Today I drove my 2006 G2 Prius with 59,000 miles to the park and had the windows down. I climbed a hill for a good while that had the engine under load and there was a concrete wall beside me, and I could hear a very very faint metallic-like rattle. I mentioned it to my partner who listened and said he couldn't even hear it, so maybe it is just me.
View 2 RepliesI have a '07 Sonata GLS with the 2.4-liter Theta engine and the 4-speed automatic. It has 52k miles on it and has always been serviced regularly. It's been a pretty decent car but is starting to feel a little tired, most notably the worn/bouncy suspension.
Anyway, the other day I was driving down the highway and gave it a little gas to pass a slower car. Doing 60 MPH it downshifted to 3rd (~2000 to ~3300 RPM) and I thought I heard a noise in the engine bay, but I wasn't sure. I ended up needing more power so put it to the floor and as it kicked down to 2nd at ~5000 RPM the rattly noise got a lot more pronounced. Driving around normally I don't hear it but any time I put it to the floor (merging/passing) I will hear the rattle. I can also hear it if I lock it in 2nd gear and give it full throttle up a hill at low speed, like you might do with a stick shift.
It seems like it only does it under load because if I rev it to ~4000 RPM in park in the driveway, there's no noise, even at full throttle. I know the V6s had tensioner issues but I haven't heard much about the 2.4s. I'm not super concerned as it is still under warranty but what might be wrong with it as this is my first Hyundai vehicle, especially in case the dealer can't replicate it.
I have been experiencing a slight issue with my 07 Sonata V6 lately. When I am accelerating, most commonly when already at speed around 80 to 90 km/h, I would hear this 2-3 ticks / clicks when I press lightly or moderately on the accelerator pedal. The car would accelerate fine without any further noises. When I release the pedal, the car slows down a bit, and I press on the pedal again, then the same sound re-appears.
View 2 Repliesyesterday I heard a faint rattle coming from under the hood while the a/c was on, when I had my son turn it off, it went away. Right now it's barely noticeable, but I don't want it to turn into something major. I own a '08 ES with 88,000 miles and all my service is done at the dealership.
View 1 RepliesHas rattle that sounds like it is coming from the centre of the dash? It sounds like a piece of tin sheet metal is rattling faintly. I wouldn't think a fuel line rattle would sounds like that, but maybe I am incorrect? Putting pressure on the dash with your hand doesn't seem to make it stop.
We also get the creek in the l/h side that I had assumed prior that it was from the door seal when the body flexes.
I have had my 2010 GS450h for a few months now and about a month after I bought it, I noticed a faint rattle from the steering column, almost like there is a loose bolt or something. It is getting more noticeable (especially on broken pavement/rough roads) It's annoying and the only issue I have with the car.

View 6 RepliesMy '03 gives a rattle sound under load/acceleration conditions. This does not happen during the warm up period, so it appears that the engine runs lean under acceleration. There is no check engine light on for this. Approx 172k KM, (100k miles). The noise appears worse when it is hot/humid outside. I have run a can of Seafoam through it (half in the crankcase, half in the fuel line), and that doesn't seem to have worked. Therefore, I don't think that it is the injectors. Possibly fuel filter (still original)? Any easy way to test?
View 8 RepliesWhen accelerating up a steep grade the engine will ping (rattling metallic sound) when reaching a certain RPM, but stop pinging as I continue to push the accelerator down and increase the RPM. Should I be concerned? Could it be something else, loose exhaust heat shield or something? Or is this normal behavior for a gasoline engine? My old Honda Fit never had engine ping/knock that i can recall in its 200,000km of service running the same 87 octane gas.
View 15 RepliesI've had this noise on my 92 GT since I bought the car and it hasn't got any worse but I still am wondering what it is in case it's something serious. I hear a rattle/clatter coming from the engine or thereabouts, and it only happens under load (doesn't have to be heavy load, but I can't hear it in neutral or when the clutch is disengaged). It only happens above around 3000 rpm and the frequency of the rattle corresponds to the engine rpm. It's difficult to pinpoint the location of it because it only happens under load. Anyway, I made a short video of it and uploaded it to YouTube....

View 38 RepliesImmediately after my last Jiffy Lube oil change, my 2006 Toyota Matrix now has a faint hissing sound on acceleration. The sound seems to be coming from the engine compartment, kind of near where the glove compartment is. My first thought was that a leaf or piece of paper had gotten in with the cabin air filter when they checked it, but that's not it. The sound is there even with the fan off. There is no noticeable change in performance and no loss of air conditioning. Did they bump into a vacuum hose or something when they changed the oil? What could it be?
View 6 RepliesWe've got a 2012 Hyundai Accent GDI. I've been hearing the rattle "ping" when the engine is under load (accelerating hard or uphill). I've read that this is typical for these engines.
I took it to our local Hyundai dealership since it's still under the 60,000 mile warranty. They updated the computer settings and I put in a fuel additive to clean up deposits. They also told me to buy name brand gas from here on out (Exxon, Shell, Mobil) as these engines don't handle cheap gas well.
Now that I've given you enough of a backstory, here are my questions:
- For those that have experienced the rattle "ping", what did you find fixed the problem?
- Any tips or things to look out for when cleaning the throttle body etc?
So I was changing my spark plugs and 3 of 4 went smooth. but one of them was very tough to get out. after a little while it came out, but.... porcelain was broken up. looked down the hole and saw some pieces. Vacuumed it up with a small hose. saw the pieces come into the vacuum, but i don't think i got them all.
Started the engine and made a terrible rattle sound. turned it off and researched a bit. one hit was on here from a few years back, saying the car ran rough for a sec and then cleared up. Hoping it was kicked out the exhaust. I started it up let it run and it cleared up and idled smooth.
Drove it today and seems fine. Slight click noise when accelerating but not sure if that was there before or I am just being paranoid now. Called some places and they all said same...could have cleared through exhaust, stuck in catalytic converter, damaged the interior walls etc etc.
I first noted a very faint jack hammer type sound from center of bottom of car last week-noticed it once or twice while driving, but then it continued, a little louder, and even continued when I turned the car off for about 5 minutes. Same thing happened when I drove to work the next day, and when I went to get in my car after work, it was still doing it-I think the noise must have lasted all day. Took it to the dealer and he heard it the night I dropped it off but nothing the next day when warranty inspector came out. The service guy did tell me he captured it on the computer read out and it had something to do with the brakes or ?ABS system. Service said they would drive car home and check it out-he got nothing on his long ride home but the next morning when the car was cold, it reproduced the problem. Inspector was due to come back out next day when car was cold, but came later when it had warmed up and did not reproduce, so will not fix it. They tell me is is safe to drive...is it?? And what the heck could this be?

View 2 RepliesLast week as I was returning home I had a strange event in my Prius. I was coasting at about 30 mph when I heard a very faint pop sound a bit like a balloon breaking. It sounded like it came from the right rear area of the car. Afterwards I thought I detected a very faint chemical smell. Could this have been something involving the HV battery?
View 10 RepliesI have determined that I most likely have a bad CV joint - a faint clicking sound while braking that varies with speed that happens with the car in drive, but not in neutral.
I've also found instructions here on how to remove/replace the axle, but I'm wondering if it can be done without separating the tie rod end and removing the ball joint. On other cars I've managed to do this by unbolting the strut, which allowed the hub assembly to flop out enough to be able to slide the axle out of it. Is this possible on the Prius? I have to replace my struts anyway so I was hoping to do it all at once and avoid dealing with potentially frozen suspension components.
Had this happen to me a few times now. Driving down the highway (120kph) in 5th, revving around 3,000 or so and whenever I hit a hill and come onto the gas pedal, I hear a ticking sound coming from up front. The harder I press on the gas - the louder it gets and vice versa.
Only happens in 5th and only under load. Scanned for codes - nothing, looked under the hood - looks normal. Timing belt was done around 56,000km, car has about 67,000km now and is in fantastic shape otherwise.
Spark plugs are still original and I have a new set waiting to go in, drive belts were replaced back in the spring but the tension is correct and all pulleys were checked okay at the time.
I am having problems with starting my 06 sonata. When I put the key in the ignition there is power, but when I turn the key the engine does not start. There is a faint click. This seems intermittent as most times the car starts normally. The battery shouldn't be the problem as I replaced it not long ago.
View 4 RepliesHyundai Elantra 01 GLS. The main problem is that the airbag light is on and stays on no matter what. This is my girlfriends old car and she tells me that a couple people told her it had something to do with a faulty/corroded connection or something like that... I have been working on this car for about a year and I am finally to the point where I am just ironing out the little kinks. The old engine was bad along with a lot of other stuff, and I swapped it out for a good motor with less miles on it.
I also have recently replaced the alternator and instrument cluster just to name a couple repairs. Now the two things that I want to get settled are the airbag light and the check engine light. The check engine light comes on sometimes and I am almost positive it either needs a new 02 sensor or cat since when it was ran through a code reader those were the two options my mechanic told me it could be. I also hear a gurgling/crackling faint sound coming from the drivers side dashboard/engine area. I am not sure what this is. How can I get the airbag light off ?
