Passat (B5) :: Front End Noise / Clunking For A While

Jul 21, 2012

I have been chasing this dam noise / clunking for awhile now. i changed the tie rod ends, cv axels and sway bar endlinks so far. (they needed to get done anyway) besides those parts all the other bushings in my front end look good.

The noise I will hear is a cracking noise when starting to move from a dead stop and when changing gears i can feel/hear a clunking in my front end. What to check???

Passat (B5) :: Clunking Noise In Front End When Car Goes Over A Dip At Speed

When I drive over a bump or the car goes over a dip at speed, there is clunking sound from the front end. It seems to be much more noticeable in this cold weather, hence my current concern. I have not looked into it at all. I live on a bumpy dirt road, so the front end gets a workout.

The car has 39,800 miles. So the 40k is almost here, and the 4 years is almost here as well so I cannot just not drive the car for a while.

But if I can get a common problem fixed under warranty, I will take the time tomorrow to deal with this. The other weird thing in this cold snap is that the VW never seems to get to 190 deg, like it usually does (middle of temp gauge), it will be a few notches below. Normal situation? It will go back to 190 if I turn off the heat and drive a bit harder, but with the heat blasting (baby in car) and very mellow driving, it doesn't quite make it...

Passat (B5) :: Clunking Noise In Front Right Suspension At 67,000 Miles

My 2002 Passat Wagon (2.8L, FWD) has started developing a clunking noise at 67,000 miles in the front right suspension. Based on forum search here, it sounds like a common problem with the control rods, tie rod ends, ...

I looked at the control arm kits available at ECS Tuning. Is this a DIY job for someone with only moderate mechanical skills? I have never performed front end suspension work before. How difficult is it? Special tools needed?

If I had it done (both sides, upper and lower) at an independent repair shop, how much might I expect to pay?

Lastly, is it best to replace all the parts (as provided in these kits), rather than isolating the part that is currently causing the clunk and just replacing what needs to be replaced?

Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Clunking / Popping Noise From Driver Side Front Suspension?

We have a 1999 Passat GLX 2.8 auto. I recently put on a new inner and outer tie rod as well as a lower forward control arm. The issue that we are experiencing is that when accelerating or braking hard there is a popping/clunking noise coming from the driver front area. When accelerating or braking normally/ smoothly it is fine. But, as I said accelerate or brake hard it will make a single pop or clunk and that is it, just once when braking hard or accelerating quickly.

Passat (B6) :: Clunking Sound Occasionally On Front

Getting a sub-frame spacer and bolt kit tomorrow... Hopefully that will resolve the clunking sound I occasionally hear up front.. Everything is tight and solid up front, suspension-wise, so we'll see if this fixes the issue. If nothing else, it's a cheap 'mod'..

Passat (B5) :: Front Suspension Clunking Vibration At Low Speeds

This just started happening on the driver side. Going over bumps and slight road wobble type imperfections make a medium pitched clunk sound. The sound stops as soon as I press the brakes ( which I just replaced last week). I do have a worn out bushing on the curved lower control arm. Could that be it? Do I need to replace all control arms or can I do just the curved set? If thats the issue.

Passat (B5) :: Clunking When Braking Coming From The Front Driver Side

Every time I brake I hear a clunking noise, it happens right before I stop completely. For some reason it does not make the noise when it has recently rained or the car is wet, the noise is coming from the front drivers side. I had a mechanic check out my suspension, and he said everything was fine. I am thinking it could be a bushing, but am not sure.

Ford Excursion :: Front End Clunking Noise?

I've had a front end clunk best felt on the floorboards at very slow speeds on uneven ground. I've read for a month on this site on this issue and have replaced the ball joints and sway bar end links with Moog parts. New shocks also. Well I've improved but its still there. I cannot budge the trac bar bolts with breaker bar. The axle u bolts seemed loose so I tightened them but I'm not sure of the torque specs on them. What are the torque specs on the u bolts and where to go from here?

Golf IV R32 :: Clunking Noise Coming From Front End When Going Very Slowly

Ive had a weird annoying clunking noise coming from the front of my car going very slowly you can hear it or just by sitting still turning the wheel. It also appears while braking a clunking noise as the weight shifts.I replaced all control arm bushing, cv joints, and ball joints. The only other thing I could imagine is tie rods so I got under the car and had my gf turn the wheel its not coming from the outer tie rod ends but towards the middle? I am curious if maybe its some time of bushing towards the middle.

Honda - Cr-v :: 2011 - Clunking Noise In Front Brakes

I have a 2011CRV 2 wheel drive that is making a clunking noise in the front brakes every time I take my foot off of the pedal. I took it to the dealer twice and both times they told me that there is nothing they can do about it. They said it has to do with the way the pads wear but said that even when I change them the clunk probably won't go away. I have never heard a car do this.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Clunking Noise Coming From The Front End

I have an 06 Sonata GLS with a clunking noise coming from the front end somewhere. I hear it when I drive over small cracks or bumps in the road, and when I jerk the car from side to side. I have just replaced the front struts, bearing plates, and sway bar links. I've checked the tie rods, ball joints, control arm bushings, etc.. Yet the noise still exists. After a recommendation from a Hyundai Tech, I even re-tighten the subframe bolts using loctite. I am completely lost at this point and do not know what to do to eliminate this annoying noise.

Sedan :: Clunking Noise In Front Suspension Only Sometimes When Turning

So I got a steering problem and it's got me going crazy. I have a 06 g35 sedan lowered about an 1.5 inches. It's been about 5 months since I lowered it, lately I've been herring clunking noise in front suspension, not all the time but only sometimes when I turn. The other day my steering got really stiff and when I turn the steering won't return to the center. My Power steering isn't making any noise and I'm good on fluid. A lot of people say my ball joints but don't they usually make a lot of noise when they go bad ?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Clunking Noise From Front Suspension

I am trying to find origin of clunking noise, but it is difficult to do as there is no visual signs and no excessive movements in any components.

Little bit of details and video. Noise occurs when moving rapidly steering wheel on stationary car with running engine. Not noticeable when at speed. Wheel is not vibrating and cv joints not clicking. Very tiny free movement in steering wheel about 1mm, but I am not sure if that is related maybe a completely different issue there. Mot tester make an advisory note that steering system slightly rough, but its not that useful to find an issue.

Toyota :: 1993 - New Front Axle But Same Day Clunking Noise

I just got my left front axle replaced on my Toyota (1993) and my engine mounts as well. The car is in great shape and has been driving well.Drove it away, and it was running great. It is still running great (after driving all the way home) but, I noticed it is making a loud clunking, metal on metal kind of noise on the front left axle when in first gear, happens more when turning (I think right, but maybe both right and left). I just paid a lot of money and trust the mechanic, but this does not sound right at all.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Clicking / Clunking Noise From Front End?

I've been having a problem with a popping/clicking sound coming from my front end for some time now. 2 days ago I replaced the top strut mounts thinking they were worn and this was the source of my problem, however, the noise persists.I have raised the car and have tried to physically move the wheels, up, down, left, right, but I get no play in any direction.

When the sound happens: If I go over small bumps in the road, or depressions, or speed bumps at slow speed I hear what sounds like a metal on metal sound, but muffled, not a clang, but a pop sound. I can induce it by stepping hard on the brakes, as the car lurches forward I get the sound. After stopping, when the weight moves back again I get the sound again.HOWEVER, I do NOT get the sound from acceleration. I have tried putting on the parking break and trying to take off, but I don't get the sound. The sound is their wether or not I'm in gear.

What could this sound be? My possibilities include:T ie-Rods, Axles, Transmission (loose bolts), broken engine mounts, loose subframe, or perhaps my control arm bushings (but they were replaced with poly bushings about 30k miles ago)

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2001 AWD - Front Clunking Noise

I have a 2001 AWD Mountaineer with 5.0 engine and 183,000 miles. A little over a year ago a harsh clunking noise started coming from the front. It was obvious that it was coming from one of the drive component because the noise and harshness changed with speed. At slow speeds it was clunking with every revolution of the wheels. The intensity seemed to change with the direction of the wheels also. I figured it might be a CV joint and proceeded to check them out. None appeared to be bad, but with the mileage on the car I figured it wouldn't hurt to replace the axle shafts, so I started with the left (driver's) side which is where I felt the noise was coming from. The noise went away and I was happy. To my surprise about 6 months ago the same noise came back. This time I replaced the right side axle shaft. Again the noise went away.

Unfortunately the problem hasn't gone away though. A couple of days or a couple of weeks may pass with no problem, but then suddenly it starts again. I took it to a trusted mechanic when it was making the noise. It was so loud when I pulled into his driveway that he stopped what he was doing to look. But, when he took it for a drive it was as quiet as the day I bought it in 2001. I also talked to the service people at the local Ford dealer and they told me that there was basically nothing they were aware of that could cause this problem, but to bring it in the next time it did it and they would check it out. At this point I almost want something to fall out of it. At least then we'll know where the problem is.
