My 1987 Nissan Sentra has a transmission leak. The leak is from a bad gasket from the center part of the Trans. How to replace or fix this gasket without taking out the Trans. ( Just so we are clear-this is not the Trans pan)
View 9 RepliesIt appears that I have a small tran. fluid leak. Local Toyota dealer quoted me a reasonably low amount (300 or so) to fix.
My mechanic however, disagrees and says that this is a major work as the leak appears to come from the read gasket right in the middle of the entire tranny. He said the tans. need to come out and apart.
The leak is minor. It was first spotted at least a month ago and I never had to add fluid. Currently its right on the hot mark when measured after driving.
I would like to believe that my mechanic is somehow wrong. I never had to deal with a transmission leak that requires such a major effort to fix (I am talking pos old GM, Honda, etc). It just sounds odd (but then I never had a leaky rack and pinion either except in this Camry).
It would be very frustrating having to drop another grand into this car. The mileage is less than 90.000 miles. Its an automatic 2005 4 cyl.
Dad gave me an 87 Ford ranger a couple weeks ago. I love it. Everything works except I'm having transmission leak issues when I drive her more than 30 miles or so.the symptom is fluid puking out inspection plate area. I checked coolant lines today and unfortunately they are working great. I've had a couple suggestions recommending replacement of the front seal our front pump seal (is there a difference?)

View 5 RepliesI have a 1987 automatic Nissan Sentra XE- two barrel carburetor, mileage 212,880. The car has one major problem that is going to get me hit driving it in rush hour. Most mechanics will not touch the car due to being carburetor.
Let me explain: the car idles real rough at times, hesitates at stop signs and red lights, about stalls out on me when I press the gas pedal to go or when I start to make a left or right turn. However, other times the car has little to no hesitation and idles perfectly. I have not been able to come up with a good a pattern with this problem.
I have replaced, fuel pump & filter, spark plug wires, coil, distributor, ecu computer, ran sea foam through the fuel system and have replaced many vacuum hoses.
I have a 99 Sentra 217500 miles 1.6 auto: I changed the trans fluid, and now have a bearing noise on the driver's side. The car shifted ok, but would stay locked up coming from drive to a stop.The fluid had been changed a couple times, before I got the car @195000, but was now very greyish looking, not burnt or black. I drained and then used the car to pump 8 quarts total (keeping it filled) The car runs and shifts fine, but now I have a 'tire like noise' driver's side. I jacked up each front wheel and ran the car in drive. the noise only came from the drivers side. I think it is a coincidence and am having the car checked on mon.
View 5 RepliesI recently bought my Nissan Sentra from Carmax, and drove it cross-country from Maryland to New Mexico for a job. I noticed along the way that from a cold engine start, whenever I would reverse, shift to drive, and turn the wheel to straighten, I would hear a noise that sounds like pulling the parking brake coming from the tire area. The engine also makes a knocking noise when the accelerator is pressed, but gets better as the engine warms up (which I'm told is a gasket). Finally, when driving from a cold start and the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd, I hear a metallic clunk that sounds like someone hitting a metal shaft.
Any thoughts/concerns? I've read something about a premature bearing failure, if that's relevant.
This problem is really hard to describe. About a month ago, during super-cold weather (teens or single digits) while driving in traffic I felt the transmission sort of ripple or slip as I slowed down for a red light. When I attempted to go forward on the green light, the car resisted at about 10 mph - kind of like trying to go 50 mph in first gear - like it wasn't shifting. At the repair shop they told me there was ice around the wheels and they chipped it off. They drove the car and said it didn't have the other problem. A couple of weeks later, the car did it again, this time near a shopping mall, also on a very cold day (teens or 20s). I drove it into the mall at around 10 mph, parked it, was in the mall for a while, came out - no problem until last weekend - also very cold weather (teens or 20s). This time it happened at around 40 mph.
It started to slow down and I could feel the transmission slipping or rippling, then it felt like trying to go 50 mph in 1st gear and abruptly slowed down to about 10 mph. I pulled over to the side of the road, turned the ignition off, waited about a minute, started it up again and it was OK. No more problem. I took it to the repair shop and told them what happened. The mechanic said it's not the transmission because they checked it when they had it before. He said it might be the part of the computer that tells the transmission at what speed to shift. They now have the car, have driven it about 20 miles, the problem didn't show up, and one of the mechanics took it home to drive around over the weekend. By the way, the Service Engine Soon light has been on for about 2 years. I took it in once to have it fixed and it stayed off for a few months, then came on again.
I own a 2009 Nissan Sentra with a CVT transmission. It has about 65,000 miles. During the warmer months, my wife and I have both experienced times while driving (usually for more than 2 hours) when the engine would lose power while going up a hill. After doing some reading we learned that this was common in Sentra and Rogue models with CVT transmissions. Apparently the transmission fluid heats up, boils, and foams. The foam triggers a sensor that cuts power to the engine. Once the fluid's temperature decreases the car performs as it should.
We have visited the dealership and even have a case number with Nissan consumer affairs. After many appointments and phone calls, the only action taken was decreasing the level of transmission fluid. This action was approved by Nissan. This has worked a little but the issue still occasionally persists. For the record, neither my wife nor I are expecting this to drive like a race car. We'd just like it work correctly. I know Nissan has extended the warranty on this and many CVT transmissions.
So when I had my timing belt done my mechanic showed me that I had some transmission oil leaking It didn't look like much but looked like it was coming from gasket my v6 Passat has 200k on it and I heard that transmission fluid shouldn't be changed on any car with high mileage the transmission doesn't really act up sometimes when its cold it takes a little bit of time to shift to first but when its warmed up its just fine, what are my options, a full drain and filter change, which I am skeptical about. Adding some new fluid, I just gotta know if I gotta replace the drain plug. and then just a fluid change drain and add.

I first thought that it came from the front dif, well, after having an oil change at the dealer it appeared that the tranny oil pan gasket is leaking, I was under the car with the tech and I saw it. It is a small leak the dealer wants to change the gasket and tranny fluids. Being under the car it seems to me that to remove the pan and replace the gasket is an easy job..I will look into the Benley tonight.
View 7 RepliesI replaced the brake shoes on my 99 Altima for the first time yesterday. Never done this job before. It went well except on the driver side, when I was pushing the piston back in to insert the new shoe, a little brake fluid leaked out of the seal on the wheel cylinder. Is this normal? I plan to check the brake fluid level over the next few days to see if it goes down. I'm worried I could have a dangerous leak.
View 19 RepliesI replaced the filter and gasket on my transmission about a month ago, it had a slight leak when I changed it, that appeared to be coming from the back side of the pan. So changed it and everything seemed good, today I noticed a small puddle of fluid under the truck after setting only a few minute's. Got home crawled under it and sure enough it was coming from the pan gasket again, now last time when I replaced it. I put a small amount of Permatex on the gasket back there, but it is still leaking there.
I checked when i had it apart the other day for a crack or anything noticeable but figured it was just the gasket was bad ( was a cork type gasket). Its hard to get the pan in there between the cross member and the transmission so I am not sure if i scrapped the permatex off or not, I am gonna take it all back apart and check it again and put a new gasket in and put the permatex under the gasket and on the transmission then hope for the best... 97 4.6 4x4
I've never had a drop of fluid leak from my transmission until yesterday. I towed a very heavy trailer (10k or so with tons of tongue weight) about 300 miles and I got back and noticed a decent amount of fluid leaking. The transmission temperature never went over 160 on the drive. I know these transmissions tend to puke oil sometimes, but doesn't that only happen when they overheat, or would a very heavy trailer have the same symptom?
It appears the leak is coming from somewhere near the back of the pan around the gasket. More specifically, it seems the one bolt pictured below is leaking. All bolts are tight and the pan gasket was replaced about 6k ago with the last fluid flush.
Okay, I was driving down the freeway and suddenly my temperature gauge zoomed to Hot and steam rose out of the car. I stopped the car and let it cool down, then drove the 5 miles very slowly to the mechanic-stopping twice to let it cool completely.
I got it to the mechanic and a huge crack appeared across the top of the radiator when the car was on. New radiator time-gotcha. She has 235K miles on her and before this ran like she was brand new.
Now not a couple days later, I started noticing that transmission fluid was leaking about 1/2 cup of fluid a day dripping down from the axle. Can I use a stop leak for transmissions/transaxle? Would it fix the issue temporarily...
How I could take my ford explorer 2002 in to the shop to replace the radiator and come out with transmission fluid leaking. The mechanic said it is some kind of hose but it wasn't leaking before and after I drive I can see it dripping out. I'm just not sure if they messed up something. Unfortunately my husband is overseas and cannot check it.
View 3 RepliesI have 1999 Mazda Protege that has a transmission fluid leak. I took it to a transmission shop close by, and they said it is either the torque converter or the front pump. I also have oil in the coolant reservoir, which I was told they wouldn't be able to tell where the oil is coming from until the leak is fixed.
My question, is what could have caused either the torque converter or the front pump to leak? Wear and tear and old age? Or could it have been caused by something else?
I realize at some point I will just have to decide, but any input on whether it's a worthwhile fix? The shop quoted me $787 for the front pump, and said the torque converter would be a few hundred more. That's not taking into account the possible issue with the radiator from the oil in the coolant reservoir.
The car has approximately 160,000 miles on it. The catalytic converter will need to be fixed at some point in the future, the O/D light is flashing (though I'm not sure if it's related to my transmission problems at all), cruise control doesn't work, and the drivers side mirror is broken...
My new/used 2000 4x4 excursion with 214000 miles on it has a transmission fluid leak.
It could be a rear portion of pan gasket but it seems to be coming out of the area where the transmission bolts to the extension housing.
I just put a transfer case in it. Thought all the fluid all over was due to exploded T case.
It seems the output shaft seal may be bad. I cannot seem to find an OEM part number for this seal.
What is part number for this seal, if one exists? Maybe the seal is in the extension housing and it's just the gasket between Trans and housing.
So I went outside yesterday, an hour after getting home from an hour drive. I find a PUDDLE of transmission fluid under my car. The only place WET under the car, however, is under the passenger side (where the antifreeze is). When the flat bed tow truck arrived and lifted the car onto the truck, there was a line of fluid that leaked out where the car was pulled onto the bed at an angle. When I spoke to the mechanic this morning he said he can't find a leak anywhere. My transmission fluid is full as is my antifreeze. So where did the leak come from and why isn't it happening now?

It shows up on the street, but I measure it with the car sitting for a week and it amounted to about 2 teaspoons but the dipstick still shows "do not add". When it gets to the "add" point on the dipstick, how much transmission fluid would that be?
