This started today, when I turn off the ignition and remove the key the radio stays on and the steering column does not lock. The guy at the dealership suggested spraying wd 40 into the ignition. No go.
2008 sonata.
My 2003 santa fe steering column won't lock when the key is removed. What might cause this to happen, or not happen I guess? I would like to have the lock working.
View 1 RepliesI guess not ALL of the time, but pretty often when I turn off my truck and remove the key from the ignition, I get the "key is in the ignition" chime, and I'm not allowed to lock my truck.
View 2 RepliesI did a search on all three of these and did not find anything.
1) Odd noise coming from steering column while turning.
2) Vanity mirror on driver's side, the lid/flap thingy does not stay open.
3) Trunk only opens when using key. Using FOB of door button does not work. You can hear movement but it does not open.
My car was having the problem with key not turning and was getting worse over time. Finally decided to replace it, but didn't want two sets of keys or to replace all locks in the car or pay dealer $550 to do it for me.
I bought the new $135 lock from the dealer and swapped the tumblers out from the old unit. Here is my document on how to do it. [URL] .....
I drove from office to home today. After 30 min, the remote unlock worked fine, got into the car, turned the ignition to "A" and "ON". All the dashboard lights, headlights and radio turned on. When I turned the key to "START" , car won't start and all the lights and radio turned off. There was no cranking and any other noise from engine. Removed the key and tried again. Now there is no power at all. Not sure what happened.
View 2 RepliesLately when i take my key out of the ignition, my radio stays on and my car will chime with the door open as if the key was still in the ignition (and it lasts for different periods of time). I also have found it more difficult to get the key in and out. Obviously there is something wrong with the ignition.

Also, when I opened the door, the door chime came on as if the lights were still on and now I'm not able to lock the car or set the alarm using my key. I've read that some vw cars are wired so that the radio stays on after the car is turned off, but this has never been the case with my car. My main concern is battery drainage and being unable to lock and arm my alarm.
View 2 RepliesI own a 2013 Elantra GT that my wife drives. We have had it since late September 2012, so it is about 20 months old now, with only 2250 miles. Yes, I know, it is not even broken in yet.
Anyway, yesterday when the wife returned from some shopping she told me that the radio in the car is still on after the engine was off, the ignition locked and the key in your hand.
I checked it out, and sure enough, the radio was still on. I restarted the car, and discovered the power button would not turn the radio off, the radio volume could not be changed, and the station could not be changed. Every control for the Audio system was inoperative, along with all the control buttons on the left side of the steering wheel.
Every thing else in the car appeared to work. When I shut the engine off, and removed the key, the radio still played on. I took the car over to the dealership first thing this morning; the service rep, the service manager and a service tech could not figure it out. I had to leave the car with them, so that one of their Electronic Certified Techs who comes in later could check it out.
They drove the car to a service bay, and disconnected the battery, so the radio would not run the battery down. When the tech came in, he reconnected the battery, and everything now works. They have no idea at all what happened.
My 1999 GMC Sonoma has a occaisonal problem--the tail lights stay lit after the light switch and the ignition are turned off. The brake pedal does not appear to be sticking. The cure has been to remove both light bulbs, wait a few minutes, plug them back in, and all is well. This might happen an average of once a month, seems more common in hot weather.
View 1 RepliesOk, so I'm working on a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, 93,000 miles. The vehicle runs great! So great that you cant get it to stop running!! The problem is intermittent and generally happens after the vehicle has been running for at least 3 minutes. I turn the key off and she keeps on running (not dieseling, but running at 340-450 rpms!) I have already removed the aftermarket remote start that was installed on the vehicle thinking that was the problem, it was not. Then I went to the ignition switch and unplugged that, also to no avail! I plugged my scan tool in and can communicate with the computer and view pids while the key is on. When I turn the key off, I should loose communication. When everything acting normal and the car actually shuts off with the key, I loose communication with the computer upon turning the key off. When I turn the key off and the veh. keeps running, I do NOT loose communication with the pcm. The only way to shut the car off is to step on the gas pedal. Otherwise it'll run at 400 or so RPM for an hour or so!!

View 14 RepliesSo as some have seen I have been having some startup problems with my Passat (06 2.0T, 40k miles). Took it to the Indy shop near me and he said it was a problem with the steering column lock/Interpol system and he did not have the software to do anything more to it, so I will probably be taking it to vw tomorrow. What does the Interpol system do, etc. literally any info. Also I assume this is an electrical system? Any chance it's covered under extended warranty? Calling vw today to see what they say about it as then probably going to drop it off tonight.
View 3 RepliesI am driving to work as i do almost everyday but somethin weird happened when i got there... usually i turn my car off when I go into work as everyone does but i guess my car decided it still wanted to run today. I took my key out of the ignition but my car kept running. Luckily I filled up yesterday. I tried pushing the key in and taking it back out a couple times but it just stayed on. With my key out an the car running my MFD would say the steering column lock message but the steering wasn't locked an with the key in the message went away and steering was still free.
So I called my flight to let him know whats going on, since I was already in the parking lot he and a few others come to look and laugh and blame it on the fact its german or blame it on the features they want but dont have. [IMG] [URL] ..... but i the end it had something to do with the remote wire going to my amp?? I am not sure how but my flight chief thought to unplug it and my car just shut off. I am still wondering how a remote wire to my amp could keep my car running without the key. I've had the stereo system in over a year and its never done this..
I was sitting in a parking lot waiting for someone for about 2 mins when I went to drive away I turned the steering wheel and the car stalled. This never happened to me before it has not happened again yet. I did also have the A/C on if this makes a difference. I figure the ac clutch engaged at that same time or some fluke thing happened.
View 4 RepliesI recently took my Passat to the dealer because I got a message on the MFD saying that the steering column lock was defective. The car is still under warranty so I wasn't worry about the cost but I was expecting the dealer to have to change the entire steering column since I had read that the column lock is integral to the steering column.
When I picked up the car they told me that they only had to change the column lock. It appears that they have found a way to change the column lock only rather than the entire steering column. However what really through me for a loop was that they asked me for my second key and told me that they had to reprogram it.
Now I am wondering how the whole immobilizer, ECU, steering column lock and keys work when it comes to the programming. I want to understand this in the event that it happens again after the warranty expires so I can repair it myself. How the SKC code works and how to go about it if I need to swap the immobilizer or column lock module again in the future or even adapt a new key?
I have a V8 w/o navigation. I am able to adjust the volume of the radio from the steering column but would like to know whther I can change stations from the steering column as well. None of the controls seem to allow it.
View 5 RepliesI'm having a serious problem with my 2-year old 09 Sonata....
It happened for the third time: after driving for a couple minutes, numerous dashboard signals flared up and my power steering suddenly seemed to turn off - all in the middle of driving. The first two times I took the car in, they found problems. One of the malfunctioning components was the timing belt, and they replaced it for us. After the third time, however, they couldn't find any problems and my car was deemed "perfectly normal." They didn't do anything for us.
Now, I'm left with a 'normal car' that I know will show the same problem sooner or later.. maybe in a more dangerous situation than the previous 3.
I am working on a salvage car that I bought recently. It was stolen, they cut the wire harness to the GPS system and messed up the steering column. I replaced the steering column with a 2012 GTI steering column and steering wheel. I bought a RNS 315 but I dont have any luck finding a wiring connector for it. After I installed the steering column, when I turn the ignition key nothing comes on in the gauge cluster. I know the car wont start till the key is programmed. My question is do I need to fix the wire harness so that when I turn the key ON the cluster will light up? Where I can find the connector for RNS 315. Regarding the airbag, will a GTI airbag work on a Golf TDI?
View 1 RepliesTo make things short.. took the car in last month for the recalls and now the steering column lock just came up with the steering light flashing. Never happened.. ever until I did the dam recall. Taking it back to the the dealer to see what it is. Maybe a loss connection.
View 2 RepliesWhat a great way to start the day! Nice little message on my MFD when I started the car up this morning. It drove to work just fine (which is right by the VW dealership) - but when I turned it off and started it again, the light was gone... Don't want to take any chances so I'll definitely bring it in. On a side note - I'm now hearing a clicking sound at speeds above 40mph. The noise gets faster as the car speeds up.
