In cold weather (10-15 deg.) the brakes in my 2009 Santa Fe are very soft/spongy. I had to depress the brake pedal nearly to the floor before it would stop on dry pavement. Once it's warmed up, the brakes seem fine. Pumping them seems to work but they are not back to their normal condition.
View 14 RepliesI drive a 2002 Santa Fe with 121k miles. Last week the red brake light came on in the dash that usually indicates the parking brake is activated, though it was not. Checked fluids, brakes worked fine, so I took it to the dealership to have it looked at.
They claimed "the ABS control module was leaking" and needed to be replaced in it's entirety...almost $2000, and they said that is the reason my brakes felt spongy when applied. I agreed they did. I decided to decline letting them fix it since my brakes had worked fine beforehand.
Upon picking up the car I notice the red indicator light is still on, and now the brakes need to be applied all the way to the floor to have any stopping power at all. It seemed to get worse after 2 days, I checked the brake fluid and it was empty! So I replaced the fluid, yet the brakes still function VERY poorly.
We have a 2009 GLS AWD 3.3l and recently discovered that the parking brake was not fully releasing. We watch our mileage quite closely with the obc and it wasn't seeming quite right. A quick check of the rear parking brake drums showed that they were hot..as in not red hot but too hot to touch. The cure seems to be to work the parking brake pedal up and down fast and many times to 'free up' the mechanisms....this we now do after each time we use that brake. Sadly it is necessary to use it from time to time or like all parking brakes, it would become dysfunctional. Just a tip for those who may wonder why their good mileage suddenly went bad.
View 4 RepliesI just installed new brake pads in my 2WD 2009 Santa Fe. I bought the cheapest AutoZone pads. Now I have a loud squeal sound when I apply the brakes. If I apply a hard brake the squeal goes away. Until I apply the brakes again. Now, after install...I have been researching and noticed that the stock pads are ceramic. I did apply (Not once but twice) break grease on the pads. What the problem might be? Oh yeah, I did see that after 2007, oiling the caliper springs is required and might be the problem too. But I do not know where the spring in question is and how to oil it.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2009 Santa Fe (Automatic 3.3 v6 AWD). I have found the last few days (-20 C) where my gear shift will move into all gears (R, P, N and D) but the car wont move in Drive. R, N and P all work fine. It does seem as the car warms up everything's fine.
The light in the dash for D does not light up either when not working. What this might be?
Our 2009 Santa Fe AWD Limited shifts hard first thing in the morning when my wife shifts into reverse to back out of our parking space. This is a real hard THUD kind of shift, where the car jerks. After that, all shifting is normal. We don't have any other problems with the transmission when driving.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2002 VW Passat wagon. We have had an extremely cold winter here in New England (coldest January since 1898!). Anytime the temperature goes under 10 degrees overnight, my brakes do not work in the morning. When I put my foot on the brake pedal, it does not move and the car will not stop. It takes quite a while before I have full breaking capacity restored. Eventually, it gets back to normal (sometimes takes 45 minutes of driving). In addition, the last time this happened, before I got full braking back, my front brakes locked up and smoked like crazy. When I put my foot on the gas, they disengaged. I've taken the car in for service, left it with the dealer the night before so that it would be there, cold, in the morning, but the problem didn't occur because the temp didn't get cold enough. They couldn't find anything wrong. That's because the brakes work fine when the temp is above 10 degrees. Also, under the same temperature conditions, my automatic transmission will not shift beyond 2nd gear until the car is warmed up.
View 18 RepliesI have a 2000 Nissan Altima that works great except when the weather becomes cold in the winter. The brakes don't work when I turn on my car. The brake lever will not press down at all and once or twice (before I realized this was happening) my car went sliding down the road without an ability to stop. I can't tell if they start working after the car warms up or after I've pumped them for a while because they'll start working again at random times. Sometimes it takes a few seconds and sometimes it takes a few minutes.

I've bled them all numerous times truck running or not flushed power steering pump new fluid. Brakes are spongy or go to floor. Do I need a scanner?
View 2 RepliesI just replaced the front break pads. I didn't replace the rotors or get them machined, didn't look like they needed them. Once I pushed on the brakes (truck off) I noticed that brake fluid spilled out the brake reservoir. I'm guessing it happened when I compressed the piston into the caliper? I took some of the fluid out of the reservoir and now its at MAX (I didn't bleed them). I've only been only be able to stop and go on the driveway (I'm waiting on a new radius arm bracket). The brakes seems spongy, the brake hits the floor. ABS and Brake lights came on then turned off once I started to pump them when I turned the truck 'on'. Do I just need to actually drive and "break" the breaks in?
View 2 RepliesI'm not too familiar with these trucks, but I've been working on my buddies 1999 e350 ford van.
The other day we were going out kayaking, and the brakes locked up, we were able to drive it home, but it was obvious the brakes were holding the truck back. decided to check it out today, found one front and one rear caliper were sticking, the dual piston calipers only had one working, which I believed to be causing the pads to get pressed together crooked, and caused them to "lock up" or get stuck.
anyways, got the new calipers on and no more sticking, so I bled the brakes started in the front and went all the way to the back, did every caliper. brakes feel firm with the vehicle off, but instantly when the van is started, the pedal goes to the floor. it still stops okay, but the pedal feel is not nearly where it should be.
I got all of the air out of the system, but the abs light is on, and has been for a while. I'm wondering if there is something else that needs to be bled in the abs? someone was telling me about bleeding the abs motor?
Having this issue? Should I have it look at? Or is this normal?
View 11 RepliesHad my 09 Tiguan now for 3 months and I'm noticing that during cold weather in the mornings as I try to accelerate or keep a constant speed/rom there is a jerkiness/stutter to the vehicle. It doesn't seem smooth if I go I faster then it's not really felt.
This is felt right around 60km/hr.. Or slower.
Doing some research appears that this could be the fuel injectors - those were just done at the dealer under recall about 7montha ago or so by the PO. The Tiguan has 147k KM on it.
What could be a possible cause for this? I also see that seafoam could clean the carbon build up perhaps?
When it is cold out or wet my serpentine belt squeals a lot or a couple of minutes. It had progressively gotten worse this past winter. The shop said the belt looks fine and Toyota wants me to pay for them to look at it...

I have a 2011 screw, when its cold out, and I start the truck, cold air blows out of the front defroster when the climate control is set to auto.
The fan on my previous ford vehicles would not function till the engine reached operating temp. Then the fan would turn on and blow warm air to the lower vents.
My car usually is park in the garage. I was out of town this weekend and parked outside in 30 degrees weather, then my ML system's HDD won't start up. No GPS, no HDD audio and no voice command? It work again this morning after it sat in the garage overnight. I think this happened before last year also. Can I get the dealer to replace the HDD with my platinum extended warranty?

View 2 Replieshave an 2009 Toyota Corolla 62K miles. If the car sits out 8 hours or more in VERY COLD (zero degrees) weather makes a 1-2 second clashing/sparking noise the split second after turning the ignition on but before engine starts. I tried to attach video/audio. The car starts and runs fine. isn't a ticking or knocking or tapping noise assoc. with bad engine. It isn't squealing noise assoc. w/ serpentine belt. I've been waiting for it to get cold enough to leave overnight at Toyota dealer. I keep wondering if it isn't related to the botched oil changed at the Toyota dealer a couple yrs ago when they forgot the oil & I ran car about 30-60 seconds. At the time, they said all was okay and did compression test (Cyl 1=178psi, #2=175 #3=180 #4=178) all within the normal specs 145-189. I got a 2nd opinion at another Toyota dealer at time who removed valve cover and inspected cam caps and scoped cylinder walls and said all was okay and compression good. No mechanical problems- uses no oil, check engine light not on, etc. What noise is and why just when very cold and car sits out long time?
View 18 RepliesIt's cold here, around 40 below zero F. The 2007 Prius resists turning off - you have to drive around and try a few times. The computer read out screen is blank - no mileage chart or anything. The back up light is not working. The RPMs go high - is it supposed to shift internally when in drive?
