Prius (2004-09) :: Groaning Noise When Going Around Corners

Jul 28, 2016

120K (64 by me & 56 by prior owner during first 6 1/2 yrs) I was having a groaning noise when going around corners especially when headed down hill and hitting the brakes at the same time. I also had a rattle or popping going over bumps. I couldn't isolate the noise and nothing felt loose in the front end when I jacked it up. The dealer said the lower control arm bushings and ball joints needed to be replaced for $1545. I asked about front struts and was told that the control arm bushing and ball joints had to be replaced first before the struts could be examined.

I replaced the control arm assemblies (had to lower front cross member while supporting engine w/large jack and removing lower engine dog bone), ball joints, stabilizer bars and stabilizer bushings myself. Ball joints required removing axles and steering knuckle assembly to remove metal CV dust shield on back side of steering knuckle. (will post procedure later). Had lined up and the noise changed (groaning on corners left and rattle became pronounced on all bumps like the front end was about to fall out). By the way no cracks or excessive wear on any of the rubber components as I have always seen on the Subaru and other cars I had.

Prius (2004-09) :: Low Groaning Noise That Comes From Inside The Cabin

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with my Prius. A few weeks ago, there was a big rainstorm in California, and I accidentally backed into what I think was a storm drain under very deep water. I heard a big thunk, but there was no visible damage to the car. A few days later, I noticed a low groaning noise that comes from inside the cabin, somewhere around the center console/front passenger side. I usually only hear it when I am moving at low/moderate speeds and turning the wheel to the left, although occasionally if the road is bumpy I hear it with my wheels straight ahead. For a couple weeks, I thought the noise only happened when moving-- however, last Friday, I was sitting in the car, which was parked on a hill with the wheels curbed (steering wheel all the way to the left). I turned the car on, and immediately the car started groaning (even though the car was in park). Then, after about 30 seconds, the gas engine turned off (I think that's what happens when the car gets much quieter after idling for a bit) and the noise stopped. SO, it happened when the car was in park as well.

Prius V :: 2012 - Groaning Noise From Rear Brakes?

I brought my prius v back to the dealer for the fourth time because of the groaning noise from the rear brakes. I was told that Toyota is aware of the problem and they are designing a new rear brake. They expect it to be ready for installation after January 1st, 2013. Let's hope it isn't too far after the first of the year.

Phaeton :: 2004 - Steering Wheel Retraction Groaning Noise

Had my 2004 Phaeton in to take care of some smaller interior issues under warranty. One of them was that the steering column makes a groaning noise when it is being retracted. Service advisor told me that the Phaeton technician (who is also the shop foreman - Jim Ellis VW Marietta) told him that this is common with Phaetons and there isn't a realistic fix for it. I've read the post already about the felt strip wearing down, but I'm wondering how many of you have the steering column groaning noise when it's being retracted when the car is shut off? I'm trying to decide whether to push the issue with the dealer or just live with it.

Honda - Cr-v :: 2004 - Groaning Noise When Braking While Traveling At Very Low Speeds

2004 Honda CRV just over 100k miles.

Brakes are now about 8 months old (less than 1k miles/month). Tires are also about that old.

Other new stuff (done by dealer about 4 months ago) includes: ball joints, wheel bearings, control arm.

I had to take it to a mechanic (not a Honda-only mechanic) to get a safety inspection in order to register it in the new place I'm living and he said "Everything looks new!" I had asked him to look specially at the brakes due to the noise described below. He said they seemed fine.

The issue I've been having is as follows: when the car is hot, i.e. after driving 100+ miles , and when traveling at very low speeds, the brakes make a sort of groaning sound. I recently made a 400-mile 1-day trip; no noise when exiting, pulling up to the gas pump, etc. But as soon as I got into the city where I was going, and did a lot of stopping and starting, I would get a noticeable groan coming to lights, stop signs, etc. No noticeable change in brake function. When I just get in the car to make a quick trip after it's been sitting for a day, or a few hours, I do not get this noise.

So, honestly, I'm not worried about safety, just very puzzled. The noise is definitely a recent occurrence--starting about 5 months ago. I would love to have it fixed, but would prefer to be able to direct a mechanic's attention to something specific rather than giving carte blanche to take apart the front end again!

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Groaning Noise From The Front When Reach About 20 MPH

My 2006 f-150 with 71,000 miles has been making a groaning noise in the front when I reach about 20mph and it will intermittently stop for a few seconds and then start again. And when I turn left it completely stops. I have had it to my Ford dealership three times and they replaced my steering shaft and brakes and checked for anything rubbing and have not fixed it. I'm worrying about this every time I take a trip.

Honda - Accord :: 1993 - Loud Whiny Noise When Making Corners

My car started making a loud, high pitched "whooping" and "whining" noise when making corners. The pitch is medium to high and variable. It kind of sounds like wet rubber on glass (like a squeegee). The first time it happened I thought it was a police siren, like when they sound the siren in short bursts "whoop! whoop!". But now the sound is more like a prolonged whine/groan. The sound might be coming from the steering column, but I can't be sure. Its definitely on the driver's side and in the front.

The sound is not related to braking. It doesn't happen on every turn. It can happen when starting from a stop or when already in motion. It happens on both flat ground and hills. At first it seemed to happen on cold days and only in the morning. I think this might have been a coincidence since now it happens throughout the day, every day.

My car is a 1993 honda accord with approximately 315,000 miles.

Just picked up a used 2009 RX350 and noticed the low beam light output is terrible. Very difficult to see, especially when turning corners. Also have a bit of fogging of the headlight assembly covers which I assume can be cleaned up. What is the easiest way to increase light output?

Lexus GX 2010+ :: GX460 Wheels Making Screeching Noise When Turning Around The Corners

New owner of a GX 460. Noticed that when driving in the parking garage and turning around the corners, the wheels make screeching noise. the GX 460 is not a very big SUV but it feels like i'm driving a huge truck when trying to turn.

And also need confirmation that during normal driving, the central differential should be disconnected, which means a yellow icon showing on the dial, i.e., a yellow icon that shows a cross in between the four wheels.

Toyota - Rav4 :: 1999 - Knocking Noise From Front Passenger Wheel While Accelerating Around Corners

A couple weeks ago I started noticing a knocking noise coming from my front passenger wheel. It only happens in drive, while accelerating around corners. I checked the CV joints, all are fine, no cracked boots, moved the boots around and can hear the grease in there and no sign of a leak. The strut boot has broken however. Im thinking bad strut bearings? Since the boot is pretty much non existent it might be corrosion build up?

Mazda :: 2007 - Low Groaning Noise When Driving At Low Speeds

In January I purchased a 2007 Mazda 6 with a manual transmission. For the past several weeks I have noticed a low groaning like sound coming from the front end of the car. It only happens when I'm moving at a slow speed. It's most noticeable when just starting and stopping in either 1st or reverse. I thought it might be the breaks, but it happens even when the brakes are not applied. What this could be? I'd prefer to wait to have it checked when I bring it in for it's scheduled maintenance, but not sure if that would be a risky/expensive decision.

Chevrolet - S-10 :: 2000 - Getting Groaning Noise When Turning The Wheel?

I'm driving a 2000 Chevy S-10 pickup, 5 spd manual, with about 133k miles on. Truck has been great for the 11 years I've owned it. I've had this problem for a while, and for some reason am only getting around to it now, as I've never directly asked a mechanic to fix it or diagnose it. I think because it didn't seem urgent, and out of fear I'll get the runaround on what it actually is.

But now, what was once just a sort of "groaning sound" when I turned the wheel, has now actually turned into some tightness in the wheel itself -- especially if the car is cold or hasn't moved in a while. Here's a video clip of the sound: [URL]...

I suspect it's a problem with the power steering fluid system. I've been parallel parking for years, and don't know if that's what's had an impact.

Passat (B5) :: Groaning Noise Coming From Front End Of 2000 VW

What is causing the noise coming from the front end of my 2000 VW Passat B5 1.8T (73000 miles). When I'm going slowly and turn the wheel all the way to the left, I get a loud, low pitched groaning/moaning sound coming from the drivers side of the front end of the car. This occurs especially when turning at low speeds, such as entering or exiting a parking space, and it also seems like it happens a lot when I'm backing out of a parking space (although it may just be that I notice it more then). It also seems worse when the car has been sitting still for a while. I do not hear such a noise when I am going faster (like turning left). I also don't believe I've ever heard a "knocking" sound in conjunction with this problem.

Could you describe the differences between control arms, tie-rod ends, and maybe explain how the sounds might vary between these two problems? What else could it be?

How could I diagnose this myself? What should I look for? I took it in to my local dealership and they said that they could not reproduce the noise. This is total BS, because it makes the noises ALL THE TIME! They refilled my power steering fluid, but this made absolutely no difference.

Toyota - Corolla :: 2001 - Groaning Noise After Car Turned Off

My '01 Corolla occasionally makes a soft groaning noise after the car is in park and turned off. It doesn't happen all the time, and I haven't been able to correlate it with anything. The noise seems to be coming from the front somewhere. I took it to my mechanic but of course it wouldn't do it for him. What might be causing this?

Golf IV R32 :: Slight / Intermittent Almost Groaning Noise When Reversing

I have some slight, intermittent, almost "groaning" noise when reversing, sounds like coming from the rear, possibly brakes, only when it's cold, only when reversing, is this a brake tolerance thing? Maybe the brakes are rubbing/causing a small vibration that would cause a sound? The pads are nearly brand new, and the brakes don't squeak or anything and performance hasn't changed at all? Just cheap pads or something by PO?

Lexus ES 2007-12 :: Grinding / Groaning Noise Whenever AC Is Turned On

I have a 2007 ES350 with 85k miles. I've noticed that whenever the AC is turned on, there is an audible grinding/groaning type noise coming from the engine bay. If I turn the AC off, the noise immediately stops and returns as soon as I turn it back on.

I've also noticed that the noise only occurs when the car is in drive or reverse. If I switch to park or neutral, the noise immediately stops.

I had the serpentine belt as well as two idler pulleys replaced in hopes of solving the problem but the noise is still present. Any other troubleshooting I can perform to narrow down the problem?
