I have a 2002 Prius that is running fine except for a loud noise when I started it up---like the one the exha fan in my bathroom makes, but the car runs well and there are no lights or any other indicator that anything is wrong. I am taking it to a local mechanic today, since I don't trust my local dealer. My car has about 95, 000 miles on it.
View 7 RepliesI bought a 1996 Lexus ls400 last July to extend the life of my Santa Fe. So during the summer months, I've hardly been driving the SF. My problem is that if I don't drive it for 4 to 5 days, I get a tapping noise on start up and it continues for about 3 to 4 minutes and then totally disappears. As long as I drive it every other day I never hear that sound. Not sure if this is a recent development or has always been there as the SF used to be my DD.
View 8 RepliesI have an '01 Prius, 185,000 miles. A few years ago, it developed an engine (?) knock immediately after starting; disappears after 30 sec. It has gotten progressively louder and now runs very rough during those 30 sec. After that, just hums along.
View 9 RepliesTwice during the 6 months that we have owned our 2010 Prius, a loud clattering noise from under the hood occurred upon startup. After shutting it down and restarting, all was normal. It sounded like an engine that was getting ready to throw a connecting rod. The dealer could find nothing wrong and when I contacted Toyota's hot line, they were clueless as well. One service writer suggested the ABS as the source, but I've owned 5 other cars with ABS and never heard anything like it.
View 2 RepliesMy G1 prius (2001) started making a grinding noise when I start it up in the morning. There are no warning lights (yet) and it drives fine, but that noise can't be good -- something will fail shortly. I've searched the internet quite thoroughly and there was one similar problem reported, which ended up being linked to the ABS pump. The noise seems to come from the inverter, or somewhere under the inverter. I took a video of it and posted it here.
View 19 RepliesI replaced my GF's water pump, timing belt, tensioner and roller on her 05 Elantra. WHen I started the car up I can hear a loud whine from the belt.
Everwhere I searched I read that it's too tight.

At around 9:11, when the guy starts the car it's the same exact whine? Is this normal or something with a brand new belt? Or did he tighten it too much? Or is it because her timing belt covers are missing the rubber grommets, and there is a HOLE in the side of one of them. So am i getting the full brunt force of the timing belt?
When starting my car first thing in the morning, for the first few minutes there is a loud roaring seems like. The sound subsides and the car sounds normally after a little bit. The next issue is when I start the car after it is already warm. It starts very strange...It is a little hard to describe. As soon as you hit the starter it just turns over instantly, seems almost prematurely. And when you go to shut the car off, it just seems like it makes a loud noise and the motor abruptly shuts off. I am not too educated with vehicles, and I am just looking for some input. I just purchased this car a week ago with 82,200 miles on it I have never driven a Buick before so these things may be normal.
View 4 RepliesOccasionally, when I start my 07 I hear a loud zip noise that seems to be coming from the front of the car somewhere. I know it's kinda tough to pinpoint. Something running against the teeth of plastic gears comes to mind.
I should also mention that it happens immediately after the engine has started, about the same time the self leveling headlights start to move.
When I start my car I hear this very loud noise. I think it is coming from the exhaust but not sure. This only happens when the car is cold(not weather) and after a few minutes the noise is gone. I have aftermarket lowering springs on the car, do you think that caused the problem?(I'm thinking no)...

Some information : 2006 Camry 2.4L.
I have removed the belt to verify that the noise is not from any belt-driven components. Using an Engine Ear, it gets louder towards the exhaust manifold, but apart from starting to tear things down.
Have had SC430 for over 10 years, 94000 miles. Have loud buzzer sound behind dash on startup or when key is turned to on position. The sound last 10-20 seconds and goes off. I have turned the AC off and tried different modes, no change. Everything seems to be working fine with the AC. Could this be a servo motor, the noise is not coming from the engine compartment. Any thoughts on problem and how to fix it. It makes this sound on every startup.

I did not use the car for 2 months while I was away.
Started up the Touareg last night to come home from work and immediately heard a new noise. It is loud and clearly audible from inside the vehicle. I was able to isolate it to something inside the front driver's side fender, something above the wheel well. Sounds like a cross between a blender and a leaf blower (a device that I could certainly use at this time of the year.) Note - the noise goes away when turn off the climate control system (by lowering the fan speed all the way.)

View 19 RepliesThis is a 2001 Prius - car runs great and the AC is fine. However, driving down the road, when the AC is turned on there is a noticeable scraping/ticking noise - sounds like it coming from under the hood.
With the car parked, and the ignition ON, but without the gas engine running, there is no scraping noise.
I have driven 25,xxx miles on my 2010 Prius. Three times during the last thousand miles I have experienced very loud and scary engine noises during start up. The car had sat for at least ten hours outside in 20-30 degree weather.
I took the car into the dealership for an oil change and my service advisor told me that Toyota was aware of the problem and the noise was not coming from the engine- but a device that mates the ICE with the electric engine. He told me that although it was a loud and dangerous sounding noise, it was not something that would harm my motor. I asked that the noise be logged into my service record.
I hear a loud screeching noise (like a loose belt) when the 2009 Corolla starts cold. It disappears, and when the car gets a little warmer, it's gone. I had the belt replaced, made no difference. Car runs fine, otherwise.
View 3 RepliesMy '03 Jeep Grand Cherokee seems to be having an array of problems lately, I think they might be related. Almost 100,000 and its falling apart on me. When I start it up on cold mornings it has a loud whining noise. The check gauges light comes on and shows the oil temp as being cold. After leaving it idle for a bit, I will go to drive it and the heater will shut itself off. Later in the day after the first cold start, the loud whining and check gauges light don't happen again. But the heat shuts off every now and then. Is it all related?

View 4 RepliesMy question is what could cause a high idle?I have a 95 Chevy pickup 4x4 with a 5.7... Recently the lower radiator hose fell came off the radiator, dumping the liquids all over the street. The motor shut down, and every time we went to start it there would be a loud whining/spinning noise. We thought that the motor seized, so we pulled the plugs, turned the motor by the crank bolt.Turned out that the starter went bad, the spindle and bendex werent catching on the flywheel.
After examining the flywheel teeth, and gapping the plugs to the recommended manufacture gap, (they werent when we pulled them), we got a new starter installed. It started right up! But it ran at a high idle, around 1500-2000 RPM. I did not have a chance to really let it warm up (it was cold and raining). Now there is a gray flexhose that is running from the air filter housing down to the exhaust manifold. If i remember correctly, it was not seated very well when I took it off. Could it be causing too much of a vacuum?
After hearing some loud noise coming from my exhaust system, it was determined that there is a hole (from rust) in part of the cat. assembly. Three shops advised for replacement, there are no aftermarket products for this unit. I have NOT gotten any error codes, the only problem is the noise. What to do? The car is 10 years old with 86000 miles. I have been reading about some of you getting just the one piece and having it welded on, but I do not believe any of the shops here will do that, and indicated that it would be a very temporary fix.
