2006 Prius (options 3) 140,000 + mileage. New tires, front brakes and waterpump. Everything else original. Noise and vibration in steering when turning to the right. Driving straight or turning to left normal sound. If i just turn slighly to the right and then straighten out, over and over the noise follows the turn.
View 3 RepliesI've got a 1993 ford aerostar. Today, my steering wheel started shaking/rattling when I turn the steering wheel. Seems to be more obvious when turning right rather than left, and is only obvious at low speeds.
Only thing out of usual was that the front had been on jacks for a few days for an unrelated (starter) repair. What to check or how to isolate? I imagine it has to do with the power steering but not sure what to check.
so I was heading off the freeway to take my exit at night. Didn't see there was a little curb island between the main freeway and exit. Went with the car over the curb and my right passenger tire went out.
I changed the tire and driven off, then noticed the car sound got much louder all of a sudden and when I turn the steering wheel right or left, I hear or feel a heavy sharp sensation- yet the car turns fine, it just sounds louder when I press the gas and when I turn the steering wheel I can feel my feet vibrating a bit and a soft/sharp squeak sound comes out.
What could this be?
The problem started a few months back and has been getting progressively worse. Unfortunately for my Prius I have been in the middle of remodeling my house so I have been neglecting the problem and now it is time to face it before something bad happens.
So, It is a 2005 Prius with 189k+ miles on it. I started getting a vibration/clunking noise in the front end while driving with the steering wheel centered. It also turns on the traction control alert and sometimes slows the car down when turning and the only way to get it to stop is to turn the wheel the other way. It started only happening at higher speeds of 65mph+ but progressively got worse until it now happens as low as 35mph.
I thought that it was the drive axle as it seemed to be characteristic of that with the vibration (When the problem first started it seemed to only happen when accelerating, but now happens all the time), so I replaced the LH drive axle as well as the sway bar tie rod (The joints were very worn and loose), but the problem still exists.
Our 2012 Prius with now 17,000 miles in 8 months has developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially far to the right at low speeds.
The first time the dealer identified it as a failed intermediate shaft and replaced it under warranty. Shortly after we told them it was starting to make the noise again, but they claimed they couldn't replicate the sound and anything they heard was normal 'linkage' (whatever that is). Shortly thereafter the clunking progressed so we took it in for now the third time, and they confirmed the problem, spoke with Toyota who said we must have had a bad part, and replaced it again.
I just bought a 2008 LS600 Obsidian with Exec package. Happy with the car except for some steering vibration at low speeds when turning. Took it to Newport Lexus...they say..."normal for an AWD LS600".
View 11 RepliesCrossing 90K soon and noticing some vibration in the steering wheel. Have also been trying (in vain) to locate a clicking suspension noise in the rear.
Decided to pop the Red Sled up on stands and tighten stuff up. Few loose nuts in the rear (sway bar end links and the trailing arm bolts) so retorqued those. However, noise has only decreased, not gone away.
In the front, things are even worse. Tie rods are due for replacement (boots broken and right one had water in it) as well as ball joints. But the worse part is that the steering rack is whining when turning in either direction.
Thinking of tackling the front end work aside from alignment. Doesn't look hard so I do not fear that. But the steering rack is another beast entirely.
It feels like I am having a front bearing issue, when turning the steering wheel to the right I feel a slight vibration in the steering, need to know which one is going out,??? I have already replaced the passenger side twice It just seems to not tighten completely as I can still move the tire slightly while up on a jack...

On a hard left high speed turn, it vibrates under load. Also while under throttle when making a second gear left hand turn.
Noise will come and go when going over dips at high speeds under load. I have already replaced the left Half shaft.
I am a master mechanic and have had success with changing a half shaft on a similar situation. Looking for other possibilities before I throw another half shaft at it.
So I have a 2004 gti that makes a very loud noise when i turn the wheel even slightly to the left there is also a vibration that shakes the whole right side of the car. I assumed based on the sound and vibration that it was the wheel bearing. the bearing was shot but when i replaced it nothing changed. so it has a brand new wheel bearing and the cv joint is good ive already checked it everything seems to be as it should. i cant think of anything else it could be. What the problem could be caused by?
View 11 RepliesI had this "whirring" noise when slowing down...it only happens when the car has been driven around for awhile (20mins etc). It started about a week ago and I just ignored it. To me, it seems like the noise is only apparent when slowly down BUT that might be because I hear it at low speeds where at high speeds, its drowned out by road noise. The noise seems to be coming from the front drivers side (either under the hood or front drivers side tire).
Today, it was making the noise much louder and when pulling into work...I tried to turn and it made a grinding noise. Turning the steering wheel makes a grinding noise and I can feel the grinding feedback on the steering wheel.
Do you think it's the power steering pump that is making both the whirring sound and the grinding noise?
The car is a 2000 corolla ce 4spd auto. How much would the fix be if it's power steering? (and how long would it take)
This summer my power steering went out. I replaced the steering rack with a remanufactured rack, which failed. I got the replacement rack replaced by the remanufacturer and installed by a different shop. Same problem: SEVERE vibration when turning hard right followed by the PS error code, or just little twitchy motions when driving. I'm having the second shop take a look at it again this monday as I suspect that this is a data processing issue.

Fault will go away on some turns but is generally consistent and easily duplicated. Took it to the dealer and they are stumped as well -- follow up appointment next week.
I bought an 09 Accent and love the car, good mileage and actually quiet. I have developed a noise when I turn my steering wheel. It is not there when the car is cold, but after a few moments, when I turn a corner, I hear sort of rubber on rubber sound as I turn the steering wheel.
View 2 RepliesWhen turning the steering wheel slowly while from a stop or slow speed there is a grinding sound coming from the front end. It isn't very loud but you can also feel it in the steering wheel.
Is there a common thing/problem with these? I know there isn't a pump. There isn't any kind of a vibration or wobble at highway speed.
When I turn the steering wheel I hear what sounds like a frictional noise...like a rubbing. I have checked the tires and they are ok. I have checked the Power steering fluid and it seems fine but I did add a little. I am going to wait a little time to see if the additional PW fluid works.

My 2010 Wolfsburg Tig makes rubbing noises when I turn the wheel but not moving. The noise sounds from the wheel shaft. The noise goes away when the car is moving. What's noise? Is it a normal noise for Tig?
View 6 RepliesI own a 2009 Scion tC, has about 70k miles on the car. I am experiencing a squeaky noise when turning the steering wheel left or right, as well as accelerate and braking. A friend and I jacked up the car, listen to the noise while the engine was running. We were able to duplicate the noise and it seems like its coming from the tie rod area, inner tie rod that is connected to the rack and pinion. Do it needs to be greased? keep in mind that for my car, i will have to replace the whole tie rod, can't grease it because it doesn't have a Zerk fitting. Also, when i push down on the passenger side fender, the squeaky noise reappear. noise is coming from passenger side. This has been going on for about 2 months now.

Ive taken it to the dealer at least 8 times and they replaced struts , but it still makes this noise.I also called the main Suzuki customer office and complained. They told me its just one of the characteristics of the new Xl7.
View 4 RepliesRecently on my gen 6 with about 68k miles I have noticed a very pronounce noise when turning the steering wheel whether the car is stationary or in motion. It makes a loud creaking/popping noise and it cant be heard from outside the car. The noise happens no matter which way I turn the steering wheel. I know Toyota has had problems with their intermediate steering shafts.
View 5 RepliesI have a power steering pump that makes a moaning noise when turning. Normally this means your fluid is low, but mine is full. Is it possible the reservoir is clogged not allowing fluid into the pump? When you take the cover off the reservoir the fluid is frothy so you know the pump is cavitating.
