My 2004 r32 has 160k miles, cam positioning lite wouldn't clear-outer (small) chain intermediate shaft gear just about worn completely out. Are timing specs for cams,crank, intermediate shaft available, also torque specs? Iread the 12v chain diy thread, but I doubt they are the same.

I took my PRIUS to the dealer this past week and had the Prius Intermediate Shaft Replacement Recall done.
It is an AWD model. My mother just purchased it used from a Lexus dealer last weekend. At freeway speeds, she noticed a shimmy, and she had one of her friends' husbands check the tires out (she's on a road trip and not near me or a Lexus dealer). He found that the tires are starting to delaminate in the front and thread is quite worn on the outer edges.
The vehicle has a warranty (30 days or 1500 miles) and of course Lexus is saying they will only pay for the front tires. (we don't know if that is the whole cause of the shimmy yet I might add). But to deal with the immediate problem, what is Lexus's recommendation regarding replacement of tires on an AWD 350? Do they really say it's ok to replace tires by axle? Because I know that can screw things up on some other cars. . .
I told her to read the owner's manual and see what it says on the matter.
Replaced the Intermediate Steering Shaft at 114,000 miles. Symptoms felt like power steering going out but no pump noise or low fluid. Steering became hard to turn and it sometimes felt like a tie rod was letting go.
Temporary resolution was to spray the two steering shaft joints with penetrating oil (PB Blaster). That freed them up pretty well. Then I ordered Dorman part 425361 (425-361) from Rock Auto. Simple enough job. Lots of good vids on YouTube.
I don't recommend spraying the steering shaft joints as preventative maintenance. Penetrating oil will get into the needle bearings and break down the bearing grease. That will cause the joints to fail over time.
Two side benefits, the truck steering is much smoother and small road bumps and potholes are much less noticeable. Feels like it was when new.
It appears the knock I heard isn't from the suspension, its from the intermediate steering shaft. You can actually feel it in the steering wheel. The vehicle is out of warranty. I still don't understand why toyota wont fix this since its a known flaw in the design of the car.

I am looking to replace the intermediate steering shaft as it making noise it seems they are common to this problem due to a weak U joint. The problem I have is I can track the correct part. Here is what I have research so far:
Have found this one 55351246AA but it says it will not fit.
Also found the Dorman 425-257 but it says is for 4WD but it reference to this OE part numbers: 55351208AA, 55351208AB, 55351246AA
Have try the Dodge parts website but that is even more confusing. I have already replace the ball joints, wheel bearings and inner and outer tie rods and this is the last part that needs to be replaced if I can track the correct one.
My Bridgestone Ecopias(Ep20s) have 26,000 miles on them and are wore on the outer edges. Both sides are worn. I heard this may be to under inflation. I go to Discount Tire and they set all my tires at 37psi. Is this too low. The door says 35 front and 33 rear. Do I need more air for them to wear evenly? Also I have ordered Michelin Energy Savers. Discount will set them at 37, or should I add more air so this type of wear does not happen? I plan on getting an alignment just in case, but really don't think I need one. There is no pull to either side and the wheel is straight.

View 1 RepliesOur 2012 Prius with now 17,000 miles in 8 months has developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially far to the right at low speeds.
The first time the dealer identified it as a failed intermediate shaft and replaced it under warranty. Shortly after we told them it was starting to make the noise again, but they claimed they couldn't replicate the sound and anything they heard was normal 'linkage' (whatever that is). Shortly thereafter the clunking progressed so we took it in for now the third time, and they confirmed the problem, spoke with Toyota who said we must have had a bad part, and replaced it again.
Can I re-use this shaft or is that ring around it no good. The ring is around where the bearing sits. It is a circumferential hump all the way around.

I had the outer wheel bearing completely shred yesterday, and I don't know if the threads were hurt yet as when I got home and the tow truck dropped it there, I didn't want to tear it apart. So I'm at work and would like to take a die home to chase the threads just in case.
Autozone's website has the spindle nut kit, but it shows:
Thread Size: 3/4-16 & M20-1.0
A machinist here tells me that they are not the same, so how do I know what I have?
I have a 2004 VW R32 lowered and all 4 of the tires wear down on the inside really fast. Camber kit? Which kit should I get?

View 14 RepliesSo I finally got a chance to pull the front wheels off the car yesterday and noticed that BOTH outer CV boots are ripped and there is grease everywhere. How long this has been going on for but I haven't noticed any grinding or popping noises yet so hopefully they're still good.
I've checked on ECS Tuning and they have replacement boots, OEM ones. I'm honestly really low on funds, and would like to opt for the cheaper ones but wondering if I will regret it,
Also, as far as replacing the boots go, I'm sure it's easiest just to remove both axles correct? Do I need any special tools for this job? Any DIYs? This is my daily so I will have to drive it like this for the time being although I really don't want to.?
my OEM Euro Golf R outer LED tail lights are a tad brighter than the inners. is this normal? I did not code these yet.
View 5 RepliesEver since I painted my car my outer door handles have not worked properly. Once you open the door using the inner door handle then the outer one works fine...lock the doors and the outer handle becomes almost useless. I say almost useless because if you kind of pull it just right it seems to catch and work. How to remedy it? Really tired of using this auto window roll down to reach in and open the door.
View 4 RepliesI'm scheduled for my first HPDE next week and I just discovered that the bushings on the front end links are worn. I don't notice any issue when taking curves and I'm asking due to the timeline of when the dealer will get the parts...it'll be cutting it close before the event.
View 3 Replies I decided to get an alignment (for the first time since I took delivery of the car). I noticed some unusual wear on the inner and outer tire. I will post a before and after pic of the alignment. As you can see they were unable to correct everything.
The shop says that the prius does not have any way to correct camber in the front nor was there any way to correct the toe in the rear.
I cannot think of anything that would have messed up the rear left. The shop was saying these repairs will need either a new control arm or strut.
What works best on the outer window trim and lower rocker panel chrome/stainless steel trim (unsure what it is)? This is an 04 treg, that has been trough two winters and will see many more. I need to keep her tip top! Seems like the trim is oxidizing.
View 4 RepliesSo my brake pads worn light came on recently on my 03 jetta...low and behold all 4 brake pads needed changing...funny though because upon buying pads with the sensor when I went to put new pads on the old ones didnt even have a sensor it was already cut at the harness and spliced together to keep the light off....so upon inspection one of the wires was black and the other copper....idk if one was supposed to be black or if its because its fried? Anyways i went as far up the wires as I could till they are harnessed in with the abs sensor wires...still one wire black....spliced together crimped and still the light comes and goes....I dont have access to the vcds or vagcom so can't turn it off that way..
View 2 RepliesIn late fall, I got a recall notice from VW for my 04 V6 Touareg and just got around to bringing it in to Leith VW (dealer I purchased from "new" with about 900 miles on it in May 2005 as one of the last '04s on the lot) in Cary today. Since it's at 18,900 miles, I had them do the scheduled 20k service, plus my state inspection was due so added that as well.
They just called to let me know that although they did pass the inspection for me, the car really needs 4 new tires because the tread depth is below marginal. Also, they said that they are not a dealer for that brand of tire so they cannot give me any kind of treadlife warranty prorating on the replacements; if I want to claim it, I need to go find a tire dealer somewhere.
What kind of BS is this? How could a dealer sell a new car with a tire on it that they aren't actually a dealer for? Did somebody pull a fast one on me by swapping out the tires for an old set laying around before I bought it?
