stock 1.8T and my turbo feels like it's surging occasionally. A few months ago my diverter valve started making the "blow off sound" when I shifted (manual transmission).

Is it possible for a faulty diverter valve to dump the boost overboard and cause the turbo, and engine hp, to surge? It almost feels like I let my foot off the gas for a second or two (i.e., engine power is very peaky).

A second thing that comes to mind is a clogged fuel filter. I know VW does not recommend ever changing it so it's never been done. Is this a possibility as well?

Air filter is clean, by the way. There's a K&N washable one in the stock air box and I can see daylight through it so it's not too dirty.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Cruise Working Occasionally When Car Lowered

The cruise worked perfect before I lowered the car and now it works occasionally.. It was on most of the 10 hour drive to this part of Florida and around town it's worked but has started to act up a bit again now.. Sometimes the cruise light will flash and then won't work but other times it's fine any input? The car is an otherwise stock AWP at 107k miles..

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Bogging Or Gargled Acceleration Occasionally

My car is stored outside rather than in a garage in winter. I do notice bogging or "gargled" acceleration maybe 4/10 on occasional days and sometimes the engine light will come once this happens and then other times it doesn't come on when it occurs. Engine light usually comes on rarely but when it does, it's when the bogging is really bad.

Question is what would be the most cost effective way to solve or find out what the issue is? And/ or, what would you think the underlying issue would be for starters? Also, does my year car have a MAF sensor? BTW the cabin filter and air filter were just changed a few months ago but unsure if this would include the shop cleaning the MAF if I do in fact have one.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Front Passengers Side Strut Popping

I just got a H&R Sport Cup Kit installed along with new strut mounts and bearings on my 2001 GTi. Could it be I have a bad strut? Also the left side is fine and doesn't make noise at all..

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping / Knocking Noise Coming From Suspension

2001 vr6 manual... I have a popping noise that comes from my suspension. it is in the front, and it has gradually gotten worse over the last month or so. It used to happen when i back out of my drive way only, but now it happens when accelerating from a stop, quickly braking or turning at low speeds. Recently its getting worse and i can start to feel it in my steering wheel sometimes. It doesn't feel like a wheel bearing. Is it bushings? Tie rod? CV Joints? Strut Mount?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Transmission Will Occasionally Not Shift Into 4th Gear

Got a 2001 Jetta 2L automatic 200k miles with gremlins. possibly multiple unrelated problems. First problem that presented is that the transmission will occasionally not shift into 4th gear. I discovered that if I stop the engine, then restart it, it will again return to normal operation, hence the thought that it is electrical. After a year or so of this, second problem pops up: the engine will die while the car is driving, or some times idling at a light. I've also noticed that the interior lights flicker somewhat in intensity when on and the engine is operating, so there could definitely be a grounding issue somewhere. I have heard that the ECU/ECM connectors could become corroded, but haven't yet dug into it to look. Any guesses as to where to begin?
