Golf V R32 :: Loud Tire Roar Noise At Speed

May 2, 2009

The tire roar (not engine or wind noise) is unbelievably loud on my car. I drive a lot between San Diego and OC usually at 80+ and it is difficult to have a conversation on the phone and it is starting to drive me a little crazy. I have the all seasons on my car. I noticed a big difference on my S4 and my 550i when I changed tires to PS 2's from the stock Conti's.

Kia - Sportage :: 2007 - Loud Roar Noise Build Up When Gaining Speed

I was driving down the highway one morning, when the spare tire from a small truck in front of me falls off on the highway. I'm probably going between 40-50 mph, and I can't change lanes, so I hold my breath as I drive over it. I thought I had cleared it when I heard the tire hit my 2007 Kia Sportage somewhere around the backseat area. Kia continues to run fine, no fluids leaking, engine running normal, transmission running normal, etc. Our car has never been quiet on the inside, but we noticed that the road noise started to get louder and louder. We knew that it was getting time to replace our tires, so we figured that is why it was getting louder. I had the tires changed, but the noise was still there. And it gets louder.

But everything continues to run normally, and my mileage is not affected. But it gets louder. And louder. I thought maybe it cracked the muffler, but you don't hear noise on the outside, just the inside. I just passed my state emissions check, so that is ok. I haven't taken it to a mechanic because there hasn't seemed to be any other problem, other than it's just loud. The noise seems to build up as I am gaining speed, gets its loudest about 50 mph or so, and at speeds higher than that it goes down slightly. It doesn't coincide with the transmission shifting, and it shifts at the same RPMs it always has, no issues there. The noise seems to be coming from the back of the car.

Mazda - 626 :: 2002 - Loud Tire Noise Increases With Speed

I recently purchased new tires and rims for my Mazda 626 thinking it would get rid ot the loud tire noise (2 rims were bent). However, the noise still exists. I cannot seem top pin point the source of the noise but, it increases with speed.

Lexus GS 2006-11 :: 2010 GS350 AWD - Rear Inner Tire Cupping And Make Roar Noise

I have 2010 GS350 AWD. Tires are Dunlop and have 7000 miles on them and the car has 47k miles. The issue is the rear inner tire are cupping and make roar noise. Car is all stock. I have done alignment twice at the dealer. They are telling me everything is normal. I have personally inspected everything under the car and did not find anything abnormal, no blowing bushing, and no oil coming from struts. I have read there is no camber adjustment in the rear.

What could cause the gs350 AWD this cupping? Only in the rear? Would camber correct such problem?

Bmw - 328i :: Speed-dependent Road Noise / Mildly Pulsating Roar

1997 328i 5sp 295k miles

Speed-dependent road noise, mildly pulsating roar as though I were driving a truck, just keeps getting louder as the weeks go by. Completely independent of load. Accelerating, decelerating, coasting, disengaging clutch, has no affect on volume or pitch of noise. Volume and pitch increases with speed. At 20 mph it is noticeable. At 80 mph it is quite annoying. Seems completely independent of road surface.

Rear wheel bearings were replaced about 50k miles ago, and they feel fine.

Front wheel bearings feel perfectly tight.

Replaced all four tires with new Michelin Defenders. That eliminated a low speed whomp-whomp--whomp that turned out to be a cord separation in the front left tire, but otherwise had negligible impact on the road noise.

Changed fluid in transmission and rear end. No change at all in the noise.

I thought that the only thing that would be speed-dependent but load independent would be the driveshaft carrier bearing. I bought a new one, but when I put the car up and exposed the driveshaft, I found that the rear U-joint was bad. Didn't figure the U-joint was my noise, as that would be sensitive to load, but needed to fix it. U-joints are not serviceable so I ordered rebuilt driveshaft which came with a new carrier bearing. Put that in today. Absolutely no change in the noise.

Tranny tail shaft bearing felt tight when I was replacing driveshaft, and no sign of oil leak from there.

All four rear CV joints feel tight, and in any event, noise from those would be load-dependent.

I have been searching the web, and rear shock mounts are often mentioned as possible suspects for road noise, but people rarely post what their problem turned out to be, and I would think that noise from failed shock mounts would be very road surface dependent.

Golf/GTI VI :: Loud Tire Noise On Highway Under Acceleration

Blizzak WS70s? I just got them from a friend and they make a "whiny" noise on the highway under acceleration, seems to get higher pitched the more I accelerate. The sound seems to change under different pavement types so thats why I assume its just a loud tire.

Golf IV R32 :: Loud Pop Noise (sound Of Blown Tire) When Driving At 70 Mph On Freeway

I was driving on the freeway(70mph), when a loud pop noise (sound of a blown tire.) Felt like a wheel bearing seized up then felt rough on the road. Got off the freeway and everything looked normal from the outside. No smell/smoke. While driving home on the back roads, i was hearing a rattle from the trunk area.

Lifted the car and noticed a little bit of fluid on the front of the differential. Didn't find any leaks or puddles. Took the fuse out for the haldex, and drove it around, still feels the same but still hear the rattle. Hoping its not the differential but haven't drained any fluid yet.

Ok, well never mind. brake system locked up on me.

Lexus GX 2004-09 :: Loud Roar On Left Side

I am trying to find out what's going on with my GX470. It's a 2003 and I just hit 125,000 miles. Over the past couple of months it has developed a loud roar on the left side that gets louder as I pick up speed. The kicker is that it doesn't do it what so ever when turning right? Where to start???

Prius (2010-12) :: Very Loud Noise At 333 - Bad Wheel Bearing Or Just Tire Noise?

My girlfriend and I just bought a 2011 a few weeks ago. We test drove it a couple times ourselves, and had our mechanic take a look at it and drive it also. Everything looked and sounded good. Not sure how much it matters, but it's a Certified Used as well.

A couple days ago, returning from a 45-minute drive which included some short stretches of gravel road, I noticed an oscillating sound. It's definitely not a noise that was there when we bought the car. Unfortunately, my cell is apparently bad at capturing audio, so hopefully my description will be enough.

The noise is very faint, almost inaudible, at low speeds. Between 30 and 35 mph it gets much louder, peaking at about 33. There's some vibration through the accelerator pedal also. Above 35, it fades pretty quickly and I can't really hear it at 50. The sound itself is 3 beats on, 1 beat off, about every second. There's a slight difference in pitch between each beat.

If that isn't enough to go on, let me know and I'll give the recording another shot and upload it if the noise is audible.

Prius (Gen 2) :: 2007 - Loud Tire Noise?

My 07 prius makes REALLY LOUD TIRE NOISES. It sounds like I have mud-terrain tires on my car. I know I need a alignment because the tires are cupping. Would this cure the irregular tire noise?

The tires are not the stock Goodyear Integrity(?) but aftermarket. I can't recall off the top of my head but I know when I first got them they never made close to this much noise.

Camry 2012+ :: Tire Screeching Noise At Low Speed

Tire screeching noise (the same noise you might hear when traveling at a high rate of speed while turning; as if it's losing grip) when making U-turns or 70-90 degree turns? I notice this every time I make a U-turn or when I'm in parking lots where a higher radius of turning is involved; both at low speeds (probably around 5 mph)

Tires are the Michelins that come from Toyota. Thread is still at least 90% according to my previous service record about 4 months ago and I don't see any abnormal wear on the tires themselves. On another note, I have these same tires on a 2010 Sienna and they do not make any of the noises as stated above.

My car is wearing the inner most tread only front and rear tires. And I am getting tire noise that increase with speed - it's annoying to say the least.

My mechanic says this is normal - yeah right!

Civic - Honda :: Loud At Certain Speeds - Tire Or Axle / Bearing Noise?

I have a 2010 Honda Civic with 73K miles. I've noticed that the car can get loud when driving .

It has 4 Michelin Primacy tires from Costco put on at 45K. Not sure when the noise started, but now with my iphone I run a sound meter app and the sound level is 80 - 95db . Yeah, it's not calibrated, but my wife's Lexus reads about 75db worst case. so even just relative to the lexus, it's loud.

The noise is loudest (95db)at around 57MPH and some other speeds like 47, 67 also. Other speeds in between these, it gets down to 80db.

There's NO vibration at any speeds (so tires are balanced?)There's NO pull to either side when driving There's NO pull to either side when brakingThere's NO change in the sound level when putting the transmission in neutral (so it's not a trans issue?)There's NO change in the sound level when the engine is idling at the speeds (so the sound is not tied to RPM level)There's NO discernible change in the sound level on different roads (so 57 MPH is loud on most any road).The tires are wearing normallyRotating the tires had no change in the sound level

What's left? Tires and axle / bearings? Is there anything I can do to look for / test for to figure out the issue, short of a new set of tires? I guess I'll have a mechanic look at the bearings?

Is tire noise usually tied to road speed in that pattern of getting louder at a certain speed, getting quieter above and below that speed, then get louder again at another certain speed.

Subaru - Impreza :: Rotational Noise In Front Right Tire Area Noticeable At 35 Mph And Syncs With Speed Of Wheel

I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza with 23,500 miles on it; all service done at dealer, by the book. Brought car in at 22,212 miles for rotational noise in front right tire area that becomes noticeable at 35 mph and syncs with speed of wheel (especially annoying at highway speeds). tires were at 6/32, inside edge 'slightly chopped'. Alignment was done; right rear toe out of adjustment. the noise remained.

returned to dealer; manager took a ride with, said he heard the noise, said tires (the originals) might be made of softer rubber and wear faster, or it might be a wheel bearing starting to go. he did a visual check of tires and measured tread. they replaced the right bearing. Noise still there.

Returned to dealer, they road tested , heard the noise, ran car on lift and 'traced to center of transmission', ordered a Subaru remanufactured transmission and installed it. the noise remains . I was especially shocked at replacement of transmission! (car is still under warranty so it's not costing me anything but grief and aggravation at no resolution).

I have always felt the problem is at the wheel, but i'm no mechanic. they are the experts. Could it be a problem with defective brake parts that somehow are rubbing or if the lugs are tightened too far could that bend something. I am not a street racer and I drive like I plan to keep the car for a long time!

When I called (after the transmission replacement) about the driver one-touch window not working, the desk guy told me how to reset it (very easy) and said that they'd forgotten to do that. I told him that the noise is still there and he said "well, it could be coming from the roof rack" (I have non-Subaru cross bars on the roof rack and a fairing. I thought that comment was lame as the crossbars have been on since 2013 and I've heard no rotational noise from them. However, to 'rule out', I will remove them and take a drive.

I told desk guy I was going to drive the car for a week or so because conditions have not been optimal with bumpy roads and weather to be completely certain. several days have passed since that conversation; the noise is still there and once I've driven without the crossbars on, the car is going back.I am hoping for feedback on what to tell them to check next.

Prius (2004-09) :: Noise Like A Roar Or Drone At Higher Speeds

I have a 2007 Prius (now has 220K + miles) I bought used about 2 years ago with 150K miles. I finally got used to the car sounds so this is something new, or rather it's becoming louder and enough for me to question it. The car is still quiet at low speeds but this sounds like something related to how fast the car is rolling, not the engine acceleration. It doesn't sound like it's coming from the wheels. It's a low roar like sound, not high pitched and it sounds like it's coming from under the middle to front of the car as if related to perhaps the drive train. If I am up to 40-50 mph and just rolling (foot off the gas) down a long hill, the sound is there. It gets louder the faster I go. Could it be a transmission sound? I've always had manuals so this is my first automatic transmission car.
