Passat (B7) :: 2012 3.6 SE - Hard Startup Due To Excessive Carbon Build Up

Jan 31, 2013

Last week when we were in the single digits outside my 3.6 SE took about 15-20 sec of cranking to start (garage kept). Then the check engine light came on (2nd time in 10 months). I drive a lot (80 miles a day), and have put 19,900 miles on since I purchased it in March of 2012. The light turned off after three cycles, but I just so happen to have my 20,000 mile service scheduled so I took the car in. The hard start still is happening every few start ups.

The dealer told me the hard start issues I have been experiencing was due to excessive carbon build up on the valves. The dealer said they haven't seen many "high mileage" 2012 3.6 come through, so they could not tell me if this is common.

I use Shell 93 octane for every fill up. Is there something else I should be doing to prevent this carbon build up? Any others seen this with their higher mileage 2012 3.6? BTW they also had to replace the right rear control arm due to one of the bushings being worn out!

Passat (B6) :: Rough Starting - Carbon Build Up?

Anything to remove some carbon build up, that won't cost an arm and a leg. My car has 123k miles on it and those morning starts from the carbon build up are just unpleasing to say the least.

Passat - Volkswagen :: Misfiring On Cylinder 3 - Carbon Build Up On Intake Manifold

I recently took my 2007 VW Passat 2.0T in b/c the check engine light was on. They initially replaced a leaking valve and a bad ignition coil, but the car was still misfiring on cylinder 3. They took off the intake manifold and found that there was significant carbon build up. The service writer said it was from "low-quality" gas. The car requires 91 octane. I've used 93 octane since 2007 but started using 89 octane around 6 months ago when the gas prices spiked again. Could 6 months of 89 octane cause significant carbon build up to the point it would trip the check engine light? Or could something else have caused it that I need to watch out for?

Acura - Integra :: Removing Carbon Build Up On Pistons?

My 87 Acura Integra with 170k gave SMOG reading in CA as below:

NOSpeed Max Meas15 760 87525 542 535

A m/c tells me it is the result of carbon build up on pistons.

Incidentally it gave the following in 2010 - upon retesting without any repair it passed:

NOSpeed Max Meas15 760 65625 542 678

Note: Recent oil change (Mobil 1 High Mileage), tune up, Thermostat, new PCV valve, NGK Plat spark

It is for "NO" - Nitrous Oxide

Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Valve Rattle Under Acceleration - Carbon Build Up

I have a 2014 Sonata with 22k miles. I love this car but lately I've noticed valve rattle under acceleration. Brought this up with service tech and he said I'm not driving the car on long enough trips to keep it cleaned off. When I researched the GDI very little info comes up for Hyundai mainly vw and BMW. I guess what I'm asking is is the only fix for the carbon build up removing the intake and cleaning the valves manually or is there another way.

Passat (B6) :: Knock Sensor Code After Valve Carbon Scrubbing Service

I have a '07 Passat Wagon 2.0T with 80K miles. I just had the carbon scrubbed off the valves (looked like black popcorn stuck in there!) and now I'm getting a "P0327 Knock Sensor 1" light. The motor seems to run just fine (actually much better now without the carbon build-up). I'll clear the code but it will show up again the next day.

What could cause the code? Could it be related to the recent scrubbing (fully removed and replaced the valve cover in the process), perhaps a chunk of carbon floating around in the tubes somewhere? I want to go back to the guys that performed the service but I want to have a good idea of what could be the problem and the fix before I get there.

Golf/GTI VI :: 2010 MKVI Hard To Start / Excessive Cranking

I've had an intermittent problem on my DSG GTI. It will crank about 5 - 10 seconds before it turns over. It doesn't happen all the time. I've also noticed it stalling out after start up occasionally.

After several trips to my lame dealer they can't find anything wrong or duplicate the problem.

Passat (B7) :: 2012 - Engine Whistle Under Hard Acceleration With A/C On?

Currently having a possible 'issue' with my 2012 Passat 3.6. Every time I perform a hard acceleration, or any time the RPM's exceed 4,400, I can hear a whistle that is rpm-based coming from the engine bay. It is quite notable from outside as well, and ONLY occurs when the A/C is ON. Is this something I should be concerned about? I never hear it when hard accelerating without the A/C on. It is a high pitch whistle that increases in pitch the higher RPM's that are reached. Sounds almost exactly like a turbo, but as soon as I change gears in the acceleration, the pitch instantly drops back down but still matching (pitch-wise) rpms in the next gear and continues again.

It's loud enough to hear it in the cabin, but not over, say, 6 of volume on the radio.

Passat (B5) :: Excessive Noise At 30 To 75 Mph - Bearings?

My W8 has a noise problem that's getting worse. I've had the tires replaced and had the dealer look at it. My dealer thought the rear rims were bent, but the noise definitely comes from the front end - I'm pretty sure the passenger side. What this could be? I'm thinking bearings but when I jacked the car up there was no play in either front wheel. Had the tires rotated and the noise didn't move.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2012 F250 Surface Rust / Excessive Chipping Of Paint

It appears it is mostly surface rust and am looking for something relatively simple to fix it. I would prefer to use something in aerosol cans since it is small amount of total area, maybe Rustoleum products?

I will attempt to remove as much of the rust as possible with circular wire brush on drill but feel there will still be little crevices that I won't be able to fully clean.

I'm also interested in knowing what I should use to harden the surface to prevent the excessive chipping of paint in this area.

Passat (B7) :: Excessive Road Noise - Tires?

Feel there is excessive road noise on the highway? (not wind noise)

Seems as though it can be worse depending on the surface. Comparing the B7 to the wife's Q5 is painful. Heck, even my MKVI GTI was silent compared to this. What do you all is a good fix?

Tires? If so, what would be a good upgrade? The P Zero Neros on the GTI seemed pretty good. I'm new to car tires. Long time Jeeper. Dynamite under all carpet?

Passat (B6) :: Auto Gearbox Disengage Due To Excessive Torque

I just heard a dyno operator explain a dip in torque from 1500-2500 rpm as being that the auto box disengages due to excessive torque to prevent damage.

this is for a chipped passat B6 1.8TSI (I know guys in the US dont have this engine) but hardware nonetheless should be similar is there such a feature for the B6 autobox to disengage or pull power in order to protect itseld due to excessive torque?

2ndly, does a dyno even read accurately WOT from 1500-2500 rpm?

Passat (B6) :: 2007 - Excessive Road Or Drivetrain Noise?

2007 3.6 Wagon Sport. My wife has the 18" Samarklan wheels and automatic transmission. We have complained to the dealer since the beginning with only the "you need new tires" response. Well we got new tires last year and the noise was the same. I've had 18" on my old '00 S4 and current '00 A8 with nothing near this amount of noise.

The sound is most like a groan and doesn't seem to be coming from the engine. It's seem most noticeable at lower speeds coming/coasting to a stop, but does not seem to vary with or without braking. It doesn't seem to vary based on turning either.

I don't ride in her car much, but am always shocked how loud it is when I do, as it's so dramatically louder. Also the HVAC 'percolates' constantly which is generally only noticeable at idle. This is a small, secondary concern. I everyone's Passat really this loud?

Passat (B7) :: Shallow / Thin Door Weather Stripping Causing Excessive Wind Noise

First off let me say I love my TDi for everything I bought it for...fuel economy, space, ride comfort.

I've noticed the wind noise before but had never taken a drive more than 30 minutes.I just took my first 300 mile road trip and REALLY noticed the EXCESSIVE wind noise.

I traded a 2010 GTI and its weather stripping was more full and produced a much better closed door seal and I never once had problems with wind noise in the 2 years that I owned.
