I just bought a used 2004 F-350, 4x4, crew cab, short bed, 6.0L diesel. I'm having a WTF moment on fuel. Gage indicates just under 1/4 of a tank of diesel but the on-board computer is flashing like crazy stating 5 miles to empty, what the hell is that all about?
View 1 RepliesI bought a 2006 F250 6.0L a couple of months ago, from a dealership. It's been bulletproofed already, has an intake, coolant filter kit. Has 95k (mileage). Today, my fuel gauge dropped to empty from 3/4 of a tank for a couple of miles and set off the CE light. I hooked my scan tool to it, to clear the code (P0460).
After just checking other things out with the scan tool. I cleared it and went on... I had to run to the store, later on... I was pulling out of the neighborhood and the gas pedal was a lot more "touchy" and the truck, responded to it and it launched pretty good and blew a good amount of black smoke.
Do any of you think this has/or had a tuner on it and I may have activated it with my scanner?
Ever since January My fuel gauge has been acting up big time. I can have any amount of gas in my tank at any given time and the fuel gauge will fall to empty resulting in the fuel and check engine light coming on. The gauge will then return to its position (it still doesn't read correctly) and the check engine light will stay on. I took it to the ford dealer and they said to replace the entire fuel sending unit assembly. I bought the oem motorcraft fuel sending unit assembly and did it myself. The only problem is, I still have the issue. I'm currently checking fuses and relays, By the way, my truck is a 2004 f250 fx4 5.4
View 2 RepliesI had a fuel sender failure a couple of weeks ago. 60k mi.
Basically: freeway driving, fuel gauge read 1/8 tank remaining, computer indicated "10 miles till empty" but the car ran out of gas. Fuel sender, in the fuel tank turned out to be the malfunction.
Towed to the dealer...they had never, ever seen this before.
I get the car back next week, just want to bookmark this thread in case any members (God forbid) have this problem now or in the future.
I still have faith in my Lexus, but want to share as this failure was very unusual.
The installation of the new 50 gal. Titan tank went well overall. Start up was smooth with no leaks but the fuel gauge is showing empty with about 45 gallons in the tank.
The sending unit was properly oriented ("clocked") so I'm guessing the electrical connector is not secure at the top of the sending unit. Not sure I can reach the connector without lowering the tank somewhat.
I recently replaced my gas tank in my Sundance, it was getting very rusty around the sending unit area and was starting to leak. Everything is back together and it is running well with no leaks. The new problem that it has, when the car is running, the gas gauge shows less than empty, even though it has a considerable amount of gas in it. When I shut the car off, the gas gauge slowly moves up to where it normally would be when it would be running. Did I somehow mess up the ground or did I cross something? This is my daily beater car and need a working gauge.
View 1 RepliesI have an 03 f350 4x4 cc long bed and I seem to be having a problem with my fuel gauge. It doesn't show the true amount of what's in the tank and because of that I have run out of fuel a few times.
sometimes when I'm driving the light will come on and the gauge will drop all the way to empty then a little later it will go to almost full even with only putting 10 gals in the tank.
Any fix for this or do I need to replace the sending unit?
I have a 2001 f250 with the 5.4. from what I have read i should have the 38 gallon tank. i have been really questioning the accuracy of my fuel gauge on empty with the light on 25 gallons and the fuel pump will click off and after i drive i can park and my fuel gauge will read lower than what it was when i pulled into the driveway with. me and the wife went driving yesterday and we pulled back into the driveway on half a tank this morning I went to go run some errands and when i started the truck the gauge was almost on a quarter of a tank my driveway is flat and after driving for about 35 minutes the gauge was still in the same spot and did not move up nor down.
I have a locking gas cap cover so i know someone is not taking gas out. I have changed the fuel filter and tried numerous different fuel system cleaners to try and see if maybe the contacts on the float in the tank are dirty nothing has changed or gotten any better. I have checked the wire harness from the top of the tank and followed it up under the hood and found no drop in voltage or cracked or damaged wires. I checked with my multi-meter I used my fluke meter not some cheap one. Don't know if the gauge is reading less or more from getting gas i am thinking it is showing less than what is in the tank. What could be my problem?
Ok so the fuel gauge says empty and the low fuel light stays on even though the tank is full. I'm assuming its either the gauges or the sending unit. If it is the sending unit where is it located on this car?
View 4 RepliesAs I was driving to work yesterday I noticed my fuel gauge going from half tank all the way to full going down the highway. I started looking at the rest and they seem to be in there normal spots. I looked up and watched the outside temp go from 40 degrees to 5. This morning the fuel gauge goes straight to full and the outside temp bounces between 2 degrees and 10. What may be going on to cause this?

I recently bought a 2005 Ford F250 Super Duty, diesel 6.0.
As I was driving to work this morning I noticed that the fuel gauge read almost full when it should have only had a half tank. A little while later I heard a beep and saw that the gauge was now on empty with a "Low Fuel" message displayed. Then I noticed the heater was suddenly blowing cold air.
I've only had the truck for a few weeks, but haven't had any other problems. I did replace the CD receiver and all of the instrument cluster lights a couple weeks ago, but everything seemed to be working fine after.
I have a 2004 F150 XLT 5.4 L 79,000 miles. Yesterday i was driving home turned a corner and the low fuel light came on and the fuel gauge is well below empty. I had approx 1/2 tank of fuel when it happened. I have since filled tank all the way but the gauge will not move and low fuel light stays on. Everything else is working fine! I have never run the truck low enough on fuel to make the dummy light come on.....
View 5 Replies2004 Venture LT ... The newest problem I am having that I haven't resolved is that the fuel gauge is showing empty, low fuel light on, range on trip computer says (E). I repaired the wiring harness's on the left and right front due to ac leakage, and I also repaired the pass through behind the drivers seat. This seemed to resolve many of the problems I was having.
The thing I noticed is that before I repaired the pass through connector the gauge would work intermittently but now its totally dead. I find it unlikely that the sender and the connector would go out at the same time. Any wiring diagram of that connector, or at least which color the wires are for the sending unit and the resistance values I should get?
Its been happening often where it shows empty (when i really have half a tank) and my avg mpg resets itself. As I am driving it will go back to normal.
View 11 RepliesFor the second time in 6 weeks My 2004 F250 Powerstroke has run out of fuel with the gauge showing a 1/4 tank. First time it was just under a 1/4 showing I had it towed to dealer and they told me it had sucked in the filters requiring replace and flush of system. The told me that this happening very often and I would be replacing all of the injectors at my cost. I told them that I didn't want this to happen again and to check out the fuel gauge and sending unit and replace if in doubt. Well they checked it out and found nothing wrong, told me it was accurate and should not be an issue again. Now 6 weeks later on the Friday night before a holiday, it did it again, this time with over a 1/4 tank showing. I really don't want to spend 6 grand replacing injectors and would really like to trust my truck again, getting to the point that I'm nervous at 1/2 tank.
View 9 RepliesMy '03 V10 F250 gas with 135k miles on it went from showing weird fuel levels last week, showing low when I just put $40 in it to now being absolutely below empty, pegged as far south as it can get. I have a CEL light on too but my OBD test shows, "N/A 01-01". So all I can think is that there may be an open/short circuit that the OBD cannot diag.
I replaced my fuel pump about 2 years ago with a replacement AutoZone unit and all had been fine since then. I just do not remember if the fuel level sensor was part of the pump itself or a separate item. If it's a integral part of the pump I should be able to go back to AutoZone and get a warranted replacement.
Is there anything I can test a forehand before either pulling the tank or doing a dump-truck again?
Been driving for 3 days now for a total of about 100 miles from a full tank averaging 50 miles per gallon. I noticed the gauge still shows FULL. Not even a bar below or something. Is there anything wrong with my gauge?

View 3 RepliesMy fuel gauge acted pretty weird today. When I left my house today it was just above half a tank. I was sitting in traffic quite a bit and then looked down and it was below the e. I knew it wasn't empty so I kept going. Got to work. Went for lunch and it said full drove about 5 mins to eat and it went down to half a tank. What's going on? I am thinking of the fuel sender or wiring?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Crew cab F-250 Powerstroke, 156" wheelbase. Need to know about fuel tank capacity? Ford's website and manual are somewhat cryptic. I believe it's 26 gallons.
