I have a 2006 sonata with a 2.4 . It has 120,000 miles on it right now. Around 100k miles , when the engine is under load(hard accelerations), the top end of the engine starts clacking,like the rockers arms are loose. It also does it when in park and you rev it up above 3000 rpm then let off the gas. I have not had time to pull the valve cover yet.

View 18 RepliesMy car is a 2007 Sonata SE V6, first off looking for good suspension kits that will lower my car (just a little), and mainly stiffen my ride up ALOT because it's way too soft. OK to my point, this car sat for awhile maybe 4 or 5 months well my dad gave it to me and once I started driving it I've noticed that the front end on both sides clacks like crazy hitting bumps, it really sounds like when a car bottoms out, I'm not the best with suspension parts, to me it seems like busted shocks, is there a way I can test different parts of my front suspension to diagnose it?

View 8 RepliesI have a '07 Sonata GLS with the 2.4-liter Theta engine and the 4-speed automatic. It has 52k miles on it and has always been serviced regularly. It's been a pretty decent car but is starting to feel a little tired, most notably the worn/bouncy suspension.
Anyway, the other day I was driving down the highway and gave it a little gas to pass a slower car. Doing 60 MPH it downshifted to 3rd (~2000 to ~3300 RPM) and I thought I heard a noise in the engine bay, but I wasn't sure. I ended up needing more power so put it to the floor and as it kicked down to 2nd at ~5000 RPM the rattly noise got a lot more pronounced. Driving around normally I don't hear it but any time I put it to the floor (merging/passing) I will hear the rattle. I can also hear it if I lock it in 2nd gear and give it full throttle up a hill at low speed, like you might do with a stick shift.
It seems like it only does it under load because if I rev it to ~4000 RPM in park in the driveway, there's no noise, even at full throttle. I know the V6s had tensioner issues but I haven't heard much about the 2.4s. I'm not super concerned as it is still under warranty but what might be wrong with it as this is my first Hyundai vehicle, especially in case the dealer can't replicate it.
I have a 2011 Sonata SE 2.4 In the last week Ive noticed a noise what sounds like my valves are rattling or maybe even a bad lifter. This only happens when I bring the RPM's up to 2500-3000. Not at idol or normal driving when RPM's are around 2000 or lower. Its getting progressively louder every couple of days. I've ruled out bad gas (I used another station in another city on last fill up ). My oil is changed every 3000-4000 miles with the recommended oil as well.

I printed this and took to the local dealer & also showed where it was mentioned as a recall.. The advisor looked up on his computer and showed no recalls for the 09 sonata?
I went ahead and scheduled the reprogram update and was told the technician can pull up more info on recalls than the advisor can? Any way they did the reprogram today and $89. later still no recall? How do I prove that in fact this is a recall & get refunded?
I have 2010 Sonata with 4 cylinder engine and 50,000 miles. For a while now, my car has a real hard downshift at around 20mph. When i put the car in shiftronics mode and do not downshift manually, at the 20mph hard downshift the car is shifting from 4th to 3rd. A while back i had the TSB for hard downshift and also did a tranny fluid flush. Neither has seemed to solve the problem.
Also, the car has a annoying electrical hum/whine that is coming from the engine bay. When i shift car into neutral the hum/whine goes away. Also sometimes when shifting into lower gears the hum/whine will go away for a short period of time.
Last Thrusday, my wife couldn't start my Sonata 2010 with 30,350 miles on it. It just clicked and sounded like a dead battery. She had to get a jump start through Hyundai road side service.
I change the battery yesterday (it only had 225 cranking amps) and immediately strange things started happening: lights flickering, engine surging, hard starting, not starting just clicking, gauge lights blink strangely at startup and when switching off ignition, not remembering odometer settings (I set my odo for MPG).
My 2006 Sonata has 63K miles and today started jerking (Hunting) after about 10 miles. Here is what I know. It starts on a level run and disappears when on an incline, but as soon as the crest is reached, and on the downside, it starts hunting again. When it is jerking, around 55 to 60 mph, I switch the transmission lever to Autostick and it stops, back into drive again and it starts again. This is so repeatable there has to be a connection. EVERY time I switch to Autostick the jerking stops, end when I put it back into drive, it starts again. The jerking is severe enough that it is easily detectable. It appears that when the transmission is under load, like going uphill, the jerking stops.
View 6 Replies06 250 5.4 40k on it, usually when cold and accelerating engine will misfire and stutter and then continue accelerating. The wrench light will flash sometimes but it wont store a code. This used to be vague in occurrence but has now started to be more a common occurrence even when up to normal operating temps.It seems only to misfire /stutter on hard acceleration or towing/hauling heavy loads. The only answer I got from a mech would be to do a computer reflash, not sure why /how this would fix whats going on.

I think its the strut mounts because the noise seems to at top of dash behind the fire wall. It sounds like two metal balls knocking together clack clack.: Seems to getting worse as the kms rack up.
View 29 RepliesWe've got a 2012 Hyundai Accent GDI. I've been hearing the rattle "ping" when the engine is under load (accelerating hard or uphill). I've read that this is typical for these engines.
I took it to our local Hyundai dealership since it's still under the 60,000 mile warranty. They updated the computer settings and I put in a fuel additive to clean up deposits. They also told me to buy name brand gas from here on out (Exxon, Shell, Mobil) as these engines don't handle cheap gas well.
Now that I've given you enough of a backstory, here are my questions:
- For those that have experienced the rattle "ping", what did you find fixed the problem?
- Any tips or things to look out for when cleaning the throttle body etc?
My wife has an 06 Mountaineer with a V8 and we have been having a problem with hesitation when the engine is placed under a load. The problem occurs most often when the transmission is in overdrive and the engine goes under a load such as driving up an incline at cruising speed. The engine begins to shudder much like a misfire but disappears when the trans kicks down a gear. The check engine light will flash momentarily but it never sets a hard code that I can read.
I have AutoEnginuity scan tool but there are never any codes. I've driven the vehicle with the scanner hooked up and there is never a misfire noted. The car has 96000 miles with, presumably, the original plugs. I'm aware of the potential problems with attempting to change these plugs. Where to look? I don't want to "hang parts" such as mass air flow or throttle position sensor. I've been hoping that the problem would progress to the point that a hard code would be set but none has yet.
Today I drove my 2006 G2 Prius with 59,000 miles to the park and had the windows down. I climbed a hill for a good while that had the engine under load and there was a concrete wall beside me, and I could hear a very very faint metallic-like rattle. I mentioned it to my partner who listened and said he couldn't even hear it, so maybe it is just me.
View 2 RepliesMy 2006 Mazda 3 (2.3 engine) has been producing some new "ticking/clacking" sounds. They seem to be coming from underneath the car (nope, no critters there), seem to last for only the first 1/4 mile, seem to let up after I apply the brakes a time or two. The also increase in frequency as the car speeds up, making me suspect something wheel-related.
Naturally, when I dropped it off at the garage, the techs could not replicate the sound. As I drove off the premises, it kicked up again, but by the time I went around the freakin' block to show the techs, the sound had stopped! I suspect the car is playing with me. It has 100600 miles on it...
So today I noticed a weird noise coming from the back from the car when i stop like a *clack clack clack* it doesn't always make the noise so i cant replicate it, what is it? I am taking it to the dealer next week but an insight will be good....
View 7 RepliesI have a 2010 Sonata GLS 4-cylinder approximately 124K miles which has been hesitating on hard accelerations for about 8 months. It will usually do this when getting on an on-ramp for the freeway or if I need to do a U-turn and get up to speed quickly. What happens is I punch the gas and the vehicle acts as if it's not getting any gas and hesitates or stalls and then it finally takes off. Usually I see a cloud of grey/white smoke behind the car enough that I am unable to see any cars in my rear view mirror.
I do not seem to see a difference when the vehicle is warm/cold. I do not have a CEL nor have had one. I have replaced the MAP sensor, PCV valve and spark plugs (properly gapped). I have done a compression test and am getting roughly 180-185 psi per cylinder. I am not experiencing any oil loss/coolant loss, do not see any oil in the coolant or gummed-up or oily spark plugs. I have also replaced the transmission fluid, doing a drain and flushing the torque converter. I have also cleaned the throttle body, and am using a new air filter and the oil has been changed within the past 1000 miles.
My 2010, 4 cyl. auto started giving me hard downshifts awhile ago, when cold. Mainly going from 4 to 3, and 3 to 2. I had the tranny fluid changed a few months ago at 56,000 miles, but no difference. So, that left me with the dealer and this is their diagnosis:
Updated ECM and TCM and hard shift still present. Vehicle will require new PCM (TCM?) to resolve problem.
Recently my wifes 2009 Sonata limited has started having a hard "clunk" when braking. It feels like a hard shift from 3rd to 2nd (or 1st?) during deceleration. Only really occurs when moderately cold and only during the first 10 miles or so of travel. What I should check?
