Our 2007 RX350 with 91,000 miles started an annoying rattle at startup that lasts a couple seconds then goes away. The car drives fine and makes no unusual noise after the initial start. Its definitely not normal as it hasn't done it the last 91K miles we have driven the car.

I've isolated this rattle down to the cam phaser( CVVT) in the right cylinder head. It rattles bad for 2-3 secs on cold start or after it sits for 3 hours.
I've put in 5w20 synthetic oil and synthetic Lucas additive and it cleared up the noise for short interval start ups.
I changed the cam phaser in the right head with a used one ( 40k ) but it didn't make a difference. I should change out the attaching cam as well.
I recently bought a 2011 460 L, CPO with 28,350 miles. I love the looks and how it drives, smooth! But I do have a concern. Before I go to the dealer I thought I would educate myself from the experienced LS owners. I am hearing a very brief (1-2 seconds) mild engine knock at a cold startup.
This only occurs when the engine is cold and has sat overnight. It never happens after this first startup, even after turning the engine off and then on again. It kinda sounds like the oil isn't getting where it should be for a few seconds. Engine sounds great with normal and hard acceleration throughout the day. The dealership where I bought it is 300 miles away, so I would be taking it to a local dealership.
Now I did hear this noise and mentioned it to the service manager when I first bought the car, and the service manager told me that this cold startup sound is normal. He also mentioned the direct injectors at idle. I guess sometimes it's hard to fully trust what dealerships say. Is he right?
I recently got a 600. On cold startups there are times when it makes a horrible clanking sound when it does its ~2 second low idle. The instant it goes to high idle the sound goes away. After the car has been run, I don't hear the sound again until the next cold start.
This is not normal injector click, and if it is valve click there must be a side issue causing it. Like an oil primer working intermittently or something.

My parents have a 2007 RX350 and they had the airbag light come on once in a while. I have the car right now so I could figure out the issue for them and get it fixed.
The light wouldn't come on for the first couple days and it off today for a while until I move the seat fully backward and then forward. After I restarted the vehicle the light came on.
I got to work and tried tightening all connectors under the seat and the light did go off and stay off but I didn't drive it after that.
When the light is on it blinks in the 1-second on / 1-second off pattern. When my dad's friend-mechanic checked it out, he said that the description of the code he could read was something like "open [squib] circuit connector", unfortunately, he can't remember.
I have a 2007 RX350, now at 110K miles, bought at 80K miles. I recently notice a sudden drop in mpg about 5K miles back (it might happen before that but I did not notice). Previously, the car gets around 25MPG on average, now it can only get 21 - 21.5 mpg, my range of a full tank drops around 60 miles. My route of driving everyday is pretty much the same. I have tried to change gas branch, using fuel system cleaner (Chevron Techron), check tire pressure but no luck.
What might be happening with the car that makes this significant drop in mpg?
I changed power steering rack and pinion at a dealer also about 5k miles back and at that point I had a dispute with a service consultant there. He made me drive back and forth a couple times without telling me that the part hadn't arrived yet (the car was on extended warranty). I then emailed directly to his boss. After that he treated me really well: gave me a most recent model loaner car for a week and did not charge for gas, and waived the deductible. Now I notice the MPG drop so I kind of link with this event and put him in doubt . Well, I'm not sure if he could do anything to the car since he's not the technician but still ... Can a guy put something to a car to reduce its fuel efficiency?

View 1 RepliesI'm new to the Lexus family. I recently bought a 2007 rx 350. It's in wonderful condition. I noticed that when I go above 60ish, I hear what sounds like a draft or a static-like sound. I've turned the radio off, air off, turned on re-circulated air, made sure all the windows are up, but no matter what I still hear it. I had a small Honda Civic before so I don't know if it's getting used to the aerodynamics of an suv? It almost sounds like there's a "crack" that's allowing air to come through the but there isn't. I don't notice it at all when I'm driving around town, only really on the interstate. It's most noticeable when in the drivers seat. I wasn't sure if it's just the nature of the ventilation system of this vehicle or should I have it checked? Am I just over analyzing?
View 6 RepliesI just purchased an 07 RX 350 with a salvage title. I'm going to fix it up and drive it but I'm trying to figure out why it won't start. It was hit in the front driver side corner, bent the radiator support and crushed the bumper and head light, but that is about the extent of the damage. I tried charging the battery and I get power inside and the other headlight seems very bright, but when I try to turn it over, I can hear what I think is the fuel pump engage but the engine doesn't turn over and there is no noise from the starter. Is there a sensor or something that would be stopping it?
View 4 RepliesI own a 2011 IS350 RWD. My 4 year warranty just expired. So when it comes to rattles, the 4yr/50k miles no longer cover my rattle concern.
I spent about my 3rd year on a rattle that seems like only occurs when its cold. On cold days/morning, this rattle between the dash will come and it sounds like a bolt is loose, and is moving around or something like that along the lines of that.
So right before my 4th year mark came, I brought it in one last time to hope they can get rid of it. Once I got the car back, it was during winter.. so it still happened, but instead it was a lot louder than before.
Is there anything I can do? Since I've been trying to bring it in to get it checked out for a good year, I'm hoping there's a way for the dealership to honor that one concern I have with my IS.
Other than this rattle, I love my car. The rattle can get pretty bad/annoying especially when you're on a phone call. I bring this issue up during every oil change to get it checked out.
How do you remove the tailgate trim panel on the inside. There is a rattle in there and believe it could be a bulb cause when reverse bulb was burnt out,I went to replace bulb....and it was not there...

My current question is this: if one exhibits the dreaded rattle at cold startup, does it always get worse with more time/miles? I found another one that I'm pretty happy with overall, but it does have the startup rattle for about a second at cold start, and only at cold start. Is it worth the gamble, or should I keep looking? It's got about 108k miles and is otherwise in fantastic condition...

I had a garage connect a computer to my 2013 rx350. It reported AC problem. It does not say what is wrong with it. What that actually checks on the AC ? I don't get cold air so I bought an AC kit to try and recharge it.
View 14 RepliesI own a high-mileage (115,000) 2007 RX 350 that has developed a rattle when I travel over 60 mph. I am having a hard time locating it although I'm pretty sure it is in the driver's side door. All molding is secure and pressure applied anywhere on the door does not stop the noise. If I open the door and "shake" it, I do not hear anything loose.
It is a intermittent rattle that oscillates in volume and only when I hit speeds over 60mph. Usually resonates around 70 or 80 mph. It almost sounds like a loose nut vibrating on the window glass inside the door.
I have a 2011 santa fe limited with the 3.5 and 35k miles that has a noisy timing chain rattle upon start up after sitting for a few hours,it's my understanding that the cause is no oil pressure to the tensioner because the oil drains back into the oil pan after sitting for a while. Is there a solution for this situation like a spring loaded tensioner-it seems to me that replacing the tensioner and chain does not solve the problem.
View 32 RepliesI have a strange rattling sound coming from the driver side area outside the car. BUT ... I only hear the rattling sound when I get over 50 mph. I tried to narrow it down but still no luck. Here is what I investigated so far
1) Thought it was the driver side front wheel or underside molding ... Pulled wheel and looked at the plastic molding ... Some loose so I made sure it was tightened ... Still hear noise
2) Checked the luggage rack ... Removed railings and still hear noise
3) Removed the driver side door panel to check for anything loose ... Did not find anything out of order .
4) Tightened driver side mirror ... still hear sound
Got my CPO 2012 RX350 in July, everything has been great
winter has been tough here in the north with -30 Celsius (-22 F) every other week. when it's that cold there's squeaking noise from the dashboard / windshield area. mainly from the intersection of both.
Once the car is out of the garage it's ok for a few minutes then noise starts. this only happens if the weather is colder than -10 C (14 F) (i can't blame the car as my bones squeak when it's colder than-10 ) This is definitely an expansion/contraction issue.
The dealer indicated that they will have to remove the dashboard to fix the problem and recommended that I wait towards the end of the warranty, observe other issues and fix all at once as multiple removal of the dashboard may bring new problems (i.e. snapped pieces may get loose).
With the temps at a all time low in the U.S. this week, my TPMS warning light has come on in my 2012 RX350. It will stay very cold for most of the week, so is it ok to drive with my warning light on.
I don't want to check my psi in the tires with a tire gauge because I was told a valve stem can freeze open in extreme cold letting the tire to go completely flat.
I just purchased a 2010 RX 350, has only 7k miles on it. Really, really nice car. I noticed for the first time yesterday the engine ticking/knocking/rattling/whatever you want to call it sound when starting up on a cold start. It definitely goes away after about 5-10 minutes of running.
Most people seem to accept this as "normal". They hear it, live with it, and they never have any problems. I am a new Lexus owner, so I have trouble digesting that such a luxury vehicle with so few miles would have a "normal" engine knocking sound at 7,000 miles.
A few people posted in other places that this is indeed an issue, and should not be happening. There is a a Toyota (Lexus) service bulletin that I didn't get the details on, it is LSB-0028-09. LEXUS: ENGINE TICKING NOISE AND/OR MIL ON P0014, P0015, P0024, P0025, P0017, OR P0018. ENGINE MECHANICAL. *PE
Looking for details on this service bulletin, and if it does indeed apply to the engine knocking sound.
