I have had my PIP for just about one month now and I have only filled up twice. This car is awesome! I noticed when I filled up the last few times that the last block on the fuel gauge started blinking and my miles to empty reading was pretty low. However, when I filled up the tank, it only took around 9,2 gallons. Doesn't this car have a 10.6 gallon tank?
View 19 RepliesAs I was trying to use up as much E10 before refueling with E0 I was watching the miles to empty and noticed what seems strange, to me. When driving in EV mode, with the ICE off the miles to empty kept falling! Apparently miles to empty somehow includes EV miles. So I checked the MTE both before and after charging and saw no change which indicates EV miles don't count. So now I would like to know what does MTE mean?
View 19 RepliesI just filled up my gas tank and when I turned on my car the gas light turned on and the needle read empty. But before I put gas, the gas light wasn't on yet and. Was at 1/4 of a tank. Maybe I filled it up too much and it'll resolve itself after the gas goes down?
It's a 10.5 if it matters.
MY 2000 300M has a problem with the fuel gauge. When over 1/2 a tank and just under the full mark the gauge will randomly drop down to empty and turn on the low fuel light then go back to the correct reading and will do this over and over again. my mechanic has looked at the car believes it's the sending unit. Just wanted a second opinion before I spent the money for a fuel pump module for the car.
View 7 RepliesI pumped 7.4 gallons of gas into my prius plug-in and the fuel gauge does not register the gas going into the gas tank. The gauge was down to four bars and after the gas was put in, it did not change. The trip odometer has me at 114 miles left, on what I measure as 10.4 gallons. Toyota care was contacted and is trying to figure out what to do next ad are two Toyota dealerships who have never heard of such a thing before.

The gauge appears to be struck with 9 bars ON after 185 miles traveled!, Any fix to a stuck fuel Gauge indication?

Anyways, the reason I thought I needed to fill up was that the gas gauge was down to one bar. However I was only able to add 8.3 gallons. I thought 1 bar=1 gal but that turned out to be inaccurate.

Bought the car six months ago.Found out 2 weeks later we couldn't put gas in it. Dealership refused to fix it because we bought as is. So we managed to find one gas station in a 20 Mile radius that we could put gas in it.It takes around 10 minutes to put half a tank in. Shortly after that the gas gauge started to fluctuate from full to empty. And the check engine finally came on. Had the the check engine light checked.Fuel level sensor A was faulty. Took it to a local Goodyear in stead of the dealer ship. The sensors were 119.00 a piece and the labor was 145.00 to replace both. Had both replaced .Fuel gauge is working correctly now. But still having issue putting gas in car.
2 weeks ago, I noticed the fuel gauge doesn't return to EMPTY when the engine is off. I didn't worry much as the actual movement of the gauge seemed accurate as I was using up the fuel. I figured it might fix itself during my next fuel fill up. Nope....continued staying at the fuel level and not returning to EMPTY. A few days ago, I noticed it went back to EMPTY when the engine was off, but it took approx. 5 minutes. Now it doesn't go back to EMPTY.
View 9 RepliesThis just gets stranger by the month. I could have sworn when I first got this 2011 Sonata that the console read 341 after filling it up for the first time. I thought it had said that after I filled it the second time (just after Hurricane Sandy - yes, before the long lines - I was lucky) and it read 329. On those occasions the console had read approx 67 & 69 miles to empty. I know I filled it with 87 the second time around. The first time may have been with 89. And when it stopped at 14.x I thought to myself, hmm, didn't it fill to 15.x the first time? Weird. So I went on with my life.
This past weekend it read 50 miles to empty and so I filled it again with 87 (same gas station I should point out). And just like the last time, before this time, it filled with 14.1xx and read 288 miles to empty. It just seems to me that "Miles to Empty" has slowly gone down. On the third filling I believe it may have read 303 to empty.
Is it me? I am imagining things here. Could have that much sludge/dirt/whatever it my tank because of the gas station I visited or the 87 and not 89 that I have been putting in? Oil and filter were changed in mid October and then again in mid March. Thats about to happen again on the 28th but also to have the required NYS Inspection done. What should I say to them if anything? Could I have picked that crappy of a local area gas station?
Just wondering about the "miles to empty meter", should I disregard it when I have high mpg? (50-60 mpg)

View 19 RepliesJust bought a used 2010 prius II about 2 weeks ago with 10000 miles on it. As I've been driving I feel the consumption display is misleading. It averages around 52-53 mpg, but I'm only getting about 480 miles before I'm running on empty. The tank capacity is 12 gallons right? If so I should be getting at least low-mid 500's before I need to fill up again. Hopefully I'm calculating something wrong and its not the car itself.
View 16 RepliesMy 2006 Prius has 165,000 miles. I haven't had any major issues but twice in the last 2 weeks, I've had my fuel gauge go from low (2-3 bars), to one bar, to having the "add fuel" message in less than a half hour. The second time I actually did run out of gas so it's not just that the gauge is faulty. When I ran out of gas, my battery also appeared on it's last bar. After putting gas in it, the car ran fine and the battery perked up. The only recent maintenance was break pad and disk replacements but I've not noticed any drag or difficulty braking.
View 8 RepliesDriving on my original tank from dealer today from Upstate NY to NYC. On the way my C had 4 bars to begin then went to 3, then 2 after about 90 miles of traveling at avg of about 55mph. I watched the cruising distance go down to 1 but I still had 2 bars on my fuel gauge (and my crusing distance was conservative compared to my mpg reading the whole trip, which was hovering around 58mpg).
The gauge went from 2 bars to one flashing bar in about 1 minute. I pulled into a gas station about 2 miles ahead and put in about 5 gallons... this put the fuel gauge up to 3/4s or about 3 bars above the halfway mark. What gives? I know there are fuel gauge issues but I thought with two bars I would have had plenty of time before I needed to fill up on these roads with these mpgs.
When the 04 Prius is turned on the Gauge starts at one small left bar (empty) then Jumps to all bars lit (full) and starts to blink , and blink, and blink. The tank is almost full.

All has been well in just over a month of driving the car and about 3300 miles logged. The 12v, Aux battery was dead from the car sitting on the lot for so long (I replaced with a new OEM Toyota 12v battery) After a week of the car experiencing dim headlights, and various other electronics

How to travel at freeway speeds in a Prius PHV and cause the EV miles to deplete?
To explain, I regularly travel between two homes with charging capabilities. One is three miles from the highway, the other one mile. If I use EV driving to and from the highway, and travel on the highway in HV above 65 MPH, I arrive at the other destination with about 10 miles of unused EV mile capability. I would like to use this extra electricity to improve my HV mileage.
I am very disappointed with my Toyota Plug-in because I have only had it 2 months and have 1400 miles on car. When I first charged it up with the 110 volt charger supplied with the car, I got 13.5 miles to use up before the car went off battery. Then on recharges, every two or three times when the battery recharged the usable mileage dropped by a 1/10 a point. I now have only 9.5 miles to use before I go off battery. When I first got the car I could go to work and have 3 miles extra to go home on. Now I cannot get all the way to work. I wonder how low it is going to go? I took it into Gladstone Toyota and had the service department look at it. They said after they recharged it and found it to be only 9.5 and that there is nothing they can do unless the red warning light comes on saying that the battery is defective. I asked them how low the battery would go and still considered normal, and they said they did not know. So I guess I will keep loosing free electric miles.
My getting progressive lower usable mileage has nothing to do with my driving habits as they have been the same since I started driving the car.
