Yesterday I noticed a slight clacking noise coming from the engine, but it was only when I was just barely on the gas. It wasn't there at idle. Now today after an hour drive, it is loud, and at all rpm's. What could it be?
View 18 RepliesI have a 2006 sonata with a 2.4 . It has 120,000 miles on it right now. Around 100k miles , when the engine is under load(hard accelerations), the top end of the engine starts clacking,like the rockers arms are loose. It also does it when in park and you rev it up above 3000 rpm then let off the gas. I have not had time to pull the valve cover yet.
View 1 RepliesMy 2009 Sonata 2.4l Sonata has been making a loud knocking noise when it is cold, but it will fade to almost nothing after it warms up. I tried to make a sound clip of the noise, but it was so distorted that I could not even make out the noise on the video.
For some strange reason the noise matches the skipping problem I have been complaining about since the beginning. Yea it's still there. It sounds like it is in the valve system, not the lower end. It leads me to believe it's coming from the valve clearance/ camshaft area.
I recently bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3 V6. Had another issue related to the rear wheel, which I fixed. Today, I changed the oil filter on the car (along with the oil). I have heard this engine noise before, but with the cover off it appears a little louder. It’s basically a ‘ticking’ sound.
The engine uses no oil, and has no other leaks. It has some noise on startup for maybe 1-2 seconds (like a loud lifter or something, but it goes away in less than 2 seconds, and at the same time the oil light goes out). I changed the filter today because I was told that a leaky gasket could result in the Filter not retaining oil between starts, causes some minor knock for a few seconds.
But anyway, this other ticking noise seems to be regular, regardless of condition. I have heard some people say that some engine noise is normal for this engine, but how about this?

My car is a 2007 Sonata SE V6, first off looking for good suspension kits that will lower my car (just a little), and mainly stiffen my ride up ALOT because it's way too soft. OK to my point, this car sat for awhile maybe 4 or 5 months well my dad gave it to me and once I started driving it I've noticed that the front end on both sides clacks like crazy hitting bumps, it really sounds like when a car bottoms out, I'm not the best with suspension parts, to me it seems like busted shocks, is there a way I can test different parts of my front suspension to diagnose it?
View 3 RepliesMy wife was driving our 2 young kids on the highway and the accelerator was making a loud clacking noise and then there was no response when pressing the accelerator. She managed to get to the shoulder. Mechanic says the engine is totally cooked (long block replacement). Only 32K miles and all scheduled maintenance done.
View 7 RepliesFor the past few months I've been hearing a loud fan-like buzzing noise coming from the passenger side of the front of the car. I don't know that much about cars, but it almost sounds like the engine is racing or something is spinning too fast. It has gotten increasingly worse, and seems especially loud at high speeds on the highway.
It is not the heating/cooling fan - the noise is present when the heating/cooling system is turned off.
My 2006 Mazda 3 (2.3 engine) has been producing some new "ticking/clacking" sounds. They seem to be coming from underneath the car (nope, no critters there), seem to last for only the first 1/4 mile, seem to let up after I apply the brakes a time or two. The also increase in frequency as the car speeds up, making me suspect something wheel-related.
Naturally, when I dropped it off at the garage, the techs could not replicate the sound. As I drove off the premises, it kicked up again, but by the time I went around the freakin' block to show the techs, the sound had stopped! I suspect the car is playing with me. It has 100600 miles on it...
I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that is making a loud clunking noise when I first put the car in gear. I start the car, put my foot on the brake, put the car in R and I hear a creeeeaakkk, clunk! noise coming from the front, passenger side of the car. I back up out of the driveway/parking spot, put the car in D and get a slight clunk! noise out of the same area again.
At first, I thought this was maybe a ball joint or a tie rod failure, but a friend of mine and I took the front wheels off of the car this past weekend and I gotta say, everything was found to be in solid shape. Nothing loose, bushings are in good shape, boots are in fantastic shape, no loose wheels that can be moved in ways they shouldn't move. After getting the noises and clunks to happen again, my buddy's opinion is that it's my transmission having a tough go of it and that I should take it to a transmission shop. Is it a transmission thing?
2006 Sonata, 6 Cylinders, 141,000 miles (227,000 km)
Never did anything with the transmission fluid since I've owned the car. I bought it in 2010 when it had 80,000 miles (129,000 km) on it.
I have a 2009 Hyundai sonata, 2.4, 5 speed manual, gls, when I press down on clutch whether from a stop or when shifting, I get a loud grinding noise and the radio goes dead at same time!, I know it is the starter attempting to "engage", at least that's what I believe it to be, it also "'starts "from, the "on " position when I press on clutch.
View 8 RepliesWhen I was at about 40k miles I started to have this problem. Driving above 35mph the road noise started to get louder. I first thought it was my tires but the noise went away after driving about 1k miles. Now I'm at 72k miles on different set of tires and the noise is even louder. According to a few mechanic shops, they say that there is not enough air flow going into the engine. But I'm not sure if that's the problem. It's not under warranty anymore and I can't just take it to the dealer to find out what's wrong.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2009 Sonata (4 cyl) with 110,000 miles.I have a loud roaring noise coming from my right front end. Jacked car up several times, all seems very tight and wheel spins smoothly. This has been going on for over 5000 miles and I have been waiting for the ailment to show its self more clearly in order to diagnose. sound does not change when turning in either direction or breaking. sound increases with speed and is quite loud at 55mph. Had to replace a tire and put it on the right front to see if it was tire wear and there was no change. sounds like loud road noise.
View 2 Replies2006 Sonata 3.3 V6 with 101,000 miles. At a cold start there is a loud whining noise coming from the engine on the passenger side. After the car warms up the whining goes away. The car has not had any noise before. It is progressively getting worse.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2006 Prius with 215000 miles but the engine developed a clacking noise that could of been bottom end, could of been lifters or could of been a broken timing chain tensioner......anyways I decided to purchase a used pruis engine from a totaled 2006 Prius with 102k miles for $200.
I installed the engine, removing it from the top rather then dropping it from below.
I just got the car back from repairs, there was a loud grinding noise coming from the left side of the engine. It turned out the whole rack and pinion setup was pouring out fluids and needed to be completely replaced also while it was in there they checked out an oil leak which ended up being the front valve cover and replaced a dead O2 sensor. The car has 99,300 miles
View 6 RepliesI have an 03 Camry that has a clicking clacking engine noise when started, is sounds like a lifter or a valve; however after letting it idle for about 20mins, the noise disappears and it runs fine. So far i've done.
1. Flush Engine
2. Change oil and even used a very thick oil 20w 50.

Is it even the engine? Is it a blown head gasket? Is the engine done?
I have a 2008 Honda Accord. When I start the engine I hear a muted clacking sound not a whoosh like air and then it disappears after a few moments. This does not happen after I drive the car to the and park it for less than a 3 hours but if parked longer it occurs again.
View 4 RepliesMy 2005 Hyundai Elantra starts immediately, but you hear a clacking noise coming from the right side of the engine. It stops when the car warms up. It sounds as if some part is slapping or banging against something in the engine. The car starts and runs just fine. There is no hesitation at all while driving or when stopped at traffic light.

View 11 RepliesI purchased a 2011 Sonata about 6 weeks ago. I like almost everything about it, but the engine is very noisy. I'm not talking about a loud growl when you accelerate, but it's almost sounds like there are 2 frequencies sounding at once. It's higher pitched and at times sounds like pinging or clattering. It's very hard to explain. Unfortunately, sometimes it's worse than others and when I've taken it to the dealer, it's not at it's worst. The dealer I purchased it from told me that it was normal, even though I drove another 2011 on their lot that did not have the sound. Another dealer told me that it was a loud fuel pump because of the high pressure of the injectors and that Hyundai is aware and is working on a new "cover" that should muffle the sound. When I contacted Hyundai directly, they did not know of any new "cover" being developed . Assuming I've described it well enough to know... The only thing I know to do is wait for it to get consistently worse, and take it in again.
View 35 RepliesI own a 2004 Hyundai Sonata (2004 Base model L4 - 2.4L 2351cc - MFI GAS DOHC) which is a 4 cylinder and has about 113000 miles. Anyways, about a month ago we had one of our coldest days of the year. I drove the car to work and everything was fine. Then when I left work (it was freezing cold) I went to start the car and it sounded like I started a race car. It was so loud that I thought the car was going to blow up (no check engine light came on). I changed the oil and that didn't work and so I figured it was something with the exhaust.
Then I took it to my mechanic (applause). He said that he was stumped, the car was noisy but he didn't think it was a problem but he said he would try to figure it out. He ended up taking off the timing belt and said that was fine, he said the water pump was good as well. He had a service tech look at it with him and they thought the issue might be the "vibration dampener" or "damper" So they replaced that but it didn't work. He said it could possibly be the motor mounts but he said when he looked at them they looked okay?
I drove it off his lot yesterday and it is quiet when I idle but I can see the steering wheel shaking significantly. Then when I hit the gas it is still obnoxiously loud and with heavy vibration! But when going down a hill and letting off the gas there is a brief respite of silence (still vibration). It is especially louder in lower rpms and sometimes I think I can hear a metallic clanking/scraping noise when I have the times of "silence" but it is very faint.
