At low speed braking or before it comes to a full stop. I'm guessing the ABS but would like a 2nd opinion from others. If it's the ABS, is the fix something that can be done DIY?
View 5 RepliesI bought 09 GX-470 4K miles ago..has 50K on it. Ran perfect when we bought it. wife said it started doing it 1 week later. I drove it and felt like warped rotors to me. replaced front rotors and pads with cheap wearever brand...I Know...I was sort of trouble shooting..did nothing ...did the back rotors and pads and seemed to fix it..did proper bed-in of new parts but, never checked at speeds above 55mph. recent trip got us up to speeds above 55... at these faster speeds when brakes are applied we get a nasty wheel wobble and a pulsing pedal...braking below 55 it feels fine.. thought's ?? last car was a 4runner which has the the same rotors and pads and never had a problem...could it be ABS ?? should I go with new oem rotors and pads ?

View 14 RepliesMy moms GX 470 squeaks a lot at lower speeds and when pressing on the brakes. She's taken it to the repair shop twice, they said they tried replacing the brakes and they were still squeaking. It has to be something around the wheels cause thats where the sound is coming from.
View 10 RepliesMy 2006 AWD RX330 rotors were starting to get warped so I changed them out along with new pads. I put new rotors in the front and new pads all around. Everything went smoothly other than getting the bottom rear slider pins to go back in easily.
Well it's been a week now and I noticed that if I press on the brakes at low speeds say 20-30 mph with a decent amount of pressure nothing too crazy there is a rubbing/pulsing noise right before i stop completely. It doesn't happen right when I apply the brake but right before the stop. It kind of sounds like the ABS is kicking in but i don't feel it in the pedal like you do for ABS or I don't hear the electrical noise you hear from ABS.
I ask because my father's 08 Avalon is pulsing during braking at highway speeds but only sometimes. When it does it we can feel it in the steering wheel. I suspected maybe one of the caliper pins was seizing. So I pulled the front wheels. The pads and rotors look great. I removed the pins, cleaned and greased them. On the test drive it pulsed two times for me but was totally smooth on the rest of the drive.
View 6 RepliesOur gen 1 has developed a (currently minor) noise issue when braking. I'd like to sort it out before it becomes serious.
The brakes are still strong, and the regenerative system appears to be working. When the brakes are applied (even gently) there is a pulsing raspy sound, seems like it is coming from the front, driver's side. It is more rapid at higher speeds, and louder during rapid deceleration. I guess I'd call it 'grinding', although this is much less unpleasant than the classic 'grinding brakes' I've heard on other cars.
In any other car I would figure a warped rotor or worn out brake pad. But I had imagined that the regenerative system handled light braking, and conventional brakes took over beyond a certain threshold. Now I'm hoping they work in tandem, even on gentle braking and this is just a boring, simple pad issue.
The front brakes are pulsing (slightly, enough to spill my coffee when they line up together) with each rotation. I can't tell if they're warped, or if they have a rough patch on each disc.
View 9 RepliesI have a 2009 Ford Focus and have been having a problem with the brakes. When I hit the brakes at any speed there is a feeling of pulsing as I slow down. It is proportional to the speed I am going. It feels like there is an unevenness to the rotor or brake drum that makes one spot on either of those hit the brake pad/shoe more severely than the rest of the pad/shoe and thus I slow down more during that one spot. Maybe the best way to describe the feeling is like this: While the brake pedal is pressed down it feels like I am slowly pulsing the pedal even though the pedal is steadily pressed down. This pulsing feeling slows down as I slow down until I stop. What might cause this?
View 3 RepliesMy 1998 Forester suddenly began pulsing / crunching sound, from the front brakes. I had just performed full brake inspection 2 weeks before. So I removed the ABS fuse (20 amp), and the problem disappeared. Of course the ABS light is also on now, but I can drive the car. I disconnected the 4 wheel sensors from the car harness, connected an oscilloscope to each, and spun the wheels pretty fast. I get 150 MV peak-to-peak from each sensor. Must I replace the "tone rings", or just wire-brush them? Replacing the rings are a BIG job, and the wheel bearings & seals must be replaced, since they don't survive pulling out the axles from the steering knuckle (front), or strut assembly (rear).
View 3 RepliesI have a 1999 Subaru Impreza Wagon that I have owned for about 2.5 years, and I love it. I travel for work and I use rental cars alot. I have noticed in the past year that my brakes feel softer than most cars I drive, but I figure.. they are new cars, and my car is pretty old.
In the past 2-3 months I have notices a pulsing in my brakes...it sounds/feels kinda like the ABS, but I was thinking it would be worth getting my brakes inspected soon.
Then this past week, I totally blew a brake line when I was driving.
The car has about 140,000 miles on it and the mechanic says a brake line alone may not be related to the pulsing sounds...because brake lines usually go because of rust....
So...thoughts on things I should be looking at? What could the pulsing be a symptom of?
if one brake line blew, and it is rust, is the other one not far behind? (this was a new england car up until 2 years ago)
It's a farm truck, lumber getter trailer puller. Not driven often, after sitting for awhile the brakes seem to be pulsing in front like antilock, as if braking on ice. I checked both front caliper springs or plunger slides and they are free not froze up.
View 1 RepliesI've had my 07 HD F150 into the dealer a few times for this issue and they have not been able to repair it. When I use the brakes especially at higher speeds you can feel them turning like a warped rotor, sometimes it will make the steering wheel shake. It does it with both my summer tires (22") and my winter tires (17"). Even at slow speeds you can feel it.
The dealer keeps checking and says that the fronts are fine, last time they machined the rear rotors and said it was fixed. To me the fronts look pretty grooved but they keep saying they are fine. Which didn't make sense to me. The truck stops well and has good feel and power but I get this warped rotor feeling. Is the dealer missing something?
This is a lengthy explanation. Car has 135K on it currently. Had the transmission flushed and water pump replaced about 5K miles or so ago. The Lexus trio of lights came on about 2K miles later and I noticed a loss of power. It's like I'm cruising along and the sensation is that of a manual transmission car being in 5th gear at 20 and punching it; that lack of power that borders on the car dying but it never does. It just sputters along a little and then all is fine. No abrupt shifts, just like it's in too high of a gear and I've caught it off guard with my throttle request.
Had the codes checked, multiple misfires detected. Great, so I take it to the mechanic I use and they hooked it up to the computer and basically I need a tuneup, all the plugs and wires and boots need to be replaced. I don't know how many horsepower I was down but it was definitely noticeable and the idle would bounce between 750 and 1K RPM without fail. I couldn't leave it with them all day that day as I had a job a couple hours away and figured it had been fine up to then and it would be ok for four more hours. Wrong. About an hour into my trip, the check engine light, which was on, began blinking, which I was told by the mechanic is a bad sign and that something is seriously wrong. Power is way down, the engine is obviously suffering, it's rough and choppy, probably half power, couldn't go more than 30mph.
And it was accompanied by this pulsing noise in the rear of the car, beneath the rear seat If I had to guess a location. It wasn't a grinding noise, more whiney but not loud and it was in a constant rhythm. I pulled over immediately and tried to make arrangements for transportation. There wasn't a rental car place in the town I pulled over in, but there was a place the next town up. I get in the car and start it up and the trio of lights are still on but the check engine is not blinking and the pulsing is gone as is the car struggling to breathe. It's not great, but it's back to the way it was before and highway speeds are possible, etc. When I got back, I had the tune up and the catalytic converter and engine manifold gaskets replaced. It runs like a dream. My question is; what could make it run so terribly and cause that pulsing sound and vibration, that would somehow disappear by stopping and starting the car?
Ever since the day I bought the car, it has had a highway speed pulsing vibration. This vibration manifests once you cross about 90kph, and pulses like a sine wave.
Think of it like this - OOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOO - where big O's are vibration and little o's are absence of vibration.
I have had the wheels and tires rebalanced several times on various machines over the years in attempts to rid myself of it. The original owner had theorized that the car was so heavy and had sat on its aftermarket rims in one spot for so long that the wheels had bent, which does not appear to be the case. The dealer has experienced the symptoms but cannot find a cause...though I fear they are less knowledgeable about the car than I am. I note that several people on the forum have had vibration issues due to drive shaft bushing failures...but in skimming the relevant threads, none of those people characterized it as a pulsation OR a constant issue that I saw.
I wouldn't say the pulsing was fast...think 4-5 seconds of vibration and then 4-5 seconds of peace.
Thought it was another AC flap that is playing up but it was the small plastic flap next to the tyre that was giving me the headache.
Still, could not find the rattle at the rear which i think is caused by the underfloor storage compartments. Thats for another day.
My wife just purchased an 04 w/27k miles in superb condition two months ago. This is a California car that had no mountain or winter weather service.
We live in Colorado & do a lot of mountain driving. At speeds above 65mph going down hill the steering wheel slightly vibrates or shimmies under heavy braking. The car is always heavily loaded.
Original brakes w/ well over 50% lining. I have not put a dial indicator on the disc surfaces.
CV joint boots are tight & no grease leakage.
Tires are wearing perfectly, so I do not think it is an alignment issue.
My 2004 VW Jetta TDI has a pulsing sensation at 2000 and 2500 rpm. It is a manual transmission. We've recently replaced the clutch/flywheel and the fuel filter. The problem has been progressively getting more common. Injectors, turbo, fuel filter problems?

View 1 RepliesI have a clunking sound coming from the back end. It is most noticeable at lower speeds going over bumps. I can also make the clunk happen by grabbing the top of the right rear tire and rocking it. I can feel something moving while I am doing this, but I can't pinpoint it. The bushings seem to be in good condition. The left rear wheel bearing was replaced recently. I also have an intermittent brake pulsation which feels like a warped rotor. I don't think it is actually the rotor, because it doesn't happen every time I apply the brakes. I believe that these two things are related. Is it possible for the rear struts to cause these issues?

The steering seems to be quite loose at speeds above 100kph (60mph).
There is also a vibration at these speeds (likely relating to balance).
How tight is your steering?
If alignment/balance doesn't fix things, what other parts might be the culprit?
