So CEL came on a few weeks ago as it does here and there so got it scanned today and it said "cooling system too lean" could it just be the mods throwing the light. car is tuned so i thought cel wasn't suppose to come on and no mods to the cooling system beside cold air intake..
View 6 RepliesI recently had some work done on my 2001 1.8t Passat. All new vacuum hoses & camshaft tensioner replaced by VW dealer. Check engine light is coming on and an independent shop near read out a code: Bank 1 mixture adaptation(multi): System too lean.
What does this mean??? And could this relate to these parts being replaced??? Work was done approx 2000 miles ago.
I have a 2001 Passat 1.8T that has the pesky MIL light on with a DTC code P0171 lean system. I have sent it to the mechanic many times to no avail. What the mechanic did was replacement of the MAF, O2 sensors, checked intake manifold leak as well as exhaust manifold leak. His last attempt was to check for clogged injectors and fuel filter and they were in good condition. He says the ECM is bad. I was able to retrieve freeze frame data as well as live data which shows that the computer is compensating what it thought was lean by having very positive LTFT of 22.6. I don't believe the ECM is bad but cannot be sure. There is one more thing that was not checked by the mechanic is the EGR valve. Could that be the cause of my woes - the lean system?

Which are misfire on 4 cylinders and system to lean (bank 1).
Here is what I have done:
Got the 4 ignition coils replace, replaced the mass air flow, replaced the air filter, replace the plugs.
I just check the L wire and it doesn't have any cracks or holes
I don't know what to do next.
We have a 2003 Passat 1.8t. Had the Check engine Light come on. Went down to AutoZone and hookeded up the OBDII reader. Came up with P0171, Fuel System for Bank 1 was too lean. Probable causes:
1. Fuel Pressure of MAF (If Bank 1 & Bank 2 set codes together)
2. O2 Sensor
3. Ignition Misfire
4. Fuel Injector Problem
Car has 60K - has always run well. Wife says she thinks it's running a bit sluggish. I rarely drive the car, but I think she's right. Car is not missing or running rough.
I cleared the code & started the engine; Check Engine Light is off; then looked at the codes and I find a P0171 (Pending). She tells me that the light has been on before & then gone away. So I guess it clears itself, but eventually comes back.
My MIL came on the other night so I brought it to the dealer today for diagnosis.
Per tech, "Found 1 DTC P2181 for cooling system malfunction, checked measuring values, found thermostat sticking open.
Recommendation is to replace thermostat with housing." I have 95K miles on the car, original owner...first time in a long time to have an issue.
The SA indicated the thermostat replacement. The tech indicated the thermostat is in the front of the engine which is hard to access.
Planning on doing a flush, but how do i bleed the air in the system after? is there a bleed bolt?
View 5 RepliesI have a 1997 no turbo Passat 2.0 6 cyl.Over the weekend one of the plastic pipes for the coolant system cracked and after the replacement I end up with the panel telling me that there is no coolant on the reservoir. How to bleed the air out of the system or if there is any bleeding valve for this purpose? And where is located?
View 1 Replies I've recently started popping up a random P2181 performance malfunction in cooling system.
It's so random and shows no signs of any other problems that I'm confused. Temp gets hot, stays exactly where it should be, 200. Never gets a tick hotter, or even close to above 200. Air works, heat works fine. No loss of power. It only seems to come on when I really put my foot down.
The MIL came on and I scanned for codes. First was P0118, Engine Coolant Temp Circuit High Input. Reset it and then received P1296 -Cooling System Malfunction. Temp gauge needle is positioned where it always is.
View 15 RepliesHave an '07 2.0T w/92K on it. Check eng light came on over the weekend. Performance is fine etc. Went to AutoZone just to find the general area of the the trouble code since there's no one with a VAG Com nearby. The code is as the title indicates. For the last 5 months the temp gauge has been moving 1-2 ticks to the left (cooler) of the normal 200 degrees, then it will go back to 200 etc. It previously has always stayed on 200 once it warmed up. Does this sound like a thermostat?
If it is, I'm wondering if I could save some money while they were in there to go ahead and change the TB as well? From what I've researched the thermostat is in same area. I was planning on doing the TB at around 100-110k so while it would be earlier than planned I'd do it if it meant saving a bit from the combo work.
This code came up on my car, what it means or what part needs to be replaced.

I am getting to check engine codes and I can't figure out what is causing them, one is P1296 cooling system malfunction, the other is P1654 Check DTC Memory of control panel ECU, any clues as to why I'm getting these, I did have a bad thermostat i changed that and it's still on, I also used the new prestone antifreeze for all makes and models, cause I am about 200 miles away from a dealership for g12.
View 6 RepliesTwo weeks ago a large, industrial truck dropped a piece of bent steel pipe on the interstate in front of my 2010, 50k miles, Prius and (sadly) I was forced to hit or swerve into rush hour traffic and cause an accident. It tore up a good part of the cooling system and did some body damage. Of course I didn't know this at the time, but it began to overheat, so I pulled off the freeway and had it towed to a body shop. After about ten days, I got my Prius back.

View 1 RepliesAbout a week ago the MIL came on and a VCDS scan (below) shows DTC P0171 & P0174 System Too Lean - MIL ON. I cleared the codes and the MIL came back on twice over the last week, both times with the same codes. I cleared the codes each time and it takes a while for the MIL to come back on. The car runs very good at speed but it has what feels like a little misfire at idle. This is especially noticeable when in gear, it seems the rpm drops a little bit every few seconds, but the time between those drops is not consistent. I made two videos to show this, see below.
I looked up the codes in the Bentley manual and it suggests the following:

I just got this car a 04 4.2l, put about 2000km on it and MIL light now on. Just got VCDS here is the scan.
I tried clearing the system too lean codes and shut off MIL and engine ran poorly, I think that is the cyl misfire codes.
Car runs fine with MIL on, averaging 10.8 l/100km hwy driving, but need to get emission tested and here in Ontario, they read the obd.

How can one get a too lean AND a too rich error, within 150 miles? I'm guessing the too rich code was what through the CEL last night. For reference, the only mod is APR stage 1. That will teach me to drive "spiritedly" with a Porsche Turbo S. (which sounded amazing at WOT btw..)

I have a 2008 Santa fe with 68000 km, very high gas consumption. i checked the car computer.
1 - System too lean at idle (b1)
2 - System too lean at idle (b2)
The mechanic advice me to make some replacement and maintenance
1- Spark Plug Replacement
2- Change Fuel filter
3- change air filter
4- Injector cleaning
I have changed the spark plugs, still having high gas consumption.
i have a 2005 camry 4 cyl. and i have a couple of code: second o2 sensor, system too lean, misfire cyl. 1 2 3 and 4. when i run the car it is incredible how much gas it take.
I first replace the second o2 sensor and i cleaned the maf sensor, air filter, iac and trhotle body but the codes came again.
