My 2009 santa fe (about 30k miles on it). I am hearing an intermittent screeching noise from the front right wheel area when driving at normal speeds. It seems like it might be brake-related because the screech stops when I apply the brakes.
I think worn pads should squeal when braking not driving. What causes a metallic screeching when the brake is not applied?
Finally got my Auto Santa Fe on the road after buying at Auction and changing engine. If you drive reasonably gears change quietly but it you rev over 2k revs before you get to 5th gear there is a screeching noise (like a belt slipping) from the gearbox region of the car. Once in 5th gear or in Neutral there is no screech. Have it booked in with a gearbox specialist next week but have a 300 mile trip on Friday. Is there anything obvious I could have a look at before then?
View 10 RepliesI've got a 2008 santa fe limited 3.3 awd with about 170000 km on it. Lately when I brake I've been hearing a clicking noise coming from what sounds like the driver side front wheel area.
Had it in to my mechanic who checked the brakes and said that pads/calipers/rotors were all fine. They replaced the passenger side front bearing on the lower control arm a few weeks ago and said there is no play or noise coming from any other suspension components.
Where to look next? My mechanic isn't sure what it is so I was going to take it to the dealer and see if they can fix it. Also had new tires installed about a month ago
Our '07 Santa Fe (3.3 L) has began making a terrible noise when turning the steering wheel. It is a deep, whining screeching noise that seems to come from the front passenger side of the car. It isn't a metal-on-metal sound, but is similar to the sound my old skid-steer loader used to make at work when the hydraulics were going out. It also seems to be worse when turning right.
At first I thought it was the power steering pump, but looking at some diagrams online it appears that the pump is to the rear of the motor.
The wife says that the sound seems to get worse after it rains. Saturday she drove into Austin to run some errands and when she got back home the sound was really loud. I drove it into town and after a while the noise went away. She says that the sound has returned, but not as bad as it was this weekend.
Just spent 12 hrs in our new 09 SF Ltd listening to a squeak/tick/click coming from driver's side A pillar area, front door jamb, or side window. I suspect - but am nowhere near sure - it's the windshield moving against gasket or molding. Had a similar issue in the Mazda3 I traded.
View 13 RepliesI just bought a 2006 (mk2) Santa Fe 2.2 CDX manual.Overall I'm pleased with the car but I have noticed over the past week of ownership a whining noise coming from under the floor area towards the front (I think). The noise only occurs around the 20mph mark ( no other speed) and is there whether I'm in gear or just coasting.The car has done 43000 (so not high mileage) has a full service history and only one owner prior to me. It does have a tow bar (which I wanted) just I case this may be relevant.

And then, turning back to straight(to right). then, "Clunk"!
Today I got the clunk when I made U-turn on a street. A month ago, I heard it when I parked with fully turned front tires.
Sometimes when driving I hear a light squeaking sound coming from the front wheel area. When i drive slow, it is a slow squeak, and when I go fast, the squeaking speeds up. I am thinking about spraying some wd-40 or silicone lubricant behind the wheel to lubricate the area to see if it solves my problem. I will be sure not to get any near the brake area but my question is, does spray wd-40 under the chassis or around the control arm area to stop those annoying squeaking sounds?

It stays the same if I am turning the tires. Seems to go away if I put the brakes on hard, but I slow down so much I am not sure. Front CV Joint?
View 1 RepliesAt 37000km we put new tires on and after about 1000km started to hear a high 'woo-woo-woo', from the rear, not really loud but a new noise. Guessing it might be tire noise I checked them for wear and thought the left rear was a bit sharp sliding your hand one direction but smooth sliding across the other way. Went for an alignment....it was only slightly off and the mechanic found the right rear wheel bearing was kaput.
It was done under warranty......but, do these vehicles are subject to premature bearing failure or was this a fluke? I did not see the bearing so I don't know if it was one of two or a pressed-on type or whatever. It would be nice to know that a wheel won't come flying off or seize up when we're halfway to nowhere if a bearing goes bad again.
I have a 2007 Santa Fe 3.3. We bought it used with 24k on it about 5 1/2 years ago. I've uploaded a zipped mp4 of the sound that comes from the area of the AC. The sound was recorded from the passenger seat as it never seems to do it when I'm ready with the hood up.
So far the car has had 4 compressors in 72k miles. The first burnt out the clutch, as did the second a year later. This noise is intermittent, but is getting more frequent and worse. The noise started about a year ago, 3 years after the 3rd compressor install, the compressor was changed out but the noise came back 2 days later so I'm guessing it wasn't that. It only happens when the AC is engaged and doesn't change with the speed of the fan. I'm more concerned as the extended warranty is coming to an end, 75k, and the mechanics really seem stumped.
For those without audio it's a really hard noise to describe. It starts of with almost a low thump and then turns into a resonating metallic screeching. If I turn off the fan or the AC, the noise stops and I can turn them back on a few seconds later and it all sounds normal for a while.
I have a 2010 Santa fe ( since new) 28k miles - I'm getting a grinding noise that seems to come from the front right wheel - noticeable only when doing a right hand turn or going around a roundabout.
So, Is this likely (from my terrible description) to be a wheel bearing problem....
My wife has a 2010 Santa Fe with AWD and 40,000 miles on it, and my daughter has a 2008 AWD with 38,000. I don’t drive my wife’s car much but after taking it on a trip I noticed that the front wheels/tires seemed louder than normal, exactly like a bad wheel bearing or when you are running snow tires. I had the tires balanced and inspected and took the car to the dealer sure that there was a front wheel bearing going out but they said it was fine. A week later I was driving my daughter’s 2008, same noise. Tires on both cars are fairly new and don’t appear to have any problems. So, is this common to these cars and considered normal?
View 2 RepliesWell, even though I love my 2010 SF SE I have had a few issues. I've had my power steering pump replaced twice and now I'm hearing a clunky/creaky noise coming from the right from wheel. I"m thinking it is a sticky caliper. It happens most frequently when I am just starting out from having the car parked for a while. When I put my foot on the brake and then release it I get the noise. It seems to go away after I have been driving a while.
Can't say I ever had this much trouble with my previous generation SF. Nothing major but annoying none the less. BTW I have just under 30k miles.
My parents have a 2007 hyundai santa fe AWD and recently there is this creaking noise from the front end when you have the car in reverse and you're foot on the brake and turn on the wheel, I had someone in the car and I stood outside it sounds like its coming from the center of the wheel near the hub it has that sound like a rusty door hinge, is there a problem with front wheel bearings on these cars we had the two rear ones replaced under warranty because of a humming thrumming noise and now there is a humming thrumming noise again but hard to tell if front or rear and the tires are in good condition no cupping.
Is there an easy way to check the hubs on these cars besides the normal move the tire up and down for play. By the way the car has 105000 kms on it...
Truck has 1800kms on her, pretty much brand new but there is an odd clicking noise on the front drivers side wheel when I adjust the steering from left to right and vice versa. Its quiet if I am going straight, but it sounds like there is a linkage loose. Its not too loud or noisy, but having problems with tierods/knuckle assy?

View 5 RepliesI have recently done some work on my car. I had a clunking noise and needed new rotors, warped. I found out I had a broken coil spring, left front, which I have discovered is fairly common for this car, this was the clunking noise.. About 100k on it. I put on new brake pads, ceramic, and rotors and when I drove the car there was a horrible screeching sound from the left front wheel. Not a sound from the right front. I drove it the first day thinking they would quiet down. They did not.
I took pads off and placed lubricant on the back sides of them, reassembled and drove, no change, still as loud as before. I took all of the brake stuff off and turned the axle and the noise was still there. I changed the wheel bearing thinking that this could be the only thing that would make such a noise. No change with the new wheel bearing! Same noise just as before! I didn't think that this noise could be a half shaft as I thought they mostly made a grinding noise. This is definitely a scraping metal sound, pulses with wheel revolution. I am at a loss as what could be causing this noise.
My '98 Honda CRV with 190k miles has begun to make a curious sort of noise. I noticed a sort of humming noise coming from in front and somewhat to the left of the steering wheel a couple weeks ago, but could never get it to happen while I had the hood up in my driveway. The other day I rolled down the window and drove slowly around my neighborhood to figure out what made the noise happen.
First thing I learned is that it is much louder than I initially thought. And it sounds like a sort of screeching metal on metal sound, with a sort of humming. It always starts when I am moving slowly, such as when starting from a stop at a stop light, or going very slowly around the neighborhood. Turning the steering wheel seems to aggravate it, and make it more likely to start screeching. It will begin while driving straight, however. Once the noise begins, it stays until I come back to a complete stop.
I even tried stopping it by putting it in neutral and using the parking brake, and no difference, so nothing to do with the brakes. The brake rotors were also turned by the previous owner before selling it. My first guess would be a CV joint, because the boot on that wheel is not sealed properly. But my father, in his experience, says bad CV joints could make the steering feel more loose, and when starting and stopping you could feel some slop, neither of which he could detect when driving it. Steering feels tight, there is no play, and I have not been able to detect any other deficiency besides that awful noise.
So, is this a CV joint? A wheel bearing? Is it something else I have not thought of? And, how difficult are these to replace yourself with a good set of tools?
I took my 2009 Santa Fe Limited to my dealer this morning to have them take a look at a click / pop sound that I was occasionally hearing from the front. They inspected everything and did not find any issue and could not replicate. No problem...they did not charge me for the inspection. Great.
So I'm driving home and while making a left turn, all of a sudden my Santa Fe stalls without any warning in the middle of the turn! No audible warning what so ever...just a dead pedal, stiff steering wheel and little braking power. The electrical seemed to be fully working, as my radio and instrument panel was working.
When I had drifted to a stop, I checked my instrument panel and I saw the following indicators:
Immobilizer warning light
Check engine malfunction indicator light
Low oil pressure warning light
Charging system warning light
So I immediately call back my dealership and they ask if I'm able to start the car back up and drive back to the dealership. I start the car back up without issue and drive back.
They bring the car into the bay and hook it up to run diagnostics. The results show no errors??? No codes were thrown??? I have a copy of the report. I don't understand how nothing was captured?
CM series 2009 Santa Fe? 108,000 kilometers. I'm really concerned that this happened without any warning and no digital record or log from the diagnostic. What if I did get into an accident because of this stall and had no way to prove that it was not my fault?.
I own a 2009 Santa Fe Limited AWD with 56,000 miles on it. I purchased it new in July of 2009. I have started to hear a severe clunk in the front end when driving over rough surfaces/potholes. Not when turning the steering wheel. I have read about issues with front stabilizer link bushing. The Santa Fe is at the dealers and they said it is the front control arm bushings. $1000 to repair!
