Golf V R32 :: Front Brake Discs Wear Out Differently

May 21, 2008

My R32 is ~5700 miles and today I realized that Front brake discs wear out differently. Left one is OK but right one is scratched more deep and different than the left one. So they are not equal.

Golf IV R32 :: Rear Brake Discs Don't Get Warm

I've noticed that my REAR BRAKE DISCS don't get warm (let alone HOT) to the touch after some seriously hard braking.

Obviously the front brake discs are proper hot, you wouldn't need to touch them to work that one out, just a quick splash of water on them would show you that..

But the REAR discs on my R32, I can touch them with my hand/finger, and they don't even feel remotely warm after some hardcore brake stops.

So I'm starting to think that my brakes aren't doing anything at all on the rear.

Saturn - Sl :: 2002 - Front Brake Rotor Has Unusual Wear

recently I replaced the front rotors and pads on my 02 Saturn SL2. I did this because there was a grinding sound coming from the front left wheel well and I had noticed a band around the rotor that looked gouged. All in all, about 30 minutes of work, following the Hanes manual. In the course of disassembling the front left caliper, I realized that the cause of the gouge in the rotor was from one of the tensioning clips on the caliper bracket. One of the flaps on the clip had bent back and was causing both the grinding sound and the gouge in the rotor. So naturally, I replaced all the tensioning clips as well. After putting everything back together, I took the car on a quick test drive around the block. The noise, while lessened, was still present. Furthermore, after I got to work this morning, I noticed that that there is the start of the same wear pattern on my brand new rotor.

What could be causing this problem to reassert itself?

Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: Front Brake Rotors Premature Wear

I have a 2014 Supercab Ecoboost F150, which has 37k KM on it (23k miles). I work at sea for 4 weeks on / 4 weeks off so the truck sits a fair bit. I had it in the dealer for scheduled servicing and they noticed the inside pads on both front brakes were wearing significantly more than the outside (4mm vs 7mm). The lube guy at the time had suggested sticking calipers and that they'd be warranty.

A few days later I brought the truck back in to have the brakes looked at and an unrelated warranty item done. They looked and said the calipers aren't sticking and the rotors are grooved and rusted, particularly the inside surface. They wanted to put new pads on and turn the rotors for 400 bucks.

I had a hard time believing it wasn't the calipers, and I was having a hard time getting a good explanation from the service writer of what was going on. So I took the truck back and pulled the pass side tire off in the driveway to take a good look.

As far as I can tell, the calipers are free. The slide pins are nicely lubed and are free, and the pads are free to move in the anti-rattle clips. I squeezed the piston back with a set of C clamps and it seemed to be good. Also, the pads are wearing more or less evenly (not tapered or anything), just the inside is worn significantly more than the outside.

So, rotors wearing out in 23k miles? They aren't really warped, just heavily grooved. My theory at this point is that the weeks the truck spends sitting allows too much corrosion to build up on the rotor, which is getting caught up and wearing down the pads and rotor. Maybe the outside of the rotor isn't nearly as bad because it gets hosed down and washed more frequently?

Inside rotor surface

Outside rotor surface

Inside pad surface.

I still have 7 months of bumper to bumper warranty. Ford says the only cover brakes if the damage is caused by a caliper, so I think I'm out of luck on that front.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Uneven Front Brake Wear / Caliper Sticking Slightly

2000 Ranger, see my sig.

Just had to swap out the pads on my truck yesterday. The pedal was pretty mushy and I was getting shaking in the steering wheel when the brakes got warm. Shaking wasn't all the time, only after they had been used quite a bit - say after city use and the brakes had to be applied suddenly. So I popped off the tires and swapped out the pads and replaced the brake fluid - flushed it.

On the driver side front, the pads barely had any real wear and the anti-rattle clip was all messed up. It was installed properly, but it looked like the pads had smashed into it. The rotor appeared to be warped, or at least out of round - but just barely. You could see it wobble slightly in one spot if you spun the hub with the caliper removed. The caliper itself was sticking slightly.

I didn't see any evidence of damage, the brakes flushed just fine although the fluid was incredibly dirty (because I haven't done it in a long while). On the passenger side front, the pads were worn down to the level I would have expected given the mileage. The wear was even.

My question ultimately is this - is the out of round hub the culprit here? Might there be something else going on like a caliper problem? Ultimately I plan on having the rotors surfaced - one of them certainly needs it and with new pads I might as well do it anyway.

Golf V R32 :: Excessive Tire Wear On The Front

Having issues with excessive front tire wear? I have had the alignment checked by two VW garages and a third party garage and all of them confirm that the alignment is good.

The VW garage also confirmed that as far as they can see there is no suspension issues, but the excessive wear on the front tires indicates that something is wrong.

I have owned the car since new in 2008 so know it has a clean history no accidents.

Both front tires look like this.....

Prius (2004-09) :: Front Discs Rubbing Sound Like Pads Worn Down?

This started recently and suddenly during our recent snow. It sounds like the pads have worn down. Only happens at very low speed, not immediately at the point where the disc brakes cut in (>7mph?). Apart from the sound, the braking action feels normal and it stops fine.

The pads were only replaced a few months ago. Done 106,000 miles now, and no more than 2,000 since pads replaced.

I had thought it might be some grit caught between disc and pads but it would have cleared by now and there are now obvious signs on the disc of anything.

What would I be best to remove the wheels and take a closer look. Also, is there a wear sensor on the pads?

97 4.0 ext. As the title says the right front pads wear more than the drivers side. Have replaced calipers pads and rotors during recent overhaul. Noticed increased brake dust on wheel on rf front. Could the metering valve under master cyl be the culprit. Abs and brake lights work as normal.

Passat (B5) :: Brake Wear Sensor Keeps Going Off?

My brake wear sensor keeps going off even though my brake pads are fine. I guess there is a short in the line somewhere. I know you can loop the indicator at the brake pad but if I have a short in the line this will not work I have had someone look for the short but after a couple hundred dollars they were not successful. Can you have the dealer turn off this indicator in the computer so it no longer reports the status of your brake pads?

Passat (B5) :: 2000 - Can't Get Brake Wear Icon To Go Away

On a 2000 Passat I have I could not get the brake pad wear icon to go away. I jumpered the wires at the plugs up near the wheel well behind the grommet and that did nothing. I can't imagine that the wires behind the body are broken/frayed as they are not exposed to anything that would cause them to break/fray.

Camry :: 2005 SE Gen 5.5 - Getting Squeak / Uneven Brake Pad Wear

2005 I4 SE Camry USA built. Got a squeak from the rears the other day and pulled the tires to check. Inside pads (ones against the caliper cylinder) on both rear wheels were at the metal but the outside pads were still not down to the little stripe down the middle of the pads, let alone the wear indicator clip. I pulled slide pins and there were not stuck. The calipers retracted very easily, so not gunked up or dragging. I ordered a new hardware kit with the new dust boots and rubber slide pin parts. I am using good Permatex disc brake grease. I am going to have to have the rotors turned, but aside from replacing the rubber parts the only other thing I can think of is slide pin replacement.

Camry :: Uneven Wear Between Outer And Inner Brake Pads

I just thought I'd mention this observed wear of brake pads...I just replaced all 4 up front after about 128k miles...

@ 114k miles it was observed that 1 of the 2 pads of each front wheel had worn significantly more than the other (the inner more than the outer pad IIRC)....my expert mechanic rotated the two and I got another 14k miles out of them...I could have gotten a LOT more had they been rotated @ 50-80k miles.

I don't know if this is extraordinary, or more typical than I'd have thought...or a function of (failing?) calipers, or just how these (MY) calipers work, or just my driving habits (though I've owned the car for only 30k of the 128k miles on the odometer)....but....

In my case the new pads will get a 50k mile inspection and possible rotation if there is uneven wear between outer and inner pads....

I'd recommend that pads be inspected for (uneven) wear at one of the scheduled tire rotations....rotating the pads isn't much of a job, but it might be something for you to consider to get the most miles from the pads (that and better braking too perhaps).

Pontiac - Bonneville :: 1999 - Excessive Brake Pad Wear

I replaced the front brake pads and rotors on a 99 Bonneville about a year ago. The outside pad on the passenger side has worn completely out and has ruined the rotor. The inside pad on the same side looks fresh. Everything on the driver's side looks good. What the heck happened? I am not an expert but I have replaced many of these GM brakes and have never seen this result.

Phaeton :: Erroneous Brake Pad Wear Light - Nothing Jammed Between Pad And Rotor

I am receiving an erroneous warning message about pad wear. I replaced pads and rotors (OEM) about 10K miles ago. I pulled both front wheels. The pads and rotors look great, as expected, and the sensors appear to fine as well, in place, wires all look good, etc.. Nothing was jammed between the pad and the rotor, no metal was touching the rotor, etc. My understanding is that there are no sensors on the rear, so that shouldn't be causing any issues.

Porsche :: Brake Rotor Wear And Wheel Nut Torque Consistency

I had a realization the other day, based on a Porsche 944, that the "set screw" holding brake rotors are more for the assembly process but are not actually what accounts for the fastening of the rotor on the hub. instead, the 130 Nm torque on the five wheel nuts that sandwich the rotor between the hub and wheel do this. If the torque on the nuts is uneven, but the assembly is otherwise secure, wouldn't one prediction of this be uneven brake rotor wear?

Passat (B5) :: Front Passenger Tire Is Getting Some Inner Wear On It

I notice that my front passenger tire is getting some inner wear on it. The tire doesn't even have 5k on it. I know I should get an alignment that's a must but is there something that might be wrong with it anyways since its just the front passenger?? Balljoint, tierod end and etc?? I don't really have a local auto shop that I trust 100% so I don't want them to be like, there is 3 balljoints out and etc. I had the inner tierods (both) and a few balljoints fixed last year and then got an alignment done. Any tips??

Lexus SC430 :: Chirping Sound As Slowed Down To A Stop - Brake Pad Wear

I have a 2002 sc430 with 120000 miles, great car no problems just maintenance. For the last couple of days I heard a chirping sound as I slowed down to a stop. The only thing I could think was the brakes, but I just changed the front and rear pads March 2011. So today I looked at the front brakes and saw the pads at about 50% and everything else looked good. Then went to the rear and saw something I thought was odd...take a look at the picture.... The last time I changed the pads I don't recall having this problem. See the red arrow, one of the pads is worn almost completely down and the circle shows a lip on both pads??? I checked the caliper pistons and they work fine, the pin that hold the pads is not bent and the clips are fine.
