2000 Lincoln ls v8 ... I just replaced degas bottle and cap. I changed because it was leaking antifreeze. Now even with new bottle after I turn car off antifreeze is still coming through degas bottle cap. I was wondering if my problem could be my water pump going bad causing the fluid to boil after engine is shut and building pressure high enough to push through cap?
View 2 RepliesI have a Hyundai Elantra 2001 that I just bought off someone. I've had the car maybe 2 weeks, I changed the radiator because it overheated last week. Then, I found out the valve cover was cracked in four places, I replaced those too... I bought and installed a new thermostat, and I thought that would be the end of overheating... I was wrong, last night I felt like I smelled antifreeze strongly, so I parked it and this morning before heading home from work, I checked the radiator, it was empty. I filled it with antifreeze, and headed home, 20 minutes later, I parked on my drive and see that I have a huge leak... and it's antifreeze.
So, seems like I had left the cap open somehow, I didn't close it all the way. That was understandable, so I put some more coolant in it, and took off in the afternoon - 20 minutes into my drive, it starts slowly overheating, I see the gauge going up so I pull over, as soon as I do the car shuts off. I took the keys off the ignition and opened the hood. Now, there's smoke coming off the engine (smoke came from under the valve covers). I gave it 20 minutes rest at least, then added water in the radiator. Turned it on and it worked ok for about 5 minutes, I drove 2 hours to get it home at this rate, stopping every so often. Then, got it home and parked it.
I have 3400 engine in 2000 alero (V6 of course). Been having problem with my antifreeze leaking, So I assume the lower intake gasket again(which I have already replace 6 years ago with no problem) but this time after I replace it I notice coffee color oil (antifreeze getting in the oil). So figure I must have done something wrong so I replace the lower intake gasket again making sure I tighten everything with correct torgue. Still the same problem, if not worst. I took the front valve cover off (because I didn't see any coffee color from the back valve cover last time) to see if I can see where the antifreeze is coming from, I can see the the coffee color oozing on the top of the 2 center pushrods and rockers not quite from the gaskets itself (from what I can see) and white steam coming valley (or between the two heads)and notice bubbling on the bottom (not sure if that is normal). Not really into replacing the head gasket, but before I do, I want to make sure first.
View 1 RepliesOk I have a friend with this car and said it kept over heating. I went and looked at it and found the source of the leak. It's right after the heater core. The hose comes out and into the engine. Where the hose slides onto the engine has a leak . It looks like the piece can unscrew and be replaced but I don't know what it's called.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2002 Lincoln LS 3.9L. Intermittently the temp. gauge will go up near hot, the fan will come on and gauge will drop back to normal. Car will go into limp mode when this happens. Fan and thermostat were replaced several months ago to eliminate this problem but it is back. Mechanic had trouble getting air out of the cooling system at the time.
View 2 RepliesWe were driving home yesterday and all of the sudden the car started to over heat and we could smell antifreeze. We turned the ac off and put more water in it. Today we just had to make a short trip somewhere (we were planning on having it looked at first thing Monday morning). The temperature gauge never showed it overheating but as we pulled into our driveway we heard a knocking sound and it just shut off. Iit may just be a leak and it caused the car to over heat??
View 19 RepliesMy daughter has a dodge stratus 2001 with about 150,000 miles she has had it for about 2 years. She has had it over heat a couple of times and has had it repaired simply fixing a radiator hose. It overheated again and it was almost empty of antifreeze. She has been filling up and checking the radiator level and fills it as needed, which could be daily or now only weekly. She took it to a mechanic who thought it was a blown valve-cover gasket and basically said the car repair would be more than the car is worth. I have a feeling the car did not get really checked out. She didn't really know this guy and took it there because it was close to her. She is still driving it, but only short distances and always stops before it over heats. She really cannot afford another car for a least another year.
View 4 RepliesNo white smoke, no water in the oil. I think the antifreeze is not circulating. thermostat? plugged radiator? faulty water pump? air blocked? I have had heat in the car when the gauge is on "H" and then cool air when in the same place. Have loosened the radiator cap and the engine appeared to cool off quickly then when it got up on "H" again opening the radiator cap just to relieve pressure did nothing.
The next time i let it idle and it started to come down, then accelerated to 2000 rpm and it cooled quickly. The next time repeated this same type of thing and did no good. Next time the gauge said "H" i kept moving and the heater blew hot air for 4 miles then it blew cold air?Start with a thermostat? Try bleeding the heater? replace radiator? take a compression test?
My granddaughter's 1999 Pontiac Grand Am is overheating & blowing the antifreeze. Radiator was checked out OK, engine was replaced with 69000 miles, and check out OK - still overheating.
View 2 RepliesMy 99' Venture is leaking antifreeze and was overheating. Ok, so I figure it's something as simple as replace the radiator cap or something. My mechanic says it looks like my manifold gasket is due to be changed AGAIN. If I had one going into the other then I could see why we're talking oil when I'm talking antifreeze. I parked the car cause I have a second car. So the Van sits for 3 months and leaks into the pan I put to protect my driveway.
I could probably have filled a quart container with the puddle created. It looks Orange so yes it's antifreeze and yes it's SLIGHTLY milky when you shake it around. It doesn't show any sign of oil. BUT when I check the oil on the dipstick it's perfectly fine. The car wouldn't start so you'd say jump it right? Did that and nothing, bought a brand new battery still nothing. So I had it towed to a Mechanic. If he can't find it I'm going to plan B, let the dealer diagnose it, get a quote and take it from there.
I have a 2001 F250 with the 5.4l. I got home today and a lot of steam was coming from under the hood. I couldn't see where it was coming from. I see a reflection on top of the engine near the intake manifold. The truck is not overheating and the heater is working great. I changed the thermostat several months ago. What the issue may be. I checked the dip stick and not visible signs of water in the oil. What this could be? Is there something besides the visible thermostat housing that may have blown a gasket?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2000 suburban and it's leaking anti freeze but not going on the ground not sure where the leaking anti freeze is going to. it started out with no heat I, with my dad replace the cabin filters and got front heat back but after awhile I lost heat only in the front I have rear heat. not sure what the problem is? I am afraid to take it to a dealer and get scammed. it's not over heating or getting hot, but in the winter when it first started it i doled hard and it sounded like something was wrong with the lifter?
View 6 RepliesRadiator replaced 2 yrs. ago - required major rust cleanout; reservoir replaced shortly thereafter. Recently engine always hot, antifreeze disappearing, reservoir always looks rusty, nothing much coming out underneath, mechanic pressure tested and couldn't find a leak, told to watch for antifreeze in oil, none apparent. Now suddenly car ran hot, antifreeze came out of reservoir, cap replaced, still couldn't find leak. Today said head gasket blown. Repair head gasket, but can't guarantee wouldn't still have radiator problems. Suggested could try Blue Devil head gasket repair but may not work.
Is it worth :
(a) trying the Blue Devil;
(b) repairing the head gasket?
Or will I still have major repair needs with radiator etc.? I really can't afford even a cheap replacement car.
Last thursday night my wife said she had no heat in her car (03 gx470). I didn't know what to do so on Friday I did some research at work. On Friday my wife drove the car to work and back. Before she left work I asked her to look at the temp gauge and she never noticed it going over normal temp. On Saturday morning, I checked the radiator and it was practically empty so I drove it 3 miles to a shop to have them diagnose the leak problem. while in front of the shop I noticed antifreeze leaking from the radiator so I drove the truck home without them doing anything. Temp gauge never surpassed the middle.
I drove the truck home with the intention of replacing the radiator but I can't get the part until tomorrow (Monday) so to save time, I drained the radiator and pulled it out. I got less than 1/2 gallon from draining it. The coloring was red and green, which made me think tranny fluid and coolant but it wasn't milky and as I thought about it I recall when i did the 90k service with my bro (former toyo mech) the blocks where never drained so I'm guessing that I absent mindedly mixed green prestone with toyo coolant. Probably the reason my radiator is leaking?
After taking the radiator out, I didn't drain the coolant from the block valves, but I think it would be good to do that just to get an idea of whether or not its empty.
This morning i was thinking i should do a full flush after i replace the radiator, but since it would be impossible to open the valve on one side perhaps a flush isn't the right thing to do. Not sure if I should do a tranny dump and fill.
A retired friend of mine has a 1995 Buick Century with a busted head gasket. Oil is leaking and mixing with the antifreeze. It has roughly 140,000 miles. At the moment he does take it on short trips around the neighborhood.
He has maintained it religiously. It has new brakes, etc. And two years ago he had a rebuilt transmission installed. He still likes the car. And aside from the head gasket everything else runs well on it. Would it be worth fixing? Installing a rebuilt engine?
Is it normal for a small amount of antifreeze to leak out of the small hole on top of my Jaz overflow tank? This is on a 73 Chevy small block.

I looked under the hood and could see a steady leak way down on the bottom driver's side of my engine. What's the problem and how can I fix it? No matter what, getting rid of this car is not an option.
View 11 RepliesMy daughter's 2003 Dodge Neon overheated. We tried to add antifreeze to the reservoir but it leaked out from the reservoir. Once the car cooled down we were able to drive it to Firestone. They replaced the reservoir, thermostat, radiator cap, and flushed the radiator and replaced coolant. The next week the car overheated again. This time we put water in the (new) reservoir and it leaked again. The mechanics tell me this is how those reservoirs are made. Is this true?
View 6 RepliesI have an 08 Explorer with the 4.6v8. I've noticed the clutch fan on at start up the last few days. Check anti freeze and I was empty in the reserve. While filling the reserve there is a steady drip from the passenger side but I can not see it. It's trickling down the radiator but can't see from where. Is there a common hose, sensor or crack in reserve tank I should be looking for? Car hasn't overheated as of yet. It leaks with no pressure in radiator as well as with.

2010 MKVI GTI ... Woke up this morning and there was a puddle under my car. Reservoir was completely empty. I jacked it up and got a look under while running some coolant through and think I found the leak.
What this is, and if it's leaking as it appears to be and if a choad can fix it, or if a certified mechanic must be engaged.
It seems to be dripping all along this clam shell along these star nuts.
