Prius (Gen 2) :: Codes Appeared / Cruise Control Is Engaged

Jun 5, 2016

The 12v battery is 3 1/2 years old.

I rebuilt the HV battery in May 2015. I replaced 3 modules and took the pack through 3 charge/discharge cycles using Hybrid Automotive grid charger and simple discharger. I also cleaned the cooling fan.

All was fine for a month or so. Then I got the trouble lights but the obdlink I had wouldn't show the codes. I noticed a decrease in mileage and a slight hesitation upon acceleration from a stop.

I finally got the mini vci and a win xp laptop to find the codes:

P3000

P0A82

C1310

After maybe a week or so, the ICE wouldn't start and, being busy, I parked it for a while. About a month later, I pulled codes:

P0AA6 with detail codes 526 and 613

P3000 with detail code 123

P0A82 with no detail codes but it indicates "hybrid battery pack cooling fan 1 performance/stuck off.

I connected the grid charger and the HV fan engaged, as it should. I cleared codes and took a drive, while monitoring with Techstream. I watched the fan modes climb to 6, during driving and idling, over about a half hour period. Not sure if this means anything, but I've read that people can hear the fan from the driver's seat when it's running at 3 or 4- I forget which. Well, at 3, or maybe 4, I couldn't hear it. Even standing at the rear door, with my ear against the vent. Though, there was ICE and parking lot noise to contend with. Once it got to 6, I could hear it easily.

Battery health, at that time: With fan at 6, temp of batt tb1 through tb3 was 51.6 c, 56.5 c, 50.4 c.

Battery blocks voltage ranged from 16.05 to 16.15. Internal resistance ranged from .024 to .026 ohms.

Out of necessity, I've been driving this car again, for months now. The lights came back and the codes were still P3000 with detail code 123, P0A82 with the addition of C1310. I don't see a detail code in the same place but there is a field that says "detailed freeze DTC 156". I assume this may be a detail or sub code. Nothing has been preventing me from starting the car. But months ago there had been 2 occasions when, after having driven several miles and parked for a short time, then taking the freeway home, the car would idle high going up an overpass. On these occasions, the MFD shows a low SOC with only one purple bar. The first time this happened, it took around 10 miles before the SOC would creep up. The second time, I had it on cruise control and, while ascending a grade, the car jerked violently and acted as if I were flooring and letting off the gas in quick succession, about 4 times. I disengaged cruise control and took hills more slowly. The high idle up the hills backed off as the battery SOC increased. This time the SOC started in increase within a few minutes, as I would expect normally. I imagine that the electric motor was turning off and on, when the car was jerking, due to a low SOC.

These symptoms cleared up in a few days, apart from the hesitation on accelerating from a stop, and I've been driving it ever since. A few weeks ago, I noticed the car had major difficulty accelerating. I'll floor it and it barely moves, taking several seconds longer than it should to get up to speed. The SOC is stuck at 1 purple bar. I got the car home and turned it off. When I turned it back on, the SOC increased very quickly, only once. I now can't replicate that. The SOC simply will not go above one bar.

Another odd thing. When I'm creeping down the road, at say, 25mph, and I let off the throttle, the car just keeps moving as if cruise control is engaged.

Prius (2004-09) :: Cruise Control Engaged And Car Accelerated When Brakes Applied

My 2005 Toyota Prius gave me confidence. Here's what happened:

I was driving on the Interstate with the cruise control set at 70 mph. Seeing traffic stopped ahead, I applied the brakes for a moment to slow, then released the brake to coast. Much to my surprise, the cruise control was still engaged and the car accelerated. I applied the brakes again, manually turned off the cruise control, then was able to coast. I drove for another half-hour without incident until the following afternoon when I drove again, experiencing a much more serious problem.

I had just turned left, and was straightening the wheels when I heard, and felt, a loud "snap" in the steering wheel, immediately upon which I knew the steering wheel was disconnected and I could no longer steer the car. Very, very fortunately, and only because I was already nearly stopped, I was able to stop the vehicle without incident.

However, I immediately recognized that, had this happened in almost any other scenario than being nearly parked, the outcome would have been markedly different. The steering wheel is completely loose, not controlling anything, and all the many steering wheel controls are equally disconnected, including the driver's air bag (SRS), something that I would have needed, but wouldn't have worked, had I crashed into oncoming traffic or an Interstate median.

Prius (Gen 2) :: List Of Error Codes, Cruise Control Won't Work

This is a 2006 prius with 180k on it, that we have had since 2007 and it has been wrecked. (hit a deer) It had problems when the coolant flow control was hooked up in reverse after it got back from the body shop, but the toyota dealership fixed it. 12v battery replaced a year ago and showing 12.7v with no drain and 11.9 with a drain, on the onboard monitor.

My wife got gas yesterday and after restarting the prius, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. ESV, Check Engine, RED TRIANGLE of Impending Doom. It was also sluggish(hybrid drive didn't seem to work, only gas) and did not seem to charge the battery. Also the battery fan was very loud but working fine. These were the same symptoms exhibited when the flow valve was reversed. Also the battery was showing 1 bar of charge when she got home. The cruise control would also not work.

So now, I take it to the parts store and connect the computer and get these codes

c1289 MV System Regen Malfunction Current

1310 Malfunction system current

p0a80 Replace Hybrid Battery

P3022 Battery Block 12 weak

p1116 Coolant temperature sensor stack

p1121 coolant flow control valve

I know that the p0a80 is bad and the p3022 means there is a weak cell, but I am having trouble here:

On the way back from the store, the hybrid battery charged into the green, which it WOULD NOT do earlier, but the hybrid drive did not seem to be pulling the car. The car cranks and gas engine runs fine.

I was wondering quite a few things here.

Would the coolant codes be remnants of the last problem and not deleted from last time?

The codes had no date that I saw.

Its just that all these errors and symptoms together make no sense when I am trying to troubleshoot and figure out a course of action.

Saturn - Ion :: Short Ratcheting Noise When Cruise Control Is Engaged

I have a 2004 Saturn Ion and when the cruise control is engaged it makes a short ratcheting sound if I go up an incline. It sounds like it happens in front of the stick shift and it doesn't affect the rpm's or the power of the engine, it's just a weird noise. It's done that for years and hasn't increased or changed, I'm just wondering what causes it, I've never heard a car make a sound like that before.

Honda - Accord :: 2003 - Cruise Control Switch Will Not Stay Engaged

The "Cruise Main" switch on my 2003 Honda Accord will not stay engaged. When I push it, the Cuise Main lights up in the dash board and I can operate cruise control, but when I release the Cruise Main switch it doesn't stay on. I've tried electrical tape to hold the switch in (holds for limited time), and am thinking about bypassing the switch altogether. I don't mind if the Cruise Main is on all the time. I know I could replace the switch, but am looking for a zero cost solution.

Mercury - Montego :: Cruise Control On And Engaged Brake Acts Like Engine Is Off At 70 Mph

My 2005 Mercury Montego has a weird issue with the cruise control. I have already taken it to a Ford dealer once. They claimed the switch on the brake pedal was the issue. It isn't.

At 70 mph, with cruise control OFF, take foot off accelerator and push on brake pedal. Works great.

At 70 mph, with cruise control On and engaged, the brake acts like the engine is off. It is very hard to push. It is like the engine is OFF and the vacuum assist is gone. Press really hard, and the car will slow down. Jab the brake once first (hard), then apply brakes, and it is fine. Push the cancel button on the steering wheel, and all is well. The few times I have looked, the tachometer has not moved. Car has CVT.

I bought this car new, and know it didn't always do this. And certainly shouldn't. A panic stop is scarier than it already would have been. Car has around 62000 miles on it.

Mechanic wrote that he observed the issue in a test dive and tested it following repair and it now works. I don't get this at all.

Ford Excursion :: Cruise Control Engaged - Chugging / Vibration Going Downhill

I like to drive with cruise control engaged but I find I can't do that in my new (well, 182K 2005 6.0L) Excursion. It's holds speed just fine, but if I top a rise and start going downhill - basically when no effort needed to maintain speed - it starts chugging and shaking the whole truck real bad. It feels and sounds bad, can't be good for it (or so I've assumed in my head). It's a real staccato feeling as if fuel is being applied less than a second, stopped, reapplied. Is this something unique to the diesel (my first diesel), an issue with the cruise control (vacuum, electronic?), or what?

Prius (Gen 1) :: P3191 / P3101 Error Codes Appeared

2003 Prius. Situation as follows:

Malfunction Indicator Lamp lit on start-up during sub-freezing weather for failure to start (P3191 and P3101 codes loaded). Occurred twice (so far).

Dealer diagnosed as possible fuel pump problem, though fuel pressure nominal and held pressure after engine shut-off.

Independent mechanic (using EG011-03) diagnosed following:

Diagnosis codes: P3191 (engine does not start) and P3101 with information code 205.

Circuit opening relay was fine.

Fuel Pressure was normal (~45 psig) and held after engine shut off.

Coolant temperature - 9 deg C

Engine RPM - 1200

MG1 Torque value - 0

Installed ECU Part Number - 89661-47053, calibration # 14705301, 14705302

EG011-03 decision tree leads to replace Engine Control Module with newer part number.

Took back to dealer, who indicated still possible fuel pump problem (and reluctant to replace ECM).

Prius (2004-09) :: P0A80 Error Codes Appeared, Still Pending

I recently replaced my engine water pump at 164,000 miles on my 2007 Prius, the car sat for 3 weeks while waiting to gather needed parts, i.e., water pump, coolant and Airlift system for adding coolant fluid. After installing the new water pump the car ran rough for 5-10 minutes upon initial crank (parked for 3-weeks). I took a 20 minute test drive around the neighborhood that evening, outside temperature around 65 degrees F, and car ran fine. SOC looked ok, bars moving between Blue and Green, everything appeared normal.

The next morning, I backed out of my driveway and the Red Triangle of Death appeared on the dash so I parked the car.

That evening I hooked up OBDII ELM327 scanner using Engine Link and picked up 2 separate P0A80 error codes, 1 of them was pending. I disconnected the Aux battery for 3-5 mins to clear the error's, Red Triangle of Death was cleared, then drove the Prius for 20 minutes with no errors or alarms. SOC seemed to be normal. OBDII ELM327 scanner showed the HV batteries were charging at same level, 16.8V and Aux battery was registering at 14.0 Volts.

The next morning, after 20 minutes of driving the Red Triangle of Death appeared, and shortly after I experienced loss of power, with sporadic engine idle and interior traction battery fan was on. Luckily I had made it to work and was able to pull into a vacant parking lot.

I did notice that around the time the Red Triangle of death came on this morning the SOC dropped quickly to 1 Purple bar and was slow to charge then shortly after came the loss of power and sporadic engine idle followed by interior battery fan.

Prius (Gen 1) :: 2002 Red Triangle, PS, Check Engine Light With Codes Appeared

I have a 2002 Prius that needs work. The red triangle, PS, and check engine light are all on. It has these codes:

P3100 - 175 (HV ECU internal error. Motor Inverter Current Sensor Malfunction)

p3125 - 287 (Motor Inverter Finv. Inverter Internal Short)

c1259 (HV System Regenerative Malfunction)

I suspect the inverter or even worse the MG2 has burnt windings.

BTW the "infamous" inverter pump seems to be working. I can hear it and see the fluid in the reservoir move.

I suspect it is more a symptom than a problem and will disappear when the real problem is fixed.

Prius (Gen 2) :: Cruise Control Not Engaging

My cruise control doesn't work anymore. There is no blinking/cruise icon on the dash--period. Is this the result of the button being worn out or a relay/fuse? My little tank has 231k, so it has been used. BTW, I can't seem to find a write up for replacing the switch. Is there one?

Prius V :: During Driving The Cruise Control Went Out

We drive a 2012 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) 5 with a little under 20,000 miles. This is the situation:

Yesterday afternoon we were driving and the dynamic cruise control went out. The "PCS" indicator is now flashing, and the error code "E3" popped up where the cruise light used to be. If I turn cruise control off and then on again the E3 code will show up after a second or two.

I discovered later that if I turn the car off, turn cruise on right away, and switch to regular cruise that I can use regular cruise. The PCS indicator still flashes though. The interesting thing is that when the E3 code is up, I am unable to use either type of cruise control unless I turn the car off and switch to regular cruise right away. I am not really sure what happened or what to do next.

Toyota - Camry :: 2006 - Horn Toots When Cruise Engaged?

Strange problem that just happened last evening. When I push the cruise button the horn toots and the panel cruise light comes on/off. However, the cruise control will not work.

If I toot the horn, again the cruise panel light comes on/off as well. The cruise control worked fine earlier that day.

What this may be and where to start looking? My first thought is to disconnect the battery for a few hours and hopefully reset the computer.

Prius (Gen 3) :: Stalled Out On Highway From Cruise Control At 65 Mph

My Prius just stalled out on highway from cruise control @ 65 mph, so I coasted luckily off an exit, and before coming to complete stop the whole dash went black with exception of power steering failure warning light. I had it towed, at my cost of $95, to dealer for troubleshooting. They found that the fuel sensing system/indicator had worn, and cost for repair is $422+, as not under any warranty or recall. Fuel sense indicator worn out @ 105,145 miles...

Prius V :: Cruise Control On Steep Hills

In ordinary cars, the cruise control (CC) only has control of the throttle. That is to say, when the car encounters a hill, the CC system increases the throttle. Coming down a hill, the CC unit will reduce throttle. If the speed increases too much, the CC unit can not reduce the speed of the car. On especially steep hills, the speed may well become too high.

In contrast in my Prius v, I find that the CC holds the speed study even on steep downgrades. This is possible due to the hybrid system which regenerates power. Even on steep grades, the CC system holds the speed rock steady at the set point.

Prius (Gen 3) :: Cruise Control Engaging Intermittently

Had an intermittent problem with my Cruise Control engaging. The CC light would come on when the CC on/off button was pressed.

When the CC would engage the "set" light would come on and the speed would hold. On occasion the CC would not engage.

I looked are reread the owners manual.....NOTHING! I was double checking to make sure there was nothing different with the hybrid. (I have owned Toyota for a very long time...since 88').

Since the Hybrid is new to me, "shifting" is a little bit different. There is a "B" on the shifter which is mentioned for "downshifting". There is no mention that once you are done with downshifting that you must shift back to "D" for normal operation. The only mention is not to run in "B" for an extended amount of time.

So, when you are in the "B" position, the CC with disengage.

Prius (Gen 2) :: Cruise Control Only Works Intermittently

First it wouldn't turn on, at times now it at times won't work even though the light is on, on the dash. At other times it works as expected. I dun think it's the 12V battery, because when only the center console is on in diagnostics the battery reads 12.2-12.4 and 14.5 + when the engine is on.

Prius (2004-09) :: Cruise Control Just Quit

Mine just quit on me. Nearly 180K. 2008 Gen 2. I watched that youtube video, they were working on a Corolla. Seems easy enough, it's a pricey part though. It's called an airbag clock spring. I don't think it's the stalk. The button feels the same as it ever did.

Prius (2004-09) :: CEL Came On In Cruise Control Mode

Very very odd thing happened. Driving up from Houston to Colorado yesterday. Snow tires mounted in preparation for the snow in NM and CO. Around 300 mi into the trip, the CEL (check engine light) came on. I was on cruise control, I did not notice the lack of power. Checking the battery, it was in the purple. I first opened the gas cap and screwed it back in. I figured the change in elevation or temperature may have had something to do with the CEL. Nothing. Gas tank was a quarter full.

At Lubbock, I pulled over and filled up. I played with the rubber gasket on the gas cap but decided it was going to be more trouble than I was prepared to deal with, without any tools. CEL stayed on for another 30minutes or so while I navigated through the city, covering another 20 miles or so. After a pitstop to pick up OJ, I started the car and the CEL was off.

Here are the variables:

Elevation delta - +3000 ft
Temp delta - -10F

The only thing I can think of is that the hybrid battery is getting long in the tooth (2008 MY, 103k mi), the wind in the high plains chewed through the battery power, and the long length of being in low charge got the ECU to confuse itself into thinking that the hybrid battery has bad cells, which it probably has a few weak cells.

Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: Using Cruise Control For Better Mpg?

If i am driving say for 15 mins on the highway at 65-75 mpg with a few brakes and accelerations in between due to other cars around, is it better to use the cruise control (i have adaptive cruise control on my prius v) and let the car figure out the throttle and braking or is it better to just drive by myself without using cruise control? i read about the different pulse-glide driving methods.
