I have a 05 Prius. Developed a low hum noise some time ago. It now is so loud can't hear the radio. Sounds like a heavy agressive truck tire rolling down the road. When turning the steering wheel from right to left quickly, noise level changes. Does this sound like a bad wheel bearing and if so what am I looking at for repair costs?
View 5 RepliesMy 2005 Prius has 95k miles on it. I've been hearing a cluck-cluck-cluck noise from near the front driver side wheel. I had an independent mechanic test drive it, who said the wheel bearing needs replacement. Should I have it checked out by a Toyota dealer? They're so much more expensive, but are is it worth taking it to them?
View 15 RepliesFirst issue started a few weeks ago. When turning left at a speed > 20mph or when turning wheel quickly I get a rattling noise, which is more prominent with the driver window down, so it sounds like it comes from the driver side front wheel, but not quite sure. It is fairly loud as I have had pedestrians look at my car when turning because they can hear the rattle.
Second issue started this morning but has persisted every time since. When the car is cooling down, we get that whirring noise, which I presume is thr coolant pump. That noise also happens now when I enter the car, and it is accompanied by a knocking noise as if somebody is hitting the outside of the car repeatedly. This is quite unnerving as it sounds like something is hitting the bodywork of the car. It stops immediately when the normal whirring stops.
I had the steering and water pump recall done in november last year, could this be related to that? Forgot ti add the car has done 49000miles....
What would cause the front wheel on drivers side to lock up if it isn't the brakes. have been hearing a loud popping noise for a while on drivers side especially when turning left. Today got really loud just driving and then a real loud grinding noise. Then a loud pop and front wheel locked up and skidded across highway til i came to a stop. What it could be or how can i at least get wheel to turn to get it on trailer...
View 6 RepliesAt about 20k on my 07 I started hearing a faint whup whup whup between 35 and 50 mph's on the front driver's side area. At 60+ pretty quiet. It has gotten real loud at the present 30K. I suspected the tirers as I know the Integrities are complete junk but as a test I did a rotation and exact same noise.
I thought thats not good but found it hard to believe something else was bad as I had no vibration and no pull whatsoever in steering. Long story short I bought a new set of tires Kumho KR21's at stock size and oh crap exact same noise.
I have a 2006 Prius (150K miles) with a noise coming from the drivers left wheel. It is a hollow metallic squeak that only occurs while the vehicle is moving. It sounds like the wheel is making brief contact with something metallic at the same point on every rotation. The pitch of the squeak increases with the speed of wheel rotation. It does so while rolling, with breaks and without. The noise gets louder when turning right, and softer when turning left, though it begins to get louder again when the wheel is turned hard all the way left.
View 1 RepliesSo on my girlfriends 2000 echo I get the classic bad wheel bearing noise/vibration on the front left (driver side) wheel. Worsens under load (right turn) and goes away when unloaded (left turn). I've replaced left side bearing, CV axle, brake rotors/pads and the noise still persists. My next thought is maybe the ball joint but humming/vibration tells me something out of rotational balance. Bearing in the transmission? I don't know. I'm stuck.

there is a LOUD squeaking noise coming from my drivers side wheel when driving. When I press the brakes then the noise goes away. I took the wheel off to duplicate the noise by turning the rotors but I couldn't. maybe I couldn't turn it fast enough though. Its not the brake/rotor shield either.
At first it was a slight squeak but now its getting really loud. embarrassing loud. Could the possible issues be calipers, brake shims, cv, axle?
Recently I lowered my .:R pretty low on fk highsports.. well today i was backing off into my driveway.. When i turned my wheels to the right or to the the left the front driver wheel makes loud noise like tick tick tick.. when i put my wheels straight no noise at all.. It happens when i go forward or backwards turning my wheels to the right or left..
View 13 RepliesI've had some awful noise coming from the front drivers side of my car. Determining the likly cause to be the wheel bearing, I decided to tackle replacing the hub assembly as a lovely weekend project. Things were going along ok - Removed brake caliper, removed the axle nut (that wasn't fun), removed the rotor (rather persistently stuck on, but it gave in the end), and then came removing the hub assembly itself. Had a rented hub puller, put it on, started tightening it down and tapping on the hub as I went. It was getting pretty tight on there (was starting to worry about the safety of the cv shaft), and then as I tapped on the hub one last time, the hub and hub puller popped off the car... I was elated, until I realized rather than pulling the entire hub assembly out, it had actually separated the inner track of the bearing from the outer track, leaving the wheel bearing and flange behind inside the steering knuckle.
So, here I sit, with half my hub assembly on the ground and the other half still in the car. How to get the rest of the hub assembly out, now that there is nothing to really pull on? I've tapped around on it for a couple hours, and soaked it in enough penetrating oil to make the car flamable, but no give. I've even tried putting the hub bolts back in through the back and tapping on them with a hammer to no avail (probably going to have to replace the bolts now, but one problem at a time).
When it is cold (below 30 degrees) and above about 30mph, there is a loud high pitched squeal (rather like the pitch of a squealing hearing aide)that seems to come form the front drivers side. The colder it is, the louder it is.
When I am able to take it in it is too warm to hear it. What might be causing the noise and will they be able to figure it out if it isn't making the sound?
2002 Mountaineer, suddenly started making a loud clicking noise driver side front. Seldom in reverse. Struts and axle look good, nothing hanging down.

Its quiet if I am going straight, but it sounds like there is a linkage loose. Its not too loud or noisy, but having problems with tierods/knuckle assy?
View 1 RepliesMy car is a 2000 Corolla CE I bought 2 months ago with 45k miles. It does not have ABS system.
Before I took the mechanic:When I brake, there would be a "clamping" noise from the drivers front wheel sometimes. It sounds like the caliper "clamping" noise. The brake cylinder would also click the first time (and maybe second) the pedal is pressed.
The mechanic replaced the both front calipers, put new brake pads, installed rear drums and shoes, and changed brake fluid.
The brake pedal is now high and when I brake....it does brake but it's not like "instant stopping power" like new brake pads. Is this normal? (maybe I have to break them in). Also, the master cylinder is still clicking (I pump the brakes since my car has no ABS)....it clicks the first 2 times I pump. Is that normal?
Edit:Since the repair, I drove it for the second time. This time the brakes brake more "instantly". The clicking of the master cylinder is still there however, could this be due to air in the hoses?
Lowered my car yesterday. 23" FTG. I'm now hearing a clicking noise from my drivers side front wheel.. I mostly hear it when my foot is off the gas and I'm just coasting (usually at slower speed). Also, it gets louder (worse) and is accompanied by what sounds like a rubbing when I take turns.. Is it axle bind? Or should I be concerned?
View 1 RepliesAbout 6 weeks ago I noticed a noise coming from the front driver side wheel area. We had just gotten the tire rotated and once at freeway speed it was like a squealing noise, just like when you have worn brakes. Since then the squealing noise is gone and now it's a faint (hard to describe over text) "whomp whomp" noise as if I have off-road tires. I notice it more on freeways I supposed because it's a smoother straighter surface. On a particular right bending street by our house it's louder. What it might be? Car has 36k miles.

Looking for any steps on how to replace a front wheel stud? Not even sure how to raise calipers/remove rotor (if that's necessary to replace stud)....

When I turn right -- it can only be heard at slow speed, when I start from a stop-- there is a " tapping" type noise that appears to come from the wheel area. Is it possible that I am about to have problems from the CV axle?
