Every time I speed up or slow down my ABS, TC and parking brake lights turn on and my car beeps at me. I'm assuming that I have a wheel speed sensor going out. But when I check the codes there is nothing and the check engine light never turns on, so how do you tell which one to replace? Or is my problem something different? I drive a 1999.5 vr6 Jetta.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2000 VW Jetta GL. A few weeks ago I noticed my charging light come on followed by abs and airbag lights. Which would mean that the alternator is not charging the battery. However I kept on driving and this light would go off. However when I hit a bump on the road this light goes off meaning that the battery is being charged by the alternator. I recently installed a sound system in the vehicle which worked without problems for a few weeks before I started having this problem. Since then I have changed the alternator, battery and taken out the sound system. I now have a 125 amp alternator instead of a 90 amp alternator. The charge light doesn't come on anymore after startup but the abs, airbag and emergency brake light with a beep is now occurring.

Background: Purchased this car couple months ago. Did a bunch of maintenance, including rear pads/rotors, fronts still good. Also decide to bleed the system while I had the car on jacks. Followed Bentley procedure as I have previously, using a pressure bleeder making sure to stay at 12 psi and kept the reservoir topped up at all times. First I did the clutch slave, brakes and last I did VAG com procedure to bleed the ABS unit. Upon completion pedal felt good and I took it for drive ..
Brakes worked fine under normal braking force but when the car was slowing down and coasting to a stop with my foot on the brake (light pressure) the ABS engaged briefly(speed around 10-15km /h) right before the car came to a stop. Assumed maybe air in the system so re-bleed the ABS pump again .. Nothing same ABS kicks in right before stopping .. Cleaned all speed sensors and rings .. Nothing, still happening.
Recap:
-ABS does not engage under regular braking force, brakes work fine.
-ABS engages under light braking pressure right before complete stop. (ie parking car or pulling into a drive way)
So my question is, is it possible an ABS sensor out of the 4 is causing this? How about the brake switch? I know that on older VWs used to be 2 pin but this one is 4. Is it possible there is ABS pump problem? Air still in the system? Master cylinder?
A sort of honking/grinding noise, like really loud squealing brakes - but a lower sound, when at low speed, with the wheel turned right for maximum turning. Generally located in the front end.
It occurs consistently when I am returning home, slowing to a stop to pull around a curve in the road, right before I back into my driveway. It occurs with the clutch in or out, and with the brakes on or not. I tried doing slow sharp turns in a parking lot and I can't replicate it there.
It's happened for almost as long as I've had the car, and there's only about 1300km on it now. I've just been trying to track it down to replicate for the dealer. Taking it to the dealer is obviously my next step. I think I'm going to have to take a tech for a ride to my house to replicate it!
Car is completely stock so far.
I replaced both rear calipers, rotors, pads, parking brake cables and it still sticks once in a while. I have played with the adjustment on the console many times, but to no avail. I have to crawl under the back and press the link up to unlock the parking brake. It's only about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch at most. Is there some type of spring I can use so it retracts all the time? I have seen Toyota's with them.

What I wanted to know is, do I need a cable for each side or is there only one cable?
So the switch is pretty basic, only on or off! ahha. Is there some other way to just have everything but the headlights running? aka parking lights?
View 3 RepliesI was down at H20i this past weekend and had my window cracked and a truck splashed water into my car all over my dash. Then all my lights started flickering. So I let it air out for about 2hrs and cleaned it all up and the problem went away expect the parking brake light flickered for a bit then just stayed on and kept binging at me and says to release the parking brake. So when I got home I let it air out all night and let my windows down and put my car in the sun all day today. Parking brake light is still on.
View 6 RepliesSo I got my Haldex fluid and DSG fluid changed two weeks ago. When I picked the car up I noticed a vibration when I was making tight turns. Last week I called the dealer and told them. They said to drive it a bit more to see if it works it self out. But now after getting back from H2Oi, it still is doing it but not as bad.
Its a vibration you can feel and a rumble you can hear when making a tight turn at slow speed. Like turning into a parking space or turning at a stop sign. What would this be? I searched but couldn't find an exact answer.
I have an 03 JETTA TDI 5 SPEED WAGON with 216 on it. The parking brake alarm recently came on for no reason (as did the warning light) As soon as you move 50' it starts and wont stop until you stop the vehicle. I pulled the center console, unplugged the switch and it still did it. I jumped the 2 wires together and it still did it! I cut the wires at the point where they disappeared into the larger harness, it still did it!!! Why this is happening and if there is something besides the switch at the park brake lever that make the alarm go off?

If I take it apart and manually compress the piston with that rotating clamp that Autozone lent me I can put it back together and use it 2 or 3 times and then it's too tight and I have to take it all apart again. I don't have the cable hooked up, I just move the lever with my hand or a screwdriver.
I'm a little irritated cause I replaced this caliper last year. I remember finding a good description of how this device worked and now I can't find it again.
I recently bought a used '07 vw rabbit, and today when I tried to use my parking lights, I could not find any way to turn them on. I called the dealer later, and was told the rabbit does not have "parking lights". What should I use when I want to pull off the roadway briefly, etc. and why did they not put parking lights on this car? Is this a new trend?

View 2 RepliesI have to pull up really hard to get the parking brake to hold. If I'm on a hill forget it, I yank up really hard and then leave it in gear just in case. I have installed new cables and pads. I have also have the lever adjusted so it starts to catch when you pull it up about 2-3 inches. I've never driven another mk4 so I don't have any other reference to how well the parking brake should hold but I would think that I wouldn't have to pull up this hard to get it to habe any real holding power.
Any other vehicle I've driven with a hand brake I could easily lock up the rear tires. I'm lucky to get mine to lock while pulling so hard I think I'm going to break something. I've searched around and have only come up with threads about replacing cables and adjusting the lever. I couldn't find anything like the problem I'm having. Is this normal operation for a mk4 or is there something wrong with my calipers that needs to be addressed? My regular brakes work fine and the parking brake arms on the calipers allear to be functioning properly. They contract then spring back on their own
Recently a couple issues have started with my car, and I'm wondering if they are known.
1) The footwell lights will sporadically switch to full bright for a few seconds. This is really annoying, especially when driving at night.
2) The wiper speed will occasionally slow down, and I'll have to turn them off and on again to fix them. (note, I mean the actually speed of the swipe, not the delay. on the normal speed, not fast, not intermittent, the wipers will physically slow down).
Both are annoying, and I'm hoping they aren't indicative of a larger problem.
Leaving parking lights on. How long will it take to drain the battery enought that you cant start the car? Is there any type of auto-shut off in there?
Here is why I am asking:
It recently snowed up here in NY and I park on the street. I was thinking about leaving my parking lights on overnight so nobody (namely a plow) mistook my car for a snow drift. For those who dont know, the parking lights are left on by simply turning on the headlights and removing the key.
I recently purchased my first car/jetta. When i switch the knob to turn on the instrument lights on my 2000 jetta the headlights don't come on. But when i turn the knob off the auto headlights turn on. Any insight on this? when i first got the car everything was working fine. It only started to happen after I replaced the radiator.

View 19 RepliesI own a 2004 Jeep Wrangler with the 4L engine. I am having stalling problems. It sometimes happens when I slow down at an intersection or turn into a parking place. Always at slow speeds. I have read Jeep forums on the Internet and apparently this is not a rare problem. I have tried a few suggestions like cleaning the air filter and cleaning the Idle Air Control valve but neither of those suggestions solved the problem. Also this stalling problem does not leave any code on the Jeep's computer system so a mechanic could diagnose it. I am worried that this stalling problem might cause a serious accident either on the road or while driving on a 4X4 road.
